RECALLCampaign #24V896000

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Ram 2500 Pickup, Ram 3500 Pickup, 3500 Cab Chassis, 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles. The hydraulic control unit (HCU) may fail, which can cause the anti-lock brake (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and traction control systems to fail.

Fix: Dealers will replace the brake HCU, or replace the HCU motor, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed January 9, 2025. Some owner notification letters were mailed January 9, 2025. The remaining owner notification letters will be mailed at a future date, anticipated July 2026. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is C4B.

While driving at 40 mph, your ABS and ESC warning lights came on and your brakes stopped working—you had to lower your snowplow to stop the vehicle. Your dealer is aware of a recall (Campaign 24V896000) for this exact brake system issue, but the replacement parts aren't available yet, so they can only offer a temporary fix for now. The repair will likely involve replacing hydraulic brake system components once parts become available.

Your brakes failed to stop your truck on two separate occasions, causing crashes with deer. You pressed the brake pedal, but the vehicle didn't respond, and your ABS and traction control warning lights came on. A mechanic diagnosed a failed HCU (hydraulic control unit) module that needs replacement, but the part has been on back order for two years and isn't available.

Your truck displays a "Check Brake System" warning and traction control light while driving at highway speeds (50-75 MPH), causing cruise control to shut off unexpectedly and creating a dangerous situation where you were nearly rear-ended. The dealer identified this as a known safety recall issue, but the repair parts aren't available yet and the manufacturer hasn't provided assistance despite the extended wait time.

Your truck's anti-lock brake system has a known defect that causes the alarm to sound and warning light to flash at unpredictable times, which can be dangerous in winter driving conditions. You had repairs done over two years ago, but the replacement part was the old defective version. You're still waiting for the improved part that Chrysler has developed for 2017 and 2018 Ram pickups. This will likely require replacement of the anti-lock brake control module with the updated version.

Your 2017 Ram 3500 is subject to a manufacturer recall (NHTSA Campaign 24V896000) for a hydraulic brake system issue. You've noticed an intermittent ABS warning light starting in 2024 and an abnormally loud whirring sound in October 2025 when trying to use 4WD, along with a "Service 4WD" message and the vehicle refusing to shift into 4WD. The dealer has told you the recall repair part isn't available yet, causing a significant delay. The fix will require the dealer to replace the affected hydraulic brake or 4WD system component once the part becomes available.

My ABS hydraulic control unit pump motor is not working properly. This has been affecting me since Oct 2024 when we were pulling our 5th wheel and losing braking and power. I learned later that It is part of a NHTSA Recall 24V-896000. Code C4B I was told by the Dodge dealer Jack Powell in [XXX] that I was on waitlist when I reported it to them 12/19/2024. During the next several months I always got the same answer so then filed a case on 7/7/2025 with the FCA. Case #XXX. During many calls after, and including the last call on 3/27/26 that the part was not available, that this was a National backorder with no ETA. I filed another case on 8/17/25 for a rental vehicle - case #XXX. After several calls I got that approved. The Dodge dealer diagnosed my truck with that active code in place. Also to be clear, the dealer has confirmed failure of the ABS system, which disables safety features Due to this defect, the truck can lose ABS braking, tractional control and electronic stability control. The dash warning lights come on all the time, with the sound too. Although I was approved for a rental vehicle, that is for $60 per day and only for a non-tow vehicle. The problem is that this vehicle is primarily used for towing. I have a 5th wheel hitch and use it for towing our 5th wheel trailer, that we purchase early 2024. We tow our boat as well. The bigger problem is that I am near retirement and we are not able to use our 5th wheel for the trips to prepare for that and the plan to travel once I retire later this year. I need to have a functionally comparable vehicle that is equipped for 5th wheel towing as a rental or reimbursement. I would also like a review for alternative remedies due to the unreasonable delay in completing the safety recall. When I contacted Stellantis on 3/27/26 I was told her was no buyback option and they would escalate to the rental dept for my concerns The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. FCA issued recall C4B notification at the end of 2024, with estimated parts availability in the 2nd quarter of 2025. I am filing this complaint regarding the unavailability of a critical safety component for my vehicle. Multiple dealers have informed me that the part is not available through the Mopar parts chain. However, the identical part is currently available for purchase by consumers through MoparGenuineParts.com (111 Bond Street, Westbury, NY 11590) at the following link: [XXX] ). One verified buyer even confirmed this discrepancy. As [XXX] wrote in his 5-star review dated 04/03/25: *"ABS PART – Fixed my problem just what I needed. Dealership said they could not get to because of part shortage??"* This highlights a troubling inconsistency: Mopar’s authorized dealer network is unable to supply parts that consumers can easily purchase online. It makes no sense that the official supply chain is cut off while direct-to-consumer sales remain active. The component in question is critical to the safe operation of the vehicle. If it fails at high speed, the driver could experience sudden loss of braking or steering control. Such a failure poses an imminent danger of severe accidents, rollovers, or fatalities, both to the vehicle occupants and to others on the roadway. My concern is twofold: (1) why Mopar dealers cannot access parts that clearly exist in Mopar’s system, and (2) how long-term safety is being compromised if consumers must resort to inconsistent third-party availability for essential components. This disconnect directly threatens public safety. I respectfully request NHTSA investigate why Mopar’s dealer network is unable to provide critical safety components, while consumers can obtain the exact same part online, and whether this practice constitutes a systemic safety hazard that warrants recall, investigation, or enforcement action. I am filing this complaint regarding an unresolved safety recall for the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) on my 2017 Dodge Ram 3500, VIN ending in [XXX] , under Recall Number C4B/NHTSA 24V-896. We received the recall notification months ago and have been waiting ever since for further instructions or a remedy from FCA US LLC. After more than six months, we still have no resolution. Recently, the vehicle was towed to Patterson Dodge in Tyler, TX, where it was inspected by the dealership. They confirmed that there is currently no remedy available for the HCU issue and stated they have no idea when a fix will be provided. This is not just a matter of inconvenience — this is a critical safety concern. FCA's own recall notice clearly states: “The loss of ABS/ESC/Traction control may cause a vehicle crash without prior warning.” We purchased this truck specifically to tow our 5th wheel camper, which we now cannot safely operate due to the safety risk posed by this unresolved recall. Without proper braking and stability control systems, towing a heavy load would be incredibly dangerous, not only to us but to everyone else on the road. We understand that vehicle recalls can take time to resolve. However, it is extremely concerning that: FCA has offered no timeline or remedy after many months. The vehicle remains inoperable for its intended purpose due to the unresolved recall. We were never proactively contacted with updates and had to follow up on our own. The dealership confirmed the part is not only unavailable but with no estimated time of arrival. We respectfully request that NHTSA investigate whether FCA is meeting its obligations under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act to provide a timely and effective recall remedy. A known safety defect has been identified, but the remedy is indefinitely delayed, and the manufacturer is not offering alternative solutions (loaner vehicle, buyback, etc.) while we are left with a vehicle we cannot safely use. [XXX] I got a check engine light and associated ABS and traction control light. Roads were dry and braking seemed fine. Lights eventually went out. Service department at dealership said sometimes moisture will cause this. No codes. Between May and October this problem has become repetitive and has been in the dealership service department multiple times. Codes show only when lights are on. Wheel speed sensor has been replaced (twice), but did not solve problem. Other features affected when these lights are on: 4WD will not engage, cruise control inop, rear collision sensor inoperative. My truck has been in the shop (dealership at Lithia in Anchorage, AK) since 10 Oct. Technician has said it needs ABS module and hydraulic pump, but FCA (or Stellantis who issued service contract) will not release parts (or they are out of parts and won’t admit). Apparently Ram engineers don’t believe service tech and are having him chase an electrical problem and now hub replacement. A quick internet search and it appears thousands of Ram owners (17-18) have dealt with this problem. The mileage is just shy of 110,000 and service contract expires at 125k or Jun 25. As a consumer I’m stuck between Ram engineers, and service department at dealership (currently without vehicle). A heavy duty pickup in Alaska is useless w/o 4WD on the rapidly approaching winter. This is obviously a known problem and needs resolution.

Beginning in 2018, the ABS system will stop working intermittently and a number of trouble lights will come on, such as "Service ABS system" and, at the same time the cruise control and 4 wheel drive will stop working. I took it to a dealer while still under warranty and they claimed the ABS system was fine, and they could find no problem with the ABS, which had to be a lie since a code would certainly have shown up. I will go months without a problem then it will start intermittently going out for weeks at a time. This happened once in a snow storm near Denver, CO and I nearly went into the ditch because the 4wd suddenly stopped working. My research shows this is a common and serious problem with the 2017 and 2018 Rams and the manufacturer is well aware of the defective HCU that causes this safety issue. It needs to be repaired in a recall. An OBT scan shows that the ABS control unit intermittently suffers a "complete electrical failure" in the hydraulic control unit of the ABS.

The Third time was on 12/14/2020, 14,930 miles. The dealer waved the deductible charges, this time, since the truck was just out of the regular warranty and this was an ongoing problem. The Fourth time was on 1/19/2024, 21,348 miles. Again, having to use extended warranty and pay the deductible. It's currently in the shop being repaired for the Fifth time for the same problem, 5/6/2024, 22,780 miles, Not even 4 months and less than 1,500 miles since the previous repair. The Dealer also said that the Brake Pedal sensor is bad this time in addition to all of the ABS parts. Once again, having to use extended warranty and pay the deductible. I purchased a 2017 RAM 3500 in 2018 brand new, directly from a dealer. Within the first week of ownership, truck started alerting me that there is an issue with the automatic brakes and to service the vehicle. I took the truck to my local dealer in October 2018. They confirmed issue was with the ABS system. I was told to take a rental car because it would take some time to get the parts and I wouldn’t be allowed to take my truck because it wouldn’t be safe to drive. The parts came in after some time and the truck was repaired. Almost 24 months later (September 2020), the same ABS alerts began presenting itself. The dealer confirmed that the issue was again the ABS system and I was provided with a rental car until the part was replaced. Again, 24 months later (October 2022), the ABS alerts began to persistently display and make a chime many times over and over while driving. The dealer once again confirmed the ABS was at fault and ordered parts. I was told there were no parts available and to expect several months before the truck could be serviced. This time, the dealer would not provide a rental because the truck was not considered under warranty. Six months passed (March 2023) and the dealer called to report that a part had arrived and to bring the truck for service. The dealer later called and said when the box was opened, the part appeared damaged and could not be used and to wait for another part. I waited another 5 months (August 2023) to call the dealer and ask if any parts would be coming soon. I was told that engineers at RAM recalled all the parts and none are available. I went to the dealer and received a refund for the prepaid part. My truck has had no working ABS system since October 2022. The ABS is always on 100% of the time. This is a safety issue which devalues my vehicle, if I were to try to sell it. It also poses a danger whenever I need to use it. If parts do ever become available, I do not feel I should have to pay $1,000 for the repair.

I am the second owner of this vehicle. Shortly after purchase (mileage 26,401) the Hydraulic Control Unit (Control for Anti-lock braking system) failed. Dodge dealer installed OEM replacement in March 2022. The same component (Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU)) failed again July 2023. Dodge dealer scheduled service/replacement for August 3, 2023. Upon delivery of vehicle for service I am told Chrysler has blocked dealers from ordering any HCU nor are they to use any current inventory on hand. Chrysler has initiated an "engineering investigation" into these parts and is seeking another manufacturer to supply going forward. Chrysler estimates a part may become available by February 2024. Vehicle is used for towing and has no anti-lock braking system in the mean time. I believe this could pose a safety issue.

My ABS control module was replaced 2 years ago by David Stanley Dodge in midwest city oklahoma. It is failing again and i have discovered a lot 2017 & 2018 ram 2500/3500 trucks are having the same issue. Last time it cost $800 to fix. I now have to take it back in again to have it fixed again. This is unacceptable. Ram should be recalling this issue on these trucks.

My vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police or insurance reps. The problem was initially hidden by the dealership that sold me the truck. The truck only had 50k miles. Again the constant dinging is driving me insane. Dealer says there’s no way to turn the ding off and I just have to deal with it. I shouldn’t just have to deal with it. For the second time we are getting the intermittent "Service Electronic Braking System" warning on our 2017 Ram 3500HD. The first on 4/21/2020 @ 15293 miles resulted in replacement of the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit and Controller Module under warranty. Now the same issue is occurring again @ 26500 miles and of course out of warranty . When this happens both the Anti Lock Brakes and Stability Traction Control functions are not operative per the warning lamps. This can be a significant safety concern. Twice in 10,000 miles should trigger a concern and maybe a redesign-recall..

My Ram 3500 DRW has about 45000 miles and it now requires the replacement of the hydraulic control unit (HCU) and the anti-lock braking system (ABS) module. I discovered this issue prior to the warning light flashing and sounding when I had to do sudden braking in order to avoid an obstacle in the road encountered during a storm last week. I just barely got my Ram to stop and not swerve off into the ditch as the pumping of the brakes did not stop the truck. The truck just slid as if it did not have ABS capability. I was told by the Ram dealership in Spartanburg SC that these two repair parts are not available due to increased demand due to what the technician said was a "known issue" for the last couple of years. You cannot even order these parts today as the Ram parts system doesn't even allow you to add the parts to your shopping cart. To add insult to injury, the service manager told me that these two repair parts needed to repair my truck will not be available until August 2023! This is my work truck and I do not have another vehicle to use as I wait for these parts to be available. I can continue to drive the truck but will do so at my and my family's risk all the while with the ABS warning message flashing and warning chime sound constantly dinging. Not to mention not having emergency braking capability when it is needed the most.

On December 14th, I was driving my 2017 Ram 3500 with 95,000 miles down the road when I encountered a tree completely blocking the roadway. When I applied the brakes I heard a pop and the brake pedal went the the floor. At this point I had no brakes and was forced to hit the tree. Thankfully it was in a rural area and no one was killed because of the failure. My safety was defiantly put at risk because of this failure. Once stopped I was able to look under the hood and found the top bolt that holds the brake master cylinder to the firewall sheared completely off. This caused the brake master cylinder to fall away from the firewall and disabled all braking functions. I had the vehicle towed to a Ram Dealer and then contacted Ram (Stellantis) for a reason and solution to fix the failure. They sent an engineering analysis associate to look at the the truck finally on the January 9th. They then sent a very generic letter on the 12th stating that they don't believe it is a manufacturing issue. They will give the dealer or myself no further information on what they found, what the cause was, or how the dealer should proceed to fix the problem. The vehicle is still currently sitting at the Ram Dealer and has not been fixed if you would like to inspect it. There were no warning lights, messages, or prior problems associated with this failure. It was a sudden and catastrophic failure of the braking system.

THAT WAS WHY IT TOOK OVER 2000 MILES TO COMPLETELY WEAR DOWN PARKING BRAKES TO THE POINT AT THE FINAL PULL/ENGAGEMENT, IT LOCKED UP. SINCE THE VEHICLE IS STILL BRAND NEW AND UNDER MANUFACTURER WARRANTY, I HAD ASKED DEALER TO INVESTIGATE AND DEALER WOULD NOT. I HAD ALSO ASKED FCA TO SEND ENGINEER TO INVESTIGATE THE INCIDENT AND WAS TOLD ?NO?. THEIR REASON WAS IT WAS MY FAULT WHICH IS EASIER FOR THEM TO DO THAN ACCEPT THE RESPONSIBILITY. I ALSO ASKED MY EXTENDED WARRANTY POLICY PEOPLE (WHICH I HAD PURCHASED) BUT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY FOLKS SAID, THE VEHICLE WAS BRAND NEW SO IT WOULD BE COVER UNDER THE MANUFACTURER WARRANTY WHICH THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WOULD NOT COVER UNTIL THE MANUFACTURER WARRANTY PERIOD HAD EXPIRED. I HAVE A RAM 3500 SINGLE REAR WHEEL TRUCK WITH INTEGRATED BRAKE CONTROLLER. IT WAS HOOKED UP TO MY 10,000# GVW 5TH WHEEL TRAILER THIS PAST WEEKEND AND NO MATTER HOW I SET THE CONTROLLER, FOR EITHER BRAKING STRENGTH OR TRAILER SELECTION TYPE, IT PROVIDES IMPERCEPTIBLE BRAKING TO THE TRAILER. IT NEARLY PUSHED ME RIGHT THROUGH AN INTERSECTION AT 25 MPH BECAUSE THERE WAS NO BRAKING. THIS OCCURRED ON A 35 MPH LEVEL GRADE AND I WAS SLOWED AT THE TIME FOR AN APPROACHING RED LIGHT. TRUCK IS RATED TO TOW MUCH MORE. I DISCONNECTED FACTORY UNIT AND PUT IN AN AFTERMARKET AND IT WORKED EXACTLY AS IT SHOULD, WHICH SHOULD RULE OUT BOTH THE TRAILER AND TRUCK WIRING AS IT USES THE SAME WITH JUST AN PLUG SWITCHED FROM INTERNAL BRAKE CONTROLLER TO AFTERMARKET.. I HAVE SEEN MANY POSTINGS ABOUT THIS ON THE INTERNET AND IT SEEMS FCA HAS A STAR CASE ON THIS AS WELL #S1508000014. I FEEL THIS CAN PUT ANY DRIVER IN A VERY BAD OR DEADLY SITUATION VERY QUICKLY.
