highENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL
Filed: Jan 2026

While driving at 50 mph, you noticed blue and white smoke coming from under the hood. After pulling over, the smoke continued and the engine wouldn't start when you tried to restart it. A mechanic diagnosed a faulty high-pressure fuel pump as the cause. The repair would involve replacing the high-pressure fuel pump, which is a significant job on a diesel engine.

Your truck is losing power when you accelerate and the engine exhaust brake isn't working as expected. You're also seeing diagnostic codes P003A and P006F, which appear to be related to the turbo actuator. The fix will likely involve inspecting and possibly replacing the turbo actuator or related components.

Your engine is leaking coolant (antifreeze) from the back of the motor. This can cause your engine to overheat if the coolant level drops too low. You should have the leak inspected and repaired to prevent engine damage.

On June 26, 2024 during a long road trip, the vehicle lost power repeatedly in the middle of an area with no road service. It put my safety and that of my passenger at risk on the highway as losing power suddenly causes danger in fast-moving traffic causing the risk of potential collisions with other vehicles. There was no warning lamp indicating the failure would occur. To this date, the dealer has not fixed the issue. After approximately three weeks, I picked up the vehicle after it as allegedly repaired (at that time the dealer stated it was an electrical issue). The vehicle failed again not more than one-half mile from the Omak Dodge service center placing my safety at risk yet again. I managed to get the vehicle back to the service center at which time, the dealer stated after consultation with RAM technical support, that the issue was a failure in the fuel system. The dealer claims that the problem was the failure of a fuel injector/pump that caused particulate matter to contaminate the entire fuel system. Being that it was allegedly a power train failure, it was to have been covered under the power train warranty. After approximately three months of delay, the dealer stated the truck was repaired. On arriving at the dealer to pick up the truck, the dealer stated it wasn't repaired and had an exhaust issue. The truck remains at the dealer to this date, October 25, 2024. The dealer states that the exhaust issue is yet another issue with the truck that is covered under a warranty voluntarily extended to 10 years by RAM.

Initially I witnessed a large volume of smoke coming from the exhaust pipe when pulling up to fuel pump. A passer-by informed me that there were flames underneath the truck on the passenger side. I then got out of truck, stooped down to look underneath, and observed a hose leading from the exhaust system on fire and multiple exhaust components glowing red hot. After getting my passenger out of the truck I got back in, put it in drive and pulled forward away from the fuel pumps and made it about forty feet before truck engine stalled. I then proceeded to get a fire extinguisher from the fuel pump lanes and extinguish the fire and directed the remaining agent at the hotspots to cool them. After the fire department ensured the vehicle was safe to move it was towed to the local RAM dealership where it is now awaiting service technicians to inspect the damage after the weekend.

My truck began idling hard and stalling out. I've contacted the local dealership multiple times to have the recall fixed for the CP4 fuel pump replaced and software updated and keep getting told they don't have the parts. I'm now having to schedule to have the truck looked at out of my pocket.

I’ve been waiting for a recall fix for the Y78 on my Ram Cummins. My dealer keeps saying they only get in a couple of the high pressure fuel pumps every few weeks. I’ve started the process back in December with no estimated wait time other than it will be many months before they fix it. I know many people who have but a direct replacement pump that will remedy the problem and have been reimbursed for parts and labor. My really helpful dealer this morning told me to contact NHTSA and file a complaint about how to go about the reimbursement process to get it fixed myself or provide me other options to get it fixed. Any help would be appreciated.

I have been having issues starting my truck when I took it in they said it was an ecu reflags needed. I believe it is an open recall y78 for over a year and they do not have the part. But my truck all of a sudden loss power on the freeway doing 65 my wife and daughter started crying I barely made it to the edge of the freeway with being hit within inches of a semi truck. We sat on the side of the freeway with trucks passing us shaking our truck from the wind. Finally I had to call Chp to have cars slow down when it became night time I fears for the safety of my wife and daughter. Yes the issue now is it won’t start at all but they are telling me go somewhere else it could take 2-3 months to fix the issue. No one inspected it yet just that it wouldn’t start. It was continuously having power surges but too light. Then all of a sudden loss power and it says service exhaust system see dealer.

Issue with high pressure fuel pump and loss of turbo boost. At first Mopar/ Dodge refused to replace the fuel pump regardless of the recall. After hours on the phone they finally agreed to replace fuel pump but said no idea why turbo isn’t working correctly.

Engine started to slip or misfire. Became worse and then light came on saying Exhaust Emission Service was needed. The truck lost power as it limped to the side of the road. The Service Electronic Ignition light then came on and truck turned off. Would not crank again.

The contact owns a 2019 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 MPH, the engine started to knock. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who diagnosed that the fuel injector pump had blown out and caused other damage to the engine. The engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was aware of the issue and opened a case. The approximate failure mileage was 48,000.

TRUCK HAS CP4 FUEL INJECTOR PUMP. PUMP CAN FAIL WITHOUT WARNING. WHEN IT FAILS THE PUMP DISTROYS THE FUEL RAIL SYSTEM. TRUCK CAN THEN LEAVE THE OCCUPANTS IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION. WHEN PUMP SHUTS DOWN THE ENGINE YOU LOOSE STEERING AND BRAKES. YOU ALSO LOOSE THE EXHAUST BRAKE FEATURE. HAS NOT HAPPENED ON MY TRUCK. THESE PUMPS WILL FAIL AT SOME POINT.

THIS SAFETY RECALL OCCURRED IN JANUARY 2020 AND I RECEIVED NOTICE FROM DODGE RAM (CHRYSLER). I HAVE CALLED DEALERS IN ST GEORGE AND LAS VEGAS WHO HAVE TOLD ME THE SAME: THEY ONLY GET A FEW PARTS PER WEEK OR TWO TO FIX THE PROBLEM AND PLACED ME ON THE DEALERS "WAITING LIST." I HAVE BEEN ON THE WAITING LIST FOR FOUR MONTHS! THIS IS A SAFETY WARNING REGARDING POSSIBLE FIRE ON MY NEW VEHICLE. FURTHER INQUIRY BY MYSELF HAS REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: 1. CHRYSLER DODGE RAM IS NOT PRODUCING ADEQUATE NUMBERS OF THE SIMPLE PART THEREBY JEOPARDIZING SAFETY OF PURCHASERS AND THEIR FAMILY/FRIENDS. 2. THE FEW PARTS THAT CHRYSLER DODGE DOES PRODUCE GOES TO VEHICLES ON THE LOT SO THAT THEY CAN SELL THESE VEHICLES ASAP. THIS SHOWS NO REGARD FOR THE SAFETY OF PRIOR PURCHASERS. TO THINK THAT CHRYSLER DODGE CANNOT ORDER / PRODUCE THE PART IN MASS QUANTITIES WHEN THEY KNEW THE RECALL WAS COMING IS NONSENSE. BY THE WAY, THIS IS IN REGARDS TO THE W03 2019-2020 SAFETY RECALL. *TR
