NHTSA Campaign: 18V907000

Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2011-2017 Optima, 2012-2017 Sorento and 2011-2018 Sportage vehicles that previously received an engine replacement under recall number 17V-224, warranty, or the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) Product Improvement Campaign. The high pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, possibly causing a fuel leak.

Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

Fix: Kia has notified owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pipe, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began January 17, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC172.

Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the HECU for leaking brake fluid and replace the HECU if necessary, free of charge. Your engine began running hot and the check engine light came on while driving. When you reached 30-35 mph, you heard a knocking sound from the engine. A service center confirmed the problem is with the motor or head gasket. The repair will likely involve removing the cylinder head and replacing the gasket, and possibly addressing underlying overheating issues.

Your 2015 Kia Sorento is consuming an excessive amount of oil, requiring top-ups every 1,000 miles and producing a burning smell. You reported this issue to your dealer in early 2024, but they refused to address it under warranty, citing that your 10-year-old vehicle and mileage exceeded coverage limits. After the original dealer closed and a second dealer also declined to help, Kia customer service has not provided cooperation despite multiple calls.

Your headlight bulbs are failing very frequently — sometimes every month — on both high and low beams, forcing you to constantly replace them at your own expense. The low beams are already dim, and when one fails, you're forced to drive on high beams for safety since you can't see properly. Even upgrading to brighter bulbs hasn't solved the problem, as they also fail quickly.

The low beam headlights do not illuminate the highway sufficiently to drive safely. I lowered the aim of my high beam to be able to drive at night and not blind approaching drivers. This is unacceptable for a modern vehicle to be permitted to be sold in this condition.

My problem is with the headlights, in that the condenser lens for the low beam lights has clouded so badly that driving at night has become so dangerous. I have changed the bulbs twice in an effort to correct the problem to no avail. And with the sealed unit not able to be disassembled to clean the lens, my only option is to replace the units at approximately $800 each.

Your 2015 Kia Sorento suddenly stopped in the middle of heavy traffic with no warning, causing the engine, oil, and battery warning lights to come on all at once. The dealership diagnosed a rod knock issue (internal engine damage) and said the engine needs to be replaced, though you've requested further inspection under an extended warranty with no response yet. The sudden stop created a serious safety hazard since you couldn't gradually slow down or steer to safety in heavy rain and traffic. Repair will likely require a complete engine replacement.
