Open Safety Recalls (6)
NHTSA Campaign: 18V363000
Component: AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Kia Forte, Forte Koup, 2011-2013 Kia Optima and 2011-2012 Kia Optima Hybrid and Sedona vehicles. In the event of a crash, the air bag control unit (ACU) may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags and seat belt pretensioners from deploying.
Risk: If the frontal air bags and seat belt pretensioners are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.
Fix: Kia will notify owners. For model year 2011 Sedona vehicles, Kia will instruct dealers to verify the ACU part number and, if necessary, install an extension wire harness kit between the ACU Connector and the Vehicle Harness Connector. For all other affected vehicles, Kia will instruct dealers to install the extension wire harness kit. The recall began September 28, 2018. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC165.
NHTSA Campaign: 20V101000
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM:FUEL RAIL
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2011-2012 Sedona vehicles. The fuel rail may crack from exposure to heat generated within the engine compartment, resulting in a fuel leak.
Risk: A fuel leak increases the risk of fire.
Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel rail, free of charge. The recall began June 16, 2020. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC188.
NHTSA Campaign: 16V387000
Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM
Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2006-2012 Kia Sedona vehicles manufactured from June 15, 2005, through August 14, 2012 and originally sold in, or currently registered in Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may break due to corrosion from salt water exposure such as from road salt use.
Risk: A broken control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Kia will notify owners and dealers will replace the front lower control arms on 2006-2007 models. 2008-2012 models will either have their front lower control arms replaced or additional anti-corrosion coating will be applied. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on July 27, 2016. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC133.
NHTSA Campaign: 16V389000
Component: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH
Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Kia Sedona vehicles manufactured from June 15, 2005, through April 04, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.
Risk: If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Fix: Kia will notify owners and dealers will replace the secondary hood latch or clean and lubricate the latch, depending on the vehicle's location and the condition of the latch. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on July 27, 2016. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall number is SC134.
NHTSA Campaign: 13V114000
Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.
NHTSA Campaign: 13V550000
Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM
Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2006-2012 Kia Sedona vehicles manufactured from June 15, 2005, through August 14, 2012 originally sold in, or currently registered in Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, West Virginia or the District of Columbia. In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may break due to corrosion resulting from prolonged exposure to salty environments.
Risk: A broken control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Kia will notify owners and dealers will inspect the degree of corrosion of the front lower control arms, and will either rustproof or replace them, free of charge. The recall began on December 20, 2013. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall number is SC100.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 61)
Fuel/propulsion System →4 issues
You noticed a strong raw gasoline smell when your vehicle stopped at lights or after turning off the engine, which got progressively worse while driving and entered the cabin through the heater vents. Your mechanic found cracks in the plastic fuel rail with gasoline pooling near the fuel injectors, which he replaced along with some defective fuel injectors—your mechanic noted you were lucky not to have experienced an engine fire. The repair involved replacing the cracked fuel rail and fuel injectors, which cost approximately $2,000 in parts and labor.

You noticed a strong fuel smell while driving your van. When you returned to the vehicle later, the smell was much stronger. After getting home and opening the hood, you discovered fuel pouring from the fuel injector rail onto the engine. A mechanic found that the fuel rail had cracked along a weld seam, spraying fuel across the engine. This issue is a known recall problem on other Kia and Hyundai models, though not yet on your specific vehicle. The fix will likely involve replacing the fuel rail assembly.

Suspension →2 issues
Your front strut springs broke on both sides, puncturing holes in both front tires and causing blowouts. The broken springs also revealed severe rust on the lower control arm and its mounting point to the subframe, making these components unsafe to repair. You were fortunate the tire failures happened at low speed; if they had occurred while driving at highway speeds, you could have lost control of the vehicle.

Suspension,electrical System,service Brakes →1 issue
Your van has multiple serious mechanical problems that appeared shortly after purchase. The power sliding door takes 10-15 minutes to close, the steering wheel locks up unexpectedly, brake fluid is leaking at a rate of about a quart per day and the brake lines are in poor condition, and the front driver's side CV joint is broken. Additionally, the van smells strongly of black mold, suggesting it may have been in a flood. Repairs will likely include replacing brake lines, the CV joint, the sliding door motor or mechanism, and steering components, plus addressing any water damage.

Electrical System,service Brakes,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your Sedona has experienced multiple electrical and brake system failures. First, the fuel pump relay needed replacement, then the ABS and ESC warning lights appeared due to faulty wheel speed sensors. Most recently, all three warning lights (ESC, ABS, and Brake) came on together and you lost braking ability, which resulted in a crash. The repair will likely involve replacing the wheel speed sensors and diagnosing the brake system to restore normal braking function.

Electrical System,structure →1 issue
Your right passenger sliding door opened while your son was in the car and wouldn't close. After taking your minivan in for a recall repair, the door got stuck open on your next use. There's a risk that a passenger could fall out or be injured. Kia's dealer confirmed the issue but wouldn't cover the burnt-out electronic controller under warranty, leaving you with a large repair bill.

Electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your vehicle lost power and shut down while driving, with warning lights for ABS, battery, brakes, and check engine appearing on the dashboard. A mechanic found the alternator wasn't charging the battery, so they replaced it—but the problem happened again. Even after replacing three alternators and two batteries, the shutdown issue continued and the vehicle remained unfixed.

Electrical System →1 issue
Your van is losing all electrical power while driving, leaving you with no lights, gauges, or control over windows or transmission—it can only creep forward at 2-3 mph before stopping. This has happened repeatedly even after your mechanic replaced the alternator twice and the instrument cluster, with each repair only lasting a few days before power cuts out again. The root cause remains unclear, though your mechanic indicates this is a known problem among Kias without a proven solution. The issue may require extensive electrical system diagnosis to identify whether the problem is a faulty battery, wiring harness, or a deeper electrical control module failure.

Electrical System, unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your brake light, battery light, and ABS light all came on at the same time, even though you didn't engage the emergency brake and had the battery and fluids checked by a technician who said everything was fine. The lights won't turn off, which is concerning even though the vehicle isn't behaving unusually. This may be related to a faulty brake light switch, alternator issue, or ABS sensor problem that will need diagnostic testing to identify which component is causing all three warning lights to illuminate.
