NHTSA Campaign: 20V088000

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Sedona and 2007-2009 Sorento vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.

Risk: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the vehicle is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.

Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the main junction box to prevent power from being directed to the HECU when the vehicle's ignition switch is turned off, free of charge. The recall began June 5, 2020. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC186.

NHTSA Campaign: 16V389000

Component: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH

Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Kia Sedona vehicles manufactured from June 15, 2005, through April 04, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

Risk: If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Fix: Kia will notify owners and dealers will replace the secondary hood latch or clean and lubricate the latch, depending on the vehicle's location and the condition of the latch. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on July 27, 2016. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall number is SC134.

NHTSA Campaign: 16V387000

Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM

Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2006-2012 Kia Sedona vehicles manufactured from June 15, 2005, through August 14, 2012 and originally sold in, or currently registered in Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may break due to corrosion from salt water exposure such as from road salt use.

Risk: A broken control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Kia will notify owners and dealers will replace the front lower control arms on 2006-2007 models. 2008-2012 models will either have their front lower control arms replaced or additional anti-corrosion coating will be applied. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on July 27, 2016. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC133.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V114000

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.

Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V550000

Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM

Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2006-2012 Kia Sedona vehicles manufactured from June 15, 2005, through August 14, 2012 originally sold in, or currently registered in Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, West Virginia or the District of Columbia. In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may break due to corrosion resulting from prolonged exposure to salty environments.

Risk: A broken control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Kia will notify owners and dealers will inspect the degree of corrosion of the front lower control arms, and will either rustproof or replace them, free of charge. The recall began on December 20, 2013. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall number is SC100.

highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: May 2018

Your driver's side master switch has stopped working, so you can't use it to lock/unlock all doors or control the windows — you now have to lock and unlock manually with the key, and the remote key fob won't work either. Additionally, your gas tank release button has stopped functioning, forcing you to manually access the fuel door from the trunk. Both mechanics who inspected the vehicle checked fuses and ran diagnostics but couldn't identify the electrical fault.

highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Apr 2017

Your car won't crank or start, even though the battery is in good condition with no corrosion. You hear a very faint clicking noise from under the hood when you try to start it, and the starter itself appears to work fine. This issue has left you stranded twice. The problem could be with the starter solenoid or the main circuit board under the dashboard, and a mechanic will need to diagnose and replace whichever component has failed.

Wheels,service Brakes1 issue
criticalWHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Mar 2019

The bolts that hold your front brake calipers in place can loosen and fall out while you're driving on highways or city streets. When this happens, the caliper becomes loose and rubs against the inside of your wheel rim, damaging both the caliper and rim, and eventually causing brake caliper failure. This repair will likely involve replacing the caliper mounting bolts, inspecting the calipers and rotors for damage, and possibly replacing damaged components.

Air Bags1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Dec 2018

Your airbag warning light turns on and off without a clear pattern. This happens intermittently, meaning it's not constant. The warning light should stay off during normal driving, so this indicates an electrical or sensor problem in your airbag system. A technician will need to scan your vehicle's diagnostic system and likely replace a faulty airbag sensor or repair a wiring connection.

NHTSA #: 11163182
Electrical System,engine1 issue
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
Filed: Nov 2018

Your engine is leaking oil from the valve cover gasket on the front cylinder bank, which drips onto the alternator and damages it. When the alternator fails, your charging system stops working and the warning light comes on, leaving your car running on battery power alone. Once the battery drains, your engine will shut off and won't restart, creating a dangerous situation. Fixing this will require replacing the valve cover gasket and likely the alternator.

NHTSA #: 11150094
Air Bags,service Brakes1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
CrashFiled: Feb 2015

Your van was hit broadside in an intersection collision. The front airbags deployed before impact, but your 84-year-old passenger hit the windshield when the actual crash occurred. You suffered facial abrasions, bruising and cuts to your left arm and hand, and severe cervical (neck) spine damage from being jostled around after the airbag deployment. The issue may involve airbag timing, deployment force, or passenger positioning relative to airbag inflation.

highEXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: May 2021

A plastic L-shaped part broke off underneath your brake pedal, causing your brake lights to stay on intermittently even when you're not braking. This has been draining your battery. The fix will likely involve replacing the broken brake light switch or the plastic component that activates it.

NHTSA #: 11418672
Steering,suspension1 issue
highSTEERING,SUSPENSION
Filed: Nov 2020

You heard an abnormal noise coming from the front of your vehicle while braking. A mechanic inspected it and found that your lower control arm had severe rust damage and needed replacement. This is a suspension component that helps your wheels stay properly aligned and safe while driving.

NHTSA #: 11373016
Electrical System, electronic Stability Control (esc)1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
Filed: Dec 2016

Your car won't shift out of Park, and the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) warning light comes on, requiring multiple attempts to get the vehicle into Drive. This problem was recalled and repaired in 2013, but returned by 2014 within 20,000 miles—and when Kia attempted the repair again, they installed the wrong part, requiring a third visit to fix it properly. The repair typically involves replacing or servicing the shift interlock solenoid and ESC control module components.

NHTSA #: 10934974
Exterior Lighting,service Brakes1 issue
highEXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Dec 2016

Your brake lights have stopped working properly and are not illuminating when you apply the brakes. This is a safety concern since other drivers won't be able to see when you're braking. Your vehicle may not be covered under a related recall (campaign 13V114000), so you'll likely need to have the brake light system inspected and repaired by a mechanic.

NHTSA #: 10929018
Steering,electrical System1 issue
highSTEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Aug 2016

When you drive through a deep puddle (around 6 inches), your power steering may stop working and warning lights appear on your dashboard. The steering returns to normal after about 15 seconds. This problem happens when you're turning left or right through the water. The issue likely involves water getting into electrical components that control the power steering system.

NHTSA #: 10895152
Engine1 issue
highENGINE
Filed: Oct 2014

Your engine isn't responding properly when you try to accelerate from a stop — instead, it just idles and keeps RPMs at around 500. The dealer diagnosed this as a faulty computer chip that controls engine performance. Replacing the engine control module (computer chip) should resolve the acceleration issue.

NHTSA #: 10643837
Suspension1 issue
mediumSUSPENSION
Filed: Jun 2019

Your suspension control arm has developed rust, which a technician noted during inspection. A dealer applied undercoating as a temporary solution, but Kia has refused to replace the rusted control arm, saying the undercoating is sufficient. You may want to monitor the control arm condition since rust can worsen over time and affect suspension performance.

Suspension,exterior Lighting,seats1 issue
mediumSUSPENSION,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SEATS
Filed: Oct 2014

Your car's ESC (Electronic Stability Control) warning light keeps turning on, and your speedometer occasionally stops working until you restart the engine. The dealer found alignment issues on your vehicle, particularly with the rear passenger side wheel, and discovered a missing bolt on the rear axle that should be there according to factory specs — but the replacement bolt isn't currently available. Additionally, your driver's seat won't stay in the up position. Fixing these issues will likely require a dealer visit for the alignment, bolt installation once available, and seat pump replacement.
