Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2011-2012 Sedona vehicles. The fuel rail may crack from exposure to heat generated within the engine compartment, resulting in a fuel leak.
Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel rail, free of charge. The recall began June 16, 2020. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC188.

You noticed a strong raw gasoline smell when your vehicle stopped at lights or after turning off the engine, which got progressively worse while driving and entered the cabin through the heater vents. Your mechanic found cracks in the plastic fuel rail with gasoline pooling near the fuel injectors, which he replaced along with some defective fuel injectors—your mechanic noted you were lucky not to have experienced an engine fire. The repair involved replacing the cracked fuel rail and fuel injectors, which cost approximately $2,000 in parts and labor.

You noticed a strong fuel smell while driving your van. When you returned to the vehicle later, the smell was much stronger. After getting home and opening the hood, you discovered fuel pouring from the fuel injector rail onto the engine. A mechanic found that the fuel rail had cracked along a weld seam, spraying fuel across the engine. This issue is a known recall problem on other Kia and Hyundai models, though not yet on your specific vehicle. The fix will likely involve replacing the fuel rail assembly.

You received a recall notice for your 2011 Kia Sedona's fuel system, but the dealership told you the replacement fuel rail part wasn't available and wouldn't be ordered. You contacted Matt Taylor Kia in Lancaster, Ohio, and they said they would inspect your vehicle but wouldn't replace the fuel rail. You feel the manufacturer has taken too long to make this recall repair happen, and the parts don't seem to be reaching dealers.

Your 2011 Kia Sedona has developed an abnormal odor inside the vehicle while driving at various speeds, and a mechanic diagnosed fuel leaking from the fuel tank, though they couldn't reproduce the issue during inspection. The leak has recurred even though the vehicle wasn't repaired. The problem may be addressed by a known recall (NHTSA campaign 20V101000) related to fuel system issues. The repair will likely involve inspecting and sealing or replacing the fuel tank to stop the leak.

I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 40 WEST WHEN NY WIFE & I SMELLED GAS COMING THROUGH THE AIR VENTS. AFTER GETTING TO GREENSBORO, NC, DISCOVERED THAT WE HAD A GAS LEAK IN IN FRONT FUEL ROD. AFTER CHECKING ONLINE I DISCOVERED THAT WE WERE NOT THE ONLY KIA SEDONA OWNERS THAT ARE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE. THE FUEL ROD IS MADE OF PLASTIC AND IS UNDER PRESSURE.
THERE WAS AN INTERMITTENT GAS SMELL COMING THROUGH AIR VENTS. THERE WAS NO VISIBLE INDICATION OF FUEL LEAKAGE. THE SOURCE WAS A CRACKED FUEL RAIL. THE PROBLEM WAS FOUND AND REPAIRED BY THE DEALER. THE ENGINE AND RUNNING GEAR WERE STILL UNDER WARRANTEE BUT THE RAIL WAS NOT INCLUDED.
WHILE DRIVING A STRONG FUEL SMELL WAS COMING THROUGH THE VENTS. TOOK TO DEALER THEY SAID NO LEAK - INSTEAD TRIED TO SOLVE THE FUMES BY CLEANING AC VENTS. DROVE IT HOME AND THE FUEL SMELL IS STILL QUITE STRONG. HAD ANOTHER PERSON LOOK AT IT WHILE THE CAR WAS RUNNING AFTER WE DROVE IT AROUND THE BLOCK AND REMOVED THE ENGINE COVER THE FUEL WAS DRIPPING FROM THE FUEL RAIL. THAT IS WHERE THE FUMES WERE COMING FROM.
THE FUEL INJECTOR RAIL UNDER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD HAS CRACKED BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND INJECTORS (AS COUNTING FROM THE SERPENTINE BELT SIDE OF ENGINE). MY WIFE AND I NOTICED THIS ON SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2018 BECAUSE OF A STRONG GAS SMELL AFTER OUR VAN WAS PARKED. I REMOVED THE INTAKE MANIFOLD THINKING A FUEL INJECTOR SEAL HAD FAILED BUT DISCOVERED THE CRACKED RAIL INSTEAD. THE CRACKED RAIL WAS ALLOWING FUEL TO PUDDLE ON TOP OF THE ENGINE AND THE FUEL WAS BOILING OFF WHEN THE VAN WAS HOT.
CRACK IN THE FUEL RAIL. PROFUSE LEAKING OF GASOLINE ABOVE THE ENGINE WHEN THE CAR IS ON. IMMEDIATE DANGER OF CATCHING FIRE MAKING IT DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. MECHANIC DUMBFOUNDED THAT THE RAIL PIPE IS MADE OF PLASTIC AND NOT METAL.
