Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 566)
Steering →5 issues
Your steering column has a fault that matches a known Kia safety recall. Your car's diagnostic system shows an angle sensor error (code C1259) that the recall documentation mentions. When you took your car to a Kia dealership in Puerto Rico, they said the recall only applies to the mainland U.S., but Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and should be covered. Since this affects your steering, you need this repaired immediately by contacting Kia customer service or another authorized dealer.

Your steering wheel feels loose when you turn at various speeds, and it has locked up completely three times while backing up, leaving your car immobile. Warning lights for the electric power steering (EPS) and electronic stability control (ESC) systems are on. The issue started around 5,800 miles and has prevented you from driving the vehicle.

Your steering column is making a clunking noise, which feels unsafe to drive. Kia has acknowledged a problem with the steering coupler that can fail, and they've extended the warranty for this issue — but only in certain states. You believe your car should be covered under this warranty extension regardless of where you live.

Your steering column may be damaged. The problem started with your horn not working and wheel control buttons becoming unresponsive, which you initially thought was an electrical issue. You then noticed a noise while driving over 60 mph, and the noise got worse when braking or turning. The steering column likely needs inspection and possible replacement to address both the electrical components and the mechanical damage causing the noise.

Engine →2 issues
Your engine shut off completely while you were driving on the highway, and the car wouldn't restart. Kia determined your engine needs replacement under their recall settlement, but they're refusing to replace it because your car has a salvage title. You may need to escalate this with Kia corporate or consult with an attorney, since the recall settlement appears to apply regardless of title status.

Your 2014 Kia Optima is burning oil excessively and producing fumes that enter the cabin, causing a burning smell and headaches. The dealership has confirmed an engine problem and is in the process of arranging an engine replacement, but you've been instructed to continue driving the car in the meantime. The fix will involve replacing the engine.

Unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
Your 2014 Kia Optima has repeatedly overheated while driving, causing the check-engine light to flash and coolant to leak. When this happens, your engine loses power, creating a risk of stalling on the road. The dealership has attempted multiple repairs without resolving the issue. Fixing this will likely require diagnosing the source of the coolant leak and addressing the underlying cause of overheating, which could involve the radiator, thermostat, water pump, or head gasket.

Power Train,engine →1 issue
Your engine failed again, even though Kia replaced it before. The failure left your car unable to start or run, and created a risk of the engine suddenly shutting off while you're driving. You had to have the vehicle towed and couldn't drive it safely. This is the second time this engine has failed in your car.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic, air Bags →1 issue
Your car's brakes failed to stop the vehicle during a front-end collision at 30-35 MPH, and the airbags did not deploy despite the impact. The airbags may have been removed or disconnected, and no warning light appeared before the crash. Fixing this would require a complete inspection and reinstallation of the airbag system, brake system diagnosis, and verification that all safety sensors are properly connected.

Electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your oil pressure sensor is leaking oil onto the engine's electrical wiring, intake, and exhaust pipes, which creates a fire hazard. Oil mixing with hot engine components and electrical systems poses a serious safety risk. This appears to be the same defect covered under a 2019 Kia recall (RCONL-19V101-0000) for 2011-2014 models, though your dealership says your vehicle's VIN isn't included. The fix will involve replacing the oil pressure switch and potentially the oil pan to stop the leak and eliminate the fire risk.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic →1 issue
Your 2014 Kia Optima lost power while driving and began smoking from under the hood, with no warning light appearing beforehand. You were notified about a recall (NHTSA Campaign 21V331000) for the hydraulic brake system, but the dealer said they couldn't perform the repair because other unknown work needed to be done first, and your vehicle was never diagnosed or repaired. The issue occurred at approximately 130,000 miles and may require brake system inspection and potentially other repairs to address the root cause of the power loss and overheating.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic, fuel System, Gasoline →1 issue
Your 2014 Kia Optima may have a fuel leak causing the vehicle to run out of fuel unexpectedly, even after refueling. You might also notice a strong fuel smell coming through the air vents, and warning lights (check engine and ABS) appearing on your dashboard. The dealer identified a damaged battery terminal as a separate issue that needs repair, and the fuel leak may require inspection and sealing of fuel system components.

Electrical System,structure,service Brakes →1 issue
Your 2014 Kia Optima's paint has started to peel and flake in multiple areas, particularly on the hood and roof, and the problem is getting worse over time. You've maintained the vehicle properly with no accidents or repainting, but the defective paint is affecting the car's appearance and resale value. The owner believes this is a known factory paint or clear coat defect affecting similar Kia models from this period. Fixing this would likely require a professional repaint or clear coat application by a body shop.
