TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH OVER A BUMP IN THE ROAD, THE WHEELS BEGAN TO WOBBLE AND SHAKE. THE CONTACT SEARCHED ONLINE AND DISCOVERED AN UNKNOWN RECALL THAT REFERENCED THE "DEATH WOBBLE." THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HALL CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM VIRGINIA BEACH (3152 VIRGINIA BEACH BLVD, VIRGINIA BEACH, VA 23452, 877-475-0721) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS REFERRED TO THE MANUFACTURER FOR ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT TO SPEAK WITH NHTSA TO FILE A VEHICLE SAFETY COMPLAINT. HAVE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND DOES NOT MATTER WHERE. VEH. PULLS EXTREMELY HARD NOT WANTING TO GO FORWARD. MANY YOUTUBE VIDEOS HAVE ALSO BEEN DOCUMENTED ON THIS. MAYBE IF I MARKED A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT OR DEATH CAUSED BY THIS, JEEP WOULD DO SOMETHING. I HAVE COMPLETED A FIX THAT HAS BEEN GOOD NOW FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. REPLACED BALL JOINTS, ADDED TO STEERING SHOCKS TO KEEP STEERING FORWARD, REPLACE BOTH TIE RODS, FRONT END ALIGNMENT, NEW SHOCKS (ALL 4). HAVE PAID OUT MY PART ON KEEPING MY JEEP SERVICED. BUT, JEEP STILL HAS NOT ANSWERED THIS COMPLAINT NOW FOR YEARS. EXPAND QUESTION: WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN. IT HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE I BOUGHT IT NEW IN 2007. JEEP DEALERSHIP COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG.

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY GOING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH THE VEHICLE HIT SOMETHING ON THE ROAD (SMALL BUMP) WHICH RESULTED IN A VIOLENT SHAKING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE SINCED LEARNED THAT THIS CONDITION IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE DEATH WOBBLE. THE CONDITION WAS SO VIOLENT I WAS FORCED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THIS HAS NOW HAPPENED TWICE IN THE LAST FOUR WEEKS. THE FIRST INSTANCE I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT, THE SECOND INSTANCE I WAS IN A CURVE. THE CONDITION DOES NOT RESOLVE ITSELF ALTHOUGH THE MAGNITUDE OF THE VIBRATION DOES DECREASE WITH SPEED. THE VEHICLE IS UNDRIVABLE WITH THIS CONDITION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OF 55-70 MPH. THE CONDITION IS INDUCED BY NORMAL UNDULATIONS AND VARIATIONS IN THE ROAD (I.E.: NOT ONLY A HUGE POTHOLE). AFTER STOPPING ON THE SHOULDER AND INSPECTING THE UNDERCARRIAGE I NOTICED NOTHING UNUSUAL. I RESUMED DRIVING HOWEVER, THE CONDITION DID NOT RESOLVE ITSELF AND I WAS FORCED TO DRIVE BELOW 40 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY (AS I HAD NO OTHER OPTIONS). AFTER THE CAR SAT FOR ~30 MINS I DROVE THE VEHICLE AND THE CONDITION WAS NOT PRESENT. EACH OCCURRENCE WAS RESOLVED THE SAME WAY BY ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO REST. CHRYSLER DID RELEASE A TECHNICAL SERVICE ADVISORY THAT DESCRIBES WHAT TO CHECK. MY ISSUE IS THAT BASED ON THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ENCOUNTERING PROBLEMS WITH RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE (MY VEHICLE IS AT 65K) THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE VICE THE CONSUMER TO COVER THE REPLACEMENT OR PREMATURELY WORN PARTS.

I BOUGHT A USED 2007 JEEP WRANGLER 2 DR, 4X4 SOFT TOP, IN OCT 20014. IT HAD 82,000 MILES. I HAD NO PREVIOUS BUYING ON THIS MODEL. I DRIVE MOSTLY HIGHWAY MILES IN NORTH EAST OHIO. I DRIVE ALMOST 90 MILES, ROUND TRIP, PER WORK WEEK. I NOTICED A SLIGHT BOUNCE IN THE FRONT END, SUSPENSION DURING HIGHWAY POSTED SPEEDS OF 65 MILES PER HOUR. I CHANGED THE THE SHOCKS 4 EA.AFTER MY FRONT STRAIGHT AXIAL BEGAN TO BOUNCE UP AND DOWN, WELL THE BOUNCE WAS WORSE, AFTER A SHORT PERIOD OF TRYING TO HANDLE ROAD CONDITION, EVEN CHANGING ROUTE, TO AVOID THE BOUNCE, AT HIGHWAY SPEED 60 MILES AND UNDER, IT WAS COLD OUT 40 DEGREES, HEAVY TRAFFIC CHRISTMAS TIME, RUSH HOUR, MY JEEP WENT INTO A RADICAL BOUNCE CALLED " DEATH WOBBLE " AS NOTED IN THE JEEP WORLD, NOT NOTED BY JEEP, I HAD THREE, IN THE ROW, ONE WORSE, THAN THE ONE BEFORE. THE BOUNCING CAUSED A TRANSMISSION COOLING LINE TO DIS-LARGE, FROM A SITED COUPLING, TO THE ENGINE RADIATER. THE LOSE OF 4 QUARTS OF TRANSMISSION FLUID TO SPILL ON THE 5 LANE HIGHWAY. I NOTICED A LOSE IN SPEED, SMOKE AND RPM ADVANCE, FROM 1800 TO 4000 RPMS IN LESS THAN A MINUTE. NOW I HAD TO NAVIGATE MY WAY THROUGH 4 LANES OF HEAVY 60 MILES TO 75 MILE AN HOUR TRAFFIC, WITH OUT GETTING HIT. WITHIN TWO MILES I MANAGED TO PULL OVER TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. I HAD A FLASHLIGHT, I LEFT THE ENGINE RUNNING, BECAUSE IT WAS GETTING DARK OUT, I WENT UP FRONT AND LOOKED AT THE FRONT END AND SAW TRANSMISSION FLUID. I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, AND CALLED FOR A TOW. 2 HOURS LATER, PLUS 77.00 DOLLARS, I WENT HOME. I LIVE ON A BUDGET. I WROTE JEEP, BUT WITHOUT A WORD, FROM THEM. SO I LOOKED AT MY OWNERS MANUAL, AND SAW NOTHING ABOUT CHANGING SHOCKS, COIL SPRINGS AT MILES MAINTENANCE SERVICE INTERVALS. I NOTICED YOUR NAME, SO I CONTACTED YOU FOR HELP. THIS HAPPENED ON BOTH STOCK SUSPENSION AND MODIFIED SUSPENSION AND SO FAR, IT HAS HAPPENED EASILY WELL OVER 160 TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF THIS LAST YEAR (I LOST COUNT AS IT HAPPENS FEQUENTLY). I'VE DISHED OUT WELL OVER $1,000 TO FIX (SO FAR), HAVE HAD TWO ACCIDENTS (NOV. 2, 2014 AND APR. 14, 2015, BOTH MINOR WITH NO POLICE REPORTS MADE EITHER TIME) AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THIS, COUNTLESS NEAR MISSES, MANY A DRINK SPILLED ON THE FLOOR BOARD OR MYSELF THEN THE FLOOR THANKS TO EITHER THE GUT-WRENCHING WOBBLE ITSELF, OR HAVING TO SLAM ON THE BREAKS. EVEN MORE UNSAFE, IS THAT EVERYTIME IT HAPPENS, THE ONLY WAY TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE IS TO STOP IMMEDIATELY OR RISK FURTHER DAMAGE AND/OR LOSING CONTROL. THIS MEANS HAVING TO SLAM ON THE BREAKS MANY TIMES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND HOPE THAT 1.) I'M ACTUALLY DRIVING AS MY FIANC WOULDN'T HAVE THE STRENGTH TO KEEP CONTROL 2.) I MAINTAIN ENOUGH CONTROL TO GUIDE THE JEEP TO AN EMERGENCY LANE SO I CAN STOP SAFELY. 3.) HOPE THAT OTHER DRIVERS ARE PAYING ATTENTION AND DON'T HIT ME. THIS IS REDICULOUS, AND THE MORE IT HAPPENS, THE LESS SAFE I FEEL, AND THE MORE RISK THAT MYSELF AND MY FAMILY ARE PLACED IN. JEEP HAS A TYPICAL RESPONSES OF, "WE DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG.", "THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO.", "WE ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, BUT CANNOT OFFER A REMIDY.", OR "LET'S REPLACE THIS. SORRY IT DIDN'T HELP. STEERING STABILIZER IS WAS TO SMALL TO HANDLE EVERYDAY DRIVING AND THE BALL JOINTS ARE JUNK. 600 BUCKS LATER I FIGURED IT OUT SINCE THE DEALERSHIP DIDN'T WANT TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUE AND TALKING TO MECHANIC FRIENDS IT'S A COMMON REPLACEMENT SINCE THE COMPANY USES CHEAP PARTS. ALSO HAVE LOTS OF ISSUES WITH THE ESP, EGR VALVE, FALSE CODES FROM EGR AND O2 SENSORS. AND TODAY MY AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND HAS GONE OFF. AND EVERY SINGLE TIME I GET GAS IT'S SPILLS OUT ALL OVER THE PLACE AND THE THROW OUT BEARING WHINES WHICH I WAS TOLD IS ALSO JUNK AND CAN FAIL RIGHT FROM PURCHASE TO OVER 100,000 MILES. IT WOULD BE VERY NICE IF CHRYSLER WOULD FIX THE CHEAP PARTS MADE FOR THE JEEP JK MODEL. JUST LOOK AT FORUMS YOU WITH FIND THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS MODEL OF JEEP. *TR

THE VIOLENT SHAKING CONTINUED AS I PULLED THE VEHICLE TO SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY UNTIL I REACHED A SPEED OF ABOUT 15-20MPH. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO 2 DIFFERENT JEEP DEALERSHIPS; ONE IN SAN DIEGO AND ONE IN LA. THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I REPLACED THE SHOCKS, TIRES, AND DAMPER ALONG WITH MULTIPLE ALIGNMENTS AND THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. I'M SO AFRAID TO DRIVE IT THAT I RENTED A CAR.

MY 2007 JEEP WRANGLER X HAS EXPERIENCED WHAT SOME ARE CALLING "DEATH WOBBLE". A VIOLENT UNCONTROLLABLE SHAKING OF THE FRONT WHEELS WHILE TRAVELING AT SPEEDS ABOVE 45MPH. WHEN THE WHEELS ENCOUNTER A BUMP, EVEN THE SLIGHTEST, IN THE ROAD, THE VEHICLE SHAKES VIOLENTLY AND WILL NOT STOP SHAKING UNTIL I COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THIS IS EXCEEDINGLY DANGEROUS ON THE INTERSTATE AND COULD CAUSE SERIOUS COLLISIONS. THIS OCCURRED OVER 40 TIMES BEFORE I COULD SOLVE THE ISSUE. AFTER INSTALLING AN AFTERMARKET HEAVY DUTY FRONT TRACK BAR, THE WOBBLE CEASED TO EXIST. MY EVALUATION: THE FRONT TRACK BAR THAT COMES STANDARD EQUIPPED ON THE JK-CHASSIS WRANGLER IS NOT SUITABLE FOR SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 45MPH AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REPLACED WITH A STRONGER ONE BEFORE SERIOUS DAMAGE CAN OCCUR TO OWNERS, THEIR VEHICLES AND PASSENGERS, AND OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD. *TR

1) I PURCHASED A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER X WITH 8,650 MILES ON THE VEHICLE IN 2008, KEPT THE VEHICLE AS IT WAS, AND IT NOW HAS 43,000 MILES. THERE WERE NO EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE OTHER THAN STANDARD SAFE DRIVING PRACTICES. 2) THE FAILURE IS COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS "DEATH WOBBLE" AND IS WELL DOCUMENTED ON VARIOUS WEBSITES. THE CONTACT ALSO NOTED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS DID NOT PROVIDE ENOUGH COVERAGE SO THE DEALER ADJUSTED THEM; HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM WAS NOT CORRECTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 26,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 37,688.

VEHICLE: 2007 JEEP WRANGLER 2-DOOR 4X4. THE VEHICLE VIBRATION (FRONT END(?)) HAS EXISTED SINCE PURCHASED IN MARCH 2007 AND WAS REPORTED TO THE DEALERSHIP AT FIRST SERVICE AND SUBSAQUENT SERVICES. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE VEHICLE DEVELOPES A VIBRATION BEGINNING AT 60 MPH THROUGH 65 MPH AND ENDING AT 70 MPH. THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPEATEDLY BALANCED ALL THE TIRES AND STATES THEY ARE WITHIN TOLERANCE. IN JUNE 2008 THE CHRYSLER AREA REPRESENTATIVE CAME AND TOOK THE VEHICLE FOR TEST DRIVES AS WELL AS OTHER LIKE VEHICLES OFF THE LOT. ALL TESTED HAD VIBRATIONS AT APPROXIMATELY THE SAME SPEEDS. IN JULY 2008 CHRYSLER SENT A SUPER TECH. WHO ALSO TOOK THE VEHICLE FOR A TEST DRIVE AS WELL AS OTHER NEW LIKE VEHICLES OFF THE LOT AND THE PROBLEM EXISTED IN ALL VEHICLES. THE CONCLUSION BY BOTH CHRYSLER REPRESENTATIVES IS THAT THE VEHICLE VIBRATION PROBLEM THAT I EXPERANCE IN MY 2007 WRANGLER 2-DOOR 4X4 IS IN FACT INHERENT TO THIS PRODUCT LINE. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FOR THE PURPOSE OF PULLING IT FOUR WHEELS DOWN BEHIND A MOTORHOME AND AT THE 60-65 MPH SPEED RANGE, WHICH IS THE BEST ECOMOMY ZONE FOR A MOTORHOME. A PROBLEM AS I DESCRIBED ABOVE OCCURING AT HIGHWAY SPEED COULD ADVERSELY AFFECT THE HANDLING OF THE VEHICLE DURING PERIODS OF LIMITED TRACTION, WHICH COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT ENDANGERING THE LIVES OF THE OCCUPANTS AND OTHERS ON THE ROADWAY. *TR

DRIVING 2007 JEEP WRANGLER X MODEL ON DAMP DAY. HITTING SHALLOW PUDDLES WITH RIGHT SIDE TIRES ON SIDE OF THE ROAD AT ABOUT 55 MILES AN HOUR. I HAVE ALWAYS DONE THIS WITHOUT TOO MUCH PROBLEM. ROAD WAS FLAT AND STRAIGHT WITHOUT POTHOLES. HIT PUDDLE AND VEHICLE BEGAN SHAKING VIOLENTLY AS IF A TIRE WAS ABOUT TO FALL OFF AT HIGH SPEED. EXTREME MEDIUM FREQUENCY VIBRATION CONTINUED UNTIL VEHICLE WAS ALMOST AT A COMPLETE STOP. IT WAS REPEATABLE. THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED WAS ON A FLAT STRAIGHT WELL PAVED ROAD IN DOWNTOWN CITY STREET. I WAS GOING BETWEEN 30 AND 35 MILES PER HOUR AND ON A DRY ROAD AND TRAVELED OVER A RAILROAD TRACK TRANSITION (SLIGHTLY ELEVATED CONCRETE TO TRANSITION OVER TRACKS SMOOTHER) THIS SET UP ANOTHER UNCONTROLLABLE MEDIUM FREQUENCY VIBRATION IN THE VEHICLE THAT COULD NOT BE STOPPED UNLESS THE VEHICLE COMES TO ALMOST A COMPLETE STOP. OTHERS ON WWW.JK-FORUM.COM HAVE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR SITUATIONS. DEALERS ARE BLOWING SOME OF US OFF. IT SHOULD BE MENTIONED THAT I ALWAYS TRAVEL WITH THE ANTI-SKIT MITIGATION SYSTEM OFF. IT APPEARS THAT A LATERAL OSCILLATION IS STARTING UP IN THE FRONT END OF THE JEEP STEERING SYSTEM. BUT THAT IS JUST A GUESS. I REPORTED IT TO MY DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID (OH YEAH, THAT IS THE JEEP DEATH WOBBLE). IT IS PRETTY NORMAL, ALTHOUGH THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT ON THE NEW BODY STYLE. *TR
