THE PLASTIC TRIM PANELS ON THE TWO PASSENGER DOORS BEGAN TO CRACK MAINLY AROUND THE DOOR HANDLE BUT IN OTHER PLACES ALSO. THEY CRACKED SO BADLY THAT THE DOOR HANDLE HAD NOTHING TO HOLD ON TO AND JUST FELL OFF. THE PASSENGERS CAN NOT GET OUT OF THE CAR FROM THE INSIDE. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. I DID CONTACT JEEP SEVERAL TIMES BUT THEY ARE CLAIMING THIS IS NOT A DEFECT. PERHAPS ONE HANDLE FALLING OFF IS NOT A DEFECT BUT WHEN IT HAPPENS ON MULTIPLE HANDLES IN THE SAME CAR ANT TO MULTIPLE OWNERS, IT SURE SEEMS LIKE A DEFECT TO ME. ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO MY 7 YEAR OLD GRANDDAUGHTER TRIED TO GET OUT OF THE JEEP AND DOOR HANDLE WAS PLASTIC WAS CRACKED AND JUST HANGING. THIS PAST WEEK END WHEN WE HAD THE GRANDCHILDREN AGAIN MY HUSBAND MENTIONED THE DOOR HANDLE WAS BROKEN AND COULD NOT EXIT THE VEHICLE FROM THAT DOOR. WE DECIDED TO LOOK AT ALL THE DOOR HANDLES ARE ALL CRACKED AND BROKEN. I DECIDED TO RESEARCH ONLINE AND THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN GOING ON AND NEGLECTED FOR YEARS. IF AN EMERGENCY OCCURRED WE WOULD BE TRAPPED IN THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. I WAS VERY UPSET. WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE LESS THAN A YEAR AGO AND WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION BECAUSE HAD ONE OWNER. WHY WAS THIS NOT RECALLED, THE PLASTIC IS TOO THIN TO SUPPORT THE HANDLE!! *JS

HOWEVER, BOTH OF MY REAR DOOR HANDLES ARE COMPLETELY BROKEN. I HAVE TO OPEN THE DOORS FROM THE OUTSIDE. MY FRONT TWO DOOR HANDLES ARE CRACKED WITH PIECES MISSING BUT STILL OPERATIONAL FOR THE MOMENT, BUT I'M SURE IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME. AT THIS POINT & THROUGH MY SEARCHES ONLINE IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS A GREATLY OCCURRING ISSUE & NEEDS TO BE DEALT WITH ON THE MANUFACTURER LEVEL. THERE HAS BEEN NOTHING DONE AS OF YET TO REPLACE THE PARTS AS I FEEL IT IS A MALFUNCTION OF THE VEHICLE & NOT NORMAL WEAR & TEAR. THE ESTIMATED COST TO REPLACE EACH DOOR PANEL WITH A SIMILARLY CHEAP QUALITY PRODUCT IS $800. I BELIEVE IT IS A DEFECT IN THE PLASTIC RESIN MANUFACTURING PROCESS FOR THE EARLY 2005 GRAND CHEROKEES BECAUSE ALL FOUR DOOR PANELS HAVE CRACKED IN THE EXACT SAME PLACE. CHRYSLER WAS CONTACTED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS AND DENIES THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE. ONE OF THE DOOR HANDLES ON MY 2005 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED HAS BROKEN OFF AND IS UNUSABLE. THE OTHER THREE ARE CRACKING AND I AM FEARFUL THAT THEY WILL BE BREAKING OFF SOON. THE HANDLES AND THE SUPPORTING DOOR FRAMES ARE ALL CRACKING IN THE SAME LOCATION AND THE HANDLES THEN FALL OFF. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN UNWILLING TO EVEN DISCUSS THE ISSUE. THE DEALER STATES IT IS $680 PER DOOR TO FIX. PARTS TO FIX THE DOOR HANDLES ARE UNAVAILABLE FOR SALE OUTSIDE THE DEALERSHIPS. DUE TO THE SAFETY ISSUE OF BEING UNABLE TO EXIT THE BACK SEAT AREA FROM THE INSIDE, I AM FEARFULL TO ALLOW ANYONE TO RIDE IN THE BACK SEAT AT THIS TIME. IF AN ACCIDENT WERE TO OCCUR, THEY COULD BE UNABLE TO EXIT THE CAR FROM THE INSIDE. BAD PLASTIC RESIN COMPOUND WAS USED TO MANUFACTURE 2005 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE IN SEVERAL BATCHES OF DOOR PANELS, USED TO HOLD DOOR HANDLES. THE PLASTIC CRACKS, CRUMBLES, AND DISINTEGRATES AROUND THE DOOR HANDLE AFTER ONLY A FEW (3-5) YEARS OF USE. MANY DOOR HANDLES ARE NO LONGER USABLE. THIS CREATES A FIRE SAFETY ISSUE AND A CRASH SAFETY ISSUE, BECAUSE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS CANNOT USE THE DOOR HANDLE TO ESCAPE FROM THE VEHICLE. 2005 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LETTER FORWARDED FROM FTC - FROM CONGRESSWOMAN GINNY BROWN-WAITE ON BEHALF OF CONSTITUENT RE PROBLEMS WITH CHRYSLER CORPORATION. *NJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE CASINGS BEHIND THE INSIDE DOOR LATCHES BEGAN TO DETERIORATE UNTIL ALL FOUR DOORS CASINGS CRACKED WHICH RESULTED IN DIFFICULTY EXITING THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED IT WAS APPARENT THE MATERIALS USED FOR THE CASINGS WERE DEFECTIVE. A CASE IN POINT, THE TWO BACK DOOR CASINGS DISINTEGRATED IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT THOSE DOORS WERE SELDOM USED. *JB
