I NOTICED I WAS FILLING MY TANK MORE THEN I SHOULD HAVE . THEN THE SMELL OF GAS WAS VERY STRONG WHEN I TOOK THE CAR FOR A RECALL ON THE GAS TANK? I TOLD THEM TO PLEASE CHECK FOR LEAKS THAT WAS IN 2008 THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG AND WHAT THEY FIXED WILL STOP ANY LEAKS . WELL DRIVING WITH MY KIDS IN THE CAR WE WERE AT A RED LIGHT AND THE SMELL WAS SOOO STRONG I GOT OUT TO CHECK THE PROBLEM THE CAR BEHIND ME CAME OVER AND SAID IF HE CAN HELP AND ALSO NOTICED THE STRONG SMELL AT WHICH HE ADVISED ME NOT TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE IT IS A HAZARD TO MY FAMILY AND THE PUBLIC SO THEIR WAS A MECHANIC SHOP DOWN THE STREET AO I LEFT IT THEIR THEY CHECK IT THE DAY AFTER AND SAID THIS HAS SOMETHING TO DUE WITH THE DEALER AND TRY TO CONTACT THEM BECAUSE IT WOULD COST ME 360. AND SEE IF MAYBE CHRYSLER HAS ANY RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE I DID CONTACT CHRYSLER AND TOLD THEM EVERYTHING BUT THEY SAID THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DUE WITH THIS AND IF THEIR WAS AN ACCIDENT OR FIRE THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED HARM THEN THEY WOULD SEND A INVESTIGATION UNIT BUT FOR KNOW THAT'S REALLY MY PROBLEM .. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, A WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED, A CHIME SOUNDED, AND THE GAS GAUGE INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF FUEL. THE GAS GAUGE THEN WENT BACK UP, INDICATING THAT FUEL WAS PRESENT AND THE WARNING LIGHT DIMMED. THE WEATHER WAS SUNNY AND APPROXIMATELY 80 DEGREES. THE CONTACT BELIEVES THAT HIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN RECALL # 97V194000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY). THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 25,386.

IN FEBRUARY OF 1998 WE RECEIVED A LETTER DATED FEBRUARY 19, 1998. THE LETTER DESCRIBED A POSSIBILITY OF AN INACCURATE FUEL GUAGE DUE TO A FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT. WE CALLED THE DEALER AND WERE TOLD TO WAIT FOR NOTIFICATION FROM THE FACTORY. NOTIFICATION NEVER CAME. WE CHECKED ON OTHER OCCASIONS BY PHONE OR WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN FOR SERVICE. WE WERE TOLD NOTHING. ON TWO OCCASIONS, ONE RECENTLY OUR VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED FOR A NO START CONDITION. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS EXAMINED IT WAS FOUND TO BE OUT OF FUEL (ON BOTH OCCASIONS). WE TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO HAVE THE PROBLEM RECTIFIED AND WAS TOLD OUR VEHICLE WAS NOT INVOLVED IN THE RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN # (97V194000). WE CONTACTED CHRYSLER AND WERE TOLD IN SO MANY WORDS "SORRY WE CAN NOT HELP". I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND HOW WE RECEIVED THE LETTER IN THE FIRST PLACE, AND SECONDLY WHY THE VEHICLE WOULD BE DOING EXACTLY WHAT THE LETTER AND FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND THE RECALL BULLETIN SAYS IT WILL DO.*AK

THIS HAPPENS WHEN PARKED, WHEN DRIVING, WHEN IDLING, WHEN YOU FIRST START THE ENGINE AND WHEN YOU'VE BEEN DRIVING FOR HOURS. IT HAPPENS REPEATEDLY - THE POINTER WILL FLOP FROM EMPTY TO THE PROPER LEVEL UP TO 30 TIMES WITHIN 2 MINUTES (NOT AN EXAGGERATION). SOMETIMES, IT DOES NOT GO BACK TO THE PROPER LEVEL - I HAVE FILLED THE TANK COMPLETELY, WATCHED IT GO TO E, THEN DRIVEN 25 MILES HOME WITH THE POINTER ON E THE WHOLE TIME. AGAIN ON AUG. 25/97, THE INDICATOR SHOWED ONE-FOURTH FULL. THE JEEP SHUT DOWN ON FREEWAY. CONSUMER WAITED 15 MINUTES JEEP STARTED, PULLED TO THE SIDE OF ROAD AND SHUT DOWN AGAIN. THEY PUT 2-5DOLLARS OF GAS IN JEEP, DROVE TO GAS STATION. JEEP TOOK ONLY $10.00 OF GAS AND STARTED TO SPILL OUT OF TANK. THE INDICATOR SHOWED HALF-FULL. THE NEXT DAY SHE DROVE TO GAS STATION, TANK TOOK $25.00 MORE AND INDICATOR SHOWED FULL. *AK *SLC
