Your engine control module (ECM) is shorting out, causing your engine to run with the wrong air-fuel mixture, lose power while driving or stopped, and even shut off completely — which happened to you on the highway and put you in danger. The short also caused backfiring and gas to flood your muffler. Additionally, your vehicle information center display isn't working, and your EVAP canister fittings have deteriorated, allowing fuel vapor hoses to lose their seal and create emissions problems. Fixing this will likely require replacing the engine control module and inspecting or replacing the EVAP canister fittings and hoses.

1997 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO POWER STEERING AND BRAKE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING. CONSUMER STATES " VEHICLE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN IGNITION SWITCH RECALL". *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED AS SHE WAS MASKING A TURN, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STOPPED. THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING AND NO BRAKES. SHE WAITED A MINUTE AND USED THE KEY TO RE-START THE VEHICLE. ON FEB 27TH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN. THE CONSUMER TO THE VEHICLE TO HER MECHANIC. HOWEVER, HE WAS UNABLE TO FIND A PROBLEM. *JB

THE DASH HEADLIGHT SWITCH KEEPS GOING OUT. IT HAS BEEN REPLACED 4 TIMES. THE LIGHTS WILL FLICKER AND THAN GO OUT. *TR
HEADLIGHTS WHILE DRIVING WERE OCCASIONALLY TURNING OFF AND ON. SIDE LIGHTS REMAINED ON AND INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS REMAINED ON. UPON INVESTIGATION FOR CAUSE, DISCOVERED CONNECTOR ON HEADLIGHT/DIMMER SWITCH WAS MELTED DUE TO EXCESSIVE HEAT BUILDUP. SUSPECT DUE TO SEVERAL CONNECTORS ON DIMMER SWITCH WERE LOOSE ADDING RESISTANCE TO THE FLOW OF CURRENT CREATING EXCESSIVE HEAT IN SWITCH AND CONNECTOR. SWITCH WAS REPLACED AND PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED. SINCE THE SWITCH PROVIDES POWER DIRECTLY TO THE HEADLIGHTS, THIS CREATES A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD. THERE SHOULD BE A RELAY CONFIGURATION TO THE HEADLIGHTS TO REDUCE CURRENT FLOW THROUGH THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH. *TR

1997 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO 4.0L I6 BEGAN STALLING IN 2010 UNDER SEEMINGLY RANDOM CONDITIONS. REPLACED SEVERAL PARTS (SPARK PLUGS, WIRES, DISTRIBUTOR CAP & ROTOR, IGNITION COIL, PCM) OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS TO NO AVAIL. THE DIFFERENCE CURRENTLY IS THAT THE STALL NOW ONLY SEEMS TO OCCUR AT TEMPERATURES LESS THAN 65-70 DEGREES F. THE COLDER THE ENVIRONMENT, THE WORSE STALL PROBABILITY. COLDER TEMPS ALSO INCREASE PROBABILITY VEHICLE WILL NOT START AFTER A STALL. VEHICLE WILL ALWAYS FIRE UP ON A COLD START. STALL OCCURS AT VARYING SPEEDS (INCLUDING AT IDLE), BUT ABOVE APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH STALL BECOMES WHAT SEEMS LIKE A MISFIRE. BELIEVE I HAVE NARROWED THE PROBLEM DOWN TO AN INTERMITTENT CONNECTION IN THE WIRING HARNESS, EITHER AT THE GRAY PCM CONNECTOR (CLOSEST TO BODY), OR IN THE WIRE LEADING TO THIS CONNECTOR. PUTTING ENOUGH PRESSURE ON THE WIRES UNDER THE PCM IN A CERTAIN DIRECTION WILL CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO HICCUP OR STALL. ONLY CODE EVER SHOWN RELATED TO STALL WAS THE UNSPECIFIC P0351 IGNITION SYSTEM CODE. FORTUNATELY, IF A STALL OCCURS AT HIGHER SPEEDS, ENGINE/VEHICLE SPEED MUST STILL DROP TO A CERTAIN LEVEL BEFORE POWER STEERING/BRAKING ARE LOST. OTHERWISE VEHICLE WOULD BE TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. NEVERTHELESS THIS IS STILL A HAZARDOUS CONDITION. *TR

IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE SURGED AND PROCEEDED TO INCREASE ACCELERATION WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS BEING DEPRESSED. IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT CRASHED AND SLID THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE INTO A TRUCK. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
THE GAUGES ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL STARTED BOUNCING BACK AND FORTH, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD THE CODE READ AND IT SAID THE COOLANT TEMP SENSOR WAS BAD, CHANGED THAT STILL SAYS THAT SENSOR IS BAD. I CANNOT PASS EMISSIONS AND INSPECTION TO GET LICENSED. *TR

MY VEHICLE TOLLED TO ARMORY GARAGE, BECAUSE AT THAT TIME, INSURANCE HAD TO KEEP SENDING SOMEONE TO COME AND RESTART THE VEHICLE. OR IT WILL START BUT THEN TURN AROUND AND STALL LATER. AFTER PAYING $1300 PLUS TO ARMORY GARAGE, THEY ONLY CHARGED ME FOR DIAGNOSIS AND FIXING PROBLEMS WITH A BATTERY BEING OVERDRAWN. THEY CLAIM TO HAVE REPLACED THE BCM COMPUTER. HOWEVER, AFTER PAYING ALL THAT MONEY I STILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE. I HAVE REPLACED, STARTER, ALTERNATOR, BATTERY, COMPUTER MODULE WITH ARMORY GARAGE, IGNITION COIL FIXED. ALL I KEEP GETTING IS THAT THE EMISSIONS IS THE PROBLEM BECAUSE IT STATES BIG AND SMALL LEAK. HOWEVER, EVEN TODAY IT HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. I HAVE SPENT CLOSED TO OVER $3500 ON MY VEHICLE TO GET IT RUNNING AND IT STILL STALLS AFTER ALL THE ABOVE HAVE BEEN REPLACED. P0442, P0455, P0351, ARE THE LAST CODES TO THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER, AN EVAP PURSE SOLENOID HAS BEEN FIXED AS WELL. ALL THIS MONEY AND STILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE STALLING AND RUNNING BUT TURNS OFF RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. *TR
VIC DISPLAY SHOW "COOLANT SENSOR BAD." ONLINE INVESTIGATIONS REVEAL MANY OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM OVER THE YEARS. THEIR TRIAL SOLUTIONS HAVE RANGED FROM REPLACING THE "COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR," THE COOLANT LEVEL SENSOR," REPLACING "CONNECTING WIRING" TO THE VIC, AND TO REMOVING THE VIC TO REPAIR SOLDER JOINTS AND CRACKS AT THE CIRCUIT BOARD THAT IS LOCATED IN THE VIC. MOST REPORT THAT THE FIRST THREE ATTEMPTED REMEDIES DID NOT RESOLVE THE DEFECT. SOME REPORT SUCCESS IN RE-SOLDERING JOINTS ON THE CIRCUIT BOARD. THE LATTER,--REMOVING THE VIC AND REPAIRS AT THE CIRCUIT BOARD-- IS AN INVOLVED PROCESS AND REQUIRES EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE AND REPAIR TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT. ALL REPORT THAT THIS CONDITION LEFT UNRESOLVED COULD LEAD TO THE ENGINE OVERHEATING AND/OR FAULTY DATA SENT TO THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM, AND POSSIBLE ENGINE FIRE. WITH SO MANY COMPLAINTS ON THIS DEFECT, A RECALL OR A MANUFACTURE REPAIR BULLETINS, SHOULD BE ISSUED AT THE MANUFACTURER'S EXPENSE. *TR

THIS HAS OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY WITH NO WARNING OR DASH INDICATOR LIKE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON. NUMEROUS REPAIR ATTEMPTS AND THOUSANDS SPENT SINCE,PROBLEM STILL OCCURS NOW AVERAGE OF TWICE WEEKLY. OCCURS AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS,TEMPERATURES AND CONDITIONS. HAVE FOUND ONLINE REFERENCE TO MANY SIMILAR STALLING PROBLEMS FOR PEOPLE AROUND US. DEALER SAID THERE IS NO RECALL OR BULLETINS THAT WOULD HELP FIX,VERY HARD TO DIAGNOSE. FINALLY FOUND THAT IF JIGGLE WIRE CONNECTOR TO ENGINE E.C.U. COULD MAKE ENGINE STALL. E.C.U. HAS BEEN REPLACED BUT WEBSITE ELECTRICAL ENGINEER SAID THE WIRING PULLS DOWN ON THE CONNECTORS EVENTUALLY FRACTURING THE SOLDER HOLDING CONNECTOR PINS AGAINST INNER CONNECTIONS CAUSES THIS.HE PROVED BY RESOLDERING AS NEEDED BUT SAID THE WIRE ROUTING AND 90 DEGREE ANGLE TO THE CONNECTORS WILL CAUSE RECURRENCE. *TR
SINCE 2007 THE JEEP HAS STALLED WITHOUT WARNING AND THERE HAS BEEN TROUBLE WITH INTERIOR LIGHTING. RECENTLY A AAA EMERGENCY REPAIR TRUCK CHANGED THE BATTERY AND SUGGESTED NEW BATTERY CLAMPS. A VISIT TO AN AUTO REPAIR STORE REVEALED THAT THE CLAMPS ON THE CAR WERE THE WRONG SIZE. WHEN THE AUTO STORE WORKER REPLACED THE CLAMP WITH THE CORRECT SIZE THE LIGHTING SYSTEM STARTED TO WORK. IT HAS BEEN SEVERAL WEEKS AND THERE HAS BEEN NO STALLING. I THINK THE CLAMPS WERE THE ORIGINAL ONES ON THE VEHICLE. *TR

THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE IGNITION COIL BUT THE REPAIR DID NOT REMEDY THE STALLING FAILURE. THE MECHANIC SUGGESTED THAT THE COMPUTER BE CHANGED IN THE VEHICLE BUT WARNED THE CONTACT THAT THE REPLACEMENT MAY NOT REMEDY THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE NO ONE COULD DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 153,000.
MY 97 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE STALLS INTERMITTENTLY. USUALLY SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 15 AND 60 MILES PER HOUR. NO WARNING, NO LIGHTS AND NO SHUDDERS;IT JUST QUITS. MOST TIMES IT WILL RESTART ON ITS OWN BUT LATELY IT HAS TAKEN LONGER TO RESTART. THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR, THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR, IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE, COIL, SPARK PLUGS, SPARK PLUG WIRES, DISTRIBUTOR CAP, ROTOR AND CAM SHAFT POSITION SENSOR HAVE ALL BEEN CHANGED OR CHECKED. I AM CURRENTLY RUNNING THE CAR WITH A LARGE HOSE CLAMP AROUND THE COMPUTER AND IT'S PLUGS. SO FAR MY "FIX" IS WORKING. MY STALLS HAVE OCCURRED ON STRAIGHT ROADS, IN A CURVE I BELIEVE THIS PROBLEM COULD LEAD TO A LOSS OF CONTROL DUE TO NO POWER STEERING/BRAKES WHEN THE CAR IS DEAD. *TR

I OWN A 1997 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO THAT WILL START AND RUN FINE AND THEN AT ANY TIME NO MATTER THE WEATHER, TIME, HIGHWAY OR CITY IT WILL JUST DIE. I WAS NEARLY IN A HEAD ON COLLISION THIS WEEK DURING A PASSING SITUATION ON A TWO LANE ROAD. I HAVE SPENT HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS ON MECHANICS TRYING TO DIAGNOSE AND FIX THE PROBLEM TO NO AVAIL. I HAVE A 1997 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE THAT HAS AN ELECTRICAL DEFECT IN THE POWER DISTRIBUTION CENTER (FUSE BOX ) UNDER THE HOOD. IT BLOWS FUSES TO THE AUTOMATIC SHUTDOWN RELAY,POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. BLOWER MOTOR FAILED AT 78K MILES EXCESSIVE LIQUID DRAINING WHEN RUNNING AC WAS TOLD THAT MOTOR HAD BEEN "REDESIGNED" AND THAT PARTS ALONE WOULD COST OVER 300.00 BECAUSE IN ADDITION TO REDESIGNING THE MOTOR, A NEW WIRING HARNESS HAS TO BE INSTALLED!!! REMEMBER THE 300.00 IS FOR THE HARD PART AND WIRING ONLY, NOT THE LABOR TO INSTALL...THIS IS COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS WHEN A MOTOR FOR THE SAME MODEL MANUFACTURED A YEAR EARLIER IS ONLY 20.00!!!!! FIRST PROBLEM : IGNITION STOPS WORKING, IF STEERING IS TRUNED AND THEN TRIED IT STARTS.THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS ANYTIME. DASH LIGHT DIMS IF I PUTS ON THE HEADLIGHT AND FLICKERS WHILE DRIVING.
CONSUMER'S VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AND ERRATIC OPERATION. INTERIOR LIGHTS WILL FLICKER ON AND OFF/ ELECTRIC DOOR LOCKS WILL LOCK AND UNLOCK, AND LIGHT ON DASH SHOWED THAT DOORS WERE OPEN IN VEHICLE. ALSO, WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION, DRIVER'S SEAT MOVED FORWARD AND UP, WHICH PINNED DRIVER TO STEERING WHEEL. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO PULL VEHICLE TO SIDE OF ROAD. DEALERSHIP HAS EXAMINED VEHICLE, AND COULD NOT DETERMINE THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/ATTACHMENTS.*AK
WHILE TRAVELING 40MPH VEHICLE STALLED AND DIED. NO PRIOR WARNINGS, AND VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. TOWED IT TO DEALER. *AK
JEEP IN QUESTION, HIT BLACK ICE AND FLIPPED OVER GUARDRAIL .NEITHER OF AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, FRONT BUMPER TORE OFF. JEEP WAS TURNED OFF AT COMPLETION OF ROLLOVER, AND STILL BROKE INTO FLAMES. *AK
THE SENDING UNIT WAS ORIGINALLY RECALLED UNDER CAMPAIGN NUMBER 97V194000. WHEN I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER, I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE ARE NO RECALLS OUTSTANDING ON MY VEHICLE. THE UNIT WAS SUPPOSEDLY REPLACED BY THE MANUFACTURER BEFORE IT WAS SOLD TO ME. HOWEVER, IT IS APPARENT TO ME THAT THE REPLACEMENT SENDING UNIT IS NOT ANY MORE RELIABLE THAN THE ORIGINAL PART.
THE WIRE HARNESS THAT RUNS ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE IS ROUTED ABOVE THE TRANSMISSION CASE, AND IS DIRECTLY UNDER A SCREW THAT HAS THE POINT EXPOSED TO THE WIRE HARNESS. WHEN TURNING LEFT OR HITTING LARGE BUMPS, A FUSE BLOWS, WHICH CAUSES THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING, RESULTING IN LOSS OF CONTROL. IT IS IN SUCH A PLACE THAT YOU CANNOT SEE THE SCREW, BUT CAN FEEL IT WITH YOUR FINGER. THE WIRE THAT SHORTED FOR ME WAS THE HEATER FOR THE O2 SENSOR. THERE ARE MANY WIRES IN THE HARNESS AND COULD SHORT ANY DIFFERENT ONE. THIS COULD BE AVOID BY REROUTING THE WIRE HARNESS AWAY FROM EXPOSED SHARP SCREWS.
WHILE DRIVING ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WENT OUT. FUSES WERE CHECKED AND REPLACED TO REPAIR. THE NEXT DAY THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL WENT OUT OTHER THAN THE CRUISE CONTROL. THE DEFECT DOES NOT ALLOW THE CONSUMER TO HAVE ACCESS TO SEE SPEEDOMETER AND OTHER IMPORTANT PARTS. *AK
ALTERNATOR MOUNTING BRACKET BROKE OFF WHEN STARTING ENGINE IN DRIVEWAY, 1 INDIVIDUAL MECHANIC AND 2 JEEP DEALER MECHANICS SAID THEY'VE NEVER SEEN THIS HAPPEN BEFORE THAT THE METAL ACTUALLY BROKE, MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING AND CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT, AND IF IT WAS A DEFECTIVE PART, OTHER JEEP OWNERS SHOULD BE WARNED. *AK
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD SMOKE WAS COMING OUT OF DEFROSTER. STOPPED VEHICLE, THEN CAR CAUGHT ON FIRE. CONTACTED MANUFACTURER. *AK

WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE WILL STALL UNEXPECTEDLY DUE TO A FAULTY WIRING HARNESS WHICH CAUSED THE FUSE TO BLOW OUT. DEALER REPLACED AND REPAIRED THE WIRING HARNESS 3 TIMES. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK

ENGINE STOPS WITHOUT COMMAND AT SPEEDS UP TO 65 MPH. DIAGNOSTICS REVEALED AN APPARENT LOSS OF IGNITION RUN TO ENGINE'S COMPUTER.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILED. *YC
THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START BECAUSE OF A FAULTY RELAY SWITCH. THE SWITCH WAS REPLACED. *AK
IMPROPER READING OF FUEL GAUGE DUE TO FAULTY CIRCUT CHIP BOARD FOR FUEL CONTROL, RENDERING VEHICLE INOPERATIVE. *AK
VEHICLE STALLS WITH NO WARNING AND CANNOT BE RESTARTED, VEHICLE HAS TO BE TOWED. THIS IS DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. *AK
CONSUMER STATES WHEN SHE WAS PARKING HER VEHICLE IT SPONTANEOUSLY CAUGHT ON FIRE, NO INJURIES. *AK
