FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2012 Jeep Patriot and Compass vehicles manufactured October 18, 2011, through May 7, 2012. Due to an incorrectly manufactured transfer tube, the transfer of fuel from the secondary side to the primary side of the fuel tank may be interrupted, causing the engine to stall.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank transfer tube free of charge. An interim letter was mailed to owners on May 30, 2013. Owners were notified by Chrysler on July 19, 2013, that parts are now available. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N17.

CHRYSLER IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 JEEP PATRIOT AND COMPASS VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM DECEMBER 17, 2011, THROUGH JANUARY 2, 2012. SOME VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH A FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY CONTAINING A DAMAGED ROLL-OVER VALVE.

Fix: CHRYSLER WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL TANK, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT MAY 25, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

Your Compass's engine suddenly seized while your daughter was driving at normal speed, even though she pressed the accelerator pedal. The vehicle wouldn't restart on its own and had to be jump-started to get it running again. No warning lights appeared before the engine quit, leaving you stranded in the middle of the road. The engine seizing could require a complete engine replacement or major internal repairs.

Even though this issue is linked to a known recall campaign, your vehicle wasn't included in it, and the dealer couldn't help. The problem hasn't been fixed yet.

When driving the vehicle will hesitate then stall after refueling. Happen after almost every refueling case. Believe it is a stuck rollover valve that is allowing gas to enter vent lines and causing the stall. When accelerating the vehicle suddenly dies and there is a complete loss of all systems. No power steering to help get off the side of the road. Often there are no Check Engine Lights or other warnings. Obviously if your engine suddenly dies when accelerating this can cause major safety concerns. I had this happen 3 times while trying to merge onto an interstate. Thankfully I was in the right lane and able to get off to the shoulder and avoid an accident. Have not had a mechanic verify but it is a very common problem with these vehicles and the manufacturer needs to address this.

I HAVE A 2012 JEEP COMPASS 4 X 4 AND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO FUEL THE VEHICLE THE FUEL PUMP NOZZLE WILL NOT STAY LOCKED IN TO PUMP FUEL UNTIL FULL. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE ROLL OVER VALVE IN THE FUEL TANK WAS STUCK AND THAT THE FUEL TANK WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I READ ABOUT THE SAFETY RECALL NHTSA # M11 AND M14 WHICH STATED THAT 2012 JEEP COMPASS AND PATRIOT PRODUCED BETWEEN 12/17/2011 AND 01/02/2012 HAD DAMAGED ROLL OVER VALVES INSTALLED IN THE TANKS AND WHERE SUBJECT TO THE RECALL. THE COMPLAINT I HAVE IS MY VEHICLE WHICH WAS PRODUCED ON 4/12/2012 HAS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM BUT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.

WHEN PUTTING FUEL IN THE GAS TANK, THE PUMP WILL KICK OFF AND FUEL WILL SPLASH OUT ON YOU. YOU HAVE TO HOLD THE NOZZLE AND JUST LET THE FUEL TRICKLE IN. IT DOES NOT MATTER THE ANGLE OF NOZZLE OR HOW FAR IN OR OUT IT IS. IT WILL CUI OFF AT ANY TIME USUALLY AT A HALF A GALLON. YOU THEN HAVE TO HOLD IT AND TRICKLE THE GAS IN WHICH DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH FUEL YOU NEED IT CAN TAKE 45 PLUS MINUTES. THE BACK SPLASH WILL GET ON YOUR HAND AND CLOTHES .I HAVE TO WEAR A RUBBER GLOVE,AND HAVE HAD TO TAKE MY SHOES OFF AND PUT IN PLASTIC BAG,AS WELL AS GO CHANGE CLOTHES.THIS IS NOT SAFE NOR IS IT NORMAL AS A LOT OF JEEP OWNERS ARE HAVING SAME PROBLEM.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BRANDYWINE CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM LOCATED AT (3807 KIRKWOOD HWY, WILMINGTON, DE 19808 (302) 998-2271) WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED, AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE THEN WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED AND CONFIRMED THAT THE FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 12V142000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE) AS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO THE FAILURE HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. 2012 JEEP COMPASS CHECK BALL ISSUE I HAVE A 2012 JEEP COMPASS WITH 59,000 MILES ON IT. DURING A FUEL STOP TWO WEEKS AGO, I DISCOVERED THE NOZZLE WOULD SHUT OFF AFTER FUELING FOR A FEW SECONDS. TO ENSURE IT WASN'T THE NOZZLE AT THE FUEL PUMP, I TRIED 3 OTHER PUMPS AT DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS. SO, I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET A DIAGNOSIS. THE MECHANIC SAID THE CHECK BALL VALVE IN THE FUEL TANK IS STUCK AND THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE THIS ISSUE REPAIRED IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FUEL TANK. THE TOTAL COST WITH THE NEW FUEL TANK AND LABOR WILL BE $1,600. JUST TO HAVE A SECOND OPINION, I TOOK IT TO A WELL RESPECTED LOCAL MECHANIC IN MY TOWN AND HE TOLD ME THE SAME THING. I KNOW THE SMALLER JEEPS, LIKE THE COMPASS, HAVE HAD FUEL TANK RECALLS IN THE PAST BECAUSE OF VENTILATION ISSUES AND THE ROLL OVER VALVES. THERE WERE A LOT OF PEOPLE ON JEEP FORUMS COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS. SOME FOLKS WERE ELIGIBLE FOR RECALLS AND SOME WERE NOT. THE OTHER FUEL TANK ISSUE I READ ABOUT WAS THE ISSUE I AM HAVING WITH THE CHECK BALL BEING STUCK AND HAVING TO PAY FOR A NEW FUEL TANK. PERSONALLY, I THINK IT IS RIDICULOUS AND I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE, THAT A PERSON HAS TO PAY TO HAVE AN ENTIRE NEW FUEL TANK INSTALLED BECAUSE A COMPANY IS MANUFACTURING VEHICLES WITH DEFECTIVE FUEL TANKS. SO, WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DRIVE A HUNDRED MILES AND THE NEW FUEL TANK CHECK BALL GETS STUCK? DO I HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE MECHANIC, PAY $1,600 AND HAVE THIS PERSON INSTALL A NEW TANK EVERY TIME THE CHECK BALL GETS STUCK? IT'S SENSELESS THAT THE CONSUMER HAS TO WORRY ABOUT A VEHICLE'S UNRELIABILITY BECAUSE OF A MANUFACTURER'S FLAW AND THE COMPANY NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I CALLED JEEP CORPORATE AND THEY SAID THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO HELP ME. I WANTED TO LET THE NHTSA KNOW THAT THE FCA CAR COMPANY IS CONTINUING TO SEND FLAWED PRODUCTS OUT THE DOORS OF THEIR FACTORIES AND IGNORING THE ISSUE.

IT DOES NOT ALLOW ME TO PUMP GAS PROPERLY DUE TO A DAMAGED ROLLOVER VALVE AS STATED BY MY MECHANIC. HOWEVER, MY VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED IN TE RECALL. IT SHOULD BE INCLUDED AND I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. FILES CAN BE UPLOADED BY REQUEST. RESEARCHED THE INTERNET AND MANY OTHER JEEP COMPASS VEHICLES HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.

THE FIRST TIME THEY GAVE IT BACK TO US AND SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH IT.THIS TIME I HAVE STILL NOT HEARD OF A RESOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM. AS I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT 70 MPH AND THE GAS GAUGE SHOWING 1/4 OF A TANK LEFT, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY QUIT. IT WOULD RESTART. AFTER PUTTING SOME GAS IN IT STARTED IMMEDIATELY. SINCE THEN, AND BEFORE, I HAVE LET THE LEVEL RUN DOWN WELL BELOW A 1/4 OF A TANK WITH NO INCIDENT. MY CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY, BUT I CALLED JEEP BECAUSE THIS SCENARIO IS EXACTLY WHAT WAS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL NOTICE I RECEIVED A YEAR OR SO AGO, WHICH SAID THAT AT HIGH SUSTAINED SPEED A FUEL INTAKE HOSE IN THE GAS TANK COULD COLLAPSE, RESULTING IN THE ENGINE TURNING OFF SUDDENLY AND A POSSIBLE CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENT. I HAD THE RECALL PROCEDURE COMPLETED BUT I DID NOT TAKE ANY LONG TRIPS UNTIL THE DAY THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE JEEP RECALL SPECIALIST TOLD ME TO TAKE THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. THE DEALER TOLD ME IF THEY DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG IT WOULD COST $99 FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. I ASKED IF THEY WOULD REMOVE THE FUEL TANK TO CHECK THE HOSE AND THEY SAID NO I DID NOT LEAVE THE CAR BECAUSE I DIDN'T THINK THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM, OR DUPLICATE IT. I CALLED JEEP AGAIN; THEY CALLED THE DEALER WHILE I WAS ON THE LINE AND ASKED THEM TO LOOK AT THE CAR AGAIN. WHEN I TOOK IT BACK I WAS TOLD THE SAME THING; THAT IF THEY COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM IT WOULD COST ME $99. THEY THEN ADVISED ME TO TRY TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AGAIN, MYSELF, BY DRIVING THE CAR ON THE INTERSTATE UNTIL IT QUIT, AND THEN HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER. I COULDN'T BELIEVE I WAS HEARING THAT SO I CALLED THE JEEP RECALL DEPARTMENT AGAIN, AND AFTER SOME CONFERRING WITH OTHER PEOPLE THERE, THE SPECIALIST TOLD ME THAT YES, THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED TO DO; DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL IT QUITS. I WAS ON A ROAD TRIP IN MY 2012 JEEP COMPASS (4X4 LATITUDE VERSION) FROM THE NASHVILLE, TN AREA TO THE WASHINGTON D.C. AREA, IN AUGUST, AND WAS MONITORING MY FUEL CONSUMPTION ON THE TRIP. I NOTED MY FUEL GAUGE HAD BEEN TELLING ME THAT AT THE FIRST HALF OF THE GAS TANK I HAD BEEN GETTING AROUND 210 MILES OUT OF THAT FIRST HALF OF THE TANK. MY SECOND HALF OF THE TANK ONLY GAVE ME AROUND 90 MILES TO THE HALF TANK, WITH ABOUT A GALLON AND A HALF REMAINING IN THE TANK WHEN I REFUELED. I PURCHASED THE JEEP FEBUARY 28TH 2013, FROM ORR HONDA TEXARKANA TX. I WAS NOT INFORMED THE VEHICLE HAD ANY PROBLEMS OR RECALLS AT THAT TIME. WITHIN A COUPLE DAYS OF HAVING THE VEHICLE I NOTICED THE SEAT BELTS WOULD SPONTANEOUSLY UNLOCK AND OPEN. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE SEEMED TO HAVE AN ACCELERATION PROBLEM IT WAS SLUGGISH AND SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS NOT CHANGING GEARS. WHEN I WAS STOPPED TO MAKE A TURN AND BEGAN TO TURN THE CAR STALLED ON ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION AND QUIT, IT STARTED BACK AND I WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF HARMS WAY. ALTHOUGH I HAVE HAD IT AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE RECALLS AND THE PROBLEMS I DESCRIBED OVER FIVE TIMES A TOTAL OF 2 FULL MONTHS COMBINED AND WAS TOLD THE RECALL ISSUES WERE RESOLVED I PICKED IT UP ON 3/15/14 FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND DROVE IT HOME, IT DIED ON ME WHILE DRIVING, I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO THE SIDE OF THE STREET AND SAT THERE UNTIL IT STARTED AGAIN, I GOT IT HOME GOT UP TO GO TO WORK THE NEXT MORNING AND ALTHOUGH ALL LIGHTS AND ALARMS ARE WORKING IT ONLY CLICKS WHEN U TRY TO START IT. IT WILL START UP IMMEDIATELY WITH A BOOST. I HAVE NOT AND WILL NOT DRIVE IT DUE TO THE STALLING AND DYING WHILE DRIVING. I AM A PEDIATRIC HOME NURSE AND I TRANSPORT DISABLED CHILDREN SO NOT ONLY IS MY LIFE IN DANGER WITH THIS VEHICLE SO ARE THE LIVES OF THE DISABLED CHILDREN I CARE FOR DURING MY JOB. DURING THE MONTHS IT WAS IN AND OUT OF THE SHOP I MISSED SO MANY WORK DAYS I HAD TO GIVE UP MY POSITION AND START A DIFFERENT POSITION DUE TO THE LACK OF RELIABILITY OF THIS VEHICLE. I DO NOT WANT THE VEHICLE ANYMORE NOR WILL I EVER TRUST IT AGAIN! AT THIS POINT I AM PAYING OVER $600 A MONTH FOR PAYMENT AND INSURANCE ON A VEHICLE THAT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. I HAVE NEARLY A 19,000 DEBT ON THIS VEHICLE AND IT HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT A NIGHTMARE. *TR
