The contact's son owns a 2011 Jeep Compass. The contact stated while his son was exiting the parking lot and driving approximately 15-25 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently stalled and the steering wheel locked-up. The contact did not know whether there were warning lights illuminated. The contact's son was able to veer to the side of the road. The contact stated his son was able to restart the vehicle and drove to his destination. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred while driving. The contact's son was able to restart the vehicle and drove to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed that the roll over bent valve in the fuel tank was not closing properly leaking fuel into the EVAP system causing the vehicle to stall and lock the steering wheel. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA for assistance. A case was opened. The approximate failure mileage was 105,000.
JEEP STALLED AFTER FILLING IT WITH GAS. STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP, DUE TO OVERFLOW OF GAS. FIX WOULD REQUIRE REPLACING WHOLE GAS TANK AND SYSTEM.
AFTER EVERY SINGLE TIME I FUEL UP MY CAR, THE WHOLE CAR SPUTTERS. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR IN AND HAD MY OIL CHANGED AND RECEIVED A TUNE UP. LAST WEEK, AFTER HAVING ALL OF THIS WORK DONE, I GO TO FILL UP MY TANK, I TURN THE CAR ON IT SPUTTERS AS I ACCELERATE OUT OF THE GAS STATION, THEN I PULLED OUT ONTO A VERY BUSY STREET TO DRIVE HOME AND NOT EVEN A QUARTER MILE DOWN THE ROAD MY CAR STALLS OUT, POWER STEERING IS LOST, AND I ALMOST GET HIT FROM ON COMING TRAFFIC DUR TO ME LOSING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURN THE CAR BACK ON AND IT SEEMS FINE. AGAIN THIS ISSUE ONLY HAPPENS IMMEDIATELY AFTER GETTING GAS. THIS ISSUE IS APPARENTLY WELL KNOWN BUT THERE IS NO RECALL OUT YET. STALLED AFTER FILLING UP WITH GAS. THE MECHANIC WAS NOT SURE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS BUT AFTER FIXING WHAT THEY THOUGHT IT MAY BE. $500 DOLLARS LATTER. IT IS STILL STALLED AFTER I FILLED UP. VERY SCARY CROSSING 4 LANE'S OF TRAFFIC AFTER YOUR CAR STALLED, STARTS RIGHT BACK, THEN STALLED AGAIN. NOW THEY ARE TELL IT MAY BE IN THE GAS TANK. I DON'T HAVE MONEY FOR ALL THE GUESSING. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE!
VEHICLE WAS NOT ACCELERATING PROPERLY. BUCKING AND JERKING FOR THE FIRST APPROX. 500' OF ACCELERATION. VERY UNSAFE WHEN PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC. ACTED AS IF IT WERE OUT OF GAS, THEN WOULD FINALLY KICK IN. THE PROBLEM WAS REPORTED 1/22/13, AND A COMPUTER UPDATE WAS PERFORMED BY THE DEALERSHIP. THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP 1/31/13 AND THE DEALERSHIP COULDN'T FIND A PROBLEM. RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO OWNER. THE VEHICLE CONTINUOUSLY HAD THIS PROBLEM, HOWEVER, IT WAS RANDOM AND COULD NOT BE RE-CREATED BY THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP 4/5/13. A TEST DRIVE WAS PERFORMED WITH THE OWNER FOR 106 MILES, BUT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE RECREATED. THE VEHICLE KEPT RANDOMLY FAILING TO ACCELERATE. FINALLY, ON 4/11/13, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ACCELERATING PROPERLY AND THE DEALERSHIP WAS ABLE TO WITNESS THE PROBLEM. DEALERSHIP REPLACED FUEL PUMP. SO FAR THE ISSUE HAS NOT RE-OCCURRED, HOWEVER, THIS REPORT IS BEING FILED IN ORDER TO NOTIFY THE SAFETY BOARD OF POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE AND DANGER TO PUBLIC. THIS DRIVER WAS NEARLY KILLED BECAUSE OF THE VEHICLES FAILURE TO ACCELERATE IN HIGH SPEED TRAFFIC. THE DEALERSHIP'S REFUSAL TO FIND A PROBLEM WHEN "NO COMPUTER CODES" WOULD COME UP DIDN'T HELP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE ON THEIR INITIAL VISIT, BUT THE SECOND TIME THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM WAS REPLACED. THE REMEDY FAILED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM AND THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 30,000.
