CONSUMER STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AND WITHOUT WARNING FUEL TANK CRACKED, CAUSING FLUID TO LEAK OUT. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK
I TOOK MY 1999 JEEP CHEROKEE TO A JEEP DEALERSHIP TO DETERMINE A PROBLEM I WAS HAVING WITH THE GAS GAUGE FAILING TO REGISTER HOW MUCH GAS I HAD IN MY TANK. I WAS CHARGED $55.00 JUST TO DETERMINE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT I HAD A DEFECTIVE FLOTATION SENSOR IN THE GAS TANK. THE PART IS GOING TO COST $124.00, NOT INCLUDING LABOR. I EXPECT THE REPAIR BILL FOR THIS PROBLEM TO BE AT LEAST $200.00, NOT COUNTING THE $55.00 I'VE ALREADY PAID JUST TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THE JEEP HAS LESS THAN 52,000 MILES ON IT, SO I FEEL THAT THIS PROBLEM SHOULD NOT BE OCCURRING THIS SOON. I'VE ALSO FOUND OUT THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM IN LATE MODEL JEEP CHEROKEES, YET THEY HAVE NOT BEEN PUT ON A RECALL LIST (AT LEAST, MINE ISN'T ON A RECALL LIST). I CONTACTED THE JEEP (DAIMLER/CHRYSLER) HEADQUARTERS TO SEE IF THEY WOULD PAY FOR THE REPAIRS, AND THEY DECLINED. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT I FEEL I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THIS PART REPLACED, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH JEEP CHEROKEES. PLUS, THIS VEHICLE HAS TOO LOW OF A MILEAGE TO BE EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM.
WHILE DRIVING OR STARTING VEHICLE GAS GAUGE DROPS TO ZERO AND LOW FUEL LIGHT COMES ON. GAS MILEAGE COMPUTER ALSO INDICATES ZERO. CONSUMER DOES NOT KNOW HOW MUCH FUEL IS IN VEHICLE. DEALER CONTACTED. *AKJG
I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER ON THORNTON ROAD CALLED CHRYSLER AND THEY ORIGINALLY STOPPED THE CAR FROM SAYING IT HAD NO GAS ON A FULL TANK AND READING 0MPH WHEN TRAVELING 75 MPH. THEN MONTHS LATER THE CAR BEGAN TO READ 0 GAS AFTER I FILLED UP THE TANK. THE GAS READING IS ALWAYS WRONG.

AFTER HAVING THE GAS TANK REPLACED IN MID JULY OF 1999, I NOTICED AFTER DRIVING FOR OVER 100 MILES, THE GAS NEEDLE ON THE DASH WOULD NOT MOVE OFF OF FULL. WHEN I CHECKED THE OVERHEAD COMPUTER TO DETERMINE HOW MANY MILES I HAD UNTIL EMPTY, IT STILL SHOWED THE MAXIMUM. THE PROBLEM WAS REPORTED TO THE DEALERSHIP IN JACKSONVILLE AND WAS SUPPOSEDLY TAKEN CARE OF. LAST NIGHT, MY WIFE AND 14 MONTH OLD CHILD WERE DRIVING DOWN I-10 AND WITH A 1/4 TANK STILL SHOWING, THE CAR JUST QUIT. IT HAD APPARENTLY RAN OUT OF GAS. MY WIFE HAD TO GET SOMEONE TO TAKE HER TO A GAS STATION AND GET SOME GAS. AFTER FILLING UP, THE SAME PROBLEM APPEARED AS BEFORE. MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE OVER 100 MILES AGAIN WITHOUT THE GAS NEEDLE MOVING OFF OF THE FULL POSITION. THE DAY BEFORE, MY WIFE HAD ONLY DRIVEN ABOUT 150 MILES BEFORE THE CAR NEEDED TO BE FILLED UP AGAIN. I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT THAT IS BEING SERVICED FOR THE 3RD TIME NOW.
