While driving the vehicle at approx 10 mph the coil spring on the front driver side strut broke causing the spring to slide down over the strut and immediately hit the tire causing noise and vibration. Unable to drive and had to be towed. Hyundai dealer diagnosed problem, admitted it's a common problem with sonatas and cost to repair $1,300.
My vehicle has seven recalls on Kelley blue book online everything it says on the Honda website is what’s happening with my car the check check engine light on smoking at the tail pipe exhaust smoke excessive leaking oil suspension seatbelt and no one is helping me at the local dealership Hyundai dealership they’ve been putting me off for months this is a very dangerous situation to have my children in the car I cannot work due to this situationI am a driver for Uber etc.
EVERY TIME I GO TO START MY CAR IT GIVES ME A WARNING TO CHECK BRAKES. I READ ONLINE THAT MANY HYUNDAI OWNERS ARE HAVING SIMILAR ISSUES. THIS WARNING KEEPS THE ENGINE FROM STARTING. ALONG WITH THIS, THERE ARE ALSO ISSUES WITH THE STEERING COLUMN AND SUSPENSION.
WHILE PARKED AT THE AIRPORT FOR 2 WEEKS, THE RIGHT FRONT SUSPENSION COIL BROKE. I NOTICED THE PROBLEM WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO LEAVE THE PARKING LOT AND HEARD A HORRENDOUS METAL SCRAPING NOISE. UPON STOPPING THE CAR AND INSPECTING, I COULD SEE THE COIL SPRING HANGING DOWN. IT SCRAPED UP THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE IN JUST THE SHORT TIME TO DRIVE ACROSS THE PARKING LOT TO WHERE THERE WAS MORE LIGHT.
MY LIGHTS HAVE BEEN CONTINUALLY BLOWING FOR WELL OVER A YEAR ALMOST 2.EVERY 2 OR SO MONTHS I VE HAD TO REPLACE THEM.DEALER SAID THEY COULDNT DO ANYTHING IM STILL REPLACING BULBS.TJE CONTROL ARM ON THE PASSENGER SIDE GABE ME PROBLEMS .WAS TLOD WARRANTY WAS OUT JAD TO PAY FOR REPAIRS.WAS DRIVI.G THE CAR IT JUST QYOT ON ME AND STARTED SMOKING .WOULD NOT CRANK.TOOK TO AUTO SHOP SAID IT WAS HJE MOTOR

MOST OF THE COMPLAINTS DESCRIBE IS THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENING TO MY VEHICLE ENGINE REPAIR 2 TIMES .BREAK LIGHTS BURNED REPLACED BY AUTO ZONE LOWER CONTROL ARM AND TIRE ROD IN OUTER REPLACED IT IS SO STRESSFUL HARD TO EVEN TALK ABOUT .
TOOK MY CAR INTO JIM CLICK HYUNDAI DEALER..FIXED RACK AND PINION COVERED UNDER RECALL AND THEY SAID THEY TEST DROVE, AND FOUND NO ISSUES REGARDING A BAD RIDE ON THE ROAD..I AM BEGINNING TO THINK THEY ARE LYING AND HAVEN'T CHECKED A FULL SUSPENSION CHECK AND MAY NOT HAVE DONE A THROUGH TEST DRIVE..IT SHOULD RIDE NICE INSTEAD OF A BAD RIDE WITH BUMPING AND THUMPING SOUNDS UNDER THE CAR..THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME A DEALERSHIP MECHANIC TECHNICIAN COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WHEN THERE CLEARLY IS!!!
THE LEFT, FRONT SPRING ON MY 2013 HYUNDAI SONATA TURBO BROKE DURING NORMAL DRIVING AND PUNCTURED THE TIRE. A SIMILAR EVENT ON THE HYUNDAI SANTA FE HAS TRIGGERED A RECALL, SO IT SEEMS LIKELY THAT THE TWO VEHICLES MAY HAVE THE SAME DEFECT. I SUSPECT THAT THE TWO MODELS HAVE SIMILAR SUSPENSION DESIGN, SINCE THE SONATA TURBO MODEL HAS STIFFER SUSPENSION. I BELIEVE THAT HYUNDAI MAY HAVE SIMPLY USED THE SANTA FE'S SPRING, RATHER THAN CREATING A NEW DESIGN. THIS MULTIPLE USAGE OF PARTS IS COMMON IN THE AUTO INDUSTRY, AND MAKES SENSE AS A COST-SAVING MEASURE. THEREFORE, I THINK THE HYUNDAI SONATA MAY NEED A RECALL FOR THEIR FRONT SPRINGS ON THE SONATA TURBO MODEL. THE TURBO IS NOT A VERY COMMON MODEL, SO THERE MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN A LARGE NUMBER OF THESE FAILURES.
I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM HYUNDAI EXTENDING THE WARRANTY FOR THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS FOR 2011-2014 SONATAS AS WELL AS 2012-2016 ELANTRAS; NOTE THEY DID NOT REFER TO IT AS A "RECALL" AND THERE IS NO DATE ON THE LETTER. I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO FILE A CLAIM IF I HAD ALREADY REPAIRED MY VEHICLE. I SUBMITTED THE DOCUMENT PER THEIR WEBSITE AND SINCE THEN THEY HAVE REPEATEDLY REQUESTED ADDITIONAL INFORMATION TO DELAY PAYMENT FOR A "KNOWN DEFECTIVE ITEM". INITIAL DOCUMENT SUBMITTED "PAID IN FULL" INVOICE SHOWING MILEAGE OF 39,623 AT TIME OF REPAIR. ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED; COPY OF BANK STATEMENT & FRONT OF CHECK SHOWING PAYMENT CLEARED AND CURRENT MILEAGE 6 MONTHS LATER. THEY ALSO WANTED PROOF OF REGISTRATION WHICH IS NOT RELEVANT. TODAY 6/20/19 THEY REQUESTED I PROVIDE A COPY OF THE "BACK OF THE CHECK" AGAIN WHICH IS NOT RELEVANT WITH THE DOCUMENTS I HAVE PROVIDED. THIS IS A DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO AVOID THEIR RESPONSIBILITY FOR A "KNOWN DEFECT". HOW MANY OTHER CONSUMERS ARE BEING FORCED TO JUMP THROUH HOOPS AND HOW MANY HAVE MADE THE REPAIRS AND NO LONGER OWN THEIR VEHICLES AND NOT BEING REIMBURSED FOR PAID REPAIRS. HOW MANY CRASHES OCCURRED AS A RESULT OF A BROKEN SPRING OR TIRES DESTROYED? WHAT ABOUT PERSONAL INJURIES? I BELIEVE THE NTSB SHOULD REQUEST SPECIFICS FROM HYUNDAI AND FEEL FREE TO USE MY NAME. RIGHT FRONT SUSPENSION SPRING BROKE AND CAUSED A BLOW OUT OF THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE, AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE CAR HAD ABOUT 40,000 MILES ON IT
DISCOVERED THE L/F SPRING HAD BROKEN DURING REGULAR SERVICE. HAD TO HAVE IT REPLACED. CONTACTED HYUNDAI ASKED IF THERE WAS A POSSIBLE RECALL AND WAS TOLD NOT FOR MY MAKE OR MODEL OR YEAR, BUT DID DISCOVER THE 2011'S HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS & A RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. I FEEL THERE SHOULD ALSO BE A RECALL FOR THE 2013'S SINCE BOTH CARS USE THE SAME SPRINGS.
I HAD TO REPLACE THE CV JOINT ON ONE SIDE OF THE CAR AND THEN MONTHS LATER THE OTHER SIDE. I WAS TOLD BY MY BODY SHOP THAT THIS WAS HAPPENING WITH ALOT OF THE HYUNDAI SONATAS. ALSO, I HAVE REPLACED LIGHT BULBS BLOWING MONTHLY IN MY CAR AND ONE HA ACTUALLY BURNED. I HAVE ALSO FOUND OUT THAT SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THIS AS WELL.
SUMMER OF 2018 I COMPLAINED TO CARMAX ABOUT ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS TO CHECK. MY HORN UNEXPECTEDLY WILL NOT WORK, MY MONITOR STOPPED WORKING AND WAS REPLACED (OCT 2018) BUT NOW IT BLINKS OFF AND ON, AND I WOULD REPLACE MY EXTERIOR LIGHTS ALMOST EVERY 2-3 MONTHS. RECENTLY (NOV 2018) I WAS TOLD MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE OUT SO I WENT TO REPLACE THEM AT AUTOZONE AND WAS TOLD MY LIGHT CASES ARE MELTED AS WELL AS THE BULB HOLDER IS BURNT. I HAVE ONLY HAD THIS CAR FOR 1 YEAR AND 10 MONTHS. SINCE PURCHASING THIS CAR I HAVE REPLACED MY CV JOINTS 4 TIMES, HAD A NEW MONITOR PUT IN THE CAR, NEW ENGINE AND OTHER RECALLS COMPLETED ON THIS CAR. I FEEL IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE MANUFACTURER COMPLETELY RECALL THIS MODEL YEAR FOR SAFETY REASONS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS UNDERGOING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE COIL SPRING FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,209.
DRIVERS SIDE COIL SPRING BROKE FROM CORROSION. SEE PHOTO NOTICED AT 43,600 MILES, NOT SURE HOW LONG IT WAS BROKEN.

THE COIL SPRING ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE STRUT BROKE CAUSING THE SPRING TO SLIDE DOWN OVER THE STRUT AND IMMEDIATELY STRIKING THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT TIRE WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED 55MPH. THE FRONT TIRE WAS CUT COMPLETELY OFF OF THE WHEEL ON THE INSIDE MAKING STEERING VERY DIFFICULT.
DRIVER SIDE COIL SPRING RUSTED THROUGH AND BROKE AND MUST BE REPLACED AS WELL AS THE OTHER SIDE FOR SAFETY SAKE.
FRONT PASSENGER SIDE COIL SPRING BROKE, BUT LUCKILY DIDN'T PUNCTURE THE TIRE. LOCAL STREET, WHILE DRIVING.
WHILE PURCHASING NEW TIRES, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE LEFT FRONT SPRING ON MY DAUGHTER'S 2013 HYUNDAI SONATA (ONLY 43,000 MILES) WAS BROKEN. DRIVING UNDER THIS CONDITION COULD HAVE CAUSED LOSS OF CONTROL AND A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF THE SPRING HAD MOVED AND PUNCTURED THE TIRE. MY DAUGHTER SAID SHE OCCASIONALLY WOULD HEAR A RATTLE AT THE FRONT WHEEL-WELL WHILE DRIVING PRIOR TO THE BREAK BEING IDENTIFIED. I DROVE THE CAR AND FOUND THE RATTLING NOISE TO BE CONTINUOUS ON SMALL ROAD DEFECTS/BUMPS ON THE WAY TO THE REPAIR SHOP. SUSPENSION SPRINGS SHOULD NORMALLY LAST THE LIFE OF THE CAR. THE CAR WAS AT THE SHOP FOR FOUR DAYS AWAITING A HYUNDAI DEALER TO GET THE PART BACK IN STOCK, FORCING MY DAUGHTER TO GET A RENTAL CAR. THE REPLACEMENT HYUNDAI PART NUMBER IS 54630 3Q114. A LIMITED RECALL WAS ISSUED SEVERAL YEARS AGO FOR 2011 SONATA'S WITH THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM. A GOOGLE SEARCH SHOWS THAT NUMEROUS OTHER SONATA OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS EXACT PROBLEM SINCE THAT RECALL BUT SO FAR IT HAS NOT BEEN EXPANDED. THE PROBLEM IS APPARENTLY MORE PREVALENT IN NORTHERN CLIMATES WHERE SALT IS USED FOR SNOW/ICE REMOVAL CAUSING CORROSION IN THE SPRINGS. HYUNDAI NEEDS TO COME UP WITH A PERMANENT FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM AND ISSUE AN EXPANDED RECALL FOR ALL SONATA'S.
WHILE PULLING INTO A BUSY INTERSECTION MY CAR DECIDED TO DIVE OUT. THE WARNING SIGN 'HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING /PULL OVER SAFELY AND STOP DRIVING' 'CHECK POWER CHARGING' CAME ON AND MY CAR CAME TO A HALT. I WAS PRESSING THE GAS BUT COULDN'T ACCELERATE ONLY CRUISE OVER TO A PARKING LOT. THAT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS HAD I BEEN ON THE INTERSTATE AND COULD HAVE CAUSED A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT FOR A CAR TO ALL OF A SUDDEN SLOW DOWN AND STOP. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE COIL SPRING WAS FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE PART FOR THE REPAIR WAS BEING ORDERED AND THE VEHICLE WAS STILL ABLE TO BE DRIVEN. SIX DAYS LATER, WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH A SUDDEN LOUD CRUNCH NOISE OCCURRED AND THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE DROPPED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE COIL SPRING HAD DETACHED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OPENED A CASE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 102,000. UPDATED 06/02/17*LJ *CN
COIL SPRINGS. WE LIVE IN A COLD CLIMATE STATE AND OUR CONCERNED THAT OUR COIL SPRINGS MIGHT BE DEFECTIVE OR CORRODED LIKE THE SPRING PROBLEMS IN THE 2011 SONATA MODELS. WE OWN THE 2013 SE SONATA MODEL WHICH ONE WOULD THINK HAS A BETTER SUSPENSION THAN THE STANDARD MODEL, APPARENTLY THAT IS NOT THE CASE. AFTER A FLAT TIRE ON A PAVED COUNTY HIGHWAY (CAR IN MOTION AT 45MPH) ON MARCH 6, 2017 WE FOUND OUT THAT BOTH FRONT SPRINGS HAD TO BE REPLACED AFTER NORMAL DRIVING (70K MILEAGE). DEALERSHIP TOLD US PASSENGER FRONT SPRING BREAKING LIKELY CAUSED OUR FLAT TIRE AND ONCE IN THE SHOP, THEY DISCOVERED OTHER SPRING WAS CRACKED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AS WELL. WE HAD NOT ENCOUNTERED ANY MAJOR ROAD HAZARDS WHEN THE FLAT TIRE OCCURRED. CAR WAS MORE NOISY AFTER LAST SERVICE AT DEALERSHIP DECEMBER 27, 2016. SERVICE INCLUDED OIL CHANGE, TIRE ROTATION AND A REQUIRED UNDER BODY CORROSION TREATMENT. OUR RIDE SOUNDED MORE NOISY LIKE WHEN SNOW TIRES ARE PLACED ON A VEHICLE, DEALERSHIP AND MYSELF THOUGHT IT WAS JUST FROM THE RECENT TIRE ROTATION, BUT THE NOISE LASTED UNTIL THE FLAT TIRE INCIDENT WHICH OCCURRED WITH A RUMBLE LIKE SOUND FROM THE TIRE AREA AND A SUDDEN LOSS OF AIR NOISE FROM THE TIRE AREA, IT SOUNDED LIKE RELEASING AIR FROM AN AIR HOSE. DEALER REP MENTIONED HE'S SEEN THOUSANDS OF REPAIRS, BUT ONLY A FEW SPRING PROBLEMS WITH SONATAS AND ONLY 1 OTHER TIME IT INVOLVED A SONATA WITH 2 BROKEN COIL SPRINGS AND IN THAT CASE A DRIVER WENT OVER VERY SEVERE, ROUGH RAILROAD TRACKS WHEN THE SPRINGS FAILED, WE NEVER ENCOUNTERED A "BOTTOMING OUT" NOR ANY HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITIONS PRIOR TO THE SPRINGS FAILING.
WHILE DRIVING, THE FRONT COIL SPRING FRACTURED, WHICH RESULTED IN THE BROKEN COIL PUNCTURING THE TIRE. THIS OCCURRED ON A WINDING COUNTRY ROAD AROUND A HAIRPIN TURN AT 6PM IN THE EVENING. HOWARD COUNTY POLICE WERE CALLED UNTIL A TOW TRUCK ARRIVED DUE TO THE DANGER PRESENTED BY THE ROAD. AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIANS CONFIRMED THIS WAS THE CAUSE OF THE DAMAGED TIRE. THERE WAS A PREVIOUS RECALL ON 2011 HYUNDAI SONATAS AND ELANTRAS FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM (RECALL 15V629000). *TR
VEHICLE HAS 70000 MILES. BOTH FRONT COIL SPRINGS ARE BROKEN DUE TO CORROSION. FOUND ON INSPECTION AT DEALERSHIP. VERY PREMATURE FAILURE . IF NOT FOUND COULD HAVE LED TO TIRE PUNCTURE AND POSSIBLE ACCIDENT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2013 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY AT 70 MPH, THE SWING ARM FRACTURED AND DETACHED. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND CRASHED INTO A MEDIAN STRIP. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000. UPDATE 01/13/16 MA UPDATED 5/23/18*JB
NOTICED THAT FRONT TIRES WERE WEARING UNEVENLY. BECAUSE OF VEHICLE MILEAGE AND FACT THAT I KEEP TIRE PRESSURE IN ACCORDANCE WITH RECOMMENDED SPECS I CONTACTED HYUNDAI. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE AREA RESPONDED THAT I WAS OUTSIDE THE WARRANTY PERIOD FOR WHEEL ALIGNMENT AND DID RECONSIDER WHEN I RAISED THE MILEAGE ISSUE AS WELL AS MY ATTENTION TO TIRE PRESSURE. HOWEVER, THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE COST. ON 9/11/2014, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO OUR LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND THEY ALIGNED AND BALANCED ALL TIRES AS WELL AS RESET THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR. THE TOTAL COST WAS $218.75 PLUS TAX. I KNOW THAT ALIGNMENT ISSUES CAN BE CAUSED BY POT HOLES AND THE LIKE, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED LIKE THAT TO CAUSE MISALIGNMENT. GIVEN THE MILEAGE AND THE OTHER RATIONALE STATED HERE, I CAN ONLY CONCLUDE THAT 1): THE VEHICLE WAS NOT PROPERLY ALIGNED AT THE MANUFACTURER; OR 2) THE TIRES WERE NOT BALANCED PROPERLY; OR 3) THE TIRES USED BY THE MANUFACTURER ARE DEFECTIVE. OF COURSE, THERE IS ALWAYS THE POSSIBILITY THAT ALL OF THE PRIOR THREE FACTORS PLAYED A ROLE IN THIS PREMATURE/UNUSUAL TIRE WEAR. *TR
2013 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS CONSUMER IS EXPERIENCING NOISES COMING FROM TIRES *CN THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THERE WAS AN DESIGN ISSUE. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE FLAT SPOTS COULD REACH A POINT WHERE THE TIRES WOULD BECOME SUSCEPTIBLE TO BLOWING UP AND CAUSING SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE. I JUST PURCHASED A 2013 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CAR TENDS TO WANDER ON THE HIGHWAY MOSTLY LEFT BUT SOMETIMES RIGHT. IT WILL NOT STAY STRAIGHT. I HAVE ALREADY BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALER TWICE AND THEY TELL ME THAT IT IS WITHIN SPEC. AT FIRST THEY TRIED TO TELL ME THAT IT WAS BECAUSE I WAS NOT USED TO ELECTRIC STEERING. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. I HAVE TEST DRIVEN OTHER VEHICLES WITH THIS TYPE OF STEERING THAT DO NOT EXHIBIT WANDERING ON THE HIGHWAY. I FOUND OUT BELATEDLY THAT THIS PROBLEM WAS MUCH WORSE IN THE 2011 AND 2012 MODEL YEARS AND THAT THEY IMPLEMENTED A FIX. WELL THE FIX DOESN'T WORK. IN ADDITION WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A SLOW SPEED THE CAR WILL PULL LEFT. THE DEALER HAS REFERRED ME TO HYUNDAI CORPORATE WHERE I HAVE OPENED A CASE NUMBER. THEY NOW TELL ME THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO SINCE THE DEALER SAYS IT IS OPERATING IN SPEC. *TR
