RECALLCampaign #20V121000

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata vehicles. The low pressure fuel hose that connects the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump may crack over time due to heat generated within the engine compartment.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the low-pressure fuel hose for damage or leaking, replacing it as necessary. If no damage or leaking is found, heat-protective tape will be installed. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began August 10, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 189. This recall has been replaced by NHTSA recall number 22V-314.

Your car may develop a fuel odor while driving due to a leak in the high-pressure fuel pipe. You might notice the smell before any warning lights appear on your dashboard. The high-pressure fuel pipe can fail and will need to be replaced by a mechanic to stop the leak.

You noticed a gas smell starting on the 20th that got significantly worse by the 21st. When you took your car to the dealership, they identified the problem as a failing high-pressure fuel line connected to the fuel pump. The dealership indicated this issue is not covered under the previous engine replacement recall. Replacing the high-pressure fuel line and fuel pump connections will likely be needed to resolve the smell and ensure proper fuel system operation.

My vehicle had Hyundai Safety Recall 227 (fuel tube replacement) completed on December 7, 2022. After the recall repair, the same fuel-system symptoms returned. A Hyundai dealership diagnosed failure of the high-pressure fuel pump and high-pressure fuel pipe and stated the condition was critical and a safety risk due to fuel system involvement and potential fire hazard. Hyundai Motor America declined assistance, citing vehicle age and mileage, despite this being a recurring fuel-system safety issue following a recall repair. The vehicle continues to present fuel-related safety concerns, and operating the vehicle poses a potential fire risk. In addition, the estimated repair cost exceeds $2,000, which represents a significant financial hardship for a safety-related defect that occurred after a recall repair. I am submitting this complaint due to concern for vehicle safety and the recurrence of a fuel-system defect after a manufacturer safety recall.

See attached document for complaint. I am reporting a safety incident involving my 2013 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.0T (VIN# [XXX] ), which was subject to an open recall at the time of sale. On XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, the vehicle stalled and caught fire within minutes. It was declared a total loss. Two elderly passengers were in the car; one suffered breathing issues due to smoke inhalation. NHTSA records show Recall 22V312000 / Hyundai Recall #227 was issued August 31, 2022, for a defective low-pressure fuel hose that can leak and cause fires. The remedy was available before I purchased the car on April 11, 2025, but was never performed by the selling dealer, Auto Express of [XXX] . I request NHTSA investigate: 1.Why the recall was not performed prior to resale; 2.Whether Hyundai and its dealers are meeting notification and repair obligations; 3.Whether enforcement action is warranted. The vehicle has begun to vibrate/shake badly but manageable. When a code reader was connected to the vehicle both codes 7E9 and 7E8 showed up. Upon researching, information has been found that these specific vehicles have been known for recalls due to fuel hose issues. If I continue to drive this vehicle without the issues being resolved which is not my fault, I jeopardize my son and I’s lives as well as any potential future passengers.

My low pressure fuel hose has a leak. The amount of gasoline that is spraying on my spark plugs and engine is concerning. The gas fume smell coming in through the vent was horrible. After finding this leak I came to the conclusion that I am very lucky My car didn’t catch fire while I was driving. For some reason there is already a recall in place that includes my vehicle year but does not include my vehicle Vin. How do I get my vehicle included in this recall so that it can get repaired? The recall in question is NHTSA number 227 or 22V – 314. At this time, the car is sitting in my driveway and I am not inclined to move it until I know it can get repaired. At that time, I will have it towed to the dealership.

I have owned my car about a year. There were no problems from the beginning but just a few days ago I was waiting in my car and turned the heater on. The strong smell of fuel came through the vents I immediately shut off the vents and took the car home and did not drive it for a few days. After a inspection from myself to see if I could find the issue nothing was found and so I took the car into a shop to have them inspect it. They quickly found that the metal high pressure fuel line was leaking at the connection to the fuel pump. They said I was lucky that the car had not caught on fire during the drive to the shop as the leak was right near the spark plugs and the fuel vapors were very strong. They tried to reestablish the seal and the leak is worse now. The car is undrivable and I will have to replace either the fuel line and/or the fuel pump.

The low pressure side fuel line on the vehicle has cracked and has a hole in it. Just above the back of the engine. Hyundai has issue a recall on this EXACT problem mid last year. However they say there is no open recall for my vehicle. This tells me Hyundai is NOT being honest about the amount of vehicles this has affected. When trying to reach Hyundai about this issue I simply get told there is not a recall for my specific vehicle. Vehicle stalls while driving and is very hard to start up after fueling. This is an extremely unsafe vehicle do to the strong possibility of fuel leaking on to the engine or exhaust while running. I find it completely irresponsible of Hyundai to potentially put someone’s life at risk by not including ALL vehicles of the model any year in their recall related to this problem. There was no warning of this issue other than the vehicle stalling or running rough at stops and not starting correctly after refueling. I have pictures to prove the issue. Please look into this matter seriously and hold Hyundai accountable for RECALLING all vehicles with this potential problem. Hyundai appears to be excluding or not being honest about the amount of vehicles that need to be fixed in their recall. Vehicle can catch fire and people can lose their lives cause of this negligence.

I smelled gasoline in my car every time the car was idle and when I turned on the AC. I googled everything I could but could not figure out the problem. I had to drive the car from Miami to Orlando while this issue was going on (due to me attending school in Miami and living in Orlando). I dropped it to Tire Plus the same day I arrived in ORL & they called me on Sunday morning, stating that I should not be driving the car, it is a hazard because of the issue they identified. Shortly after (about 10 min after that phone call from Tire Plus) I found out that there has been a recall for this same issue tire Plus identified. I called tire plus and told them it is a recall and they said I must get the car to Hyundai to be fixed since it is identified as a recall. I went on Hyundais website and typed in the VIN number and I saw that my car qualifies for the recall. I got the car towed to Hyundai the next day. I called corporate, corporate notified me that after about 4 days of my car being in Hyundai’s care I’d be able to get a loaner (previously, I called numerous Hyundai’s but went with the one who had loaners available). It has been 7 days and Iam without a vehicle and I travel to school on the weekends. My case was escalated (last Wednesday I believe) and we were told by the case manager that he was going to reach out to Hyundai then give us a call… he gave us a call but did not reach out to Hyundai. He was also supposed to give us a call today (Monday) but it’s 3PM, I haven’t heard anything. So, I called him and left a message since he did not answer. Not to mention that Hyundai had no remedy for the recall on the car. It seems like they have no interest in compensating me in any way. They would rather drag out the situation and mention the need for me to fix other things on the car, other than the hazard at hand (the recall). It is quite frustrating and I’m not sure what to do at this point.

I am writing to report a safety concern and recall issue with Hyundai Motors . October 2021 - I took my car into Braman Hyundai 2060 NE 2nd Avenue Miami FL 33137 305-571-1225 for a few issues including the following recall : 189 HYUNDAI SONATA 2013: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS. April 26th 2022- I notice a strong smell of gasoline inside my car. April 27th 2022 - I bring my car into Braman Hyundai 2060 NE 2nd Avenue Miami FL 33137 305-571-1225. I am notified by the dealership there if a fuel leak and it will cost me $700 out of pocket . I clarify with the customer care representative : “The issue that is present now in regards to a gas fuel leak , is the SAME issue as the recall?” The representative confirms this is correct , and advises me to contact corporate directly as they cannot perform a recall twice . There is a chance the recall can be covered if corporate overrides this with her manager . I proceed to call and report my issue to corporate . Corporate and the dealership refused to assume responsibility for the repairs and failed to provide paperwork for initial recall . I am deeply disappointed and do not feel safe or comfortable driving my car anymore after a gas leak was present that was failed to be addressed back in October 2021 under the existing recall . I hate to imagine my life being put at risk in accident or death because of a serious fire risk . My occupation requires me to drive for a living , and I take my safety and the safety of others on the road very seriously . This is a Hyundai Motors manufacturer issue , but because of some strange recall technicality and the initial work not being done properly , I am being held responsible for the repairs in addition to my life being put as risk . Due to this experience , I will not be returning to this dealership and refuse to make any further business or recommendation for Hyundai Motors as a trusted vehicle source.

I have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata, with a build date of November 15, 2012. There is a NHTSA campaign, number 20V121000, that corresponds with Hyundai recall 189. The recall describes a fuel leak on the top of the engine, as well as "increasing the risk of engine compartment fire". My vehicle is currently experiencing the exact issue stated in the recall. According to the part 573 safety recall report 20V-121, the affected vehicles were produced at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama with the production dates of November 26, 2012 - January 16, 2014, meaning I missed the "cut off" by 11 days. With that being said, local Hyundai dealerships and Hyundai cooperate with not perform the recall nor will the allow me to purchase the affected part so I can make the repair myself. In the mean time I am stuck with a vehicle that is leaking fuel onto the top of my engine, and fumes filling the cabin of my vehicle.

I HAVE CONTACTED HYUNDAI OF AMERICA CORPORATE OFFICES AS WELL AS THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR. NEITHER COULD GIVE ME ANY ANSWERS AS TO WHEN THIS ISSUE COULD BE ADDRESSED??? ALL I WAS TOLD IS THAT IF I HAVE AN ISSUE WITH MY VEHICLE THAT CONCERNS CAMPAIGN 189... LATE APRIL NOTICED GAS ODOR COMING FROM CAR AFTER TURNING IT OFF. HYUNDAI WEBSITE INDICATED RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE - CAMPAIGN 189. CONTACTED HYUNDAI TO FIND OUT HOW TO GET FIXED. THIS IN PART THEIR RESPONSE: OUR RECORDS INDICATE THAT YOUR VEHICLE IS NOT AFFECTED BY CAMPAIGN 189. MADE APPOINTMENT WITH REGULAR ASE-CERTIFIED MASTER TECHNICIAN. HE IDENTIFIED THE FUEL LEAK AND NOTED ON INVOICE: ACTIVE FUEL LEAK PRESENT, ABOVE FUEL TANK, PROBABLE CRACKED FUEL PUMP MODULE. IF SO PUMP REPLACEMENT ESTIMATE IS $750 (HYUNDAI PUMP/SEAL, LABOR, TAX). FUEL LEAK IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE, FIRE HAZARD, RAW FUEL JUST LOOKING FOR AN IGNITION SOURCE. I NOTIFIED HYUNDAI OF CONFIRMED DEFECT. THIS IS IN PART THEIR RESPONSE: WE ARE SORRY TO HEAR THAT YOU STILL HAVE CONCERNS REGARDING YOUR 2013 HYUNDAI SONATA AND THAT FROM THE INFORMATION YOU RECEIVED FROM AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR FACILITY. HOWEVER, BASED UPON THE INFORMATION YOU PROVIDED, WE RECOMMEND YOU SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF YOUR LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TO HAVE YOUR 2013 SONATA INSPECTED AND DIAGNOSED. AS THE ATTACHED REPAIR ORDER YOU SENT IN DOES NOT SHOW THAT THE DIAGNOSTICS WHERE FROM A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE, HOWEVER, HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE CENTER IS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE OVER THE PHONE OR THROUGH EMAIL. OUR DEALERSHIPS ARE ALSO THE BEST-TRAINED AND MOST-QUALIFIED TO SERVICE AND MAINTAIN YOUR HYUNDAI VEHICLE. ONLY AUTHORIZED HYUNDAI DEALERSHIPS CAN DETERMINE WHETHER THE REPAIR IN QUESTION WOULD BE COVERED BY BOTH WARRANTY AND/OR CAMPAIGNS OFFERED BY HYUNDAI THAT ARE VIN SPECIFIC. PLEASE NOTE THAT EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA WILL NO LONGER CONSIDER ANY GOODWILL FOR ANY INDEPENDENT REPAIR FACILITY REPAIRS REGARDLESS OF THE SITUATION. HELLO. MY CAR STARTED TO GET A VERY STRONG GAS SMELL COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT SO I MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THEM CHECK IT. THE DAY OF MY APPOINTMENT I COULD BARELY BREATH BECAUSE THE SMALL OF GAS WAS SO STRONG. I OPENED UP THE HOOD AND I SAW GAS SPILLING ALL OVER MY ENGINE. I COULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT I WAS LOOKING AT. IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING MY CAR WOULD HAVE CAUGHT FIRE. THE MAIN GAS LINE FROM THE TANK WAS LEAKING MOST OF THE GAS OVER THE ENGINE. THE REPAIR WAS OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS. I THINK HYUNDAI SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. THESE DEFECTIVE GAS LINES ARE THE REASON WHY SO MANY OF THESE CARS ARE CATCHING FIRE.

I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET AND ALL OF A SUDDEN WITH NO PRIOR WARNING AT ALL, SEVERAL LIGHTS POPPED UP ON MY DASH ALERTING ME OF AN ISSUE AND MY CAR JUST SHUT COMPLETELY DOWN. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER CONCERNED IT MAY BE DUE TO THE ENGINE RECALL. I HAD NO ISSUES WITH THE CAR AND NEVER HAD ANY INDICATOR LIGHTS ON THE DASH LIGHT UP AT ALL EVER. IT TURNED OUT MY FUEL IN TANK PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I AM STILL SHOCKED THAT THIS HAPPENED WITH A 2013 MODEL CAR. I AM VERY CURIOUS IF THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE. I HAD A TOYOTA CAMRY 2002 FOR MANY YEARS AND OTHER OLDER MODEL CARS AND NEVER HAD TO REPLACE A FUEL IN TANK PUMP. I WAS QUOTED $750+ TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP. BUT THIS COULD'VE HAVE BEEN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR MYSELF AND OTHERS, IF I HAD TRAFFIC BEHIND ME AND IN FRONT OF ME. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THIS PRECISE THING HAS HAPPENED. THE EARLIER INCIDENT OCCURRED IN NOVEMBER, 2013, AND, THANKFULLY, EACH INCIDENT DID NOT INVOLVE HITTING A PEDESTRIAN. FORTUNATELY, THE RATE OF SPEED WAS VERY LOW, AS WELL, SO DAMAGE TO VEHICLES WAS SMALL. THESE INCIDENTS ALARMED ME FOR I COULDN'T HELP BUT THINK WHAT THE CONSEQUENCES COULD HAVE BEEN HAD I BEEN AT A RAILROAD CROSSING, APPROACHING A SCHOOL BUS DISCHARGING CHILDREN, ETC.. I TOOK THE CAR TO RICK CASE HYUNDAI IN PLANTATION, FLORIDA, TO HAVE THE CAR CHECKED OUT AND THEY SAID THEY FOUND NO PROBLEMS.
