ON APRIL 5, 2021 AT ABOUT 7AM. I WAS DRIVING MY DAUGHTER'S 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA LIMITED EDITION WITH A PANORAMA SUNROOF TO A CASINO CALL CACHE CREEK CASINO IN CALIFORNIA. I WAS DRIVING AND SHE WAS THE PASSENGER THAT MORNING. I WAS GOING AROUND 70 MPH ON INTERSTATE 80, EASTBOUND WHEN ALL OF SUDDEN THE CENTER SUNROOF EXPLODED AND GLASS FLEW EVERYWHERE. IT SOUNDED LIKE SOMEONE SHOT A GUN AT US AND WE ALMOST LOST CONTROL AND BARELY AVOIDED A MAJOR COLLISION WITH THE VEHICLE IN NEXT TO US. WE PULLED OF THE NEXT EXIT IN HERCULES,CA. TO THE FIRST GAS STATION WE SAW. I CALL THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL SO THEY COULD COME AND MAKE OUT A REPORT. IT REALLY SCARED US ,BECAUSE IT SOUNDED LIKE SOMEONE SHOT AT US WITH A SHOTGUN. ,,,,,,,,,,,
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 60, 65 MPH. HEARD A LOUD NOISE THAT STARTLED ME, THEN SAW BROKEN GLASS FALLING DOWN MY WINDSHIELD. PULLED OVER, AND OBSERVED THAT THE SUNROOF SHATTERED. I CALLED THE POLICE. THE GA STATE TROOPER FILED A REPORT (C000392882). HE ALSO TOOK TWO PICTURES OF THE SUNROOF WITH MY PHONE BECAUSE EACH TIME I SHUT MY CAR DOOR, THE GLASS CONTINUED TO SHATTER AND FALL MORE. I TOOK AN ADDITIONAL PICTURE AT A GAS STATION, WHERE I PULLED OVER TO REMOVE SOME OF THE SHATTERED GLASS FROM THE FABRIC AT THE TOP OF MY CAR. IT BEGAN TO ENTER MY VEHICLE AFTER LEAVING THE SCENE. MY INSURANCE COMPANY CLAIMED THE DAMAGE WAS LOWER THAN MY $500 DEDUCTIBLE, AND HYUNDAI WOULDN'T COVER IT UNDER MY WARRANTY. HYUNDAI CLAIMED THAT SOMETHING MUST HAVE HIT THE GLASS, AND THAT MY INSURANCE COMPANY IS LIABLE, NOT THEM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER THE FRONT AND REAR PASSENGER DOORS WERE CLOSED, THE REAR WINDOW SHATTERED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000.
WHILE VISITING MY PARENTS, MY FATHER POINTED OUT THAT PART OF MY SUNROOF WAS SHATTERED. I DID NOT BELIEVE HIM AS I HAD NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN ANY SORT OF COLLISION NOR HAD I HEARD ANYTHING HIT MY CAR WHILE DRIVING. UPON INSPECTION I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE THAT INDEED A PIECE OF MY SUNROOF WAS SHATTERED. THERE WAS NO POINT OF IMPACT, THE GLASS WAS INTACT BUT COMPLETELY SHATTERED. I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED MY LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP, BUT SINCE IT WAS A SATURDAY THEY WERE UNAWARE IF THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE COVERED BY MY WARRANTY. I AM TAKING MY CAR IN MONDAY MORNING AND HOPE TO HEAR GOOD NEWS. I AM EXTREMELY FORTUNATE THAT THIS DID NOT OCCUR WHILE MY SUNROOF WAS OPEN WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. *TR
IN JUNE 2012 WHILE MY SONATA WAS SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY THE DRIVER SIDE GLASS SHATTERED WITH NO IMPACT. I HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT THINKING IT WAS DAMAGED SOMEHOW. BUT YESTERDAY YET AGAIN MY SONATA WAS SITTING IN THE GARAGE THIS TIME AND THE DRIVER SIDE GLASS SHATTERED AGAIN. THIS MUST BE A DEFECT IN THE CAR SOMEHOW. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY AROUND 8:45 AM WITH A SPEED OF 60 MPH WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEAR WHAT SOUNDS LIKE AN EXPLOSION INSIDE MY CAR. I BECAME VERY STARTLED. I THEN HEARD THIS ROARING OF WIND AND GLASS THROUGH SOME OF THE FABRIC WHICH ACTS AS BARRIER BETWEEN ME AND SUNROOF/MOONROOF. THERE WERE NO OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ROAD WITH ME AT THE TIME, NO ANIMALS, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE OR NOTHING AROUND TO HAVE CAUSED THIS. IT LITERALLY SOUNDED LIKE AN EXPLOSION. I THEN FIND A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER TO INSPECT WHAT HAPPENED, I THEN HAD TO TURN AROUND TO TAKE MY VEHICLE TO NEAREST HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT STATED THEY WOULD INSPECT IT BUT I WOULD MOST LIKELY HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR THIS SINCE 1) IT HAD OVER 60,000 MILES ALREADY, IN WHICH I HAVE DOCUMENTED ABOVE 66,400 MILES ON MY CAR WHICH IS APPROXIMATE CALCULATION DUE TO NOT HAVING MY VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME AT THIS TIME DUE TO IT BEING INSPECTED AT DEALERSHIP, I CAN'T GIVE A EXACT MILEAGE AT THIS TIME. 2) THEY HAVEN'T OFFICIALLY MADE THIS A RECALL YET, AS TO MY NEXT POINT THIS IS NOT THE FIRST APPARENTLY THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO. I DID HAVE GLASS FALL INTO MY VEHICLE AND HAD THE BARRIER NOT BE THERE WHO KNOWS WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED AS I COULD HAVE HAD GLASS CUT ME AND EVEN WORSE GET IN MY EYES AND CUT MY EYES OR CAUSING PERMANENT DAMAGE. I STRONGLY SUGGEST SOMEONE LOOK INTO THIS IMMEDIATELY AS THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE OR SAFE. I WILL NOT STAND FOR HYUNDAI BLAMING ME OR BULLYING ME, AND LETTING THIS CONTINUE HAPPENING. MY CAR IS WITH THE DEALERSHIP IN ALABAMA AS I WAS ON MY WAY BACK HOME TO TX, I WILL HAVE TO GET MY CAR BAGGED AND TAPED SO I CAN MAKE IT HOME TO TX TO TAKE IT TO GET FIXED AS I AM HAVING TO MISS WORK, ARRANGE CARE FOR MY KIDS, PETS, UNTIL I AM ABLE TO GET HOME TO TX. *TR
MY BROTHER WAS DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY AT ABOUT 60MPH. NO OTHER CARS WERE ON THE ROAD. THERE WAS A LOUD BANG ALMOST LIKE A GUN SHOT. HE PULLED OVER AND SAW THE SUNROOF COMPLETELY SHATTERED. THERE WERE NO ROCKS OR ANYTHING FOUND TO INDICATE AN OBJECT HITTING THE SUNROOF HAD CAUSED THE BROKEN GLASS. THE GLASS SHATTERED OUT OF NOWHERE. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, THE SUNROOF OF MY 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA SPONTANEOUSLY EXPLODED. NO VEHICLES WERE WITHIN 300 FEET AHEAD OF ME AND I WAS IN THE FAR RIGHT LANE OF THE SIX LANE DIVIDED INTERSTATE. SKIES WERE OVERCAST BUT NO HAIL OR LIGHTNING. I WAS NOT NEAR ANY OVERPASSES, AND I DID NOT WITNESS ANY FLYING FOREIGN OBJECTS. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE DEALERSHIP CLAIM TO HAVE FOUND AN "IMPACT SITE" ON THE FRONT EDGE OF THE SUNROOF, BUT THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER REPORTED THAT IT WAS INCONCLUSIVE. THE EXPLOSION LEFT A BASKETBALL SIZED HOLE IN THE SUNROOF GLASS ABOVE THE DRIVER SIDE. NO INJURIES WERE EXPERIENCED. THE SUNSHADE WAS CLOSED AT THAT TIME. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SUNROOF EXPLODED, WHILE SHE DROVE 45 MPH. THE CONTACT AND THE PASSENGER DID NOT SUFFER ANY INJURIES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 31,060.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE PARKWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE SUNROOF OF MY 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA SHATTERED. I HEARD THE GLASS FALL ONTO THE THANKFULLY CLOSED SUNSHADE AS WELL AS RUN DOWN THE BACK OF MY CAR, SCRATCHING THE ROOF AND TRUNK. I PULLED OVER AT THE NEXT EXIT AND CALLED THE POLICE. A STATE TROOPER CAME AND STATED THAT HE DID NOT FEEL THAT THERE WAS ANY EVIDENCE OF AN IMPACT TO CAUSE THE DAMAGE. I FEEL THAT THIS SIMPLY WAS A FAILURE OF THE SUNROOF DUE TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. I KNOW THERE IS A RECALL OF ANOTHER HYUNDAI MODEL OF THE SAME YEAR. I HAVE ALSO READ REPORTS IN AUTOMOBILE FORUMS OF OTHER SONATA EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. INCLUDING THIS ONE DOCUMENTED BY NBC NEWS. THE WINDSHIELD IS OPTICALLY DISTORTED AND HAS BEEN SINCE DAY #1. I POINTED THAT OUT TO THE DEALER'S SERVICE TEAM 2 TIMES. THE SECOND TIME THE SERVICE MANAGER PULLED UP A 2013 & SHOWED ME THAT IT WAS DISTORTED LIKE MY WINDSHIELD & SAID IT MUST BE NORMAL. I ASKED IF IT COULD BE REPLACED HE SAID NO. *TR
DRIVING ON HWY I-385 - LOOKING OUT THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE FRONT WINDSHIELD I THOUGHT I SAW A DOG RUN INTO THE PATH OF MY CAR. IT WAS NOT A DOG. IT WAS A DISTORTION IN MY WINDSHIELD THAT CREATED WAVY LINES OF THE GUARDRAILS THAT I WAS DRIVING BY. I TOOK MY CAR TO GREER HYUNDAI, SC, TO SEE WHAT COULD BE DONE WITH THE WINDSHIELD. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAW THE DISTORTION IN MY WINDSHIELD AND THEN WENT TO CHECK SOME OTHER 2012 SONATA'S. HE SAID THAT THE SAME DISTORTION WAS IN THOSE ALSO AND THAT NO ONE ELSE HAD COMPLAINED. HE SAID THAT HE COULD ORDER A WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT BUT THAT IT WOULD UNDOUBTLY BE THE SAME AS WHAT I ALREADY HAD. HE GAVE ME THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE PHONE NUMBER. I CALLED THEM AND WAS ASSIGNED THE CASE #4861688. AND WAS TOLD TO TAKE THE CAR TO ANOTHER CAR DEALER TO SEE WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY. I TOOK THE CARE TO GREENVILLE HYUNDAI, SD, AND THAT SALES MANAGER ALSO SAW THE DISTORTION BUT SAID THAT IT WAS IN ALL THE 2011 AND 2012 SONATA'S. I WAS TOLD TO CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE. JUST FOR GOOD MEASURE I THEN TOOK THE CAR TO CAPITOL HYUNDAI IN COLUMBIA, SC. THAT SERVICE MANAGER ALSO SAW THE DISTORTION BUT GAVE ME THE SAME ADVICE - TO CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE. SO I CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE 800-633-5151. THAT PERSON TOLD ME THAT THE CASE HAD BEEN CLOSED WHEN I WAS TOLD TO TAKE THE CAR TO ANOTHER HYUNDAI DEALER AND SEE WHAT THEY SAID. SHE THEN GAVE ME THE EMAIL ADDRESS TO MAKE THIS COMPLAINT. SHE SAID THAT IF ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAINED THEN YOU WOULD ISSUE A RECALL TO REPLACE THE WINDSHIELD. THE DISTORTION THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD IS ONLY SEEN FROM THE DRIVERS SEAT - SO ONLY AT AN ANGLE. IT'S A SAFETY HAZARD. PLEASE HELP ME SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SIX TIMES AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE RESIDUE WAS CAUSED BY THE OUT-GASSING FROM THE MATERIALS IN THE VEHICLE, SUCH AS THE SOLVENT FROM THE PLASTIC WHEN THE VEHICLE BECAME HOT. THE DEALER TRIED TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM BUT THE SMELLS AND VAPORS WOULD NOT DIMINISH. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND A CLAIM WAS FILED ON THE CONTACT'S BEHALF. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 20,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE REARVIEW MIRROR COULD NOT BE POSITIONED TO WHERE THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO SEE VEHICLES COMING FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED MOVING THE MIRROR IN EVERY POSITION AVAILABLE WITHOUT SUCCESS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO COMPLETELY TURN AROUND AND LOOK OVER HIS SHOULDER IN ORDER TO SEE APPROACHING VEHICLES. THE VEHICLE WAS NEITHER DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 6,000.

DISCOVERED ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA. IT HAS VISIBILITY PROBLEMS. DASHBOARD IS REFLECTED ON TO THE WINDSHEILD WHEN SUN IS ON YOUR LEFT (IT HAPPENED TO ME WHEN I WAS DRIVING SOUTH AROUND 8.30AM). THIS IMPAIRS THE VISIBILITY OF THE DRIVER AND COULD CAUSE SERIOUS ACCIDENTS. *TT
SEPT 11, 2011 VISIBILITY PROBLEM, DEFECTIVE GLASS IN HYUNDAI SONATA 2012 REPORTED DEFECT IN WINDSHIELD AND REAR WINDOW TO DEALER DAY AFTER PURCHASED. THE WINDSHIELD HAS DISTORTION, RIPPLES IN THE GLASS WHEN DRIVER LOOKS OVER THROUGH THE PASSENGER SIDE OF WINDSHIELD OR WHEN THE PASSENGER LOOKS AT THE ROAD AHEAD. THE DEFECT IN THE REAR WINDOW GLASS APPEARS TO HAVE WIGGLY/DISTORTED IMAGE WHEN LOOKING THROUGH THE REAR VIEW MIRROR. THIS VISUAL DISTORTION DEFECT IN THE GLASS CAUSES A DRIVER TO HAVE DISTRACTED VISIBILITY AND IS A SAFETY ISSUE. HYUNDAI IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM. NO INDICATION HOW SOON THIS PROBLEM WOULD BE RESOLVED. *TR
THE WINDSHIELD HAS RIPPLES IN THE GLASS. DRIVING AT NIGHT IS HARD BECAUSE IT PICKS UP HEADLIGHTS AND IT MAKES YOU LOOK TO SEE WHAT THE DISTORTION IS. THE BACK GLASS IS JUST AS BAD. I WALKED THE NEW CAR LOT AND ALL THE GLASS IS BAD. *TR
