IN MAY 2015, I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM HYUNDAI MOTORS AMERICA CONCERNING A DEFECT IN MY 2006 SONATA'S SEAT BELT BUCKLE ASSEMBLIES (CAMPAIGN TXX2) CAUSING THE AIRBAG LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO WACO HYUNDAI LOCATED AT 1501 W. LOOP 340, WACO, TX 76712 ON 5/14/15 FOR THE CAMPAIGN NOTICE AND OTHER MAINTENANCE/REPAIRS. WACO HYUNDAI FAILED TO HONOR THE CAMPAIGN LETTER REFUSING TO REPAIR MY SONATA BASED ON THE FACT MY SONATA HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY WRECKED. I PURCHASED MY SONATA A FEW YEARS PRIOR WHEN IT HAD ABOUT 10,000 MILES ON IT KNOWING IT HAD BEEN WRECKED AT SOME POINT PRIOR. IT HAD 76,002 AT THE TIME I DROPPED IT OFF FOR SERVICE. WACO HYUNDAI ADVISED IF I HAD A COMPLAINT TO CALL HYUNDAI MOTORS AMERICA WHICH CREATED CASE #7944327. IT TOOK HYUNDAI MOTORS AMERICA OVER A MONTH, BUT THEY TOO WOULD NOT HONOR THE CAMPAIGN LETTER BECAUSE MY VEHICLE HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY WRECKED. MY VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY REGISTERED, PASSES STATE INSPECTION AND IS ROAD WORTHY BY ALL APPEARANCES AND APPLICABLE STANDARDS, BUT NEITHER WACO HYUNDAI NOR HYUNDAI MOTORS AMERICA WOULD HONOR THEIR OWN CAMPAIGN TXX2 NOTICE.
SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY MALFUNCTION - CAR WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION DUE TO AIR BAG LIGHT ON. ENTIRE ASSEMBLY MUST BE REPLACED AT A COST OF ALMOST $500. *TR

THE DEALER STATED THAT THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,900.
AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON PERMANENTLY. DEALERSHIP SAYS IT IS A FAILURE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER AND WILL COST ME $432. EDMUNDS RESEARCH REVEALED THAT THE NHTSA IS STUDYING THIS PROBLEM IN CONSIDERATION OF A RECALL. JUST WANTED TO INFORM YOU THAT I ALSO HAVE THIS PROBLEM ALONG WITH MANY OTHER PEOPLE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELT BUCKLE FRACTURED AND THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE SENSOR PRETENSIONER FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 156,000.
THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER WAS CHANGED UNDER WARRANTY ON MY 2006 SONATA. NOW THE PASSENGER SIDE PRETENSIONER HAS SET A CODE. THE VEHICLE IS NO LONGER COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. AN ONLINE SEARCH PROVED TO BE QUITE FRUITFUL. THIS IS NOT BY ANY MEANS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. HYUNDAI IS AWARE THIS PROBLEM EXISTS AND SPANS MULTIPLE MODELS YET HAS DONE NOTHING TO REPAIR VEHICLES OUT OF WARRANTY. I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT A SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER IS NOT A WEAR ITEM. THIS PART WORKS IN CONCERT WITH YOUR AIRBAG. IT ALSO IS A CONTROLLED EXPLOSION WHICH TIGHTENS THE SEAT BELT TO A PERSON AS THE AIR BAG IS DEPLOYED. IF SOME HYUNDAI AIR BAGS WERE TO SET CODES FOR BEING OUT OF SPEC ALL VEHICLES USING THEM WOULD NO DOUGH BE RECALLED. HOWEVER, A PART WORKING IN UNISON ON THE SAME SYSTEM WITH THE SAME TECHNOLOGY IS NOT. I AM AT A LOSS FOR WHY THIS IS NOT A NATIONAL RECALL. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. PASSENGER SEAT BELT LIGHT IS ON DASHBOARD. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THERE IS SOMEONE IN THE SEAT OR NOT. SUN VISOR ON DRIVER DOESN'T STAY UP. HAD IT REPLACED DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO STAY UP. NOW THE PASSENGER SIDE VISOR IS DOING THE SAME THING. VISOR SHOULDN'T BE HAVING ISSUES. AS FOR SEATBLET LIGHT. HOPEFULLY A RECALL WILL TAKE CARE OF THIS. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE SEAT BELT MODULE ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR THE IDENTICAL COMPONENT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 38,000.

THE DEALER STATED THAT IN ORDER TO REPAIR THE FAILURE, THEY WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,878.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 78,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 43,000. I HAVE A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE AIR BAG ON THE DASH BOARD CAME ON. BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SCANNED IT AND TOLD ME THAT THE OCS SENSOR WENT BAD. THIS IS COVERED BY A RECALL. THEY ALSO INFORMED ME THAT THE RIGHT FRONT BUCKLE SENSOR IS FAILED. THE DEALERSHIP HAS ALREADY REPLACED THE BUCKLE ONCE. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THIS IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THERE ARE NO RECALLS LISTED FOR IT. I CALLED HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS TO REPORT THIS ASKING IF THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS AND THERE IS NONE. I HAD THE SEAT BUCKLE REPLACED ABOUT 1 1/2 YEARS BEFORE. *TR
TOOK TO DEALER TO CHECK ON AIR BAG INDICATOR LIGHT ON DASH. TOLD BY DEALER THAT SENSOR IN PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR $375.00. AND THAT ALL AIRBAGS WERE INOPERABLE UNTIL SENSOR IS REPLACED. CAR IS 8K MILES PAST WARRANTY. CALLED HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS HOTLINE TO FILE COMPLAINT BUT WAS TOLD NOTHING COULD BE DONE BY HYUNDAI AT THIS TIME. B&*L S&%T. MY CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT & THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT HAS BEEN OCCUPIED 10% OF THE TIME. AFTER READING ALL OF THE OTHER SONATA OWNER COMPLAINTS OF THIS NATURE, A MORON CAN DISCERN THAT THIS IS A SYSTEM DESIGN FLAW & HYUNDAI SHOULD STEP UP & CLAIM RESPONSIBLY AND MAKE THIS RIGHT B-4 PEOPLE DIE & THIS PROBLEM TURNS REAL UGLY. *TR

I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE SEAT BELT BUCKLES ON MY 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA 3 TIMES IN 85,000 MILES, TWICE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AND ONCE ON THE DRIVER SIDE. THE PROBLEM IS THE SENSOR THAT TRIGGERS THE AIRBAG LIGHT AND PREVENTS THE AIRBAG FROM DEPLOYING. IT IS AN UNUSUAL DEFECT AND TO HAVE IT HAPPEN 3 TIMES WOULD INDICATE TO ME THAT THERE IS A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT. I AM CONTACTING YOU BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY NATURE OF THE PROBLEM. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY ON THE SIDE OF THE DEFECTIVE SEAT BELT SENSOR. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE OF THIS WAS WITH LESS THEN 8,000 MILES ON THE CAR. *TR

THE SEAT-BELT WARNING CHIME ON THIS VEHICLE ACTIVATES THE MOMENT THE DRIVER'S BELT IS UNBUCKLED EVEN IF THE CAR IS AT REST, THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE IS IN PARK, AND THE PARKING BRAKE IS SET. THIS LOUD, GRATING CHIME REPEATS EVERY 6 SECS. ALTHOUGH I ASSUME THE SYSTEM MEETS CURRENT NHTSA RULES PER SE, THERE IS A SAFETY THREAT BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN MANY POSTS ON INTERNET FORUMS FROM PEOPLE WANTING TO KNOW HOW TO DEACTIVATE THE SYSTEM BECAUSE THEY, LIKE MOST DRIVERS, HAVE OCCASION TO BE IN THE VEHICLE NOT IN TRAFFIC WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING. EXAMPLES INCLUDE DRIVE-UP BANK TELLER AND ATM'S, DRIVE-THRU FOOD SERVICE LANES, AND IN PARKING LOTS WITH THE VEHICLE IDLING TO MAKE CELL PHONE SALES CALLS. SAFETY IS THREATENED BECAUSE IF THE CHIME IS DISCONNECTED THEN IT CAN'T WARN IF THE DRIVER TRULY FORGETS ONCE THE VEHICLE IS MOVED FROM REST OR IF THE DRIVER FORGETS THE KEY, WHICH WOULD INCREASE THE RISK OF JOY-RIDERS STEALING THE VEHICLE. ALSO, SHADE-TREE MECHANICS COULD DAMAGE THE SEAT-BELT PRETENSIONER SYSTEM WIRING TRYING TO "HOT-WIRE" THE BUCKLE SWITCH. I CALL ON THE NHTSA TO CALL ON HYUNDAI TO MODIFY THE SYSTEM AND THE PROMULGATE NEW RULES THAT WOULD REQUIRE THAT ADDITIONAL WARNING CHIMES AFTER THE FIRST TIMED CYCLE BE ALLOWED ONLY AFTER THERE ARE SIGNS THAT THE VEHICLE IS MOVING, SUCH AS SPEEDOMETER INPUT, THE VEHICLE'S BEING REMOVED FROM PARK OR SHIFTED INTO GEAR, OR THE PARKING BRAKE BEING RELEASED (FOR EXAMPLE, SIMILAR TO THE SYSTEM FOR THE WARNING LIGHT ON THE 1997 CHEVROLET CAVALIER THAT I DRIVE AT WORK). *NM
