THE DRIVER-SIDE SUN VISOR BROKE AFTER A ROAD TRIP, DURING WHICH IT WAS NOT EVEN USED MUCH. I HAVE READ ONLINE THAT THIS IS COMMON PROBLEM, AND I HAVE ATTACHED A PICTURE WHICH GIVES AN EXAMPLE OF THE COMMON PROBLEM THAT HAS EXACTLY OCCURRED FOR ONE OF MY SUN VISORS. THIS IS A FRUSTRATING PROBLEM, AND I HAVE NEEDED TO SPEND THE PAST 3 WEEKS DRIVING ONE-HANDED BECAUSE MY OTHER HAND IS NEEDED TO KEEP THE SUN VISOR FROM TOTALLY IMPAIRING MY VISION. I HAVE EVEN DEVELOPED PAIN IN MY ARM WHICH I MOST COMMONLY USE TO SUPPORT THE VISOR WHILE DRIVING. I CONSIDER THIS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT PREVENTS DRIVING WITH 2 HANDS. MY VISION IS TOTALLY OBSCURED WHEN IT IS NOT SUPPORTED BECAUSE I AM TALL PERSON (6'5"). IT IS AN ISSUE ALWAYS, WHEN VEHICLE IS DRIVING OR PARKED.

VISION FORWARD WAS COMPLETELY OBSCURED UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO GRAB THE VISOR AND HOLD IT OUT OF THE WAY.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE VISOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000.

BACK IN 2011, MY DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR FAILED (THE BRACKET BROKE AT THE ELBOW WHERE THE PLASTIC IS MOLDED AROUND THE BRACKET). IN LOOKING AT THE PART, I NOTED THAT THE QUALITY/GAUGE OF THE BRACKET WAS NOT VERY ROBUST. I WAS AN EMPLOYEE OF FIRST PRINCE AND THEN JOHNSON CONTROLS, AND AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH SUN VISORS AND THE BRACKETS THAT SUPPORT THEM. BASED ON MY OBSERVATIONS, THE DESIGN IS INFERIOR AND IS NOT ROBUST ENOUGH TO LAST THROUGH THE LIFETIME OF THE VEHICLE. THE REASON I'M WRITING TO YOU NOW, IS THAT MY PASSENGER SIDE VISOR ALSO FAILED RECENTLY, WITH DAMAGE IN THE EXACT SAME AREA. I AM ALSO NOTING THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE BRACKET IS STARTING TO WEAKEN, AS IT WILL FREQUENTLY NOT STAY IN A LOCKED UP POSITION. THIS WAS THE SAME SYMPTOM EXHIBITED BEFORE THE FIRST DRIVER SIDE VISOR FAILED. IN MY OPINION, THERE HAS TO BE AN EXCESSIVELY HIGH FAILURE RATE FOR THIS PART AND AS THE REPLACEMENT IS EXPENSIVE (APPX. $240), I FEEL THERE IS A RISK AND PERHAPS ALREADY OCCURRENCE OF A RISK OF THE BRACKET FAILING WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEED, AND/OR A DRIVER WHO'S VISOR FAILED, HAVING VISION IMPAIRED BY THE SUN AND BECOMING INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. I BELIEVE YOU SHOULD LOOK AT THE REPLACEMENT RATE FOR THIS PART ACROSS NOT ONLY THIS MODEL, BUT ALL OTHER'S AS I NOTE THAT FREQUENTLY THE DESIGN OF AN ELBOW BRACKET CROSSES OVER MULTIPLE PLATFORMS.

DRIVERS SIDE VISOR CAME DOWN IN HEAVY TRAFFIC THUS BLOCKING THE VIEW OF THE ROADWAY. VISOR ULTIMATELY FELL COMPLETELY OFF WITH ONLY WIRES DANGLING. A CRASH WAS BARELY AVOIDED HAD IT NOT BEEN ACCOMPLISHED BY A YOUNG EXPERIENCED FEMALE DRIVER. WITHIN 30 MINUTES THE PASSENGER SIDE VISOR DID THE SAME ALTHOUGH IT HELD ON BY THE WIRES. THIS OCCURRED WITH A PASSENGER OCCUPYING THE SEAT. THIS SITUATION IN FRONT OF THE DRIVER NEARLY CAUSED A PILEUP ON THE BUSIEST STRETCH OF FREEWAY IN RENO NEVADA KNOW AS THE SPAGHETTI BOWL. ACCORDING TO OTHER OWNERS OF THE SAME TYPE VEHICLE THEY HAVE ENCOUNTERED A SIMILAR SITUATION. HYUNDAI AND THE DEALERSHIPS SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AND LIBEL FOR ANY SUCH CAUSES OF PAST, PRESENT OR FUTURE INCIDENTS AND AN IMMEDIATE RECALL ISSUED BEFORE ANY FURTHER LOSS OF PROPERTY OR LIFE. DOCUMENTATION ON THE INTERNET CONFIRM THAT DEALERSHIPS AND MANUFACTURE ARE AWARE. REPAIR SHOULD BE MADE AT THE MANUFACTURERS EXPENSE AS THIS IS A DEFECT IN WORKMANSHIP AND PRODUCT. THE VISOR DANGLED IN FRONT OF THE DRIVER BLOCKING THE VIEW, AND STARTLING THE DRIVER. HAD TO DISASSEMBLE THE VISOR HINGE TO REMOVE THE VISOR BEFORE THE VEHICLE COULD BE SAFELY DRIVEN. UPON INSPECTION IT IS CLEAR THAT THE VISOR HINGE / BALL JOINT IS POORLY DESIGNED, WITH A PLASTIC TUBE LESS THAN 0.5MM THICK HOLDING THE ENTIRE VISOR AND FORCES WHILE IT IS MANIPULATED BY THE DRIVER. IT IS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THEY ALL FAIL. WHILE PASSENGER SIDE FAILURE IS LESS DANGEROUS, DRIVER SIDE IS VERY DANGEROUS AND STARTLING IF OCCURS WHILE DRIVING. A GOOGLE SEARCH DEMONSTRATED THIS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM EXPERIENCED BY MANY HYUNDAI OWNERS OF VARIOUS MODELS. WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 295 IN NEW JERSEY DURING THE MORNING RUSH HOUR, THE DRIVERSIDE SUN VISOR DETACHED FROM ITS MOUNTING POINT AND DROPPED INTO MY LINE OF DRIVING VISION. I'M STILL WORKING ON A SOLUTION TO PREVENT THE VISOR FROM HITTING ME IN THE HEAD WHILE I'M DRIVING AND THEN DANGLING IN FRONT OF ME AND BLOCKING MY VISION. THE FRONT LEFT TIE ROD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED A FEW MONTHS AGO. I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE DEALER DID NOT RECOGNIZE THIS PROBLEM A YEAR AGO WHEN THE WARRANTY WAS STILL ACTIVE. THE MECHANIC WHO EVENTUALLY REPLACED THE TIE ROD TOLD ME HE THINKS THIS ISSUE WAS LONG-STANDING, AND PERHAPS EXISTED WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. DEALER COST TO REPAIR: $700+. MY MECHANIC REPAIRED FOR $180 (INCLUDING FRONT-END ALIGNMENT. NOW MY BRAKES ARE SQUEALING, AND THE PADS ARE FINE. MY MECHANIC TOOK PHOTOS OF RUST ON THE ROTORS. WE OWN A 2007 SANTA FE THAT OVERALL WE HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH. IN DECEMBER 2012 WITH JUST OVER 60,000 MILES ON OUR VEHICLE WE WERE DRIVING WITH OUR 2 YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE CAR AND THE DRIVER SIDE VISOR SUDDENLY DROPPED FROM THE LEFT SIDE. THIS WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND AFFECTED THE SAFETY OF OUR FAMILY WHILE WE WERE DRIVING. WE TRIED TO PUT IT TO THE SIDE, AND PULLED OVER THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO PUSH THE PLASTIC PART BACK INTO THE SOCKET. A FEW MINUTES ON THE ROAD AND THE VISOR FELL AGAIN CAUSING MORE DANGEROUS DISTRACTION WHILE DRIVING. FOR OUR SAFETY WE HAD TO RIP THE WIRE OUT TO FULLY REMOVE THE VISOR. NOW WE ARE LEFT WITH NO VISOR TO KEEP THE SUN OUT OF OUR EYES. HERE WE ARE 6 MONTHS LATER AT 68,000 MILES AND THE PASSENGER SIDE DID THE SAME THING. WE ARE BEYOND OUR INITIAL WARRANTY AND THE VISORS ARE NOT COVERED ON THE EXTENDED WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THE DEALERSHIP SAID, 'THE VISORS SHOULD BE COVERED,WE SEE THIS ALL THE TIME'. AFTER A QUICK REVIEW ON THE WEB I SEE THAT MANY HYUNDAI DRIVERS HAVE HAD SIMILAR DANGEROUS EXPERIENCES. IT SEEMS SOME OF THE VISORS WERE EVEN PART OF A RECALL, BUT NOT THE 2007 SANTA FE. WE DON'T USE OUR VISORS EXCESSIVELY AND WE DON'T HAVE ANY WEIGHT ON THEM, THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE COVERED OR EVEN RECALLED AS IT PLACES PEOPLE IN DANGER WHEN IT FALLS DOWN, HANGS BY THE CORD, AND DISTRACTS DRIVERS. HEAT AND TIME EVENTUALLY CAUSE IT TO CRACK. IF THE DRIVER'S SIDE VISOR FALLS IN THIS FASHION IT WILL LOCK ITSELF BETWEEN THE DASH BOARD AND THE STEERING WHEEL. 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR BREAKS AND HANGS DOWN FROM ROOF AND BLOCKS THE DRIVER'S VISION. 1) I RARELY USE THE SUN VISOR; HOWEVER, ONE MORNING I CAME OUT AND THE VISOR WAS HANGING FROM THE ROOF BY WIRES (THESE POWER THE VANITY MIRROR LIGHT). THE VISOR BLOCKED MY VISION. 2) I PUSHED THE VISOR BACK UP INTO THE ROOF BRACKET. IT IMMEDIATELY FELL DOWN AGAIN. I REALLY APPLIED PRESSURE AND PUSHED IT BACK UP IN THE BRACKET. FIVE MINUTES LATER IT FELL DOWN AGAIN BLOCKING MY VISION. I THEN REMOVED THE HOLDING BRACKET FROM THE ROOF, INSERTED THE VISOR POST INSIDE IT AGAIN, AND REATTACHED THE BRACKET. THE VISOR FELL AGAIN. 3) I HAVE TO ORDER A BRAND NEW SUN VISOR TO REPLACE WHAT IS/WAS A PERFECTLY GOOD, ELECTRICALLY LIGHT FUNCTIONING, WORKING SUN VISOR. THE HYUNDAI SERVICE MANAGER TELLS ME HE SEES A LOT OF THESE VISORS THAT FALL, BUT THEY CAN'T BE REPAIRED AS SUPPOSEDLY A SPRING HAS BROKEN UP INSIDE THE MECHANISM. *KB

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR FELL, AND BLOCKED THE VISION OF DRIVER. ALONG WITH BLOCKING THE DRIVER'S VISION, THE DRIVER WAS STARTLED CAUSING THE DRIVER TO SWERVE. THE VISOR HAS A VERY SMALL AND FRAGILE PLASTIC COMPONENT HOLDING THE VISOR IN PLACE. IT APPEARS THAT THE VISOR IS DESTINED TO BREAK. THE COMPONENT THAT BROKE IS ON THE ARM THAT SWINGS THE VISOR DOWN AND TO THE LEFT, AND IS EMBEDDED IN THE INTERIOR CEILING I.E., NOT ACCESSIBLE TO ANYONE WITHOUT TAKING THE VISOR APART WITH SCREW DRIVERS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO PLAZA HYUNDAI, THEY INSISTED THE DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY A ROCK AND SAID I SHOULD CONTACT MY INSURANCE COMPANY WHICH I DID, THEIR INVESTIGATION FOUND THAT THE DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY A "DEFECTIVE WIRING IN THE DEFROSTER CAUSED A FIRE WHICH RESULTED IN DAMAGE TO WINDSHIELD." THIS REPORT WAS GIVEN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND STILL THEY REFUSE TO REPAIR MY VEHICLE. DUE TO SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUES, I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO PURSUE THIS ISSUE AND THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN STORAGE. I HAVE RESUMED MY ATTEMPTS TO GET HYUNDAI TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DAMAGES AND FIX THE FAULTY WIRING, AS OF 2/22/10 THEY STILL REFUSE TO EVEN INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THE WASHER FLUID DOES NOT SQUIRT ONTO THE WINDOW. AT BEST, THE FLUID SOMETIMES DRIBBLES OUT AND HITS THE LOWEST PART OF THE WINDOW, BUT ONLY AFTER HOLDING THE WASHER FLUID BUTTON FOR UP TO 30 SECONDS. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THE LINE WAS PROBABLY FROZEN AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THEY RECOMMENDED I CHECK THE FLUID LINE FOR BLOCKAGE OR HEAT IT UP WITH A HAIR DRYER. I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ON TWO DIFFERENT CARS FROM THE SAME MANUFACTURER, AND THE PROBLEM EXISTS IN ALL TYPES OF WEATHER. DURING LIGHT SNOW AND RAIN, THE WINDOW GETS DIRTY AND I HAVE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD TO CLEAN THE WINDOW IN ORDER TO CONTINUE DRIVING. I THINK THAT'S A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
