2016 Honda Pilot Transmission Problems

There was a small ticking/knocking noise that started the week before I took my Honda Pilot in to the dealer. I took the car in for regular service and told them about this noise. Under further inspection, I was advised by the Honda dealership that the piston connecting rod bearing had failed causing damage to the motor.

On 4-24-25 my engine had a knocking sound. I took it to a Honda Service center and they ran a diagnostic and found a rod bearing issue. Their recommendation was to replace the engine and quoted me an estimate of about $9000.

We have always taken great care of our Pilot, regular oil changes, tire rotations, checking the fluid levels. Just before we went on vacation, our Pilot's check engine light came on and started blinking under normal driving conditions. When we hooked up the code reader, it was for a misfire in the second cylinder.

Our 2016 Honda Pilot suddenly lost power on [XXX] and simultaneously developed a loud knocking sound coming from the engine on Monday ([XXX]) evening sometime between 7 and 8 PM. My son who was driving the vehicle was lucky to avoid an accident because it was difficult to pull to the right side of the road as there were fast-moving cars merging onto [XXX] from the westbound lanes of [XXX] .

The vehicle will delay driving with auto turn off enabled almost causing collisions. Then vehicle delays switching gears. Not daily The vehicle smells like gasoline occasionally after a fill up.

My spouse was stopped at a traffic light, when the light turned green she accelerated but immediately lost power and the vehicle was stalled in the middle of the intersection. She tried to start it but would not restart.

while driving on highways and streets, car would jerk and transmission downshift or not work, causing a grinding noise within the car. pilot would just shut off and slowing decrease speed by itself. happens many times already and is a safety concern for people who purchased this vehicle.

There is no way for the driver of the car to put the transmission into neutral if needed with an electrical/battery failure. According to Honda, there is a special mechanical device that tow truck drivers would have that physically attaches to the engine to shift the car into neutral.

The car on prior occasions would not start and it would show emission alert as well as other alerts, have the car for servicing and they started checking and replacing everything. Same problem happened 2 weeks ago but resolved on its own.

Auto engine Idle shut/off malfunctioning. At red light...when turned green, took foot off brake to accelerate...car completely shut off. Dashboard lights came on and instructed to shift vehicle to park and restart.

My vehicle shut down while driving with error messages on screen: emissions transmission, vehicle stability assist, hill start assist, trailer stability, assist, power steering, road departure,collision mitigation, blind spot, transmission, battery light, oil light. Coasted into safe place and had towed. Could not turn car back on other than seeing the above warnings.

I noticed the car started jerking between 30-50 MPH. The RPM's would also pulse at the same time. I took it to the dealer and of course the warranty was out.

The transmission is jerky and clunky in lower gears. Often when shifting from first and second gears the pilot jerks and misfires. Happens sporadically, but consistently.

I was driving at 15 MPH and my car jolted and stalled and several (5) warning lights came on. Vehicle stability, brake, power steering, and a couple other lights. I turned the vehicle off and restarted the car.

[2016 honda pilot exl AWD with sensing, 28 k miles and 2.4 years since purchase] on friday aug/24/2018 while driving home (around 40mph) the vsa light came on and stayed on for barely 4-5 seconds and then turned off. Did not notice any major issues then.

While driving all warning lights activated cycling through each of them. The vehicle lost almost all power causing a very unsafe and potentially fatal condition. Several transmission and other codes were noted following the incident.

I was driving at 75mph on a heavily congested area of the interstate. Vehicle was running normal, then the emissions light came on followed by 'transmission system problem' and I lost all ability to accelerate the vehicle, despite pressing the gas pedal to the floor.

I backed out of a parking space at work, and when I braked and pressed the drive button, the car did not shift. After several tries the car went into drive. I drove out of the parking lot onto a side street.

2/4/16: backed out of garage, put car in park, lowered garage door. Was about to exit vehicle to adjust passenger side mirror, car surged forward, crashing through garage door. Brakes would not stop vehicle as it was crashing through the garage; immediately applied emergency brakes, car finally stopped against shelving in garage and wten became wedged in garage.

Vehicle surges forward when 9-speed automatic transmission shifts during coasting or light braking. Surging routinely occurs at moderate speeds ( 35-45mph ) when coasting downhill on a secondary highway. Surging has also occurred at parking lot speeds, and has necessitated emergency braking to avoid collision.

9-speed transmission in the "touring" trim level of 2016 honda pilot has an electronic push-button shifter. This shifter intermittently fails to respond to firm button pushes. This is especially problematic when shifting from forward to reverse or vice versa in parking situations.

To Whom It May Concern, I am submitting this complaint to report ongoing engine and emissions system problems with my 2016 Honda Pilot that raise serious safety concerns and may be related to a broader defect currently under investigation. I purchased this vehicle from a dealership in April of 2024 and the issues began shortly afterward at approximately 67,000 miles.

Honda is aware of thousands of 9 speed transmission failures. but worst of all they tell you that you failed to change trans fluid as scheduled, but there is no schedule printed in their owner's manual, nor in their vehicle service maintenance manual. the service manual only speaks to the quality of fluid required, and that it not be mixed with other brands of trans fluids.

I own a 2016 Honda Pilot AWD with approximately 160,000 miles. Within a week of purchase, the engine suffered a crankshaft/rod bearing failure. While driving, the engine suddenly began knocking, lost power, and stalled in traffic.

2017: transmission replacement UW 2021: Vehicle stopped/ lost power on I44 at a speed of 70 MPH. I immediately pulled over and called Roper on a recorded line per roper Honda. Took it to roper- needs a new motor.

While driving vehicle lost power and started smoking; and would not restart. Towed to honda, they stated engine siezed and connecting rod was protruding out of the side of engine. Took to another shop and they confirmed rod bearings failed and caused connecting rod to break causing it to go through the engine.

Turned the car off and on and pulled in and then proceeded to charge my portable jumper just in case. Came back a few hours later and drove it home - all sorts of sensors were going off but the car was still fine.

Engine made noise. Engine stopped suddenly on highway. Vehicle with 3 occupants had to be towed from highway and transported to honda dealership for repairs.

When driving down the interstate with a car full of people. We noticed a clicking sound coming from the engine. The sound proceeded to get worse and louder.

On 9.14.23, rod to crankshaft broke leading to catastrophic engine failure and damage. I had to coast off of the exit ramp I was on to the side of the road; then have vehicle towed to Martin Honda Services. ~$13k in repairs.

Car left us stranded at busy intersection. Auto start system failed to restart vehicle. Car would not restart even after placing car back into park.

1) Engine failure - Several times our 2016 Touring has stalled at a stoplight. It takes time to start back up. I have to turn on hazard light, and it is getting worse every occurrence.

For years, dating back to 2018, our 2016 Honda Pilot Elite auto on/off switch operations has been failing. Vehicle will not restart the engine after its engaged the auto start off. Engine and all components including electrical are off.

My 2016 Honda Pilot Touring stalls out at a red light while using the auto stop-start. It happens occasionally when I take my foot off the brake and put my foot on the gas. Instead of coming out of idle with the engine starting up again, the car would stall completely and I would have to put the car in park, press the brake pedal and push the start button to get it on again.

The auto start/stop feature of the vehicule has stopped working on several occassions. We would be coming off the highway and or off a red light and the car will stall of the auto start/stop function is on. This has happened a few times in a very busy intersection or street.

Multiple times the idle-stop feature has caused my car to stall out at an intersection. The idle-stop will engage, but when I take my foot off the break (or move the steering wheel), the car does not start again, instead it will try to start but then turns off completely. At that point I have to re-engage the break, put the car in park, turn off the car and then try to turn it back on as normal.

Ocassionally when stopped at intersections my 2016 Honda Pilot touring edition will go into idle stop mode and not restart. Upon trying to proceed the engine will try to start and stall out. The engine goes dead and I am unable to accelerate out of the intersection.

Vehicle stalls and shuts off at a stop when engine idle stop is enabled. All lights on dashboard are illuminated and vehicle automatically sets to N gear. Upon attempting to restart engine, It takes several attempts to put vehicle back into P gear and start engine by pressing the push start button as well has having foot on the brake pedal.

Unpredictably when my auto idle is engaged my vehicle will stall, resulting in me being unable to move my vehicle without forcing a prompted restart.This occurs at very random times to include when I am stopped at a stop light, waiting in a drive-thru line, in traffic, or any additional times when the auto idle engages.

Two incidents occurred: 1) On 12-6-21, while travelling in the high speed lane, my wife's car shut down causing her to become stranded on the side of the highway. The first system report from the incident can be found attached as indicated permanent transmission codes of P0716 and P0700.

Throughout last trip I noticed the transmission would make jerking shifts. While on the interstate during a pass travelling at 73 MPH the transmission down shifted and made a loud banging sound, engine lost power but was revving high, I could not accelerate to get away from surrounding traffic.

While changing lanes (car in motion 65 MPH) in the city, warning lights in the instrument claster started to appear. Engine lost power ( could not accelerate) had to change lanes in traffic almost got hit by semi trucks. Managed to drift to side of the road, car went into neutral and could not get into park.

We have had multiple, ongoing problems with our 2016 honda pilot elite since early on in our ownership. When I try to go after coming to a stop, the car tries to stall and has stalled several times in the middle of the road.

On september 2, 2016 while ascending up a winding 2-lane highway (highway 18) to lake arrowhead, our year old 2016 honda pilot touring (with a zf 9-speed transmission) began decelerating rapidly from 55 MPH to 20 MPH. My wife was driving with our 4 children and was able to pull to the side of the road. She pulled over, turned the car off and a sheriff stopped.

I had to replace my transmission in my 2016 Honda Pilot. Honda paid for part of the repairs and I was responsible for the remaining amount. It has been well documented that this year and model have transmission problems.

Vehicle was fixed for auto start stop under recall. They changed all the parts including capacitors. Within 5000 miles it started happening again.

The engine is making a very loud internal noise and it is available upon request. There is a major fear of the engine seizing while driving. I don't know if the vehicle has been taken to a dealer for this issue before.

The ATF Warmer failed. This allowed engine coolant and transmission fluid to mix. This caused the engine and transmission to overheat.

The brakes have been repaired and replaced repeatedly. The vehicle locked down yesterday 2/25/25 when the driver was headed to school to pick up the children. The car came to a complete halt and was a danger to others with a "transmission engine" warning light on the dash.

Engine failure consistent with recall 23V-751, and would like this included in NHTSA investigation RQ24013. Lost acceleration and check engine light came on. Pulled off of Interstate, turned off vehicle and restarted.

This vehicle was recently recalled for the START / STOP in 2023 after complaining about it since 2017. The vehicle was repaired which resulted in starter and all related components associated with the recall. I questioned the repair as if you can't duplicate the failure (turn it on and turn it off) how do you know you have it fixed.

Purchase Honda Certified with around 38,000 miles. Within days of owning became apparent there were drivetrain issues. In higher gears while cruising at speeds between 25 and 60 MPH, the car would pulse -- the speed goes up and down and the tachometer indicated same with RPM pulsing.

Honda pilot 2016 -the transmission causes the transmission fluid to overheat. The overheating issue leads to a 'judder' in the transmission. The car accelerates in a very jerky way especially between 30 and 50.

My vehicle has been loosing power when accelerating. This has been an ongoing issue for approximately six months or so. I' have taken it to two different mechanic shops locally and both have stated that some of the fuel injectors are not working properly and 5 cylinders are misfiring.

Through diagnostic at Honda Dealership, the #5 bearing failed causing engine damage (crank shaft and connecting rod). This pilot year is included in the current Part 573 Safety Recall Report, however this particular VIN is not currently included.

1) First and most annoying is the start button displays code on the screen "keyless start system problem ". Its done it for about two three now. There is no recall for my VIN.

My engine broke and the 2016 Honda Pilot AWD engine locked up and the dealership is saying it’s the same issue as the 2016-2019 recall. Also I own a 2008 Honda element AWD windshield cracked. The recall for every Honda Element year except 2008.

I have a very loud knocking noise in the engine of 2016 Honda Pilot. The dealership told me it was a bad rod bearing. The same day the dealership told me there was going to be a recall on my vehicle for this exact problem.

While driving at freeway speeds of 80 MPH, and while passing a vehicle, Engine wants to temporarily slow (like it's dropped a cylinder or two), and the car will NOT speed up. Vehicle rpms will vary and not be steady on light to medium acceleration between 20 to 60 MPH. RPM guage needle will bounce up and down slightly while accelerating. Torque converter seems to not be locking up resulting in judder.

The engine begins to idle rough, after a few days of driving a lot of cluster lights come on starting with check engine light, VSA as well as others. Disconnecting battery works to clear the the codes, engine will appear to idle ok but after a week of driving it will start idling rough again, then the cluster lights will light up as before.

Transmission has hard shifts and jerking when accelerating at a normal rate and approaching your designated speed. I also had an issue when I was trying to accelerate up a mountain where the transmission did not want to switch to a lower gear and accelerate.

The biggest issue is a 'keyless start system' issue. Message is on dashboard constantly. Looking at complaint boards for 2016 honda pilot, I'm shocked this isn't a recall.

My car will die after being stopped (ex. At a red light, stop sign) and will not restart right away. Sometimes it doesn't die completely.

When accelerating from a stop or low speeds there is a noticeable hesitation before the vehicle will begin to accelerate. It is almost as if the vehicle is hunting for the proper gear and engine RPM before beginning to move. On occasion it will also surge forward once the transmission engages.

I was driving the car and suddenly ever single warning light went on, I heard a loud noise and the vehicle stopped running and would not start back up. I was told I had a timing belt failure and that my engine threw pistons and was destroyed. This vehicle had 78k and had every oil change required.

The transmission has subtle but concerning jerking between 10-30mph, especially while accelerating. This can be getting on the freeway, driving straight down the street or going up hills. I noticed it is worse when going up a sloped surface.

On august 9, 2020, I was driving, at 75, with the cruise control on, I needed extra speed to pass a vehicle on the right side, I pressed the gas pedal with the cruise control still engaged and the vehicle went into a power down mode with the dashboard flashing codes and then went blank. The engine downshifted and the engine speed increased to 7,000 RPM.

I was driving on a dual two lane highway at 55 MPH. At a cross road a traffic light was red, and I stopped the vehicle. The automatic idle stop shut off the engine for 1/2 to 1 minute, before the traffic light turned green.
