VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL

Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain Accelerator Pedal Assemblies part numbers 699-114 and 825-5029-1, sold as replacement parts for 2003-2006 Acura MDX, 2004-2008 Acura TL and TSX, 2003-2007 Honda Accord, 2005-2006 Honda CR-V, 2007-2011 Honda Element, 2005-2008 Honda Pilot and 2006-2014 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The rotating portion of the accelerator pedal assembly may bind. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 124, "Accelerator Control Systems."

Fix: Dorman will notify owners, and qualified service facilities will replace the affected accelerator pedal assemblies, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2019. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, using option 5. Dorman's number for this recall is AS1019XXXX.

WHILE DRIVING MY CAR AT 60 MPH ON CRUISE CONTROL, IT SUDDENLY STARTED INCREASING SPEED. THEN I NOTICED THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS PRESSED TO THE FLOOR OF MY CAR. THEN I BEGAN TO USE THE BRAKES TO TRY AND CONTROL THE SPEED, BUT THEY DID NOT FUNCTION WELL AT ALL. FINALLY AFTER STRUGGLING IN ON THIS RURAL ROAD, I WAS ABLE TO SLOW IT DOWN, I CALLED 911, THEN I JUST USED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP IT BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO. ALTHOUGH THIS WAS A TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE, IT COULD HAVE BEEN TRAGIC IF HAD NOT BEEN IN A RURAL AREA WITH VERY LITTLE TRAFFIC. UP TO THAT POINT, THIS CAR HAD BEEN IN EXCELLENT CONDITION LOW MAINTENANCE AND REALLY GOOD CAR, BUT THAT DAY IT WAS SMOKING AND I THOUGHT IT WOULD CATCH FIRE. LASTLY, THE REPAIRS COST $696 WHICH IS MUCH MORE THAN I HAD EVER PAID FOR THIS CAR

I'M DRIVING 427 SOUTH (TORONTO) LATE EVENING, AND I APPROACH SOMEONE WHO IS DRIVING 80 KM/HR, SO I DECIDE TO OVERTAKE THE CAR. I CHANGE A LANE, ACCELERATE FOR COUPLE SECONDS, AND WHEN I RELEASE A GAS PEDAL, MY CAR DOESN'T SLOW DOWN, IT CONTINUES TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN, AND ENGINE IS RUNNING VIOLENTLY, IT REACHES MAX RPMS (I THINK IT'S 5000 RPMS), AND THAN A COMPUTER DROPS RPMS DOWN. SO, NOTHING IS PRESSING A GAS PEDAL, AND THE ENGINE PULLING LIKE CRAZY, CAR IS ACCELERATING, AND HIGHWAY IS OVER IN 5 SECONDS. I TOUCH A GAS PEDAL - IT IS SOFT, BUT IT'S SPRINGING BACK WHEN I RELEASE IT, AND THERE IS NO A BOTTLE OR A CARPET STUCK IN BETWEEN, I CHECK CRUSE CONTROL - IT IS NOT ON, SO I PRESS BRAKES AND TRY TO SLOW DOWN THE CAR WITH BRAKES WHICH IS NOT EASY BECAUSE THE ENGINE IS STILL RUNNING ON MAX RPMS AND PULLING A CAR, YOU CAN FEEL IT. SO, I STOP EVENTUALLY AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE. THE NEXT DAY I CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD FOR THE PROBLEM, AND I DISCOVERED THE NEXT. THERE IS A PART OF A CAR CALLED A THROTTLE, THAT REGULATES AIR INTAKE IN THE ENGINE, AND THIS WAY SPEED OF ENGINE IS REGULATED TOO. THE THROTTLE IS REGULATED BY TWO CABLES. ONE CABLE (NOT A WIRE) GOES FROM A GAS PEDAL, AND IT'S ATTACHED TO A METAL BRACKET ON A THROTTLE. ANOTHER CABLE (NOT A WIRE) GOES FROM CRUISE CONTROL, AND IT'S ATTACHED TO A PLASTIC BRACKET ON A THROTTLE. SO, PLASTIC DETERIORATED OVER TIME, AND CRUISE CONTROL CABLE BROKE OFF AND JAMMED THE THROTTLE ON THE MAX OPENING WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I THINK HONDA HAS TO DO A RECALL TO FIX THIS SITUATION BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. WHEN SOMETHING BRAKES IN YOUR CAR AND YOU CANNOT START A CAR, OR WHEN SOMETHING STARTS SQUEAKING OR RATTLING, AND YOU HAVE TIME TO GO TO A MECHANIC TO FIX IT - IT'S ONE STORY, BUT WHEN YOU DRIVE AND YOU CAR ACCELERATES ON IT'S OWN - IT'S A DIFFERENT STORY.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2004 HONDA ACCORD. WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP, THE VEHICLE SPED OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASHED INTO A RETAINING WALL. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE RIBS AND HAD A LOT OF INTERNAL BRUISING, INCLUDING LACERATIONS FROM THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. THE INJURIES REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO A TOW LOT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 39,655.

UPON ENTERING THE EXPRESSWAY (FROM THE ENTRANCE RAMP), I ENGAGED THE ACCELERATOR (GAS PEDAL) TO TRANSITION INTO EXISTING TRAFFIC. UPON REACHING AN ADEQUATE SPEED, I QUICKLY BEGAN TO APPROACH A CAR IN FRONT OF ME (THIS WAS DURING MORNING RUSH HOUR). I NEEDED TO APPLY A BIT OF PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES TO REACT TO FLOW OF TRAFFIC - AND UPON TAKING MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, REALIZED THAT MY CAR WAS STILL ACCELERATING. I QUICKLY REAPPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES AND TRIED TO USE MY LEFT FOOT TO "UN-JAM" THE ACCELERATOR. I DID NOT LOOK TO SEE WHAT MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THE ACCELERATOR TO STICK, AS I WAS FOCUSED ON THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME. I THEN APPLIED HEAVY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES, ENGAGED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE, AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. MERGING ONTO CT RT 8 SOUTH, I ACCELERATED USING PASSING GEAR. UNABLE TO DISENGAGE THE THROTTLE, I PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL AND SHUT OFF THE IGNITION. SINCE I THEN HAD NO POWER STEERING NOR POWER BRAKES, IT TOOK ALMOST 3 MILES TO STOP. I REACHED SPEEDS OF 85-90 AND HAD TO WEAVE IN AND OUT OF TRAFFIC UNTIL I COULD GET TO THE SHOULDER AND EVENTUALLY STOP. AFTER BEING TOWED TO THE HONDA DEALER, I WAS INFORMED THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE WRAPPED AROUND THE THROTTLE CABLE THUS STICKING IT. I AM HAVING THE CAR COMPLETELY CHECKED: BRAKES, TRANSMISSION, ACCELERATOR, ETC. THIS WAS A TOYOTA MOMENT THAT LUCKILY ENDED WITH NO ACCIDENTS NOR DEATHS.

THE CAR HAS ALSO BEEN IN PARK AND THE RPMS INCREASED TO ABOVE 4. TWICE AT A STOPLIGHT THE CAR WAS REVVING UP AND I WAS PRESSING DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL WITH BOTH FEET TO KEEP IT STOPPED. THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE CONTACT WAS INVOLVED IN A SECOND CRASH. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED HOWEVER, NEVER RESPONDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 80,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 96,000.

THE POLICE WAS CALLED TO THE SCENE AND INSPECTED THE VEHICLE. THE POLICE INFORMED THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS STUCK. HE APPLIED SLIGHT PRESSURE TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHICH IMMEDIATELY RELEASED FROM THE STUCK POSITION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. ALSO, HE STATED THE FAILURE COULD POSSIBLY BE RELATED TO THE DRIVER SIDE FLOOR MAT OR THE GPS CHARGER. THE CONTACT EXPRESSED SIGNIFICANT CONCERN THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL DEFECT HAD CONTRIBUTED TO THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 95,000.

I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED THE BRAKES BUT THEY HAD LOCKED AND WERE PUSHING UP AGAINST MY FOOT. I CALLED 911 THE OFFICER TOLD ME TO TAKE MY FOOT OFF BRAKE. WHEN I DID THE CAR IMMEDIATELY ACCELERATED TO 80 MPH. IT INCREASED IN INCREMENTS OF 10 TO 120MPH. BRAKES AND EMERGENCY BRAKES COMPLETELY FAILED. I TRAVELED FOR MORE THAN 6 MILES DODGING TRAFFIC BEFORE THE CAR SUDDENLY DECELERATED AND THE BRAKES RE-ENGAGED. I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND LET POLICE KNOW WHERE I WAS. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALER WHERE THEY FOUND THROTTLE BODY WAS STUCK OPEN DUE TO SOOT AND CARBON BUILD UP. DEALER NOTED THE THROTTLE BODY LOOKED LIKE IT HAD NEVER BEEN CLEANED. DEALER SUGGESTED IF I HAD BROUGHT THE CAR TO HONDA FOR REGULAR SERVICE THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. I SERVICE MY CAR EVERY 3000 MILES MY CAR HAD BEEN SERVICED BY HONDA FOR TUNE UPS AND OTHER PROBLEMS IN THE PAST. I AM EXTREMELY LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. I HAVE READ 11 SIMILAR INCIDENTS ON THIS WEBSITE. UNINTENDED ACCELERATION CAR SHIFT LEVER WAS IN D3 AND THE BRAKE WAS DOWN WHEN THE ENGINE STARTED REVVING UP AND DOWN AS IF IN NEUTRAL. THINKING THE RACING NOISE WAS FROM ANOTHER VEHICLE THE DRIVER RELEASED THE BRAKE IN PREPARATION OF DRIVING. THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LURCHED FORWARD BURNING RUBBER. RE-APPLYING THE BRAKES BROUGHT IT TO A STOP. AT THAT POINT IT WAS NOTICED THE GEAR SELECTOR WAS ON D3 RATHER THAN D. THE GEAR WAS PUT INTO DRIVE AND ALL SEEMED OK. THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED LATER AND NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. THE ONLY UNUSUAL THING WAS THAT WE HAD JUST USED THE VEHICLE TO JUMP START ANOTHER. *NM

I WAS DRIVING ALONG AT APPROXIMATELY 35-40 MILES PER HOUR WHEN I STARTED TO BRAKE AT A RED-LIGHT. MY CAR DID DID NOT STOP ACCELERATING. I PRESSED THE BRAKES AS FAR AS THEY WOULD GO TO SLOW DOWN. WHEN I GOT TO A LOW SPEED I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND THEN I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURNED THE IGNITION OFF. A MINUTE LATER I TURNED THE IGNITION ON AND THE ENGINE WAS STILL RACING WHILE IT WAS IN PARK. I BROUGHT IT TO A DEALERSHIP AND THEY HELD IT FOR 2-3 DAYS AND INFORMED ME THAT THEY DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE. I AM VERY CONCERNED DUE TO THE FACT THAT THIS WAS THE THIRD INCIDENT OF UNCONTROLLABLE ACCELERATION.

THE VEHICLE ENGINE RPM JUMPED HIGH TO AROUND 2000 THEN STAYED AT AROUND 1300 EVEN THOUGH IT IS TOTALLY STOPPED. ENGINE WAS STILL DELIVERING EXTRA POWER AND MAKING NOISE LOUDER THAN IT SHOULD BE. I HAD TO STEP HARDER ON THE BRAKE IMMEDIATELY TO STOP THE CAR TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR IN THE FRONT. IT WONT HAPPEN OFTEN BUT HAVE ALREADY HAPPENED 3 TIMES (MAY 28TH, JUNE 16TH AND JUNE 18TH). *AK
