Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 765)
Electrical System,exterior Lighting →2 issues
Your vehicle's lights went out while driving, then came back on when you adjusted the steering wheel, suggesting an electrical short circuit. After this, your truck made a strange sound, lost all power, and wouldn't start; the alarm also began going off and couldn't be turned off with the remote or key. Additionally, the gear indicator doesn't move when you change gears, and the AC compressor isn't working. A thorough electrical system diagnosis and repair of the short circuit is needed to restore power and proper function.

Your driver's side turn signal and brake lights stopped working while driving or parked. However, when you tilted the steering column upward, these lights would work again. This suggests an intermittent electrical connection issue related to the steering column position. The repair will likely involve inspecting and possibly replacing the wiring harness or connections near the steering column.

Power Train →2 issues
Your vehicle unexpectedly shifted into gear and drove itself down the road while parked, crossing an intersection and hitting a brick wall—even though the shift lever showed the car was still in Park. The vehicle was running unattended when this happened. This suggests a serious issue with the transmission or shift mechanism that needs immediate investigation.

Your vehicle stalled unexpectedly while driving at various speeds without any warning signs. You were able to restart it manually and it ran normally afterward, but an independent mechanic diagnosed the issue as a transmission malfunction. The stalling could happen again while you're driving, potentially putting you in an unsafe situation. A transmission repair or rebuild may be needed to prevent future stalling.

Your 2001 Ford Explorer has started leaking from the roof without any visible damage, and the source of the leak cannot be located. Water has accumulated inside, causing mold to grow throughout the interior, which poses a health risk to you and your passengers. Finding and sealing the leak source, along with treating the mold contamination, will be necessary to resolve this issue.

Your exterior door handle keeps breaking, and you can't open the door normally without using the back door instead. This has happened repeatedly—you've replaced the handles three times in two years. In an emergency situation like an accident, a broken door handle could prevent someone from getting you out of the vehicle quickly.

Steering →1 issue
Your steering system is producing smoke while driving. You may notice the engine feels rough or unstable, and your overdrive indicator light is flashing on and off. This combination of symptoms suggests a serious issue with your steering and engine that needs immediate attention to prevent potential loss of control.

Electrical System,air Bags,engine →1 issue
While driving your 2001 Ford Explorer, you noticed a burning smell, and the airbag suddenly deployed without any impact or warning. You safely coasted to the side of the road and saw flames coming from under the hood. The fire department had to put out the fire, and the vehicle was destroyed. The underlying cause of the fire and airbag deployment was not determined since the vehicle wasn't inspected by a mechanic or dealer.

Suspension,structure,unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your vehicle rolled over onto its side while driving on the highway at the posted speed limit on dry pavement in good weather. When you attempted to change lanes, the car skidded and then tipped over. This type of rollover may be related to suspension geometry, stability control, or tire characteristics that affected how the vehicle handled during the lane change maneuver.

Air Bags →1 issue
Your airbag warning light has been on continuously since you bought the vehicle in 2014. This means your airbag system isn't functioning properly and won't deploy in a crash. The fix will require diagnostic testing to identify the faulty sensor or component, followed by replacement of the affected part.

Suspension →1 issue
While driving at 35 mph, your front passenger wheel suddenly seized and pulled your vehicle toward oncoming traffic. The wheel bearing on that side had completely disintegrated, making the vehicle undrivable and requiring a tow. The repair involved replacing the failed wheel bearing.

Air Bags,seat Belts →1 issue
During a January 2016 accident, your airbags failed to deploy, causing you to brace yourself against the steering wheel and resulting in neck and shoulder injuries requiring rotator cuff surgery. You've noticed similar airbag deployment failures in other vehicles of the same make, leading to injuries in those cases as well. The airbag system may need inspection to determine why it didn't activate during the crash.

Air Bags,wheels →1 issue
While driving on the freeway, your front driver's wheel fell off, causing your truck to roll over and hit two other cars. The pin that holds the wheel on came out. Additionally, the airbags failed to inflate during the crash. This issue involves a critical wheel retention failure and airbag system malfunction that requires immediate inspection of wheel fastening hardware and the entire airbag system.

Seats →1 issue
Your front driver's seat became difficult to recline up and down. After three dealer visits to address a recall, the mechanic damaged the seat while installing a new bolt, leaving it unable to recline properly and requiring the middle row seats to prop it upright. The seat ultimately needs to be replaced, but Ford declined to help cover the repair costs. Fixing this will likely require replacing the entire driver's seat assembly or repairing the recline mechanism.

Power Train,structure,engine →1 issue
Your 2001 Ford Explorer is leaking both antifreeze and transmission fluid, and you're noticing thick smoke coming from the engine. You've also found significant rust underneath the vehicle with a hole in the running boards that's nearly caused them to fall off — you can see the ground through the hole. The check engine light hasn't come on, so the problems may not have been automatically detected. Repairs will likely involve locating and sealing the fluid leaks, inspecting the cooling and transmission systems, and addressing the structural rust and running board damage.

Power Train,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your car requires 3 to 5 attempts to start, even after replacing the gas pump, spark plugs, cables, and temperature sensor. Additionally, your overdrive off light is flashing and you're experiencing rough gear shifts, particularly between 2nd and 3rd gear. The starting issue may require fuel system diagnostics, while the transmission problem may need transmission fluid evaluation or internal transmission service.

Structure →1 issue
Your rear door child safety locks aren't working properly. When the locks are engaged, the rear doors can't be opened from inside the vehicle, but they can still be opened from outside. This defeats the purpose of the child safety locks, which are designed to prevent children from accidentally opening doors while the vehicle is moving.

Electrical System,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your car sometimes won't start when you turn the key, even after multiple attempts. The dealer wasn't able to diagnose the specific problem. The issue could be related to the electrical system, engine, or fuel system, but the root cause wasn't identified.
