Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 218)

Fuel/propulsion System3 issues
criticalFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Feb 2026

Your 2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid's fuel pump may lose pressure unexpectedly, causing the engine to stall without warning — this has happened six times between 15,000 and 35,000 miles. Once it stalls, the engine may not restart for 20-60 minutes, which is particularly dangerous if it happens on a highway or in traffic. Ford has identified this as a known issue (Recall 25S75), but the repair parts and solution are not yet available, so dealers cannot permanently fix it yet.

NHTSA #: 11718125
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2026

Your Explorer is subject to an open safety recall (25S75/25V455) related to the fuel system that has been pending for 8 months without a remedy available yet. The manufacturer has not yet released a fix for this issue. You should contact your Ford dealer to check the status and be notified when the repair becomes available.

highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Jan 2026

Your fuel gauge and 'miles to empty' display give inaccurate readings whenever your Explorer is parked on an incline, even when the tank is full. The gauge fluctuates unexpectedly and doesn't reliably show how much fuel you actually have, which led to at least one false "out of fuel" warning that required roadside assistance. Parking on level ground or refueling temporarily resolves the issue, but the problem returns on slopes. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the fuel level sensor or its wiring connections.

NHTSA #: 11710580
Power Train2 issues
criticalPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Mar 2026

Both catalytic converters in your Explorer have failed, and one broke apart so severely that a pipe disconnected from the exhaust system and fell onto the interstate while you were driving—a serious safety hazard to you and other drivers. The Ford dealership confirmed both converters were cracked, with one completely broken. You had noticed noise and vibration for over a year before the failure, but the dealer couldn't identify the problem until the complete breakdown revealed it. The fix will require replacing both failed catalytic converters and repairing any damaged exhaust components.

NHTSA #: 11722072
criticalPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Feb 2026

After your 2022 Ford Explorer had recall work done on June 21, 2025 to fix rear axle fastener problems, a bolt connecting the rear subframe to the differential broke while you were driving, causing the differential to drop and the driveshaft to disconnect. This is the exact same failure the recall was supposed to prevent. Grease leaked out and the driveshaft was damaged against the subframe, which could have caused loss of control at highway speeds. The repair will likely involve replacing the fasteners, differential cover, driveshaft, and potentially inspecting the entire rear axle assembly to ensure the original recall work was done correctly.

NHTSA #: 11715426
Exterior Lighting2 issues
highEXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Mar 2026

Your headlamp warning light keeps coming on even though both lights work fine. When driving with automatic headlights on, your headlamps rapidly cycle between bright and normal when approaching other vehicles, and this continues even in manual mode. The Ford dealer identified a wet automatic headlamp module as the likely cause, which costs about $1,200 to repair and is reportedly a known Ford issue. This creates a safety concern since the flashing bright lights can distract oncoming drivers.

NHTSA #: 11722629
highEXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Mar 2026

Your front passenger side lighting component started blinking about 6 months ago and is now completely out. When you tried to replace just the bulb, you were told you need to buy the entire lighting unit for $2,800 at the dealership. You've found that hundreds of other Ford owners, mostly from 2020-2025 models, are experiencing the same problem, and Ford has declined to cover it under warranty. Fixing this will likely require replacing the entire front passenger side lighting assembly rather than just the bulb.

Filed: Feb 2026

Your 2022 Ford Explorer is subject to a fuel system recall (NHTSA Campaign 25V455000), but the repair parts aren't available yet. Your dealer has confirmed the fix isn't ready, which has prevented you from using the vehicle for its intended purpose as a driver's education car. The manufacturer hasn't been notified of the delay, though you haven't experienced an actual fuel system failure. Once parts become available, Ford will need to inspect and potentially replace fuel system components.

NHTSA #: 11715548

Filed: Jan 2026

Your 2022 Ford Explorer stalled without warning while driving at 35 mph, though you noticed the engine sputtering beforehand. A dealer diagnosed a failed fuel pump, which is part of an ongoing recall (NHTSA Campaign 25V455000), but the replacement part wasn't available at the time. The repair will likely involve replacing the fuel pump assembly in your fuel tank.

highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Jan 2026

Your alternator pulley may be rubbing against a wire harness, wearing through the protective insulation and exposing bare wires. This could potentially cause an electrical short or loss of charging power. The fix will likely involve repositioning or replacing the alternator pulley, and possibly repairing or replacing the damaged wire harness.

NHTSA #: 11710886
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Jan 2026

Your alternator pulley appears to be rubbing against an electrical harness, which has worn through the insulation and exposed the wiring underneath. While driving on the interstate, your vehicle suddenly pulled sharply to the left and hit the guardrail, then swerved right and stopped in traffic. Your vehicle jerked abnormally while driving without any warning lights appearing on the dashboard. When you took it to the dealer, they found a low battery and an unknown transmission part that had failed, but the vehicle remained unrepaired. Your third-row power seat in your 2022 Ford Explorer stopped working properly after normal use. The seat frame failed and won't stay locked in either the upright or folded position — it springs back no matter which position you try to keep it in. Your panoramic sunroof's sunshade has sagged and now hangs down far enough to partially block your rear window and interfere with your rearview mirror visibility. This reduced rear visibility creates a safety concern when you need to check traffic behind your vehicle. Other owners have reported the same failure with the sunshade mechanism or clips. The fix will likely involve replacing or repairing the sunshade clips or the entire sunshade assembly to restore proper clearance and visibility.

Your panoramic sunroof shade stopped working properly, making it hard to see out. After the dealership replaced the motors, the sunroof wouldn't close fully and you had to force it shut. The dealership says both motors and the track are broken and need replacement, with repairs costing $3,500–$3,900. This is happening on equipment you've rarely used.

Your instrument cluster display gets foggy, making it hard to see your speed while driving. Your infotainment screen and backup camera intermittently malfunction, reducing your rear visibility. You've also experienced fuel contamination that required dealership repair, and your rear HVAC vents don't provide airflow to the back seats. Despite four separate dealership visits, these problems continue or new issues keep appearing, leaving you concerned about the vehicle's safety.

The headliner (interior fabric covering) above your panoramic sunroof has come loose on both sides, which is blocking your view in the rearview mirror. This obstruction could affect your ability to see behind you while driving. The fix will likely involve reattaching or replacing the loose headliner material.
