2015 Ford Escape Steering Problems

Electric power steering intermittently loses communication with module. It's very dangerous. Just driving straight down the road or making a turn it cuts out and it's like a ghost grabs the wheels and jerks you off the road or into oncoming traffic. I've hit guardrails and many curbs, luckily no oncoming traffic. This should be a serious recall if I've ever seen one. One of the most dangerous malfunctions I've ever experienced and I'm a technician.

The car has on multiple occasions suddenly reported a "steering assist fault". When this happens you lose power steering. The steering wheel basically locks up and is more difficult than typical power steering loss.

Suddenly while driving and making a right turn the steering locked up, the car jerked to the left into oncoming traffic. The "steering assist needs service" indicator light on the dash came on and then went off. As I looked for a safe place to pull over the car continually jerked from right to left and I had to keep pulling on the wheel to keep it straight.

After driving the car for about 1.5 hours, we stopped at a convenience store. When we restarted the car, an error message appeared on the drivers information screen that said: "steering assist fault service required" (please see attached photos) and the vehicle had lost power steering. This made the vehicle extremely difficult to drive but we were fortunately very close to our destination.

Vehicle in park, in parking lot, started, notification came up on screen " steering assist fault service required" locked up so tight I couldn't move my wheels at all. If my car were to do this on the highway and a high speed I would end up crashing. The cost to fix this issue is around $2,400.00

On 09/05/2020, I encountered the "steering assist fault - service required" error message, resulting in loss of power assist to the steering mechanism. This is the same issue attributed to safety recall# 19s26 pertaining to similar vehicles (ford edge, etc) of this model year.

After getting gas in car wife started car and attempted to pull from gas pump. Steering was hard to steer and information light illuminated.(Steering assist fault Service required). This by some may not be considered a safety issue, but if it happens in heavy traffic this could be very serious to other drivers around you. Reading all the reports and seeing the other model years ford has recalled for steering. I believe that ford should issue a recall or at least reimburse owners for the cost of replacement.

While turning left from a stop sign, the steering wheel locked, causing the vehicle to veer into the lane of oncoming traffic. The driver yanked the steering wheel hard to the right and the vehicle returned to the correct lane. This happened again on 7/31/15 while making a right hand turn.

Rack and pinion went out at 66,000 miles. I have send reviews on this make and model that this is a problem. I have talked to multiple mechanics who have adv this is an electric problem in these cars and with different years.

On several occasions I've lost the power steering when the car is in DRIVE making it almost impossible to steer. Thankfully I was going so slow I was able to get the car to a safe spot but this could be extremely dangerous if it happens at highway speeds. According to the Ford Escape forums this is a known issue but it has still failed to become a recall.

Our 2015 Ford Escape stearing has locked up on two occasions, around July 7, 2021. Milage is about 65,000 miles. We were just leaving the house and it was while we were in the driveway.

My 2015 ford escape was parked in the parking lot where my work located. I have no problem turning the engine on; however, when started backing up, the steering wheel was so hard to maneuver. I tried turning to the left or right turn but it is like hustling and fighting a muscled man.

My step daughter was parallel parking with her uncle and the vehicle would not turn so her uncle go in the driver seat and it was fine for about a minute and it would not turn for him. So they turned the vehicle off for 20 minutes and then it was fine. I am glad they were driving slow in a practice area for parallel parking.
