When driving, the gas pedal will get stuck down and you will not be able to apply more pressure to the pedal to accelerate. This often happens when I go to change gear and then go back to the gas pedal to accelerate again. This typically will only happen from time to time but today it occurred every time I went to change gears. I had to pull over on the highway because I was unable to keep up with traffic and the weather was quite snowy and it was unsafe for me to try to drive without keeping speed with traffic.

Having issue with throttle body and or controller. Break takes time to respond and is stiff. When on an incline road, the car rolls backwards before accelerating forward. The rolled back at stop signs on inclined roads and inclined parking lots. The car shows no warming lights. The car has issues accelerating and decelerating. The car has rolled back while another car was behind it. The car at some instances has come to almost a halt while driving at 70 mph on the highway. While displaying no warming signals. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? This type of issue has been confirmed by the dealership and has been recalled for some ford escapes but not all. The car has been inspected by a technician. The transmission has been rebuild but that did not work so a new transmission was placed inside yet this did not resolve anything. The car has been having these issues for some years.

AT TIMES BEFORE ACCELERATION, THE ACCELERATOR GETS STUCK. THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO GO UNLESS THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHEN I AM IN TRAFFIC AND IT HAS HAPPENED. THE STICKING HAPPENS EITHER AT A STOP SIGN, TRAFFIC LIGHT, OR SIMPLY JUST LEAVING OUT OF A PARKING LOT. SOMETIMES IT MAY HAPPEN IF I AM COMING OUT OF A TURN. ITS SCARY WHEN I AM ON A BUSY HIGHWAY, STREET, OR ON/OFF RAMP AND THERE IS OTHER TRAFFIC SPEEDING BEHIND ME. I CAN NOT IDENTIFY THE PART THAT IS CAUSING THIS. IT MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OF THE VEHICLE. THIS HAPPENS QUITE OFTEN SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM A FAMILY MEMBER IN JULY. MOST RECENT WAS ON 12/29/2020.

RANDOMLY THE CAR WILL 'STALL' TO TO SPEAK EVEN THOUGH IT IS AN AUTOMATIC AND NOT A 5-SPEED. WHEN I SAY STALL I AM REFERRING TO WHEN I AM STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN, RED LIGHT, YIELDING TO TURN, ETC - WHEN I GO TO HIT THE GAS THE RPM'S REV UP HIGH AND THE CAR SPEED IS VERY LOW AND AT A ROLLING SPEED - EVEN THOUGH I PUSH DOWN ALL OF THE WAY IN ORDER TO GET THE CAR TO SPEED UP TO AVOID BEING STRUCK MY OTHER VEHICLES WHEN TURNING. THE CAR WILL THEN REGAIN ALL SPEED AT ONCE - INSTEAD OF GRADUALLY. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES WHILE I AM TRYING TO MERGE ONTO AN ONCOMING INTERSTATE RAMP OR AM AT A RED LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. I HAVE MISSED BEING HIT THUS FAR BUT HAVE HAD A FEW CLOSE CALLS. I HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND HAVE TAKEN IT TO SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS AND AUTO MECHANIC SHOPS THAT HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DETERMINE AN ISSUE WITH THE CAR. THEY HAVE READ THE CHECK ENGINE CODE AND HAVE FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR.

THE CONTACT CALLED SHIMMERS FORD (10401 WOODCREST DR NW, COON RAPIDS, MN 55433, (612) 424-7648) AND DIXON FORD (489 E 2ND ST, DIXON, IL 61021, (815) 288-3366) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND TRANSFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE NHTSA HOTLINE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 196,370.

FORD ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY (ETB) ISSUE MY 2008 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID HAS BEEN INTERMITTENTLY EXPERIENCING ISSUES RELATED TO AN ILL-DESIGNED ETB SINCE 2010 (WHEN WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE). IN THE PAST 5 YEARS, THE FREQUENCY OF ISSUE OCCURRENCE HAS PROGRESSIVELY INCREASED. CURRENT RATE OF OCCURRENCE IS 3 - 6 TIMES PER WEEK. RANDOMLY THE VEHICLE GOES INTO "LIMP MODE" WHILE DRIVING, WHERE THE ENGINE SHUTS DOWN TO NEARLY ZERO POWER. DASHBOARD DISPLAYS "PULL OVER SAFELY". IF THIS OCCURS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC (WHICH IS MANY TIMES THE CASE ON OUR LOS ANGELES FREEWAYS), THERE IS NO WAY TO PULL OVER SAFELY WITH NEARLY ZERO ENGINE POWER. THE VEHICLE IS LITERALLY STRANDED IN FREEWAY TRAFFIC UNTIL THE ETB IS RESET. THE VEHICLE'S IGNITION MUST BE TURNED OFF AND BACK ON TO RESET THE ETB. THIS FAULTY ETB PART ACROSS MANY FORD MODELS FOR 10+ YEARS IS PUTTING VEHICLE OWNERS' SAFETY AT HIGH RISK. FORD SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL OF ALL VEHICLES WITH THESE ILL-DESIGNED, FAULTY ETBS. VEHICLE OWNERS SHOULD NOT BE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACEMENT OF A PART WHICH IS CLEARLY FAULTY IN ITS DESIGN.

A RED WARNING LIGHT WILL COME ON WITH "STOP SAFELY NOW" AND THE CAR WILL QUICKLY SLOW DOWN. IT WILL GO REALLY SLOW REGARDLESS OF STEPPING ON THE GAS. ONCE I PULL OVER I HAVE T STOP THE CAR AND PUT IT IN PARK THEN TURN IT BACK ON. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY WHEN I AM ON THE FREEWAY OR ON THE BRIDGE (I WORK IN SAN FRANCISCO).

I HAVE OWNED THIS ESCAPE FOR ONLY ABOUT 9 MONTHS. I HAVE HAD MANY SPORADIC ISSUES WITH THE GAS PEDAL. THE GAS PEDAL HAS STUCK A FEW TIMES AND I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO PRESS DOWN ON THE PEDAL. IT SEEMS TO ACT UP WORSE WHEN THE WEATHER GETS COLDER. I HAVE HAD A FEW INSTANCES WHERE I WAS DRIVING AND WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE AND HAD TO PUT MY VEHICLE IN PARK AND KEEP PRESSING DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL UNTIL IT FINALLY ALLOWED ME TO ACCELERATE AND MOVE FORWARD. WHEN THE PEDAL LOCKS UP IT IS LIKE PRESSING AGAINST A WALL AND THERE IS NO GIVE IN THE PEDAL BUT WHEN IT DOES FINALLY PRESS DOWN IT CAUSES A HIGH ACCELERATION AND CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO LAUNCH FORWARD. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SCARY SITUATION WHEN YOU ARE IN TRAFFIC AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN CAN'T DRIVE YOUR CAR. THANKFULLY I HAVE NOT BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE BUT I FEEL IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNLESS THIS ISSUE IS FIXED. AFTER DOING A BIT OF RESEARCH I SEE THAT THERE ARE MANY OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD SIMILAR ISSUES WITH THIS MAKE. IT IS VERY UNSAFE AND I AM ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT BEING STRANDED OR HAVING THIS CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. AS A MOTHER OF A 4 YEAR OLD THIS IS DEFINITELY A SCARY ISSUE TO HAVE! I LOVE MY ESCAPE AND WOULD LOVE TO KEEP IT BUT I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT LIKE THIS. UPON ACCELERATING ON AN ON RAMP, THE SHIFTING DID NOT WORK PROPERLY. IT WILL NOT EASILY SHIFT FROM 1ST GEAR TO 2ND GEAR. I HAD SOMEONE PUT A COMPUTER READER ON THE TRUCK AND IT SAID IT WAS A GEAR SHIFT RATIO FOR GEAR #2. THE OUT TAKE SENSOR WAS REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE, HOWEVER THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. I AM ABLE TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND RESTART IT. IT HAS ALSO, ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS LURCHED FORWARD FROM A STOP OR ROLLING STOP WHEN I HIT THE GAS. FROM READING OTHER OWNERS COMPLAINTS IT SOUNDS IDENTICAL TO THE THROTTLE BODY CONTROL ISSUE SO MANY SEEM TO BE HAVING. I CAN'T AFFORD TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT AT THIS POINT, AND DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT BUT I HAVE NO OTHER VEHICLE. I DID CALL FORD BUT THEY DON'T RECOGNIZE MY VIN UNDER THE "CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM" THEY HAVE FOR SO MANY OTHER OF THEIR VEHICLES HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE! AGAIN, I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT BUT HAVE NO CHOICE, SO I WANTED PUBLIC RECORD OF THE ISSUE IN CASE IT SHUTS OFF ON ME AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND I DIE IN AN ACCIDENT, SO MY SPOUSE AND CHILDREN HAVE A RECORD THAT I BROUGHT THE KNOWN ISSUE TO FORD BUT THEY DID NOTHING.

THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE PREVIOUSLY AND NOW IT SEEMS TO BE ON ME OR RISK BEING KILLED DUE TO THIS SAFETY ISSUE. I TOOK IT TO ANDY MOHR FORD AND WAS TOLD IT NEEDS A NEW ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY, WHICH IS A 600.00 REPAIR. I BOUGHT MY ESCAPE USED SO THERE IS NO WARRANTY NOR COULD I AFFORD THIS REPAIR. I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE AND FOUND A RECALL FOR THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY, BUT WAS TOLD BY ANDY MOHR, THE RECALL DOESN'T APPLY TO MY SPECIFIC BUILD. I THEN CONTACTED FORD CORPORATE AND OPENED A CLAIM WITH THEM, I WAS TOLD THEY WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT ( BECAUSE IT'S A MANUFACTURES DEFECT AND A SAFETY ISSUE )AND WAS REFERRED BACK TO ANDY MOHR THIS TIME I SPOKE WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE MANAGER AND TOLD THE SANE THING, THAT BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE A WARRANTY,, THE REPAIR ISN'T COVETED AND I'M THEREFORE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF REPAIR. BY THE GRACE OF GOD I WAS ABLE TO COAST ACROSS 5 LANES OF TRAFFIC TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE. I WAS ANXIOUS TO GET HOME TO FEED THE DOGS, AND MY HUSBAND WAS OUT OF TOWN, SO RATHER THAN CALL A TOW TRUCK I RESTARTED THE CAR AND KEPT GOING IN THE RIGHT-HAND LANE FOR ANOTHER 3 OR 4 MILES UNTIL THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. IT TOOK ANOTHER 2 HOURS (WITH AN 15-20 ADDITIONAL STALLING EPISODES) UNTIL BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME TO ANNAPOLIS. THROUGH THE INTERNET (AND MY HUSBAND CRAWLING UNDER THE CAR) WE HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM IS A WELL-DOCUMENTED FAULTY OEM HYBRID DRIVE TRAIN MECS COOLANT WATER PUMP. SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS IS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE THAT IS EVERY BIT AS SERIOUS AS THE GM IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEM, AND A FATAL ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. FOR A FEW MONTHS NOW, THE GAS PEDAL HAS BEEN INTERMITTENTLY STICKING IN EITHER THE FULLY DEPRESSED OR NON-DEPRESSED POSITION. THE FIRST FEW TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED, I WAS ON THE EXPRESSWAY AND TRAVELING APPROX 70 MPH. ONCE THE GAS PEDAL WAS RELEASED, I REALIZED THAT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. THE GAS PEDAL WAS LYING COMPLETELY IN THE DEPRESSED POSITION. I COULD LIFT THE GAS PEDAL WITH MY FOOT BUT IT WOULD LIMPLY FALL BACK TO THE FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE ACCELERATION CONTINUED WHEN I WENT OFF THE BRAKE. I EXITED THE HIGHWAY AND TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF. I CONTINUED TO LIFT THE GAS PEDAL AND WIGGLE IT AND IT SEEMED TO GO BACK INTO PLACE. I NOTICED OVER TIME, THAT THIS SEEMED TO HAPPEN MORE WHEN THE GAS PEDAL WAS MORE FULLY DEPRESSED, LIKE WHEN ON THE HIGHWAY. AT OTHER TIMES, THE GAS PEDAL IS STICKING IN THE RELAXED (UN-DEPRESSED) POSITION. THIS SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING DURING VERY COLD TEMPERATURES BUT CONTINUES WHILE DRIVING AND WHEN PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WILL "JUMP" FORWARD WITH THE SUDDEN RELEASE OF THE GAS PEDAL AFTER PRESSING HARD ENOUGH TO MAKE IT RELEASE. SOMETIMES IT TAKES QUITE A BIT OF PRESSURE TO MAKE IT RELEASE. I HAVE READ ABOUT A RECALL FOR THESE COMPLAINTS IN OLDER VEHICLES AND THERE ARE MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ONLINE IN THE 2008 MODEL. THIS IS A HAZARD FOR PEOPLE, AS IT HAPPENS SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING. WHEN THE GAS PEDAL WOULD DEPRESS MY CAR WOULD JOLT FORWARD LIKE TOO MUCH GAS WAS APPLIED. THE ISSUE SEEMED TO DISSIPATE IF I LET THE CAR WARM UP FOR 30 MINUTES BEFORE DRIVING. I PURCHASED A NEW THROTTLE BODY FROM COURTESY FORD FOR $278.00 INSTALLATION WAS QUOTED AS $386.00. I OPTED TO HAVE MY BROTHER INSTALL IT FOR ME. IT HAS BEEN 10 DAYS SINCE INSTALLATION AND THE ISSUE SEEMS TO BE RESOLVED. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY ISSUES SINCE REPLACING THE THROTTLE BODY BUT I STILL DO NOT TRUST THE CAR. LUCKILY, THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WE WERE ON A ONE LANE HIGHWAY, BUT THE SECOND TIME WE WERE TRAVELING IN THE HIGH SPEED LANE AND HAD TO TRY TO CROSS THREE LANES OF TRAFFIC TO PULL OVER. WHEN THE MESSAGE OCCURS THE SUV LOSES ACCELERATION. IT IMMEDIATELY DROPS YOUR SPEED TO 60 MPH AND CONTINUES TO DECELERATE AND YOU CAN'T SPEED UP IF YOU TRY. TRY CROSSING A FOUR LANE HIGHWAY WITH A SPEED LIMIT OF 70 MPH WHEN YOU CAN'T EVEN DO 60 MPH. THIS IS THE SECOND OF TWO INCIDENTS WHERE POWER WAS LOST AND THE CAR BECAME UNRESPONSIVE. FIRST, WAS ONE WEEK PRIOR DRIVING FROM LA TO SAN DIEGO AT 5PM. WE GOT A FLAT ON THE HIGHWAY IN IRVINE CA. WE PULLED OVER AND CHANGED THE TIRE BUT WHEN WE STARTED THE ENGINE IT WOULD NOT START. THE LIGHTS CAME ON BUT WITH A WARNING LIGHT TO "STOP SAFELY NOW". I THOUGHT THIS WAS FROM THE TIRE AND PRESSED THE RESET BUTTON BUT THE WARNING WOULD NOT CLEAR. WE JUMPED THE CAR ONCE AND WERE UNSUCCESSFUL, WE JUMPED IT AGAIN AND AGAIN NOTHING, WE TOWED THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC AND THE TOW TRUCK TRIED TO JUMP IT AGAIN AND THIS TIME THE LIGHTS WOULD NOT COME ON. WE JUMPED WHILE HOLDING THE BUTTON FOR THE HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY WHICH WE FOUND OUT ABOUT IN THE MANUAL BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT START. WE PAID THE TOW AND CALLED FOR A RIDE HOME. I MISSED WORK AND MY MOTHER TOOK ME BACK TO LA TO WAIT FOR THE CAR. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE BATTERY. I WAITED 8 HOURS FOR THE MECHANIC TO SAY THAT THE CAR NEEDED TO BE TAKEN OUT OF A SAFETY MODE AND THAT THIS CAN'T BE DONE MANUALLY IN THE EVENT IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THE NEXT WEEK, AFTER PULLING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY TO GO HOME SUNDAY NIGHT THE RED TRIANGLE LIGHT CAME ON AND WARNED ME TO "STOP SAFELY NOW" AND THEN I COULD NOT ACCELERATE PAST 20MPH AND THEN 10MPH AS I SLOWED TO PULL OVER. I KILLED THE ENGINE, WAITED TEN MIN. AND RESTARTED BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. THIS IS AN UNACCEPTABLE PROBLEM THAT SHOULD NOT BE REPEATED. THE FIRST INSTANCE OCCURRED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PASS ON THE FREEWAY. THE FAILURE OF THE CLIPS RESULTED IN A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER, WHICH WAS ONLY NON-LIFE THREATENING BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE RIGHT LANE. TODAY'S INSTANCE OCCURRED IN A PARKING LOT... AFTER THE CAR WAS SITTING. NO POWER WAS EXERTED ON THE PEDAL AT THE TIME OF BREAKAGE. THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECT WARRANTING RECALL AND A MORE PERMANENT AND SUITABLE REPAIR FIX.
