While driving your 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan, your vehicle suddenly entered limp mode (a protective reduced-power state) with several warning lights turning on. You were able to safely pull off the road. A mechanic diagnosed that your engine control module (ECM) needs to be replaced. The dealer mentioned a previous unknown recall repair had been performed on your vehicle.

I was driving on the highway and about to increase speed from 60mph to 65mph then the vehicle shut off. I lost power steering and ability to brake I was near an exit and was able to roll into a safe spot. Vehicle would crank but not start. I contacted AAA for tow service. When AAA arrived the vehicle started. I had it towed anyway. Since the incident the vehicle starts. I am afraid to drive. I had passengers with me that night and this vehicle (engine) failure could have resulted in multiple injuries or fatalities. I purchased this vehicle from a used car dealership in October of 2020. Within a week the vehicle broke down. It would crank but not start. The used dealership had the battery replaced then the TIPM and finally a bypass was performed on the fuel pump relay switch in December of 2020. I've had no issues of this nature since those repairs. Now I have another serious safety hazard issue.

The contact was able to pull off to the side of the road where she saw smoke emerging from the front of the vehicle. Upon exiting the vehicle, the contact opened the hood to see the fire behind the engine. The fire department was contacted and was able to extinguish the fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an impound lot. The contact has not notified a local dealer. The vehicle has not been diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was destroyed. The contact was relating the failure to an unknown recall. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.
WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY THE ENGINE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER/SPEED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE ENGINE WAS LOSING COMPRESSION IN THE CYLINDER DUE TO A DEFECTIVE LIFTER THAT CAUSES DAMAGE TO THE CAM
THESE VEHICLES HAVE AN ONGOING ISSUE OF HAVING THE CYLINDER 4 MISFIRE. YOU CAN HAVE THE SPARK PLUG, SPARK PLUG WIRE, THE COIL PACK, CYLINDER HEAD VALVE, FUEL INJECTOR, VACUUM, SHAFTS AND EVERYTHING ELSE REPLACED AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL STILL COME ON SAYING THAT THIS CYLINDER IS MISFIRING. I HAVE HEARD AND READ MANY ARTICLES THAT SAY THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES AND EVERYONE IS SURPRISED THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE. AT THIS POINT, YOUR ONLY OPTION TO HAVE A RE-MANUFACTURED ENGINE INSTALLED WHICH CAN END UP COSTING MORE THAN YOU OWE ON THE CAR WHICH MANY PEOPLE CANNOT AFFORD. HOW CAN YOU ALLOW A VEHICLE TO HAVE THIS ISSUE AND NOT HAVE A SOLUTION TO FIX IT? THIS CODE APPEARED ON MARCH 2019 AFTER A WEEK OF PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE REPLACED EVERY PART THAT WOULD CAUSE THIS ERROR CODE AND THE ONLY OPTION IT TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. THIS IS JUST NOT FEASIBLE AS THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS CAR AND SHOULD BE REPLACED. *TR
FOUND A PUDDLE OF OIL IN MY DRIVEWAY, TOOK TO MECHANIC, INFORMED ME THE ENGINE OIL FILTER HOUSING WAS BROKEN, AND HE HAD 10 OF THESE RECENTLY. ALSO TOLD ME WHEN HE CONTACTED DEALER FOR PARTS, THEY SAID THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE, THATS WHY THEY KEEP A LOT IN STOCK.
VAN DOESNT ALWAYS START, TAKING MANY TRIES TO TURN OVER. HAS BEEN TO DODGE AND OTHER MECHANIC SEVERAL TIMES. BEEN TOLD THAT THE TIPM/ FUEL PUMP RELAY IS THE ISSUE. VAN HAS SHUT OFF INTERMITTENTLY ON THE HIGHWAY ON TWO OCCASIONS.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE WARRANTY EXTENSION FOR THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT AND THE REPAIR ONLY COVERED 150 MILES AND 10 YEARS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 153,000.

A BYSTANDER ASSISTED WITH JUMPSTARTING THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT NOTICED AN ABNORMAL POPPING NOISE AND, WITHIN SECONDS, FLAMES APPEARED UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. OVER THE LAST 6 MONTHS WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED THE FOLLOWING ISSUES: ALL HAVE BEEN A STOPPED POSITION. 3 TIMES THE VAN WOULD NOT START. IT WOULD NOT TURN OVER. THE VAN HAS STARTED TO STALL ON REGULAR BASIS. THE VAN TAKES 2 TO 4 ATTEMPTS TO START. ON OCTOBER 17, 2018, THE VAN WOULD NOT START AT ALL. WE HAD THE VAN TOWED. THEY STATED THERE WAS NO PRESSURE TO THE FUEL PUMP. $900 DOLLARS LATER, THEY STATE THE VAN IS READY. WE GO TO PICK IT UP. THE VAN WOULD NOT START FOR 3 ATTEMPTS. THEN THE VAN STARTED WITH A DIFFERENT KEY. DROVE IT FOR 4 MINUTES AND THEN PARK AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. WENT TO START IT AGAIN, IT KEPT STALLING. IT STALLED ABOUT 5 TIMES. WE SWITCHED BACK TO THE FIRST KEY THAT WOULD NOT START THE CAR. IT ACTUALLY STARTED TWICE. WE LEFT THE VAN WITH THE AUTO REPAIR PLACE. THEY STATED THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH THE VAN. WE GOT IT BACK ON OCTOBER 18TH. IT HAS ONLY STARTED ONE TIME SINCE THEN THE FIRST TRY. IT HAS STALLED OCCASIONALLY SINCE THEN. ONCE ON OCT 21ST, THE BRAKING SYSTEM DID NOT ENGAGE WHILE THE VAN WAS BEING BACK OUT. ONCE BEFORE THE ISSUES STARTED TO HAPPEN, THE GAS PUMP DID NOT STOP AND THE FUEL OVER FLOWED.
I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH STARTING MY VEHICLE. IT WANTS TO START BUT WILL NOT KICK OVER. I HAVE TO CALL A TOW TRUCK AND THEY BRING IT TO DODGE AND THEY CONTINUE TO TELL ME THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. IT STARTS AGAIN. A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS PERFORMED, BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE TECHNICIAN RECOMMENDED A MORE EXTENSIVE TEST, BUT THE CONTACT DECLINED TO PAY THE HIGH COST FOR THE TEST. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 75,000.

THE VEHICLE STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AS I WAS DRIVING, THE VEHICLE TOOK A WHILE TO START AT TIMES. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START
AS I AM DRIVING THE CAR JUST SHUTS OFF WITH NO WARNING. IT HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES BOTH ON THE HIGHWAY AND IN TOWN. I LOSE INSTRUMENTATION, POWER STEERING, AND POWER BRAKES. I HAVE HAD TO GLIED TO A STOP AND TRY AND RESTART THE VEHICLE.
IT BEGAN WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS ABOUT 6 MONTHS OLD, THE WINDOWS WOULD OPERATE ON THERE OWN, THE ELECTRONIC VEHICLE INFROMATION CENTER WOULD CHANGE ON IT'S OWN, AND LAST MONTH THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ALWAYS START, HAD TO REPLACE THE TIPM
ON 7/03/2015 MY 2011 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN WITH 46000 MILES WAS HAVING STARTING, STALLING AND IDLE ISSUES. THROTTLE BODY WAS REPAIRED BY SHOP AND REFUNDED MONEY BECAUSE CAR STILL HAD SAME ISSUES. THE MECHANIC SAID TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE IT WAS NOT KICKING OUT ANY CODES I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD TO WAIT FOR AN APPT UNTIL AUG 4TH. THE CAR WAS ACTING UP SO I WENT IN WITHOUT AN APPOINTMENT ON 07/21/15 THEY SAID BECAUSE THE ISSUE WAS SO INTERMITTENT THAT I WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE THE CAR FOR A FEW DAYS. ON 07/22/15 THE DEALERSHIP CALLED AND SAID THEY FOUND TWO ISSUES WITH THE VAN 1ST IT NEEDED THE LEFT CYLINDER HEAD REPLACED AND 2ND THE TIPM UNIT WAS BAD. THE GOOD NEWS WAS THE CYLINDER HEAD WHICH WOULD HAVE COST $2000 WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE BAD NEWS WAS THE TIPM ( TOTALLY INTEGRATED POWER MODULE) WAS GOING TO COST $1100 TO FIX. THE WHOLE POINT OF BUYING A NEWER CAR WAS TO NOT HAVE THESE HUGE REPAIR BILLS. BUT IN ONE SHOT THIS VAN JUST COST $3600 IN REPAIRS THAT IS JUST INSANE, WHO HAS THIS KIND OF MONEY LAYING AROUND. THE SECOND THIS TIPM UNIT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH A LOT OF OTHER CARS MANUFACTURED BY CHRYSLER ARE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE. I COULD NOT IMAGINE BEING STRANDED SOMEWHERE WITH MY FIVE CHILDREN OR GOD FORBID STALLING OUT WHILE DRIVING IT COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. THIS TIPM SHOULD BE RECALLED NOT HAPPY WITH OUR CHOICE IN THIS VEHICLE ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE WRONG WITH THIS CAR I HAVE A HEAD AND TAIL LIGHT THAT ARE GETTING WATER INTO THEM. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND MY CAR JUST STOPPED RUNNING. I HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHICH IS VERY DIFFICULT BECAUSE THE POWER STEERING DOESN'T WORK ONCE IT DIES. I HAD JUST LEFT MY HOUSE, HADN'T DROVE 1/2 MILE. I ALSO TOOK MY VEHICLE THIS MORNING TO HAVE THE BATTERY, ALTERNATOR AND STARTER CHECKED BECAUSE IT HAS A TENDENCY TO NOT WANT TO START. IT WILL JUST MAKE THE NOISE LIKE IT'S TURNING OVER AND TAKE ABOUT 5-6 TRIES BEFORE IT WILL TURN OVER. PLEASE INCLUDE 2011 MODELS IN YOUR IGNITION RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT FROM THERE VEHICLE DYING WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. VAN TRIES TO START BUT JUST CAN'T TURN OVER. IT STALLED WHILE TRYING TO PULL OUT IN TRAFFIC. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY FIRST TOLD ME IT WAS THE ALTERNATOR. WHEN I TRIED TO LEAVE THE VAN WOULDN'T START. THEY TRIED TO JUMP START IT AND IT WOULDN'T WORK. THEY ASKED ME TO LEAVE IT OVER NIGHT. THE NEXT DAY I RECEIVE A CALL FROM THE DEALER. THEY TELL ME NOT ONLY IN MY ALTERNATOR BAD BUT SO IS MY FUEL PUMP. I TELL THEM WE WILL COME GET IT TO MOVE IT OUT SIDE. 4 HOURS LATER I GET IN THE VAN TURN THE KEY AND IT STARTS. I DRIVE THE VAN HOME AND IT STARTS THE NEXT MORNING BUT NOT AT LUNCH. THIS VAN HAS LEFT ME AND MY FAMILY STRANDED SO MANY TIMES I COULD CRY. WE WERE PULLING OUT OF A PARKING LOT WHEN THE MOTOR STARTED MAKING A GRINDING SOUND. WE DROVE IT STRAIGHT HOME AND THE NEXT MORNING TOOK IT TO A LOCAL SHOP TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. THEY STATED THE SCREWS THAT WERE HOLDING THE ENGINE TO THE MOUNT HAD BEEN SHEARED OFF ON ONE SIDE AND THE ENGINE HAD FALLEN ONTO THE FRONT AXEL. THE SCREWS ON THE OTHER SIDE WERE COMPLETELY STRIPPED AND WERE ALSO IN THE PROCESS OF BEING SHEARED IN HALF. THE MECHANIC STATED HE FELT THIS WAS DUE TO THE ENGINE MOUNT SCREWS NOT BEING PROPERLY TIGHTENED AT THE FACTORY. WE TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL DODGE DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE HOW THIS HAD HAPPENED BECAUSE THE SCREWS WERE SHEARED OFF BUT THEY WOULD NOT CLAIM ANY FAULT. THEY ALSO STATED IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER OUR WARRANTY BECAUSE IT'S NOT PART OF THE POWER-TRAIN. THE VEHICLE IS ONLY THREE YEARS OLD AND TO HAVE THE MOTOR FALL OUT DURING DRIVING DOES NOT SEEM LIKE STANDARD WEAR AND TEAR. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN ANY KIND OF ACCIDENT OR COLLISION AND HAS HAD ALL THE APPROPRIATE PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE AS OUTLINED BY DODGE. *TR

THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS INDICATING THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE RECURRED OFTEN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO STATED THAT THERE WAS NO FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE FAILURE FOR THIS MODEL, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 34,110.
WHEN STARTING, THE ENGINE OCCASIONALLY MAKES A RATTLING NOISE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND AFTER STATING THAT NO CODES WERE CAPTURED, THEY CLEARED THE CODE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN SO I TOOK IT BACK AND THEY REPLACED THE CAM POSITION SENSOR, WHICH THEY SAID WOULD FIX IT. IT DIDN'T AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CONTINUES TO COME ON WITH A RATTLING AT THE START WHICH NOW OCCURS MORE FREQUENTLY. NOW THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT COMES ON AT THE START AND OCCASIONALLY WHEN DRIVING AT ROAD SPEEDS AND DRY CONDITIONS. THE VAN LOSES POWER AND IS SLOW TO ACCELERATE. I HAVE TO PULL OVER WHEN DRIVING, OR IF IT OCCURS AT STARTING, I HAVE TO SHUT THE VAN DOWN AND RESTART THE VAN AND THIS CORRECTS THE PROBLEM. THE NEXT TIME IT OCCURS, I WILL JUST DRIVE IT TO THE DEALER AND SHOW THEM BECAUSE THEY DON'T SEEM TO BELIEVE ME OR THEY TELL ME THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. I SEE THAT I AM NOW NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT THIS IS HAPPENING TOO. *TR
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IN EARLY DECEMBER. DEALER RESET THE ERROR CODE AND SAID IT WAS PROBABLY NOTHING. LIGHT CAME BACK ON A FEW DAYS LATER SO WE BROUGHT BACK TO THE DEALER - THE CONSULTED WITH CHRYSLER AND REPLACED THE CAM PHASERS AND SAID THAT SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. WITHIN A COUPLE OF DAYS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT BOTH CAME ON AND THE CAR LOST ALL ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AT 70MPH, GAS PEDAL TO THE GROUND DID NOTHING AND CAR COASTED TO 50MPH BEFORE IT WOULD LURCH FORWARD AND COAST BACK DOWN AND EVENTUALLY CORRECTED ITSELF BUT LIGHTS REMAINED ON. DEALER CONSULTED WITH CHRYSLER AGAIN AND THEY REPLACED THE CAM PHASER SENSORS AND SAID THAT SHOULD FIX IT. WITHIN A FEW DAYS SAME THING HAPPENED, DRIVING ON HIGHWAY, CHECK ENGINE AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT TURNED ON AND CAR LOST ALL ACCELERATION AND COASTED DOWN TO 50MPH AND WOULD LURCH FORWARD AND THEN COST DOWN - RPMS WOULDN'T GO ABOVE 1300RPM AND COULDN'T GET ACCELERATION BACK. TOOK CAR BACK TO DEALER (FORTUNATELY WAS ONLY A FEW MILES FROM THE DEALER) AND THEY HAD IT FOR 2 WEEKS AND CHRYSLER RECOMMENDED REPLACING BOTH WIRING HARNESSES AND THAT SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. WITHIN A WEEK, SAME PROBLEM, DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AT 70MPH - CHECK ENGINE AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT COMES ON, NO ABILITY TO ACCELERATE OR MAINTAIN SPEED, CAR COASTED DOWN TO 50MPH AND WOULD LURCH FORWARD AND COST BACK DOWN. RETURNING CAR TO DEALER AGAIN (MID FEBRUARY). QUITE DANGEROUS TO (REPEATEDLY) LOOSE ACCELERATION AND WITH NO ABILITY TO MAINTAIN SPEED WHEN DRIVING AT 70MPH ON A HIGHWAY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY ADVISED THAT THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE AND THEY RESET THE SYSTEM. LATER, WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY DECELERATED BEFORE STALLING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND IT WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE SHE WAS ADVISED THAT THE CAM SENSOR HAD MALFUNCTIONED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. IN ADDITION, THE DRIVER SIDE REAR THIRD ROW SEAT BELT SUDDENLY LOCKED WITH A PASSENGER IN THE SEAT. WHILE TRYING TO LOOSEN THE SEATBELT, IT ONLY CONTINUED TO TIGHTEN AROUND THE PASSENGER. THE SEAT BELT WAS EVENTUALLY CUT AND THE PASSENGER RECEIVED MINOR BRUISES TO THE ABDOMEN AS A RESULT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AGAIN WHERE THEY REPLACED THE SEAT BELT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 1,500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 4,200.
