SERVICE BRAKES

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles. The affected vehicles had brake booster shields installed under a previous campaign to prevent water from entering the brake booster and limiting braking ability. This recall is to verify that the brake booster shield installation was performed properly.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake booster shield, correcting the installation as necessary, free of charge. The recall began November10, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T59.

SERVICE BRAKES

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles manufactured from January 5, 2010, through September 8, 2013. The subject vehicles have a brake booster with a center shell that may corrode and allow water to get inside.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will add a water diverter shield to the booster after the booster has been tested to confirm it can hold an acceptable amount of vacuum pressure. If the booster inspection confirms an unacceptable loss of vacuum pressure, the booster will be replaced. Repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's recall campaign number is P14.

Your rear brake pads are wearing out prematurely—they've worn to a point requiring replacement after only 6,000 miles of driving since you bought the car, with the vehicle having just under 25,000 total miles. A service technician rated the brake condition as a 3 (indicating significant wear) and recommended new brake pads. The fix will involve having a mechanic inspect the rear brake system and replace the worn brake pads, and possibly examining why they're wearing faster than normal.

THERE IS NO WARNING PRIOR TO VEHICLE SHUTTING DOWN. IT HAPPENS SUDDENLY AND RANDOMLY. IT ALWAYS APPEARS TO BE WHEN SLOWING DOWN TO EXIT A ROAD OR TAKE A TURN. I HAVE TO COAST THE VEHICLE UNTIL IT STOPS AND PUT IT INTO PARK OR NEUTRAL TO START IT AGAIN. IT WORKS FINE UNTIL THE NEXT TIME. IT HAS HAPPENED SIX TIMES IN THE LAST MONTH.

TRAFFIC SLOWING DOWN IN FRONT OF ME, I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT SLOWLY TO FLOOR AND THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK CAUSING ME TO HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, REAPPLIED THE BRAKES AND THEY DID WORK CAUSING ME TO HIT THAT CAR AGAIN. THOUGHT THAT MAYBE MY FOOT WAS DEPRESSING BOTH THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE SO II USED MY LEFT FOOT, RESULT THE SAME. I DID THIS MANY MORE TIMES AND THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK. I APPLIED THE PARKING BRAKE AND PULLED OFF TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD WHEN I WAS SURE IT WAS SAFE. THIS HAPPENED IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE, I MANAGED TO AVOID HITTING ANY OF THE WORKERS AND THE 3 TRUCKS THAT THEY WERE USING. ONE OF THE WORKERS ASKED WHAT HAPPENED, I EXPLAINED TO HIM AND HE TRIED THE BRAKES, THEY WENT WERE SPONGY AND WENT SLOWLY TO THE FLOOR. CHECKED TO SEE IF THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE TO SEE IF SHE HAD ANY INJURIES, SHE SAID SHE WAS ALRIGHT. THE IMPACT WAS NOT HARD BECAUSE WE WERE BOTH GOING THE SPEED. CALLED THE MICHIGAN STATE POLICE (REFER TO INCEDENT # 31-10985-16 AND CRASH REPORT S/N 228890) NO TICKET ISSUED. CALLED FOR WRECKER TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE NEAREST CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM DEALERSHIP. THE DEALER WAS GARBER, 5330 BAY ROAD, SAGINAW MICHIGAN 48604, PHONE # 989-399-8550, SERVICE ADVISOR LARRY COOK. THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM, THEY CONTACTED CHRYSLER ENGINEERING. LEFT VEHICLE OVE NIGHT, CAUSE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. BRAKES WORKED FINE, BROUGHT VEHICLE HOME AFRAID TO DRIVE IT AGAIN.

I THEN CONTACTED CHRYSLER GROUP VIA THE 800 NUMBER ON THE WEB SITE AND WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKE PARTS ARE BEING SENT IN "CONTROLLED QUANTITIES"? THE PERSON I SPOKE WITH ANSWERED MY QUESTIONS FROM A SCRIPT AND COULD NOT EXPLAIN TO ME WHY A RECALL CONCERNING BRAKES IS BEING HANDLED ON A ONE TO ONE BASIS. HE TOLD ME WHEN THE DEALER VERIFIES THAT THE RECALL HAS BEEN SATISFIED ON ONE VEHICLE ANOTHER PART IS THEN SENT TO THE DEALER FOR THE NEXT AFFECTED VEHICLE. MY QUESTION/COMPLAINT IS WHY ARE THE PARTS BEING RATIONED FOR SUCH A VITAL PART OF SAFE VEHICLE OPERATION AND NOW THAT THIS RECALL IS WELL INTO ITS FOURTH MONTH WHEN SHOULD I EXPECT THE REPAIRS TO BE COMPLETED? WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE SNOWY AND ICY DURING MY DAILY COMMUTE. WHILE IN ROUTE TO MY PLACE OF WORK I WAS DRIVING DOWN A MILD INCLINE TOWARD A STOP LIGHT WHICH HAD JUST TURNED RED. I WAS TRAVELING AT A LOWER SPEED (30 TO 35 MPH) DUE TO DRIVING CONDITIONS. DUE TO THOSE ICY CONDITIONS MY ABS IMMEDIATELY KICKED IN AS I APPROACHED THE STOP LIGHT. FOR A MATTER OF SECONDS I HAD THE BRAKE PEDAL FIRMLY DEPRESSED CONTINUOUSLY ALL THE WAY TO THE STOP LIGHT AND I COULD HEAR THE TYPICAL ABS NOISE UNTIL MY VEHICLE STOPPED. ONCE TRAFFIC RESUMED I COULD FEEL A DIFFERENCE IN THE PRESSURE NEEDED TO APPLY AND ACTIVATE THE BRAKES. AS I CONTINUED DRIVING THE PRESSURE I NEEDED TO APPLY FOR BRAKING INCREASED DRAMATICALLY BUT WITH LESS AND LESS RESPONSE FROM THE BRAKES. AFTER ONLY 1 ADDITIONAL TRIP I REALIZED THE NEED FOR SERVICE WORK AND SCHEDULED SERVICE. ON MY SECOND TRIP AFTER THE INITIAL INCIDENT BRAKING BECAME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND THE DASHBOARD BRAKE WARNING LAMP CAME ON. MY THIRD TRIP WAS TO SERVICE WHICH WAS SCHEDULED AND THE BRAKE BOOSTER WAS FOUND TO BE THE ISSUE. INITIALLY THE SUPPLYING DODGE DEALER HAD TOLD THE REPAIR FACILITY WHICH DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE THAT THE PART WAS UNAVAILABLE BUT ORDERS WERE BEING SHIPPED SOON TO FILL BACK ORDERS. THIS SUGGESTED THAT THE BRAKE BOOSTER MAY BE PRONE TO SOME TYPE OF FAILURE. ONLINE RESEARCH AND CHAT INDICATED THIS TO BE A COMMONLY ADDRESSED ISSUE. I PURSUED THIS CONCERN WITH DODGE CUSTOMER SERVICE AS A SAFETY COMPLAINT WITH 2 DIFFERENT MESSAGES. THE DODGE CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THIS AS A RECOGNIZED SAFETY ISSUE BUT ONLY AS A "OUT-OF-WARRANTY CONSIDERATION. I WAS ON THE PHONE W/CO-WORKER WHO WAS BEHIND ME. I ASKED IF HE SAW MY CAR SLIDE, HE SAID YES, IT WAS DIFFICULT TO KEEP ON THE ROAD SO TOLD HIM I HAD TO GO.I DROVE TO PEORIA. I WAS GOING VERY SLOW. WENT TO SWIM MEET, THEN HEADED HOME DOWN KNOXVILLE AVE. MAYBE10 MPH, VERY CAUTIOUS, EVERYONE WAS PASSING ME. SIGNAL TURNED YELLOW, THEN RED, BUT MY CAR WOULD NOT STOP. DODGE DURANGO 2011 CREW-TRACTION DEFECT. GOT THE CAR 12/23/11. ON 1/12/12, DURING SNOW STORM. I LEFT WORK, CAR WOULD NOT STAY ON THE ROAD, SLID SIDEWAYS AS I TURNED. I WAS ON THE PHONE W/CO-WORKER WHO WAS BEHIND ME. I ASKED IF HE SAW MY CAR SLIDE, HE SAID YES, IT WAS DIFFICULT TO KEEP ON THE ROAD SO TOLD HIM I HAD TO GO.I DROVE TO PEORIA. I WAS GOING VERY SLOW. WENT TO SWIM MEET, THEN HEADED HOME DOWN KNOXVILLE AVE. MAYBE10 MPH, VERY CAUTIOUS, EVERYONE WAS PASSING ME. SIGNAL TURNED YELLOW, THEN RED, BUT MY CAR WOULD NOT STOP. ANTI-LOCK BRAKES WERE ON, CAR CONTINUED TO SLIDE. I SAW A TRUCK COMING A LONG WAY DOWN, I SLID INTO CROSS TRAFFIC, AND HIT THAT TRUCK. (I HAD PAIN IN MY SHOULDER, THE PAIN CONTINUED, & ON 3/30/12, HAD EMERGENCY SURGERY 4 RUPTURED CERVICAL SPINE. I NOW HAVE A PLATE,& 4 SCREWS IN MY NECK.)GOT THE CAR BACK, & TOOK IT TO TIRE SHOP TO PUT BETTER TIRES ON IT. WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG W/TIRES, & THEY WERE BETTER TIRES THAN THEY COULD SELL ME. THIS YEAR IN LESS THEN 1 INCH OF SNOW, THE CAR DID A 180 SLIDE ON MY DRIVE, THEN SLID INTO TRAFFIC (LEVEL SURFACE), A CAR MISSED ME BY INCHES. SLIDE EVEN IN A QUARTER INCH SNOW. DOESN'T MATTER WHO IS DRIVING IT, THEY SLIDE. I AGAIN WENT 2 A DIFFERENT TIRE PLACE. THEY WANTED TO SELL ME THE SAME TIRES, I SAID NO WAY! THEY OFFERED ALTERNATIVES. I DECIDED TO GOOGLE WHAT KIND OF TIRES WOULD BE GOOD FOR MY CAR. MUCH TO MY DISMAY, APPARENTLY NONE ARE. WHAT I FOUND, WAS THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL '11 DURANGO OWNERS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE TIRES ON THEIR CARS. SAME PROBLEMS, DIFFERENT TIRES & DIFFERENT TIRE MANUFACTURERS. THEIR CARS WILL NOT STAY ON THE ROAD WITH SNOW OR ICE EITHER. IT IS NOT THE TIRES, ITS A THE CAR! PLEASE STOP THIS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED.
