Open Safety Recalls (6)
NHTSA Campaign: 04V596000
Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:UPPER BALL JOINT
ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND PICKUP TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE (4X4), IF MOISTURE LEAKS INTO THE FRONT SUSPENSION UPPER BALL JOINT, EVACUATION OF THE LUBRICANT AND CORROSION OF THE JOINT MAY CAUSE THE JOINT TO WEAR OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. THIS COULD CAUSE A CLUNKING NOISE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION, WHICH MAY NOT ALWAYS BE HEARD BY THE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS.
Risk: EXCESSIVE WEAR IN THE UPPER BALL JOINT MAY ALLOW IT TO SEPARATE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT SUSPENSION UPPER BALL JOINTS. THIS SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN BEGAN ON DECEMBER 21, 2004. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.
NHTSA Campaign: 08E064000
Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:HUB
SKF IS RECALLING 2,805 HUB UNITS, PART NO. BR930361, SOLD AS A SERVICE PART FOR 1997-2004 DODGE DAKOTA VEHICLES AND 1999-2003 DODGE DURANGO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2-WHEEL DRIVE & REAR AXLE ABS. DUE TO A SPECIFICATION ERROR, THE ROTOR PILOT FOR THE HUB UNIT MAY BE TOO LONG. THIS RESULTS IN THE WHEEL TO NOT BE SEATED FULLY AGAINST THE HUB FLANGE FACE DURING MOUNTING.
Risk: IMPROPER SEATING OF THE WHEEL CAN RESULT IN EXCESSIVE VIBRATION, BRAKE ROTOR NOISE, DIFFICULTY REMOVING THE WHEEL AFTER INSTALLATION AND OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE, AND POSSIBLY WHEEL-END SEPARATION DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. SHOULD WHEEL-END SEPARATION OCCUR, THE DRIVER COULD LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH.
Fix: SKF WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE HUB UNITS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 5, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SKF VSM NORTH AMERICA CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-644-8999.
NHTSA Campaign: 06E024000
Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
CERTAIN REPLACEMENT K&N FUEL PERFORMANCE KITS, P/NOS. 57-1509, 57-1511, 57-1511-1, 57-1517, 57-1517-1, 57-1527, AND 57-1530. ALSO, A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THESE KITS WERE SOLD UNDER THE MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTS BRAND NAME (P/NOS. P5007069 AND P5007070). ALL KITS WERE MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 20, 1999, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 23, 2004. THESE ASSEMBLIES WERE MANUFACTURED AS REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR CERTAIN DODGE PICKUP TRUCKS AND SUVS. A SMALL PIECE OF MATERIAL FROM THE TUBE WALL COULD BE SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE THROTTLE BODY, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE THROTTLE TO BECOME JAMMED IN THE OPEN POSITION.
Risk: A JAMMED OPEN THROTTLE COULD CAUSE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OF THE VEHICLE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH OR INCREASED STOPING DISTANCES WHEN BRAKING.
Fix: K&N WILL PROVIDE OWNERS WITH A FREE REPAIR KIT ALONG WITH REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 20, 2006.
NHTSA Campaign: 06V339000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH FRONT BENCH SEATS ONLY, IF FLUID IS SPILLED FROM THE FLOOR MOUNTED CUP HOLDER, AN UNUSED CONSOLE POWER OUTLET CONNECTOR LOCATED UNDER THE SEAT MAY BECOME CONTAMINATED.
Risk: THIS MAY ALLOW DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGH RESISTIVE SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE CONNECTOR, WHICH COULD EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A FIRE.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE CONSOLE WIRING CONNECTOR FOR CORROSION, CLEAN AS REQUIRED, AND INSTALL A CAP TO PREVENT ADDITIONAL FLUID FROM CONTAMINATING THE CONNECTOR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 30, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DAIMLER CHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.
NHTSA Campaign: 02V322000
Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS:SWITCH
ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS, THE CENTRAL TIMER MODULE (CTM) HAS AN IMPROPERLY SIZED CIRCUIT BOARD TRACE THAT COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE THE RIGHT HEADLAMP LOW BEAM TO BECOME INOPERATIVE.
Risk: IF THE LIGHTS FAIL, A VISIBILITY PROBLEM COULD OCCUR, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CTM. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 23, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.
NHTSA Campaign: 04V216000
Component: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER
ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MODULE MOTOR MAY BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO WATER INTRUSION THAT COULD CAUSE INTERNAL CORROSION AND RESULT IN PARTIAL OR COMPLETE LOSS OF FRONT WINDSHIELD WIPING CAPABILITY.
Risk: DRIVER VISIBILITY COULD BE REDUCED, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT WINDSHIELD WIPER MODULE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON JULY 12, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 338)
Electrical System →3 issues
Your Durango's battery keeps draining due to an unknown electrical problem, so you've already had to replace it once. While parked with the engine off, the alarm goes off on its own and the lights flash randomly. Most concerning, the vehicle lost all power while you were driving, and now it will only restart if you shift into Neutral. The dealer indicated this would be an out-of-pocket repair. A full electrical system diagnosis and likely replacement of faulty wiring, switches, or control modules will be needed to fix this.

Your 2003 Durango is experiencing recurring engine misfires and severe electrical malfunctions that require spark plugs and ignition coils to be replaced every 50,000 miles at significant cost. You're also experiencing dangerous and unpredictable electrical issues like wipers activating on their own, lights flickering, doors locking/unlocking, windows rolling down unexpectedly, the horn blaring when turning on headlights, and random engine acceleration while driving. A mechanic has indicated the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) may be faulty, but the dealership has declined to address it due to your vehicle being outside the recall window. This will likely require diagnosis and replacement of the TIPM and related electrical components.

Your vehicle shut off without warning while you were driving at 35 mph and wouldn't restart. The vehicle had to be towed home, and the dealer couldn't determine the cause. The electrical system likely needs diagnosis to identify what prevented the engine from running.

Air Bags →2 issues
Your airbags deployed during a crash and partially burned instead of properly protecting you. According to the owner, another vehicle pulled in front of their Durango, causing a collision where the airbags exploded and caught fire. This is a Takata recall issue with documented police reports and medical records. The airbag system may need complete replacement and inspection to ensure proper safety function.

While driving your 2003 Dodge Durango at about 50 mph, the front driver's side tire suddenly collapsed, causing you to lose control. Your vehicle went down an embankment, hit two small trees, and struck a larger tree, but the airbags did not deploy during the crash. The vehicle was destroyed in the accident. The airbag system may have failed to detect the collision or activate properly.

Your A/C drain hose may be clogged or leaking, causing condensation to pool on the passenger floorboard instead of draining outside. This water buildup can damage electrical components, cause corrosion, and potentially lead to mold growth inside your car. The problem appears to be caused by poor drain hose design or a deteriorated seal that allows water into the cabin. Fixing this typically involves accessing and replacing or clearing the A/C drain hose and resealing where it enters the cabin.

Wheels,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your truck suddenly started producing white smoke with antifreeze spraying everywhere after you left work. You're unsure whether the engine seized or the head gasket failed, but either way the engine needs immediate attention. Additionally, your truck spins out when driving in the rain even though the tires appear to have good tread, which suggests a traction or suspension issue rather than tire wear. Both problems require professional diagnosis—the engine issue may need head gasket replacement or engine rebuild, and the wet-weather spinning may involve replacing suspension components or addressing brake balance.

Seats,unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
Your engine stalls when you're slowing down, stopping, or at a complete stop, causing the RPM to drop dangerously — you've nearly been rear-ended multiple times with passengers in the car. A repair shop has tried replacing hoses, valve gaskets, and performing a tune-up but hasn't solved the problem. Additionally, your front driver and passenger seats slide back and forth when braking, which is unsafe, and your engine hoses keep falling off repeatedly.

Steering →1 issue
Your steering column has a universal joint that clicks when you turn, causing your steering wheel to bind up and then suddenly release. This happens at all speeds, even while parked, and can be confusing and dangerous. The steering column could potentially separate completely if not repaired, which would cause total loss of steering control.

Electrical System, unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your 2003 Dodge Durango caught fire while parked under a carport in January 2017, destroying both the vehicle and the attached home. The fire occurred around 1:25 a.m., several hours after the vehicle was last driven. You were not notified by mail or phone about an active recall (06V339000) on your vehicle. Investigation and repair would involve a dealer inspection of the electrical system and any affected components related to the recall.

Exterior Lighting,structure,engine →1 issue
Your diagnostic scanner is showing error codes related to the central timing module and EEPROM checksum, which matches a known safety recall issue. However, your vehicle's VIN number isn't listed in the recall database, so the dealer won't perform the repair even though your car has all the specifications that should qualify for the recall. This leaves you driving a vehicle with a known manufacturing defect that you believe poses a safety risk.

Power Train →1 issue
While driving at 55 mph, your Durango's transmission suddenly downshifted to first gear without warning, then returned to normal operation on its own. The vehicle hasn't been diagnosed or repaired, and the dealer confirmed it's not subject to a recall. Dodge recommends having an authorized dealer inspect the transmission to determine what caused the unexpected downshift.

Suspension →1 issue
Your Durango is making a popping sound that you can feel through the driveshaft, and both front tires are wearing unevenly on the inside edges. A mechanic diagnosed that both upper ball joints have failed and need replacement. This uneven tire wear and popping sensation are signs that the ball joints are worn out.

Exterior Lighting →1 issue
Your interior and exterior lights are flashing rapidly on and off while driving, even though the car otherwise runs fine. This flashing happens constantly. While mechanics have suggested different causes, the exact problem hasn't been identified yet. A mechanic will need to diagnose the electrical system to find what's causing the lights to malfunction.

Electrical System,visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your vehicle randomly experiences a complete electrical system malfunction where the power door locks stop working, a "Service 4X4" warning appears on the dashboard, dome lights stay on continuously, dashboard gauges won't light up, and all exterior lights (headlights, parking lights, brake lights) fail to work. The only way to restore normal operation is to disconnect and reconnect the battery, and this problem occurs unpredictably—sometimes within a day, other times a month apart. This issue likely involves a faulty electrical component or ground connection that's causing intermittent power distribution problems.

Exterior Lighting,electrical System →1 issue
Your headlights and dashboard lights flicker on and off. A dealer diagnosed that the body control module needs to be replaced, but Dodge no longer manufactures this part. The dealer said the part could be found online and they could install it, but the repair was never completed. Fixing this will likely require purchasing a replacement body control module and having a technician install it.
