General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
Risk: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.

Component: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured April 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006, and 2006-2007 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
Risk: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly, free of charge. The recall began February 24, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14772. Note: This is an expansion of recall 14V-153 to cover additional vehicles built between April 1, 2006 and June 30, 2006.
NHTSA Campaign: 14V224000
Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on April 29, 2014, that they are recalling 56,214 model year 2007 and 2008 Saturn Aura vehicles. On May 22, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 1,074,899 model year 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured from May 16, 2003, through October 5, 2007, model year 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, and model year 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured from May 26, 2004, through September 28, 2007, and equipped with 4-speed transmissions. The total number vehicles being recalled is now 1,131,113.
Risk: If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the PARK position, the transmission may not be in PARK. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and GM dealers will replace the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 14152.

Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain replacement intermediate steering shafts sold under the Dorman, OE Solutions, and Solutions brand names, part numbers 425-167, 2425167, and 7-3074, for installation on 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, and 2007-2009 Saturn Aura vehicles. The affected steering shafts may have a yoke that inadequately supports the u-joint bearing resulting in a premature failure.
Risk: A joint bearing that fails prematurely may cause separation of the u-joint resulting in a complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will refund the purchase price or replace the steering shafts, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 991)
Steering →14 issues
Your power steering isn't working properly, and you've noticed your steering wheel shaking while driving. You believe the torque sensor is the cause, and while aware of a safety recall for this issue on 2007 Malibus, your vehicle isn't covered under it despite the known problem. A dealer refused to service it under the recall, but if the steering were to fully lock while driving on highways, it could cause a serious accident.

Your power steering assist stops working intermittently, and you'll see a "Power Steering Fault" message on the dashboard. When this happens while driving, the steering wheel becomes very hard to turn and requires excessive force to control the vehicle. Your car may have been part of a previous recall (Campaign 15V064000) for steering issues, but the problem persists.

Your power steering may fail intermittently, making the car difficult or dangerous to steer, especially at highway speeds or in wet conditions. This is caused by a failing torque sensor, and while Chevrolet previously covered this repair under a special program, that coverage has expired even though your vehicle has relatively low mileage. Fixing this will likely require replacing the torque sensor in the power steering system.

Your power steering randomly shakes, turns erratically, and cuts out even when the fluid level is full, making it dangerous to drive—especially on the highway where you suddenly lose the ability to steer. This problem happens periodically and you've noticed others have reported the same issue. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the power steering pump, hoses, or control valve to find what's causing the intermittent failure.

While driving, your power steering suddenly stopped working and the power steering warning light appeared on your dashboard, making it impossible to turn the steering wheel. You had to pull over immediately. Your Chevrolet dealer diagnosed the problem as a faulty torque sensor that needs replacement. This is the same issue covered under a safety recall for your model year, but your specific vehicle wasn't included on the recall list despite having the same year and manufacture date.

Your power steering system is malfunctioning, causing a fault warning to appear on your dashboard constantly. Occasionally, the power steering cuts out completely, making the steering wheel very difficult to turn. This could make your car dangerous to drive, especially in tight parking situations or traffic.

Your steering system locks up while driving, causing a warning light to appear. You have to restart the engine multiple times to regain steering control, and you've replaced the steering sensor 4 times without a permanent fix. When the steering does work, it's harder to turn the wheel to the left than to the right. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the steering sensor, electrical connections, or the power steering system to identify why the sensor keeps failing.

Your car's power steering system is failing intermittently, displaying a 'Power Steering Fault' message and causing the steering wheel to vibrate and become hard to turn. This happened while reversing, while driving at 60 MPH, and at other times while driving. The problem makes it difficult to maneuver your vehicle safely and requires extra effort to steer. A power steering system inspection and likely replacement of the failing component will be needed to restore normal steering function.

Your power steering intermittently locks up while driving, making it hard to turn the steering wheel. A dashboard warning appears indicating a power steering fault. Turning the engine off and back on temporarily fixes the issue, but it returns. Chevrolet has denied warranty assistance despite reports of this being a widespread problem across multiple vehicles.

Your power steering keeps cutting out during driving — it happens 5 or more times on a 10-mile trip — but comes back when you restart the engine. Chevrolet says your car was already checked for a recall on this issue and won't cover a repair, but you believe the recall should still apply since the problem persists. You're concerned about driving the car long-distance from Florida back to New Jersey without a fix.

Your car's electric power steering motor isn't working properly and you're concerned it could be dangerous. The power steering system relies on this motor to help you turn the wheel, so a failure could make steering difficult or unpredictable. A mechanic will need to test the motor and likely replace it to restore normal steering function.

Your power steering system is making the steering wheel hard to turn. This is a known issue that Chevrolet has issued a recall campaign for, but that recall apparently hasn't been applied to your vehicle yet. You should contact your Chevrolet dealer to check if your car qualifies for the recall service and have them perform any necessary repairs to restore normal power steering function.

Your power steering intermittently cuts out while driving, making the steering wheel very difficult to turn. Turning the vehicle off and back on temporarily restores power steering, but the problem returns unpredictably. This makes it frustrating to diagnose at a mechanic since the system works normally when tested, and you can't predict when the failure will occur.

While driving at 45 mph, your power steering suddenly stopped working, forcing you to pull over. After restarting the car, your steering wheel shuddered, made ticking noises, and became very hard to turn. A mechanic diagnosed that your power steering motor had failed and needed replacement, possibly related to a known steering issue recall. Fixing this will require replacing the power steering motor.

Steering,electrical System →2 issues
Your steering wheel shakes and then the dashboard displays a "POWER STEERING" warning message. When this happens, your steering wheel locks up and becomes difficult or impossible to turn, which can be dangerous while driving. The steering unlocks when you turn off the car, but the problem returns as soon as you start driving again. The issue likely involves the power steering system or its electrical controls, and may require inspection of the power steering pump, belt, or electronic control module.

Your power steering randomly locks up while driving, forcing you to turn the car off and back on while moving the wheel side to side to regain steering control. The problem happens unpredictably and has occurred multiple times in traffic, creating a serious safety hazard. Additionally, when parked, the steering wheel moves on its own and makes a screeching noise. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the power steering system, which may require replacing the steering control module, power steering pump, or electrical connections.

Air Bags →1 issue
Your car's airbag warning light turned on when you started the vehicle and stayed on continuously. This means the airbag system isn't working properly and your airbags may not deploy in a crash. The issue should be diagnosed and repaired by a technician who can read the airbag system's error codes and replace any faulty sensors or modules.

Fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your gas gauge has stopped working and hasn't been accurate for several years. You're wondering if there's a recall for this issue, as you've noticed many other Chevy Malibus seem to have the same problem. The fix would likely involve replacing the fuel gauge sending unit or fuel pump assembly, which is located in the fuel tank.
