EXTERIOR LIGHTING

SABERSPORT IS RECALLING 16,270 COMBINATION CORNER AND BUMPER LAMP ASSEMBLIES OF VARIOUS PART NUMBERS SOLD FOR USE AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE HEADLAMPS FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, "LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT." THESE LAMPS DO NOT CONTAIN THE REQUIRED AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS.

Fix: SABERSPORT WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER A FULL REFUND FOR THE NONCOMPLIANT COMBINATION LAMPS. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 11, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SABERSPORT AT 1-909-598-7589.

Both of your front headlights are dimming in both low and high beam modes and eventually burning out. When you inspected the headlights, you found that the bulb sockets had melted, likely due to faulty wiring in the headlight assembly causing excessive heat. Even after replacing the sockets with aftermarket parts, the problem came back, suggesting the underlying wiring issue wasn't resolved. The fix will likely involve inspecting and repairing or replacing the wiring harness and possibly the entire headlight assembly.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED HOWEVER, THE BRAKE LIGHTS FAILED TO ILLUMINATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKE MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. PORTER CHEVROLET (414 E CLEVELAND AVE, NEWARK, DE 19711) WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED OUT OF POCKET. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V252000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, EXTERIOR LIGHTING, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL) AS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO THE FAILURE HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SUBJECTED TO ANY RECALLS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 169,000.

THE BACKLIGHTING ON THE MAIN DASH (BEHIND THE ODOMETER, SPEEDOMETER, GAS GAUGE AND OTHER INDICATORS) FAILS TO ILLUMINATE. IT STARTED OUT AS ONLY A SMALL PART OF THE BACKLIGHTING, BUT HAS PROGRESSIVELY BECOME WORSE. WE JUST HAD THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE 3 UNRELATED RECALLS AND ASKED THEM TO "GIVE US AN ESTIMATE TO REPAIR". WHEN THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO US, THE LIGHTING FAILED TO ILLUMINATE NEARLY THE ENTIRE DASH (WORSE THEN BEFORE IT WAS IN FOR SERVICE). WE WERE TOLD THE MODULE WOULD NEED TO BE RETURNED TO THE MANUFACTURER (GM) TO BE REPAIRED/REPLACED AND THEN BE REINSTALLED AND WOULD COST OVER $350. NO IDEA HOW LONG THE CAR WOULD BE OUT OF SERVICE EITHER. THIS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE FOR NIGHT DRIVING! *JS

WHAT CAN I SAY I HAVE BEEN WRITING ABOUT THIS CAR FOR THE LONGEST. I JUST WANT TO SAY THE OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE BULBS BURNING OUT, THE DRIVER'S SEAT BREAKING AT THE WELD AND THE SEAT BELT LIGHT CONSTANTLY COMING ON IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM I'M SURE GM KNEW ABOUT THIS. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO DEAF EARS BOTH TO NHTSA AND GM. THE LAST TIME I MADE A COMPLAINT WAS IN MAY 2014 TO BOTH OF THEM ABOUT THE STEERING. GM AND NHTSA SAYS THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO SINCE THERE WAS NO RECALL. EXACTLY 2 WEEKS LATER THE CEO OF GM COMES OUT TO SAY THE MALIBU MAXX IS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL! I PAID TO HAVE MY STEERING WHEEL REPLACED IN 2007 BECAUSE OF POWER STEERING FAILURE, THE DEALER SAID I NEEDED THE STEERING COLUMN REPLACE AND I DID TO THE TUNE OF ALMOST $800. NOW A BULLETIN WAS SENT OUT TO DEALERS IN 2005 ABOUT A KEY INSERT FOR ANY CUSTOMER WHO CAME IN TO COMPLAIN ABOUT POWER STEERING FAILURE, BUT THIS WAS NOT GIVEN TO ME AS A CHOICE. THEY WERE SURE I NEEDED THE STEERING COLUMN REPLACED, SO I DID. NOW THAT MY CAR IS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND I PAID, PERHAPS, UNNECESSARILY TO HAVE MY STEERING COLUMN REPLACED AS ANYONE KNOW THIS DEFECTIVE PART IS PART OF THE STEERING GM STILL DOES NOT WANT TO REIMBURSE ME MY MONEY BACK. I BOUGHT THE CADILLAC CATERA WHICH WAS DISCONTINUED DUE TO MANY RECALLS AND BECAUSE OF ALL MY COMPLAINTS GM GAVE ME $3000 TOWARD A NEW GM CAR, WHICH I APPLIED TO THE MALIBU MAXX. I WON'T PUT MY MONEY OR GIVEN CREDIT TOWARD A GM AGAIN, I'M THROUGH AND SINCE NEARLY HALF OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS ARE GM OWNERS I AM GETTING THEM TO MAKE THEIR NEXT PURCHASE SOMETHING OTHER THAN AMERICAN MADE CARS. IN ADDITION, THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE BRIGHT ENOUGH TO SEE IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WHILE ACTIVATING THE CRUISE CONTROL AT ANY SPEED, THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. MY BRAKE LIGHTS WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE WHILE PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL. WHEN I GOT HOME I HAD MY HUSBAND STAND BEHIND THE VEHICLE WHILE I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL. NO CHANGED OCCURRED AS I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS BECAUSE OTHER DRIVERS WILL NOT KNOW WHEN I AM TRULY SLOWING DOWN OR ACTUALLY APPLYING THE BRAKE. NOW WHENEVER THE "SERVICE VEHICLE SOON" WARNING LIGHT COMES ON I KNOW THAT MY EXTERIOR BRAKE LIGHTS ARE NOT WORKING PROPERLY. SINCE FEBRUARY OF 2014 THIS HAPPENS 4 OR MORE TIMES A MONTH. I HAVE REPLACED THE FRONT TURN SIGNAL BULBS MANY TIME WITH ORIGINAL PART NUMBERS USING STANDARD BULBS, THEY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH OVER HEATING AND MELTED THE ORANGE TURN SIGNAL GLOBES INSIDE THE HEAD LIGHTS TO THE POINT THAT IT MADE HOLES IN THE TOP OF THE INNER GLOBES AND ITS YELLOWING THE INSIDE OF MY HEADLIGHT. I HAVE HEARD MANY OTHERS HAVING PROBLEMS AS WELL, I ALSO WORK FOR A COMPANY WHERE WE SERVICE CAR, IT IS VERY NOTICEABLE ON THE 2004 - 2006 CHEVY MALIBU'S THAT COME INTO MY SHOP AS WELL. WHEN THE PLASTIC MELTS IT TOUCHES THE BULB AND POPS IT, NOW I DON'T HAVE ANY WAY TO WARN THE OTHER DRIVES THAT I NEED TO MAKE A TURN FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS ENGAGED AT 75 MPH IT SUDDENLY DISENGAGED AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO LOSE SPEED. THE CONTACT DID NOT APPLY THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO DISENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC WHO STATED THE BRAKE LIGHTS MALFUNCTIONED AND CAUSED THE CRUISE CONTROL TO DISENGAGED DUE TO THE BRAKE LIGHTS ILLUMINATING. THE MECHANIC REPLACED NUMEROUS FUSES IN THE VEHICLE AS WELL AS RE-CALIBRATING THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; HOWEVER, THAT DID NOT REMEDY THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT STATED THE TURN SIGNAL MALFUNCTIONED AS WELL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 148,000.

THE DRIVER SEAT ON THIS CAR HAS COME OFF THE RAILS ON RIGHT SIDE CAUSING IT TO TILT. IF THE SEAT IS NOT MOVED TO THE LOWEST SETTING THE TILTS WITH THE MOVEMENT OF THE CAR. I HAD THE SEAT REPAIRED ONCE; IT FAILED AGAIN AFTER ABOUT 6 MONTHS. AT THE SAME TIME I HAD THE EMERGENCY BRAKE REPAIRED. WHEN SETTING THE BRAKE, I HEARD A LOUD BANG. THE REPAIR FAILED ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO FOR THE SECOND TIME. I AM ALSO GOING THROUGH NEW BRAKES ON THIS CAR AT AN ALARMING RATE - THREE BRAKE REPLACEMENTS ALREADY AND THE CAR HAS 90,000 MILES. THE CAR IS AGAIN BEGINNING TO SHIMMY/SHUDDER WHEN GOING DOWN STEEP HILLS AND THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THE CAR SEEMS NOT TO SLOW DOWN AT ALL (I.E. SHIFTING GEARS) WHEN GOING DOWN HILL OTHER THAN BY THE BRAKES - IT FEELS LIKE A FREE FALL. THE SIGNALS, HEADLIGHTS, TAILLIGHTS AND BRAKE LIGHTS ALSO NEED FREQUENT REPLACEMENT. I TYPICALLY HAVE TO REPLACE AT LEAST ONE OF THESE AT EACH OIL CHANGE AND HAVE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS NEEDED TO MAKE REPLACEMENTS BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. I WOULD ESTIMATE THE HEADLIGHTS/BLINKERS HAVE BEEN REPLACED AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES. THE REAR LIGHTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED PERHAPS TEN TIMES. CURRENTLY THE THIRD BRAKE LIGHT IS OUT AND CANNOT BE REPAIRED WITHOUT TAKING OFF THE INTERIOR COVER OF THE CAR TO ACCESS THE WIRING - THE BULB IS NOT THE PROBLEM. *TR

THIS SITUATION MAY BE A SOLDER JOINT CRACKING CAUSED BY RAPID TEMPERATURE TRANSITIONS. IF SOLDER JOINT CRACKING OCCURS AND RESULTS IN AN OPEN CIRCUIT, THE TURN SIGNALS LAMPS BECOME INTERMITTENT OR INOPERATIVE. CONSEQUENCES: WHEN THE TURN SIGNALS ARE INOPERATIVE, THE DRIVER CANNOT USE THEM TO SIGNAL INTENT TO TURN THAT COULD RESULT IN A CRASH. *TR

AFTER INVESTIGATION I NOTICED THE LEFT TURN LIGHT BULB WAS MOSTLY WHITE IN COLOR AND THE TURN SIGNAL AMBER COLORED LENS WAS MELTED WITH A HOLE IN IT. IT SEEMS THAT DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS WHEN IT IS HOT THE LAMP IS OVERHEATING. MY LEFT TURN SIGNAL LIGHT IS CURRENTLY NOT WORKING. THE SATURN DEALER WENT OUT OF BUSINESS AND CLOSED. UN-FORTUNATELY, THE DASH-BOARD LIGHTS DO NOT COME ON WHEN YOU DO THIS, UNLESS THE SENSOR "THINKS" IT'S DARK. TO REMEMDY THIS, I PUT SOMETHING OVER THE SENSOR, BUT SHOULD NOT HAVE TO, AND IF I DON'T, EVEN THOUGH I CAN SEE IN FRONT OF MY CAR, I CAN'T SEE HOW FAST I'M GOING, TACHOMETER, BATTERY METER READINGS, ETC. WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE FOR SERVICE, THEY REPLACED THE BODY CONTROL MODULE 3 TIMES, TOLD ME IT WAS FIXED, I WENT TO PICK IT UP, SAME THING HAPPENED. WE GOT INTO ANOTHER MALIBU, AND IT HAPPENED WITH THAT CAR AS WELL. IN OTHER WORDS THE SYSTEM IS WORKING THE WAY IT WAS DESIGNED. UNFORTUNATELY, THAT DOES NOT MEAN IT IS WORKING CORRECTLY. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE AS I CAN NOT SEE DASH INDICATORS WHEN I NEED TO TURN THE LIGHTS ON MANUALLY. I ALSO OWN A 2002 CHEVROLET AVALANCHE WITH AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHTS, AND THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT EXIST. I'VE ALSO OWNED A 1998 CHEVROLET MALIBU WITH AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHTS, AND THIS PROBLEM DID NOT EXIST.
