NHTSA Campaign: 19V017000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2007-2013 X5 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive48i, X5 xDrive50i and X5 M vehicles, 2008-2014 X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i and X6 M vehicles, 2009-2013 X5 xDrive35d vehicles and 2010-2011 X6 ActiveHybrid vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag module, free of charge. The recall began March 14, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Your car's PCV valve heater can experience an electrical short that causes it to overheat, creating a serious fire risk while you're driving or shortly after you park. You may notice an electrical burning smell coming from under the hood, which is a warning sign to pull over immediately and exit the vehicle. BMW will replace the electrical wiring harness and add fuse protection to the PCV valve heater circuit at no cost.

Your car is producing black smoke from the tailpipe and losing power when you accelerate, and it's burning through spark plugs every 2 weeks and consuming about 5 quarts of oil every 2 weeks with oil leaks appearing in multiple locations. Filed: Dec 2024

Your car's seat calibration system and airbag/seat belt tensioner aren't working properly, which prevents the level control system from functioning correctly. This means your vehicle's safety systems may not deploy as designed in a crash. Fixing this will likely require recalibrating or replacing the seat occupancy sensors and airbag control module.

Filed: Nov 2023

Your fuel pump connector has burned into the fuel pump wiring harness, creating a serious fire hazard. Your mechanic compared this to a ticking time bomb, and you believe your vehicle should have been covered by a recall even though your VIN doesn't show one. The repair will likely involve replacing the fuel pump connector and harness to eliminate the fire risk.

Your 2008 BMW X5 experienced a coolant leak from the crossover pipe near the timing belt cover, which wasn't discovered until smoke suddenly poured from under the hood and out of the air conditioning vents with no warning lights—creating a serious fire risk. The low coolant light came on initially but disappeared after adding coolant, leaving you unaware of the dangerous leak. The repair involves replacing the leaking coolant crossover pipe and likely inspecting the EGR cooler system, which BMW has recalled for similar coolant-related fire hazards in other model years.

Filed: Jun 2023

Your car may experience violent shaking and feel like it's about to seize up while driving, particularly on the freeway, which could force you to pull over suddenly. This issue appears to involve the transfer case, driveshaft, or differential, but no warning codes appear to alert you to the problem, making it difficult for mechanics to diagnose. Even after visits to multiple shops and a BMW dealership, the issue hasn't been resolved. Fixing this will likely require a mechanic to physically inspect and potentially rebuild or replace the drivetrain components, which can be expensive.

Filed: Nov 2025

Your BMW X5 had a faulty PCV valve that was subject to a "Stop Drive" recall order, but you didn't receive notification about it. You continued driving the vehicle unknowingly until it was towed to the dealership in May 2024. When BMW replaced the PCV valve, they didn't address the rough idle, burning smell, and engine problems that developed from driving with the faulty valve. The repair may require a more thorough engine inspection and replacement of damaged components beyond just the PCV valve itself.
