CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH AN INCORRECTLY MANUFACTURED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PARKING PAWL GUIDE PLATE.
Risk: THIS COULD CAUSE THE PARKING LOCK SYSTEM NOT TO ENGAGE, AFTER THE TRANSMISSION IS PLACED IN THE PARK ("P") POSITION. IF THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED ON AN INCLINE, AND THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT ENGAGED, THIS COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE ROLLAWAY CONDITION.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPAIR AND REPLACE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION GUIDE PLATE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 30, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-332-4269.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 103)
Air Bags →5 issues
While driving at low speed, you heard a loud explosion-like noise from the passenger side that sounded like a shotgun blast. The noise appeared to come from the heater fan area rather than the dashboard, and you could hear debris when the heater was running. This could indicate an airbag deployment issue or a related safety system malfunction.

Your airbag warning light turns on when you start the car. You've found online that this appears to be a known issue with a recall, but when you checked your vehicle identification number (VIN), it showed zero recalls for your car. This suggests your vehicle may not be included in the recall even though it has the same airbag problem.

While driving at only 10 mph, all of your front and rear driver's side airbags suddenly deployed without any warning, causing minor arm injuries. BMW's investigator determined there was evidence of a previous collision and refused to cover the full repair cost, offering only to pay for parts but not labor. The airbags deployed unexpectedly at 74,800 miles and your vehicle was never repaired.

Your airbag warning light is illuminated on your dashboard. This indicates a fault has been detected in the airbag system that needs attention. A diagnostic scan of the airbag control module will be needed to identify the specific problem and determine what repair is required.

Your front passenger airbag warning light stays on constantly and won't turn off. This indicates a problem with your airbag system that needs to be diagnosed, as the airbag may not deploy properly in a crash if the warning light remains on.

Your brake pedal becomes hard and unresponsive when the vehicle slows down, and normal braking doesn't resume until you restart the engine. The same engine and brake system in the BMW 740i has been recalled for this exact hydraulic system issue, but your X5 model hasn't received the same recall notice. The problem likely involves the brake hydraulic system and may require inspection and repair of hydraulic components or brake fluid circulation.

Your brake booster has a faulty check valve that's leaking oil into it, which contaminates the brake fluid and causes you to lose power braking assistance. This means your brakes will feel much harder to press and less responsive. BMW issued a recall for similar problems on about 30,000 X5s from 2007-2010, but your vehicle wasn't included. The fix will likely involve replacing the check valve and flushing the brake system to remove contamination.

Tires →1 issue
Your tire suddenly failed while driving on the freeway, causing violent shaking and pulling to the right. The sidewall separated and the tire was shredded, though it showed no prior warning signs or visible damage. The failure happened within 24 hours of installation under normal driving conditions. Replacing the failed tire and having the wheel inspected for damage would be necessary.

Electrical System,unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
Your car may experience an engine fire while parked, with flames spreading rapidly enough to pose a life-threatening risk. The owner reports their vehicle caught fire in the driveway shortly after purchase, with local fire department investigation determining the fire originated in the engine compartment. This issue may involve electrical or fuel system components that can ignite without warning. Resolution will require a complete engine and electrical system inspection by a qualified technician to identify the fire source.

Electrical System →1 issue
The wiring inside your headlights is losing its protective insulation, leaving bare wires exposed. This creates a serious fire hazard that could endanger you, your passengers, and other drivers on the road. The owner reports this is a known issue affecting multiple vehicles. Fixing this will likely require replacing the headlight wiring harness or the entire headlight assembly.

Your emergency brake is fractured and not working properly. When you tried to use it, your car continued moving forward and nearly hit a wall. The emergency brake warning light came on, indicating the system has failed. The repair will likely involve replacing the fractured emergency brake lever and inspecting the brake cable assembly.

Unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your car caught fire while parked in your driveway with the keys out of the ignition, spreading flames to nearby vegetation and cracking windows on your house. The fire department extinguished the fire before it reached the house. The cause of the fire is unknown, but this indicates a serious electrical or fuel system malfunction that needs immediate investigation by a qualified technician.

Suspension,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your car shakes severely and almost uncontrollably when driving at high speeds on the freeway. You've also noticed leaks somewhere on the vehicle, but you're not certain where they're coming from. The shaking and leaking could be related to suspension or fuel system issues that need inspection.

Seats →1 issue
Your driver's seat has developed a hole that burned through the fabric and caused a burn on your leg while you were driving. This appears to be a defect in the seat material that created a safety hazard during normal use. The seat fabric may need to be replaced or the seat assembly may need to be repaired to prevent further injury.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting →1 issue
Both of your taillights are shorting out due to a connection problem between the housing and adapter, causing them to burn and stop working completely. When your taillights don't work, you won't be visible to other drivers at night or in bad weather, which is both a safety hazard and illegal. The fix will likely involve replacing the taillight housings and checking the electrical adapter connections.

Power Train,air Bags →1 issue
You received recall notices for three separate safety issues on your 2005 BMW X5 affecting airbags and the powertrain. The dealer couldn't complete the repairs because the necessary parts weren't available, and BMW said it would take 2-3 weeks to get the airbag parts expedited. The delay has extended well beyond a reasonable timeframe, and there appears to be a parts distribution problem affecting multiple owners with the same model. Getting the recall repairs completed will require waiting for BMW to source and deliver the specific parts needed for each recall campaign.

Electrical System, unknown Or Other →1 issue
All of your car's windows are failing to roll up properly. Despite repeated repairs at the dealership, the problem keeps recurring, suggesting a systemic defect with the window system rather than isolated failures. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and repairing or replacing the window motors, regulators, or electrical switches that control the windows.
