POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:PARK/NEUTRAL START INTERLOCK SWITCH

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: 4.4I SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, ABRASION PARTICLES COULD DEPOSIT ON THE ELECTRICAL CONTACTS WITHIN THE SWITCH, CAUSING A DISRUPTION OF THE ELECTRIC CURRENT THROUGH THE CONTACTS. IF THE DISRUPTION OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY WITH THE TRANSMISSION IN THE NEUTRAL OR PARK POSITIONS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL SWITCH AUTOMATICALLY INTO THE EMERGENCY PROGRAM, WHICH IS DISPLAYED IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER VIA A WARNING LAMP AND A MESSAGE, "TRANS. FAIL-SAFE PROG." IN THIS CASE, THE VEHICLE CAN BE DRIVEN IN LOWER GEARS ONLY WITH LIMITED ENGINE OUTPUT.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION GEAR POSITION INDICATOR SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 14, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.

Your car has no reverse gear and the traction control system isn't communicating with the ABS module, which means your anti-lock brakes aren't working. This is a serious safety issue that needs immediate attention. The problem likely involves transmission or electrical system repairs to restore reverse function and ABS communication.

Your X5 experienced hesitation while driving, but no check engine or transmission warning light appeared on the dashboard. After the dealer inspected it, they found the transmission was completely burned up. According to your service manual, a warning light should have activated to put the vehicle in a safe mode and alert you to seek service before damage occurred, but this warning never came on. The dealer indicated the transmission control module was defective from the factory. Fixing this issue would likely require transmission repair or replacement and investigation of why the warning system failed to activate.

While driving at 40 mph, your transmission suddenly disconnected from the engine multiple times over a 10-15 minute period, causing the engine RPMs to spike instead of smoothly shifting gears. This happened 4-8 times before you took the vehicle to a repair shop, where they found the transmission was completely burned out. According to the repair facility, checking or changing the transmission fluid requires removing the entire transmission from the vehicle. Fixing this will likely require a complete transmission rebuild or replacement.

Your front driveshaft experienced premature wear due to its design, which caused the vehicle to not move when placed in gear and produced a whining noise from the transmission area. The driveshaft had a coupling on one end and a spline on the other end, but engineers indicated it should have had two flexible couplings, two universal joints, or a combination of both to properly handle misalignment. Fixing this would likely require replacing the driveshaft assembly with a properly designed one that includes the necessary couplings and joints.
