THE FRAME IS RUSTED THROUGH ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE NEXT TO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. IT HAS TWO RUST HOLES THAT ARE CONNECTED WITH A CRACK THAT THE RUST IS STARTING TO WIDEN. THE HOLES ARE APPROXIMATELY 1-2 INCHES IN SIZE. I FIRST BOUGHT THE VEHICLE IN 2013 AT MY HOME OF RECORD (MINNESOTA) IN-BETWEEN DUTY STATIONS. I'M ACTIVE MILITARY AND I'M STATIONED IN NORTH CAROLINA. I DEPLOYED IN 2017 AND DIDN'T GET BACK UNTIL LATE 2018. IN EARLY 2019 STEVENSON HENDRICK TOYOTA CONTACTED ME TO HAVE RECALLS PERFORMED ON MY TRUCK. I TOOK IT IN AND THEY DID THE SEAT BELT, THROTTLE PEDAL, AND LOAD RATING STICKER. HOWEVER, I WAS NEVER INFORMED THAT MY FRAMED WAS RUSTED THROUGH. I FOUND OUT AFTER I HAD TO TROUBLESHOOT MY O2 SENSORS. AT WHICH POINT I CONTACTED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS IN REGARDS TO UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE CENTRAL DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA CASE NO. 2:15-CV-02171-FMO-FFM TO SEE IF THEY WOULD REPLACE MY FRAME OR AT LEAST REPAIR IT; AS I UNDERSTOOD THE TIMEFRAME HAD PAST THAT TOYOTA WOULD REPLACE THE FRAME. I EXPLAINED TO THEM THAT I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION ABOUT THIS AND THAT I WAS DEPLOYED AS WELL DURING THIS TIME. TOYOTA STILL REFUSE TO FIX THE FRAME. WHEN I TAKE THE TRUCK IN TO GET SERVICED SOMETIMES THEY TURN ME AWAY; AS THEY DON'T WANT TO HELD LIABLE BECAUSE OF THE FRAME. FOR THE PRICE TO REPLACE THE FRAME I CAN PURCHASE A USED VEHICLE. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DISPOSE OF MY VEHICLE WHEN IT RUNS FINE AND IS PAID FOR. I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO CHECK OUT THE FRAME BECAUSE I HAD BECOME AWARE OF THE FRAME SERVICE CAMPAIGN. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE DEADLINE HAD PASSED IN JANUARY OF 2019 AND THAT THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I HAVE SINCE DISCOVERED MUCH MORE TROUBLESOME FRAME CORROSION AND AM CONCERNED THAT THE TRUCK IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE.

THE 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA BUMPER IS MOUNTED TO THE HITCH. THE HITCH IS WELDED TO BRACKETS THAT CONNECT TO THE FRAME. THE FRAME HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH PREVIOUS CAMPAIGNS, HOWEVER THERE IS A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE WITH THESE HITCHES. ANY TACOMA WITH THE BUMPER MOUNTED TO THE HITCH WOULD BE AT RISK OF CREATING A HAZARD FOR OTHER DRIVERS. IF I HAD BEEN TOWING SOMETHING WITH THE HITCH, IT MAY HAVE CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO OVERTURN AND KILL ME OR WHAT I WAS TOWING COULD'VE SEPARATED FROM MY VEHICLE AND CAUSED ANOTHER ACCIDENT. I CALLED TOYOTA AND LOGGED THIS COMPLAINT. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER BOTH STATE THERE IS NOTHING THEY WILL DO TO HELP ME OUT. THIS IS A $1700 HITCH/BUMPER ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT BILL. I'LL FIX IT OF COURSE ON MY OWN AS A RESPONSIBLE DRIVER THAT'S CONCERNED WITH MY AND OTHER DRIVER'S SAFETY. UNFORTUNATELY TOYOTA DOESN'T SEEM TO BE CONCERNED WITH PEOPLE'S SAFETY ON THE ROADS. THE TRUCK WENT IN FOR REPAIRS WHEN IT WAS ON THE LIFT THE MECHANIC SAID THERE WERE HOLES AND CORROSION IN THE FRAME AND IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE TO DRIVE. I ASKED THE DEALER ABOUT HAVING IT FIXED I WAS TOLD TO CONTACT CORPORATE. CORPORATE TOLD ME THE RECALL HAS BEEN CLOSED OUT AND THAT DID WHAT WAS NECESSARY TO FIX IT. SO FAR I'VE RECEIVED THE RUN AROUND FROM TOYOTA. THEY HAD A LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN AND REPLACED MANY TRUCK FRAMES. THAT STOPPED IN MARCH OF 2016. NOW THEY AREN'T DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND LEAVING IT ON THE SHOULDERS OF AMERICANS TO DEAL WITH. IN ADDITION TO THAT, AFTER THEIR OWN ADMISSION, ONE COULD ONLY SUSPECT THAT THE FRAMES THAT WEREN'T REPLACED HAVE A HIGH LIKELIHOOD OF FAILURE ON THE HIGHWAYS, ESPECIALLY IN STATES WHERE THEY (THE STATES) DON'T DO RIGOROUS INSPECTIONS TO GET VEHICLES LICENSED. AFTER THE RESEARCH THAT I'VE DONE I'VE DISCOVERED A FEW THINGS; THE TRUCKS HAVE A FUNDAMENTAL FRAME PROBLEM. TOYOTA ADMITTED THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM. MANY OF US, (TACOMA OWNERS) CAN'T AFFORD TO REPLACE THE TRUCK FRAME OR PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHICLE TO REPLACE IT WITH POTENTIALLY MAKING THE HIGHWAYS AND TOYOTA DRIVERS UNSAFE BECAUSE OF A KNOWN MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT TOYOTA WON'T RECTIFY. DEALER CONFIRMED THAT A NEW FRAME IS NEEDED AND ADVISED ME THAT IT IS ON ORDER. SINCE OCT 2015, I FOLLOWED UP WITH DEALER SEVERAL TIMES, AND IN JANUARY 2016, DEALER ADVISED THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE THE DOCUMENTATION IN THEIR SYSTEM. SO I BROUGHT MY TRUCK BACK IN AGAIN, AND SERVICE MANAGER JIMMY CONFIRMED THAT I AM ENTITLED TO A NEW FRAME UNDER TOYOTA PROGRAM AND THEY WILL PLACE THE ORDER FOR ME. AGAIN, I CONTINUED TO FOLLOW UP SEVERAL TIMES EACH MONTH AND WAS TOLD THAT FRAME IS ON ORDER. IN MARCH 2016, I FOLLOWED UP AGAIN WITH DEALER BECAUSE THE TOYOTA PROGRAM WAS ABOUT TO EXPIRE. DEALER AGAIN REASSURED ME THAT MY CASE IS IN THE SYSTEM BUT IT WILL TAKE SOME TIME TO RECEIVE NEW FRAME. IN APRIL 2016, I FOLLOWED UP AGAIN BUT THIS TIME I WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NO DATA IN THEIR SYSTEM ABOUT HAVING ORDERED A NEW FRAME FOR MY TRUCK. I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED TOYOTA CORPORATE OFFICE AND THEY OPENED A CASE NUMBER (160-422-2525). I WAS TOLD BY TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE HANDLING MY CASE THAT THEY ARE GETTING A NEW FRAME FOR ME. IT IS NOW SEPTEMBER 2016 AND I STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY NEW UPDATES. I CALLED MY TOYOTA DEALER ABOUT TWO OTHER RECALLS AND INQUIRED ABOUT THE FRAME ISSUE AS WELL. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THAT THE FRAME IN FACT HAD A 'LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN' ISSUED BY TOYOTA WHICH EXPIRED MARCH 31, 2016. HE SAID TO BRING IN MY TRUCK FOR THE OTHER TWO RECALLS (ONE WAS FOR THE LEAF SPRING) AND HE WOULD INSPECT THE FRAME (SEE PAGE 2 OF SERVICE INVOICE). AFTER INSPECTION, THE TECHNICIAN SAID HE DID NOT THINK THE TRUCK WOULD HOLD UP IN AN ACCIDENT. I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE, IN CALIFORNIA, AND ASKED FOR THEIR HELP AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION ABOVE. THEY GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER (1607110805) AND SAID THEY WOULD GET BACK TO ME. WHEN I RECEIVED THE CALL BACK, THEY DECLINED MY REQUEST DO TO MISSING THE DEADLINE. IF THIS PROBLEM IS A KNOWN SITUATION WITH TACOMAS (ENOUGH FOR A 'LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN'), ONE WOULD THINK TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS, THEY WOULD SEND A CERTIFIED LETTER. NOT ONLY IS MY SAFETY IN JEOPARDY, BUT I CANNOT EVEN TRADE MY VEHICLE IN FOR ONE THAT WILL ENSURE MY SAFETY DUE TO FINANCIAL LIMITATIONS AND THE DECREASED VALUE OF MY TRUCK NOT HAVING THIS ISSUE RESOLVED. ON MARCH 17 2016 MY SON TOOK THE TRUCK TO OUR LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER IN REFERENCE TO THE LEAF SPRING RECALL. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED THE SAME INFORMATION TO MY SON IN REFERENCE TO THE FRAME RECALL AND THAT THE SERVICE TREATMENT HAD BEEN PERFORMED. MY VEHICLE WAS NEVER INSPECTED ON THESE TWO OCCASIONS AT THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR POSSIBLE FRAME DAMAGE. MY SON AND I INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND LOCATED WHAT APPEARED TO BE RUST NEAR THE LEAF SPRING HANGERS WHICH WAS COMING UNDER THE PROTECTIVE COATING THAT HAD BEEN APPLIED BY TOYOTA. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER TO INSPECT THE FRAME. ON APRIL 15 2016 THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED ME THAT THE FRAME HAD A HOLE IN THE FRAME ON THE DRIVERS SIDE NEAR THE PART OF THE FRAME WHERE IT STARTS TO GO TOWARDS THE MOTOR. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED THAT IN HIS OPINION THE HOLE HAD BEEN THERE FOR AWHILE AND THAT THE HOLE COULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN THAT LARGE IN A YEAR SINCE BEING TREATED.I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND WAS ADVISED THIS WAS NOT A RECALL BUT A SERVICE CAMPAIGN AND THAT IT EXPIRED ON MARCH 31 2016 AND THAT THEY COULD NOT GIVE ANY ASSISTANCE WITH THE RUSTED FRAME.I ADVISED THE TOYOTA CASE MANAGER THAT I COULD UNDERSTAND IF IT HAD NEVER BEEN INSPECTED OR TREATED BUT THAT'S NOT THE CASE WITH MY VEHICLE. VEHICLE'S FRAME IS RUSTING AND FLAKING APART. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP PER THEIR LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN TO APPLY A CORROSION-RESISTANT COMPOUND. ONE YEAR LATER THAT COMPOUND IS STARTING TO FALL OFF AS THE RUST BENEATH IT LETS LOOSE. SINCE THERE IS PHYSICALLY LESS FRAME MATERIAL THAN WHEN THE TRUCK WAS BUILT I FEEL THAT THIS VEHICLE WOULD SUFFER CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE IN A COLLISION AS THE THE STRENGTH OF THE FRAME HAS BEEN COMPROMISED. I AM ALSO CONCEREND THAT THE VEHICLE COULD LOOSE CONTROL IF THE FRAME FAILS AT HIGHWAY SPEED AFTER ENCOUNTERING A LARGE POTHOLE. YOU CAN SEE HOW THE RUST HAS AGGRESSIVELY ATTACKED THE MANY WELDS ON THIS FRAME AND WEEKEND THE JOINTS. WHILE THE MANUFACTURER DID MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO COAT THE FRAME AND HIDE THE RUST THERE ARE SEVERAL PLACES ON THE INTERIOR OF THE FRAME THAT RECIEVED NO TREATMENT AT ALL. YOU CAN STILL SEE THE METAL FLAKING AWAY IN THOSE UNTREATED AREAS. TO HAVE SOME SURFACE RUST ON A 10 YEAR OLD VEHICLE IS NORMAL BUT THIS PROBLEM IS WAY BEYOND SURFACE RUST. WHILE TOYOTA HAS AGREED TO REPLACE FRAMES WITH CONSIDERABLE SIZE HOLES I THINK THAT FRAMES LIKE MINE ARE BEING OVERLOOKED. RATHER THAN HAVE A SINGLE POINT OF FAILURE MY ENTIRE FRAME IS WEEKEND AND WILL CONTINUE TO WEAKEN AS THE COMPOUND THEY APPLIED IS FAILING TO STOP THE RUSTING. WHILE THE FRAME DOES NOT CURRENTLY HAVE A HOLE IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BASED ON THE FLAKING RUST. TOYOTA IS NOT WILLING TO OFFER ANY HELP WITH FUTURE HOLES BECAUSE THEY SPRAYED THE COMPOUND ON THE FRAME. UNFORTUNATELY THE COMPOUND DOESN'T PROTECT THE ENTIRE FRAME AND IT IS PRONE TO PEELING OFF. EVEN IF THE COMPOUND WERE APPLIED CORRECTLY IT IN NO WAY PROVIDES THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY THAT THE FRAME ONCE HAD.

I HAD THOSE SPECIFIC PARTS LOOKED AT BY MY MECHANIC AND ALTHOUGH A PORTION (THE LINES ARE BAD AND I AM HAVING REPLACED) THE PS RACK IS NOT IN BAD CONDITION. I CONTACTED TOYOTA TO SEE WHAT THEY WILL COVER AND WAS TOLD THEY WILL NOT COVER PARTS THAT ARE NOT THE FRAME. MY TRUCK IS 10 YEARS OLD. IT IS IN GREAT CONDITION AND RUNS GREAT AND I PLANNED TO KEEP IT FOR A LONG TIME. THE TAILGATE OF THE VEHICLE LACKS THE REQUIRED AMOUNT OF STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY TO SERVE ITS INTENDED PURPOSE. SINCE THE TAILGATE IS DESIGNED TO BE OPENED TO A FLAT POSITION FOR LOADING OR UNLOADING ITEM(S) PLACED IN THE BED OF THE TRUCK IT WILL CERTAINLY REQUIRE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF STRENGTH FOR THIS PURPOSE. I NOTICED THAT MY TAIL GATE WAS NO LONGER STRAIGHT ACROSS WHEN IN THE CLOSE POSITION BUT HAD A CONCAVE APPEARANCE. I WORRIED THAT THE TAIL GATE MAY COME UNLATCHED WHILE IN THE UP POSITION OR WORSE BY COLLAPSING BY FOLDING IN THE MIDDLE IF USING IT TO CARRY A PARTIAL LOAD. I LOAD MY 4-WHEELER IN THE BACK OF THE TRUCK AT TIMES AND DUE TO THE SHORT BED HAVE TO LEAVE THE REAR TIRES RESTING ON THE TAIL GATE. THE WEIGHT, ALTHOUGH NOT EXCESSIVE, SEEMED TO POSSIBLY BE THE CAUSE OF THE DISTRESS ON THE TAILGATE. I REMOVED THE INTERIOR COVER AS WELL AS THE TOP TAILGATE COVER FOR INSPECTION. MY INSPECTION DID REVEAL TWO CREASES IN THE TAILGATE TOP SECTION (WHEN IN THE CLOSE POSITION) ABOUT 18" FROM THE RIGHT TOP AND THE SAME DISTANCE FROM THE LEFT TOP SIDE. I CALLED TOYOTA TO SEE IF ANY POSSIBLE RECALL WAS IN PLACE TO ADDRESS THIS SITUATION AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO SUCH RECALL. I ASKED IF THEY RECOMMENDED ANY REMEDY FOR THE CONDITION THAT I DESCRIBED AND THEY SUGGESTED A COMPANY THAT DOES AFTERMARKET TRUCK MODIFICATIONS. IF THIS TAILGATE ISN'T DESIGNED TO CARRY A LOAD THAN A PERMANENT WARNING SIGN SHOULD BE CLEARLY VIEWED FROM THE TAILGATE POSITION AT OR NEAR THE HANDLE OR THE FLAT SURFACE WHEN THE TAILGATE IS LOWERED. THE OTHER PROBLEM IS WITH THE REAR CONSOLE LATCH WHICH CLOSES AND OPENS THE CONSOLE BROKE AFTER EIGHT MONTHS OF DRIVING MY TRUCK. THE LATCH DID FEEL LIKE IT WAS STICKY UNTIL I CLOSED THE TOP PART OF THE CONSOLE AND THE LATCH BROKE OFF. I WAS ABLE TO TAKE IT OFF MYSELF BUT I EVENTUALLY FOUND OUT IN ORDER TO REPLACE THAT PART I WOULD HAVE TO BUY AN ENTIRE NEW CONSOLE FOR A PART I TOOK OFF IN LESS THAN THIRTY SECONDS. THE FRAME WAS REPLACED BY A TOYOTA FACTORY FRAME PURCHASED BY THE AUTO BODY THAT WAS DOING THE WORK FROM A TOYOTA DEALER. I NOTICED RECENTLY THAT THERE WAS A EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF CORROSION, WARPING AND A CRACK IN THE REAR SECTION OF THE FRAME THAT IS ON THE VEHICLE. I STARTED TO RESEARCH THE ISSUE ONLINE AND FOUND A RECALL FOR CERTAIN 2005 AND UP TACOMA'S SO I CALLED THE TOYOTA AMERICA 800 NUMBER TO SEE WHAT THE PROCESS IS TO GET IT TAKEN CARE OF I WAS INFORMED THAT MY VEHICLE VIN WAS NOT PART OF A RECALL AND THE ONLY THING I COULD DO IS TAKE IT TO A DEALER FOR INSPECTION, SO I DID THEY NOTED THE ISSUE AND TALKED TO THE LOCAL SERVICE MANAGER WHICH IN TURN SAID THE VIN IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL AND THERE IS NOTHING THAT ASSOCIATES THE FRAME THAT THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS WITH MY VIN. IT IS ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHERE THE FRAME RAIL CURVES DOWN. THIS IS ONE THING THAT IS KEEPING IT FROM GETTING A INSPECTION STICKER. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DRIVING THE VEHICLE IN ITS CURRENT CONDITION DUE TO THE STRUCTURE OF THE FRAME. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. HE CALLED ME BACK TO VIEW THE RUSTED OUT FRAME, WHICH I DID TO MY SHOCK AND HORROR - THERE WAS A LARGE WHOLE! LOOKED UNSAFE! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE - CLEARLY DEFECTIVE FRAME. THEY SUGGESTED I TAKE THE TRUCK BACK TO THE ORIGINAL TOYOTA DEALER WHICH I DID - ALTHOUGH NOT SURE WHY THEY COULD NOT DEAL WITH 'TOYOTA" THEMSELVES. THE ORIGINAL DEALER SAID THE FRAME REPLACEMENT / REPAIR WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE COST WOULD BE BETWEEN $10,000 - $14,000. THE PLATES ARE STILL IN CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER AT RIVET POINTS. THE CONDITIONS OF THE CONCEALED PORTIONS OF THE RIVETS ARE UNKNOWN. THE RUST IS LOCATED PRIMARILY UNDER THE TRUCK BED, BUT THERE IS SOME UNDER THE PASSENGER CAB. AN INTERNET SEARCH INDICATES THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN MISTREATED AND HAS FOLLOWED ALL MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE. I AM ALSO AWARE OF THE 2001-2004 TACOMA FRAME RECALL. I HAVE DONE SOME MORE RESEARCH AND NEAR ALL OF THE OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT RUST ON THE SECOND GENERATION TACOMAS ARE IN THE SAME LOCATION. THE HOLES ARE ON BOTH THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE RIGHT NEXT TO THE CAT. CONVERTS. APPARENTLY TOYOTA HAS REPLACED SOME OF THE SECOND GENERATION FRAMES BUT IT IS ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS. IRONICALLY THAT HAVE CHANGED THE FRAME SLIGHTLY ON THE 2009-2013 AND HAVE INCLUDING A PLASTIC SHIELD OF SORTS IN THE LOCATION OF MY HOLES. IT SEEMS TO ME THEY REALIZE THERE IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM BUT WILL NOT OWN UP TO IT LIKE THEY HAVE IN THE PAST WITH THE 98-2004 MODELS. I RETURNED TO BARREL TOYOTA TO SEE IF THEY COULD OFFER ANY HELP OR MAYBE A TRADE IN FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE. THEY REFUSED. I HAVE A HOLE ON THE INSIDE OF BOX FRAME NEXT TO THE CAT. CONVERTER ON DRIVER SIDE. THIS WAS DISCOVERED BACK IN JANUARY OF 2013, AND WAS IMMEDIATELY REPORTED TO THE TOYOTA REP OVER THE DEALERSHIP. I'VE INQUIRED ABOUT THE SITUATION 3 TIMES SINCE THEN AND HAVE JUST GOTTEN THE ANSWER THAT ITS UNDER INVESTIGATION. THIS HOLE WHICH I CAN ALMOST STICK MY FIST THROUGH LOOKS TO BE LOCATED IN THE CRUMBLE ZONE, AND IS IN A HIGH STRESSED PART OF THE FRAME. I KNOW TOYOTA HAS RECALLED FIRST GENERATION TRUCKS FOR FRAME ROT, BUT WHY HAVEN'T THEY RECALLED ANY OF THE SECOND GENERATION TRUCKS FOR THE SAME ISSUES. YOU CAN SEARCH THE WEB AND FIND THAT I'M NOT ALONE WHEN IT COMES TO FRAME ROT ON THE SECOND GENERATION TACOMA TRUCKS. TOYOTA NEEDS TO BUCK UP AND FIX THESE ISSUES BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SEVERELY INJURED OR KILLED DUE TO THE DEFECTIVE FRAMES. PEOPLE SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY ON TOYOTA VEHICLES FOR QUALITY DURABILITY AND LONGEVITY. I WORK FOR A TOYOTA PRODUCTION PLANT AND I CAN'T IMAGINE THAT THEY ARE AVOIDING SUCH A DANGEROUS ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED ASAP. WHEN I DROPPED THE VEHICLE OFF THE ATTENDANT NOTIFIED ME THAT TOYOTA HAD SEEN A NUMBER OF THESE FRAME ISSUES AND THAT THEY HAD WARRANTIED 2 FRAMES THAT HE KNEW OFF--AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $12,000.00 PER FRAME. ON APRIL 29TH, I WAS TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND THAT I WOULD NEED TO SIGN A WAIVER TO RETRIEVE MY VEHICLE. DEALER HAD INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND SENT PHOTOS TO TOYOTA TO SEE IF WARRANTY WORK WOULD BE COVERED. ON MAY 10TH, I WAS CONTACTED BY DEALER AND THEY NOTIFIED ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND THAT THEY WOULD DO NOTHING FOR ME. I SPENT OVER $30,000.00 ON A TOYOTA BECAUSE THEY HAD A REPUTATION FOR RELIABILITY AND CUSTOMER SERVICE. THIS STARTED OCCURRING SHORTLY AFTER OWNING THE CAR AND IT HAS GOTTEN TREMENDOUSLY WORSE. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED TOYOTA WAS OFFERING A GOODWILL ASSIST WITH A NEW FRAME, BUT THE CONSUMER WOULD HAVE TO PAY LABOR FOR TRANSFERRING ALL PARTS AND INCIDENTALS WHICH WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $3,000-$4,000. THEY ALSO OFFERED TO HAVE IT WELDED AND IT WOULD COST $400.00-$500.00. THE CONSUMER REFUSED BOTH OFFERED. I'VE BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW FROM BALISE TOYOTA IN W.SPFLD, MA AND HAVE HAD EVERY BIT OF SERVICE PERFORMED THERE (WITH EXCEPTION OF 1 OIL CHANGE AND A NEW SET OF TIRES). LAST YEAR I PUT A CLAIM IN WITH TOYOTA ABOUT THE FRAME RUSTING. TWICE I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED FOR THIS DURING OTHER MAINTENANCE. BOTH TIMES I WAS FED THE STORY OF 'SURFACE RUST' WITH NO OFFER FROM TOYOTA TO REMEDY. MY FATHER OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA 4X4 WITH THE EXTENDED CAB. SAME TRUCK BUT JUST A YEAR NEWER. HE WAS THE ONE WHO ALERTED ME TO LOOK UNDER THE TRUCK TO SEE IF IT WAS RUSTING BECAUSE HIS WAS. HE TOO HAS A CLAIM. FROM WHAT I'VE BEEN TOLD, TOYOTA HAD A RECALL OF FRAMES DUE TO RUSTING BUT THAT WAS UP TO THE 2004 MODELS. THEIR REMEDY FOR 2004 AND PRIOR MODELS WAS A CHANGE IN FRAME DESIGN STARTING IN 2005. APPARENTLY THERE WAS A BAD BATCH OF METAL ON THOSE PRIOR YEARS (IF WHAT I'VE BEEN TOLD IS CORRECT). NONE OF THESE TRUCKS HAVE ANY FORM OF RUST PREVENTION UNDER THEM. NOR WAS THAT FACT DIVULGED DURING THE PURCHASE OF THIS VEHICLE. I LOVE DRIVING THE TRUCK BUT HAVE BECOME VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE BRAND. THE WEIGHT RATING FOR THE CARGO BOX IS LISTED AT 1000 POUNDS BUT THERE IS NOTHING ON THE TAILGATE. I HAVE OWNED A FORD RANGER AND A CHEVY S-10 IN THE PAST AND NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEM LOADING A BIKE IN THE BED. I HAVE PICTURES OF THE COLLAPSED TAILGATE AVAILABLE. DRIVING AT FREEWAY SPEED HE APPLIED LIGHT OUTWARD PRESSURE TO THE UPPER PORTION OF THE DOOR FRAME AND THE NOISE WOULD OCCUR. EXAMINING THE EXTERIOR FIT OF THE DOOR THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY A 3/16" MISMATCH TO THE REAR DOOR THAT ALSO INDICATED AN IMPROPER FIT. I HAVE A SILVER 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA EXTENDED CAB AND THE PAINT IS CHIPPING EVERYWHERE, ROCKERS, DOORS, LEADING EDGE OF REAR DOORS, A COUPLE OF SPOTS ON THE WINDSHIELD PILLARS, AND IN FRONT OF THE REAR TIRES FEEL LIKE IT GOT SANDBLASTED. I COMPLAINED TO TOYOTA OF KEENE. HE TOLD ME TOYOTA TOLD HIM TO DO WHATEVER IS NECESSARY TO FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT HE IS ONLY TO PAINT THE LEADING EDGE OF THE READ DOORS. THE BODY SHOP TOLD HIM IF THEY PAINED THE REST IT WOULD ONLY CHIP OFF. I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY OTHER MANUFACTURES OR OTHER MODELS OF TOYOTA CHIP LIKE THIS. WHAT WILL IT LOOK LIKE AT 50,000 MILES. SEVERE BLISTERING, FLAKING AND CHIPPING OF PAINT ON MY NEW TOYOTA TACOMA. FIRST OCCURED ON JANUARY 11, 2005, WHEN THE TRUCK WAS ONLY 5 WEEKS OLD, AFTER AN 18 MILE ROUND TRIP TO WORK ON PAVED ROADS. THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF FLAKES AND CHIPS ON THE TRUCK, TOO MANY TO COUNT. AFTER A FEW MONTHS OF THIS, MUCH OF THE PAINT ON THE LOWER SECTIONS OF THE TRUCK WAS GONE. THIS IS HAPPENING TO MANY TACOMAS, AND TOYOTA IS TRYING TO BLAME IT ON ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE, BUT I DON'T SEE ANY OTHER VEHICLES WITH THE SAME KIND OF DAMAGE, ONLY TACOMAS. WHEN DRIVEN AS THE MANUFACTURER INTENDS, THE TACOMA SUFFERS SEVERE PAINT DAMAGE, MUCH MORE THAN ANY REASONABLE OWNER WOULD EXPECT. TOYOTA OFFERED ME A "COURTESY" PAINT JOB, BUT A BODY SHOP PAINT JOB AND NEVER MATCH THE ORIGINAL FACTORY FINISH AND IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE ON A BRAND NEW TRUCK. PLUS, THE PAINT JOB TOYOTA OFFERS COVERS ONLY THE AREAS AFFECTED SO FAR, LEAVING BEHIND ALL OF THE OTHER AREAS ON THE TRUCK WHICH ARE STILL PRONE TO SEVERE CHIPPING AND FLAKING. IN MY OPINION, THE PAINT IS DEFECTIVE.

CONSUMER WAS UNDER THE ASSUMPTION THAT A BED AND A BEDLINER CAME WITH THEIR 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA.*MR WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH WITH A LOAD OF 208 BRICKS IN PLASTIC WRAP. THE CONSUMER HAD TO MAKE A SUDDEN STOP AND WHEN HE DID THE BRICKS SHIFTED AND RAN INTO THE CAB OF THE TRUCK DENTING IT. THE CONSUMER BELIEVES IF THERE WAS A TRUCK BED INSTALLED THIS WOULD NOT HAVE OCCURRED. *NM

DT: CONSUMER WAS UNLOADING A MOTORCYCLE FROM HIS TRUCK AND THE REAR TAILGATE BENT IN ALMOST A V. THIS SHIFTED THE MOTORCYCLE'S WEIGHT, AND ALMOST RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. THE MOTORCYCLE COULD HAVE FALLEN OFF THE TAILGATE OR FALLEN UPON THE CALLER .THE OWNER'S MANUAL DOES NOT STATE HOW MUCH WEIGHT THE TAILGATE CAN SUPPORT OR ANY PRECAUTIONS ON LOADING ONTO A TAILGATE. *AK

1. FROM DAY ONE ;2. LOUD POPPING NOISES FROM UNDER SIDE - CABIN ATTACHMENT TO THE CHASIS. ITS BEEN TWO WEEKS SINCE I TOOK THE VEHICLE AND ITS GETTING WORSE. OCCURRS WHEN GOING OVER EVEN SMALL BUMPS/RUTS/MANHOLE COVERS OR OTHER IMPERFECTIONS IN THE ROAD ESPECIALLY AT SLOW SPEEDS. AND, THERE IS SIGNIFICANT "SWAYING" IN THE CABIN. PROBABLY DUE TO IMPROPER SECUREMENT OF THE CAB TO CHASIS. 3. HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALER WHO CALLED TOYOTA IN CALIFORNIA WHO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM IN A LOT OF THE 05 TACOMAS WITH TRD, 4X4, 4 DOOR, SHORT BED MODELS, BUT HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO YET. IS THIS VEHICLE SAFE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY? THE DEALER,VERY NICE, SAID HE WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR TOYOTA TO COME UP WITH A SOLUTION. FURTHER RESEARCHING ON EDMUNDS' TOYOTA TACOMA FORUMS, I SEE MANY MANY NEW OWNERS WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS WHICH ACTUALLY HAS BEEN REPORTED SINCE THE INTRODUCTION OF THE VEHICLE LAST OCT/NOV. VERY STRONG AND LOUD VIBRATION. THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY WHEN THE SKIDPLATE WAS REMOVED. I'VE READ MANY COMPLAINTS FROM ONLINE FORUMS ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM. 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA ACCESS CAB WITH THE TRD PACKAGE AND SKID PLATE 2W DRIVE. E SKID PLATE CATCHES AIR AND CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO VIBRATE VIOLANTLY AT 75 MPH AND HIGHER, WHICH COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE THE LOSS OF CONTROL. WE REMOVED THE PLATE AND NOW THERE IS NO VIBRATION.
