FRAME RUSTED OUT, CAUSING THE BODY TO DROP AND A BOLT TO SETTLE ON MY GAS TANK, RESULTING IN A FUEL LEAK. NEEDS A NEW FRAME TO FIX.

THE SULLIVAN BROTHERS TOYOTA LOCATED IN KINGSTON, MA WAS CONTACTED WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THE FRAME NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT DECLINED REPLACEMENT DUE TO THE COST OF THE REPAIR. WHEN I CHANGED THE OIL IN MARCH, I NOTICED A HUGE HOLE ON THE INSIDE OF THE LEFT FRAME MEMBER, NEXT TO THE GAS TANK. I THEN CHECKED THE RIGHT SIDE, AND FOUND A LONG LINE OF RUSTED THROUGH HOLES ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THAT FRAME MEMBER. I FEEL THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY DEFECT BY THE OEM'S SELECTION OF STEEL GRADES.
THE FRAME HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED BY 2 SEPARATE REPAIR SHOPS AS BEING NOT DRIVABLE DUE TO HOLES. THIS MAKE AND MODEL WAS RECALLED FOR THIS REASON AND WAS BROUGHT INTO A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER IN 2009. THE FRAME WAS INSPECTED "OK" AND NO WORK WAS DONE. THE FRAME IS NOW ROTTED AND I AM NOW BEING TOLD IT IS INELIGIBLE FOR REPAIR BECAUSE IT IS NOW OUTSIDE OF THE 15-YEAR WARRANTY WINDOW. THIS VEHICLE WAS, IN FACT, BROUGHT TO TOYOTA WITHIN THE WINDOW AND NOTHING WAS DONE ABOUT IT.
TOYOTA SENT A RECALL CARD IN 2011 TO RUST PROOF THE FRAME. THEY COVERED UP THE RUST AND SAID THE VEHICLE WAS GOOD TO GO. THE FRAME HAS RUSTED TO THE POINT THE VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. I HAVE A FRIEND THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND THEY PURCHASED HIS VEHICLE AND I KNOW SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE HAD THEIR FRAME'S REPLACED AT NO CHARGE BY TOYOTA. THEY AVOIDED THE ISSUE AND NOW I HAVE A UNSAFE VEHICLE.

TOYOTA TACOMAS OF THIS YEAR ARE A SAFETY HAZARD DUE TO FRAMES THAT RUST THROUGH AND BECOME WEAK TO THE POINT OF FAILURE. TOYOTA HAS NOT DONE ENOUGH WITH ITS VOLUNTARY SERVICE REPAIR LEAVING THOUSANDS OF THESE TRUCKS ON THE ROAD AND PUTTING ALL DRIVERS AT RISK OF DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY FROM FRAME BREAKAGE. TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL ANY AND ALL REMAINING TRUCKS AND PROVIDE FRAME REPAIR SUITABLE FOR SAFE ON-ROAD OPERATION. MY VEHICLE FRAME IS NEARLY ENTIRELY RUSTED THROUGH. IT WAS INSPECTED DURING TOYOTAS SERVICE CAMPAIGN AND FOUND NOT TO BE BAD ENOUGH FOR REPAIR, NOW IT IS TOO LATE AND NO LONGER QUALIFIES FOR REPAIR. THE PICTURE PROVIDED SHOWS MY DRIVER SIDE FRAME RAIL BOTTOM. THE TOP OF THIS FRAME RAIL IS SO SOFT I CAN PUSH THROUGH IT WITH MY FINGERS. THE PASSENGER SIDE FRAME RAIL HAS MARGINALLY LESS RUST THROUGH BUT IS STILL IN AN UNSAFE CONDITION. THESE VEHICLES ARE DANGEROUS AND SOMEONE WILL BE INJURED, IF SOMEONE ALREADY HASNT, AS A RESULT OF THESE POOR QUALITY FRAMES.

[XXX], SON BOUGHT TRUCK IN 2008 WENT TO L& S TOYOTA REGARDING RUST, NOTHING WAS DONE. FRAME HAS RUSTED SO BAD THAT IT PUNCTURED HOLE IN FUEL TANK; OTHERWISE, TRUCK IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. IN 2008 TOYOTAS FRAME RUST WAS SO BAD ON 1995-2004 TACOMAS (ABOUT 800,000 TRUCKS) WAS SO BAD THE COMPANY HAD TO BUY MANY OF THEM BACK, CONDUCT EXTENSIVE FRAME REPAIRS AND/OR EXTEND FRAME CORROSION WARRANTIES BY 15 YEARS. COMPANY NEVER ISSUED A RECALL FOR THAT PROBLEM. WE WOULD APPRECIATE GETTING OUR FRAME AND FUEL TANK FIXED. OUR LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER INSPECTED THE FRAME LAST WEEK AND CONFIRMED THAT IT HAS THE RUST ISSUE COVERED BY THE 15 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT THE 15 YEARS ENDED TWO YEARS AGO FOR MY VEHICLE. TOYOTA APPLIED A THICK UNDER COAT IN 2011 BUT IT ACTUALLY PREVENTED THE DISCOVERY OF THE DEFECT UNTIL AFTER THE 15 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. THIS IS CLEARLY A RECALL SITUATION OR AT THE VERY LEASE THEY SHOULD HONOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY ON MY TRUCK BECAUSE THEY HIDE THE DEFECT.

I TOOK IT IN FOR THE 'FIX', NOW (11/19/15) I FIND OUT MY FRAME HAS RUSTED THROUGH AND IS VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THIS IS A POPULAR TRUCK AND THERE ARE ALOT ON THE ROAD, SOME MAY BE IN THE SAME SITUATION I AM IN. TOYOTA'S RESPONSE WAS' WE CAN'T HELP YOU'. AFTER THE 'FIX' I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEMS IN THE FUTURE.

ON APRIL 8, 2015, I TOOK MY 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC I FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. HE INFORMED ME THAT THE FRAME WAS SO SEVERELY RUSTED THAT IT WAS NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE AND THAT THEY WOULD NOT PERFORM THE REPAIRS. THEY ALSO INFORMED ME THAT ANY ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE FRAME WOULD STILL RENDER IT UNSAFE. THEY ALSO CHECKED FOR RECALLS/BUYBACKS ON THE VEHICLE AND IT WAS NOT ELIGIBLE. I WAS PLANNING A 2000 MILE TRIP WITH LOAD. HAD I PROCEEDED WITH THE TRIP WITHOUT KNOWING THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE, I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN GRAVE DANGER. *TR
I PURCHASED MY 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA 4X4 11/2013 AT A SMALL DEALERSHIP. I CHECKED THE VEHICLE OUT PRETTY GOOD BEFORE PURCHASE AND FOUND LITE SURFACE RUST ON FRAME AND THOUGHT NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. 12/2014 I WAS WORKING ON EMERGENCY BRAKE, DO TO STICKING AND NOTICES A LARGE RUST HOLE AT THE REAR LEAF SPRING. I STARTED LOOKING ON THE INTERNET FOR LOCAL FRAME REPAIR COMPANY'S AND FOUND OUT ABOUT THE PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR TACOMA. I CALLED TOYOTA SERVICE AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE THE WARRANTY RAN OUT ON FRAME RUST. I CALLED A LOCAL TOYOTA TO BUY A NEW FRAME, THEY TOLD ME THEY DON'T MANUFACTURE THAT YEAR ANYMORE. I TOOK IT TO A FRAME REPAIR SHOP AND THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD COST $2600 TO FIX THE REAR HALF SECTION OF THE FRAME AND TO REPLACE THE FRONT SECTION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THE WHOLE FRAME, IF THEY LOCATE ONE USED FROM OUT WEST AND REPAIR WOULD BE $6000. IT REALLY SEEMS THAT THERE IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE HERE AND THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL ON THE FRAME. IF THEY RECALL THEY HAVE TO FIX ALL THE YEARS MENTIONED. *TR

AFTER TALKING TO OUR MECHANIC ABOUT REPAIR, WE DISCOVERED THAT TOYOTA HAD ISSUED A WARRANTY EXTENSION FOR FRAME DUE ACCELERATED RUSTING OF THE FRAME AND MANUFACTURER DEFECT, BUT WE WERE NEVER NOTIFIED. WE CONTACTED TOYOTA, AND THEY SAID THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED ON JUNE 10, 2014. APPARENTLY, THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD BEEN CONTACTED, BUT NOT US. WE PURCHASED THE TRUCK ON 2/20/2013. OUR MECHANIC HAS WARNED AGAINST DRIVING THE VEHICLE DUE TO FRAME ROT. TOYOTA IS NOT WILLING TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH WE WERE UNAWARE OF IT AND NOT NOTIFIED. SO, WE NOW HAVE A VEHICLE THAT RUNS WELL AND IS IN GOOD SHAPE MECHANICALLY AND BODY-WISE, BUT WE HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT DRIVING IT SAFELY ON THE HIGHWAY. *TR

EARLY IN 2014, I NOTICED THE CAB CORNER HAD DROPPED DOWN. I LOOKED UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE AND SAW THE FRAME WAS RUSTED. I CALLED TOYOTA OF GR; THEY TOLD ME TO CALL TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE. I CALLED TOYOTA'S MAIN OFFICE (CUSTOMER SERVICE); THEY ASSIGNED ME A CASE NUMBER AND TOLD ME TO BRING IT TO A LOCAL DEALER AND HAVE THEM CHECK IT. I BROUGHT IT TO TOYOTA OF GR WHERE THEIR MECHANIC DEEMED IT UNSAFE TO DRIVE. TOYOTA OF GR SENT THIS REPORT TO TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE. ON 4/24/14 I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT "TOYOTA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON YOUR TACOMA FOR A PERIOD OF 15 YEARS WITH NO MILEAGE LIMITATION FROM THE VEHICLE'S IN SERVICE DATE, FOR PERFORATION OF THE VEHICLE'S FRAME CAUSED BY RUST CORROSION. BASED ON A RECENT INSPECTION OF YOUR TACOMA, IT APPEARS THAT THE FRAME IS INDEED PERFORATED. AS A RESULT, TOYOTA IS PREPARED TO REPURCHASE YOUR TACOMA." ON 4/25/14 I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, U.S.A. INC. STATING THAT THEY WOULD REPURCHASE MY VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THE CONFIRMATION THAT MY VEHICLE COMPLIES WITH ALL OF THE CONDITIONS OF THE WARRANTY EXTENSION. I WAS ASKED TO SIGN AN AGREEMENT ACCEPTING THEIR REPURCHASE AMOUNT AND SEND IT BACK TO THEM WITH A COPY OF THE TITLE. THIS WAS COMPLETED ON 4/28/14. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM TOYOTA 4/30/14 STATING THAT THE TRUCK DID NOT QUALIFY BECAUSE OF THE DATE IT WAS PUT INTO SERVICE. I FOUND OUT I MISSED IT BY FOUR MONTHS. IF THEY WOULD HAVE TOLD ME WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE 3 YEARS EARLIER THAT IT DID QUALIFY, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF AT THAT TIME. THEY HAD MY VIN BEFORE THEY SENT THE LETTER OUT ON 4/25/14 WHEN THEY SAID THEY WOULD BUY IT BACK. WE WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR HELP WITH THIS SITUATION. *TR

ON MARCH 26, 2014, I LEARNED BY WORD OF MOUTH ABOUT THE RUST CORROSION PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA TACOMA'S. ON THAT DAY I CONTACTED TOYOTA TO VERIFY THE INFORMATION I RECEIVED. I WAS TOLD BY TOYOTA ABOUT THE "RUST CORROSION PROGRAM" AND THAT MY TACOMA WOULD NEED TO BE INSPECTED AND THAT I HAD UNTIL SEPT. 2014 TO GET THIS COMPLETED, AS THAT IS WHEN THE PROMOTION EXPIRED FOR MY TRUCK. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT A LETTER NOTIFYING ME WENT OUT IN 2008 AND I WAS PROVIDED THE ADDRESS IT WAS SEND, WHICH WAS NOT THE ADDRESS WHERE MY TRUCK WAS REGISTERED IN 2008. THUS I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY INFORMATION FROM TOYOTA ABOUT THE PROGRAM. ON APRIL 14, 2014, THE FRAME ON MY 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA WAS INSPECTED BY A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. UPON COMPLETION OF THE INSPECTION, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT MY TACOMA WAS "UNSAFE" TO DRIVE DUE TO A LARGE RUST HOLE ON THE FRAME FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE FUEL TANK TO THE REAR OF THE TANK. WHEN I REPORTED THIS INFORMATION TO TOYOTA THEY TOLD ME THAT THE PROMOTION HAD EXPIRED FOR MY TRUCK. I REFERENCED THE INFORMATION THAT I INITIALLY RECEIVED FROM TOYOTA AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE INFORMATION THAT I RECEIVED WAS WRONG AND THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING FOR ME. WHILE BREAKING SLOWLY COMING TO A STOP , I LOST MY ALL MY BREAK CONTROLS. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE WITH NO FATALITIES. THE TOW TRUCK BROUGHT ME TO MY MECHANICS FACILITY AND INDICATED THAT THE TRUCKS STEEL FRAME AND PARTS RECEDED BACKWARDS PLACING PRESSURE ON BREAK LINES UNDER TRUCK TO SNAP. IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT MY FRAME IS TOTALLY CORRODED (ROTTED) AND WOULD "SNAP" IN THE NEAR TERM. I HAVE NEVER HAD A VEHICLE THAT HAD PROBLEMS WITH CORRODED FRAMES - EVER AND I HAVE HAD A FEW VEHICLES THAT WERE IN MY OWNERSHIP FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS. THEY SEEM TO LAST A LONG TIME, AND SINCE WE KNEW WE WOULD BE FOOTING THE BILL TO SEND OUR YOUNGEST TO A PRIVATE COLLEGE IN 2002, WE DECIDED THAT WE WOULD TRADE OUR 1991 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER IN FOR A BRAND NEW TOYOTA 1999 TACOMA, IN JULY 1999. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM BLAISE ALEXANDER FAMILY DEALERSHIP ON OCTOBER 19 2005. I BOUGHT IT WITH 80K MILES ON IT. I PAID ROUGHLY 13,500.00 FOR IT. WELL A FEW MONTHS LATER I HAD NOTICED A HUGE HOLE HAD APPEARED IN THE AREA OF THE LEFT REAR SHACKLE. SINCE IT WAS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL WELD SHOP. HE AGREED TO TRY AND FIX IT. UPON REMOVING THE BOX, THE GAS TANK HE NOTICED HE HAD OPENED A MAJOR CAN OF WORMS. BOTH SIDES OF THE TRUCKS FRAME WERE SHOT FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAB TO THE BACK BUMPER. HE IMMEDIATELY CALLED ME WITH THIS PROBLEM. SINCE THIS WAS MORE THAN I COULD HANDLE I THEN TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I HAD BOUGHT IT ON OCTOBER 17 2006 AND SHOWED THEM PICTURES OF THE TRUCK THEY HAD JUST SOLD ME LESS THAN A YEAR AGO. THE GENERAL MANAGER JOHN PANKO SAID HIMSELF THAT THIS VEHICLE IS NOT ROAD WORTHY. WELL A LONG STORY SHORT... TOYOTA CORP WAS CALLED IN TO INSPECT THIS VEHICLE AND OFFERED TO GIVE ME $2000.00 TO FIX IT. A SERVICE MANAGER SAID IT WOULD COST ABOUT $6000.00 TO FIX. WELL NEEDLES TO SAY I AM NOT PAYING ANOTHER 4K ON A VEHICLE THAT I ALREADY OWE $11,500.00 ON. I HAVE NO WARRANTY LEFT TO DATE ON THIS VEHICLE, AND EVEN IF I DID, THE FRAME WOULD NOT BE COVERED. THE ALEXANDER DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT GIVE ME A LOANER CAR, OR HELP ME IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. THEY HAVE GIVEN ME THE RUN AROUND LONG ENOUGH.
