ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 6, 2003, through March 30, 2009 and FCHV-adv vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, through September 13, 2011. During manufacturing, a scratch may have occurred inside of the electrically driven water pump at the coil wire. The coil wire may corrode at the scratched portion.

Fix: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will replace the electric water pump, free of charge. The recall began on January 17, 2013. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

TL* THE CONTACT'S GIRLFRIEND OWNED A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HIS GIRLFRIEND WAS DRIVING AT 55 MPH, A GRAYISH SMOKE BEGAN TO EMIT FROM THE ENGINE WITHOUT WARNING. HIS GIRLFRIEND THEN IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND EXITED THE VEHICLE WITH HER SON AS THE SMOKE QUICKLY TURNED INTO FLAMES. THE FIRE SPREAD RAPIDLY AND THE VEHICLE EXPLODED. AS A RESULT, THE AUTHORITIES ARRIVED AT THE SCENE AND THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED; NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. DUE TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT REMAINED IN THEIR POSSESSION. THE DEALER NOR MANUFACTURER HAD YET TO BE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. I WAS DRIVING MY CAR ON THE HIGHWAY IN HOUSTON (INTERSTATE-10) AND MY CAR SUDDENLY STOPPED. I WAS ALMOST REAR-ENDED DUE TO THE CAR STOPPING SUDDENLY WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. THERE WAS ONLY A NARROW SHOULDER AND I HAD TO WAIT FOR THE TOW TRUCK. THE ISSUE IS THE INVERTER PUMP WHICH WAS A RECALL IN 2011 (12V536000) AND THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TOLD ME TO CALL TOYOTA US HQ. AFTER TWO WEEKS, MULTIPLE PHONE CALLS, AND ZERO FOLLOW THROUGH FROM TOYOTA, I AM STILL WITHOUT A FUNCTIONING CAR. THE TOTAL LACK OF CARE AND ACCOUNTABILITY FROM TOYOTA IS APPALLING AND FRANKLY RECKLESS. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE ON THE CAR AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE. MY WIFE AND I ARE BLESSED THAT WE WERE ABLE TO WALK AWAY FROM THE STALL ON THE HIGHWAY UNSCATHED; HOWEVER, THIS CAN HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE AT NIGHT AND PERHAPS THAT PERSON(S) WILL NOT BE SO LUCKY.

MRS. (OWNER) AT TWO DIFFERENT TIMES COULD NOT RESTART THE PRIUS AFTER COMPLETING ERRANDS. MRS. (OWNER) WAS BACKING THE CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE AND WAS FULLY IN THE STREET WHEN THE CAR STOPPED FUNCTIONING, LEAVING HER IN THE CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET, PERPENDICULAR TO TRAFFIC WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO RESTART THE CAR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING, BUT THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. SEVENTEEN DAYS LATER, THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ANOTHER DEALER WHO PERFORMED AN OIL CHANGE AND CHECKED THE TIRE PRESSURE. ONE WEEK LATER, THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE TIRE GAUGE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN RECOMMENDED THAT THE HYBRID BATTERY MIGHT BE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE HYBRID BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED WITH A 12-VOLT REGULAR BATTERY. THE BATTERY WAS NOT REPLACED. TWO HOURS LATER, WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING, THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR STARTED TO BLINK. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE THE CONTACT NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND CALLED AAA. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WERE TWO HOLES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE. THE TECHNICIAN ALSO FOUND A PIECE OF METAL THAT FRACTURED FROM THE ENGINE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 138,000.

THIS LAST TIME I NOTICED NOT MUCH OIL COMING OUT OF THE DRAIN PAN, POURED IT BACK INTO AN EMPTY OIL JUG TO MEASURE AND YES ONLY 1.5 QUARTS DRAINED OUT. I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY SMOKE OR SMELLED ANY OIL BURNING AND NO OBVIOUS LEAKS. I DON'T RUN THE ENGINE HARD OR AT HIGH SPEEDS (LESS THAN HALF MY DRIVING IS INTERSTATE) BUT CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHY IT'S ALL OF A SUDDEN STARTED USING OIL. WHEN I SEARCHED ONLINE IT SEEMS TO BE A COMMON FAILURE WITH PRIUS OVER 100K MILES. I WANT TO ADD MY OTHER TOYOTA AND HONDA VEHICLES HAVE LASTED WELL OVER 200K AND 180K MILES WITH NO ENGINE TROUBLES AT ALL (I ALSO DO THE MAINTENANCE ON THEM)

WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY HAVE DRIVEN IT, KEPT IT OVERNIGHT, AND COULD NOT DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. THE THIRD TIME, THE DEALER SAID IT WAS THE 12 VOLT BATTERY, WHICH WE REPLACED FOR $348.85. THE CAR STALLED AGAIN - SAME SAFETY CONCERNS - STALLED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. LUCKILY THE CAR BEHIND ME DID NOT HIT ME AND I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A SIDE STREET. THERE WAS NOT ANY POWER. THE WINDOWS AND AIR CONDITIONING WERE NOT WORKING AS WELL. I SAT IN THE ARIZONA HEAT FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AND THAN GOT IT TO START BY PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK OVER AND OVER. ALL SAFETY WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON, AS I DROVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. I WAS SHAKING AND IN TEARS, FEARFUL FOR MY LIFE AND THE LIFE OF OTHERS AS I DROVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP LESS THAN TWO MONTHS SINCE THE 12 VOLT BATTERY HAD BEEN REPLACED. I HAVE GOTTEN THE CAR SERVICED AT THE DEALERSHIP AS STATED IN THE MANUAL - EVERYTIME. THE STALLING OF THE ENGINE WHILE DRIVING AND THE LACK OF THE DEALER TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS OF GRAVE CONCERN. TOYOTA HAS FAILED TO RECALL THE ELECTRIC WATER PUMP IN THE SECOND GENERATION PRIUS. TOYOTA HAS RECALLED THE FIRST GENERATION PRIUS FOR A FAULTY ELECTRICAL WATER PUMP, WHICH IS THE SAME PUMP FOUND IN THE SECOND GENERATION. WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON AND I HAD TO GO TO THE TOYOTA SERVICE TO GET IT CHECKED. AFTER BEING TOLD THAT IT WAS RECALLED ON THE FIRST GENERATION, I LOOKED UP INFORMATION ONLINE ON IF THIS WAS THE SAME WATER PUMP. I THEN CAME ACROSS NUMEROUS ARTICLES AND RECALLS ON OTHER TOYOTA WEBSITES (IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES) STATING THAT THE PUMP HAS BEEN RECALLED. THIS CREATES A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHERE THERE IS NO POWER AT ALL TO THE WHEELS, CAUSING THE CAR TO SLIP BACKWARD ON THE ICE. I LIVE ON A STEEP HILL AND MY CAR HAS ALMOST ROLLED OFF THE HILL THREE TIMES DUE TO THE FAILURE OF THE TRACTION CONTROL / ENGINE. THE PRIUS, UNLIKE MANY OTHER CARS WITH TRACTION CONTROL, HAS NO TRACTION CONTROL SHUTDOWN/OVERRIDE SWITCH. IN RESEARCHING THIS ONLINE, MANY OTHER OWNERS REPORT THE SAME PROBLEM. 2007 PRIUS (69K MILES). DRIVING ON HIGHWAY, ALL CAUTION LIGHTS CAME ON. TOWED TO DEALER AND DIAGNOSED WITH A 12-VOLT BATTERY ISSUE. $280 TO REPLACE THE BATTER. THREE WEEKS LATER, SAME CAUTIONS LIGHTS. GOT MOST TO CLEAR WITH A RESTART WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE "MASTER CAUTION" AND THE "ENGINE CHECK" LIGHTS. DEALER SHOWED CODE OF "P0A93" AND STATED INVERTER COOLANT PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED FOR ANOTHER $486. I OWN A 2007 PRIUS WITH 35,000 MILES ON IT. WE HAVE BEEN A 2 PRIUS FAMILY FOR 6 YEARS, SO I AM HIGHLY FAMILIAR WITH DRIVING ONE. I HAVE HAD THREE VERY FRIGHTENING INCIDENTS HAPPEN IN ABOUT THE LAST 4 MONTHS IN MY CAR. EACH HAS HAPPENED IN EXACTLY THE SAME SPOT DURING A COMMUTE THAT I DO SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK. I HAVE BEEN EXITING FROM A FREEWAY, GOING 65 MPH, DOWN A GENTLE DOWNSLOPE. WHEN I EXIT (CONTINUING THE DOWNSLOPE) THE ENGINE STARTS REVVING AT A SPEED THAT I NEVER HAVE HEARD DURING ANY NORMAL DRIVING CIRCUMSTANCE. THIS IS WHILE I AM BRAKING TO STOP AT A LIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE EXIT. I HAVE HAD A CAR NEXT TO ME ROLL DOWN THE WINDOW AND THE DRIVER ASK IF I NEEDED HELP. OVER THE LAST 15 YEARS I HAD DONE THIS EXACT EXIT THOUSANDS OF TIMES, IN MANY DIFFERENT VEHICLES, AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING REMOTELY LIKE THIS. EACH OF THE THREE TIMES I SHIFTED THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, BUT THE HIGH REV CONTINUED. THE ONLY THING THAT STOPPED IT WAS TO PULL OVER AND TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART. I IMMEDIATELY CHECKED THE FLOOR MAT EACH TIME AND IT WAS MOUNTED SECURELY EXACTLY IN PLACE HOOKED ON THE MOUNTS. THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES, COMPLETELY RANDOMLY. I TOOK THE CAR IN TO BE SERVICED AT TOYOTA OF BERKELEY ON 2/2/10 AND WAS TOLD THAT UNTIL THE CAR DID THIS ON A "FREQUENT" BASIS THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT TOYOTA COULD DO. HE CHECKED THE LOG FOR WARNING LIGHTS AND THERE WERE NO ENTRIES (I CHECKED THE DASH EACH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED, AND NO LIGHTS WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON.) *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHENEVER THE FRONT WHEELS BEGAN TO SPIN IN ICY OR SNOWY CONDITIONS, THE ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. THE FAILURE OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES WHILE TRYING TO DRIVE UP A HILL OR AN INCLINED DRIVEWAY. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND WAS UNABLE TO FIND THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE ENGINE WOULD TURN OFF TO AVOID DAMAGING THE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS AND MAKING A LEFT TURN HE COULD FEEL THE TIRES SLIPPING. THE VEHICLE BEGIN TO STALL INTERMITTENTLY INCLUDING WHEN THE CONTACT MADE A LEFT TURN. THE CONTACT HAS NOT DRIVEN THE VEHICLE SINCE THE VEHICLE COULD STALL AND CAUSE A CRASH TO OCCUR. THE CONTACT ADVISED THE DEALER DURING A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS; HOWEVER, HE WAS ADVISED THAT THE MALFUNCTION IS DUE TO THE DESIGN OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AND HAS BEEN INOPERABLE FOR TWO MONTHS. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 3500.

THE FAILURE USUALLY OCCURRED WHEN THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKES RAPIDLY AND TRANSITIONED BACK TO THE CRUISE CONTROL WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH. THE VIN, ENGINE SIZE, NUMBER OF CYLINDERS, AND POWERTRAIN WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 7,500 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 6,500.

INDICATOR LIGHTS FLASHED. MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP STAYED ON. AT 2,644 MILES, 12 V. BATTERY DEAD & REPLACED. I WAS TOLD TO KEEP THE GAS TANK HALF OR A QUARTER FULL OR THE RESERVE GAS TANK WOULD CAUSE THE CAR TO RUN ON BATTERY. THE BATTERY MIGHT HAVE DIED BECAUSE THE CAR SAT TOO LONG BEFORE IT WAS SOLD/AT 8,879 MILES, I WENT IN. AFTER FILLING THE GAS TANK & TAKING OUT THE NOZZLE, GAS SPEWED & BUBBLED OUT. THE CAR STALLED WHILE DRIVING SLOWLY & WHILE IN PARK. INDICATOR LIGHTS FLASHED. THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP AND MASTER WARNING LIGHTS STAYED ON. IT TOOK 5 MIN. TO TURN OFF THE CAR. I STARTED THE CAR. THOSE LIGHTS STAYED ON. I WAS TOLD I LEFT THE "TRUNK DOOR" OPEN & RAN DOWN THE BATTERY. (NOT TRUE.) THERE IS A GASKET AROUND THE ACCESS HOLE AND IF A PERSON "IS A LITTLE BIT OFF," THE GAS WILL REGURGITATE. (I WAS NOT " OFF" & DID NOT TOP OFF THE TANK.) THEY REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER. THE GAS TANK HAD NOT BEEN FILLED SO I KNEW THEY DID NOT FILL THE GAS TANK AND TRY TO RECREATE THE SITUATION AS THEY SAID THEY WOULD. I BOUGHT GAS AT A DIFFERENT PUMP. I STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT. I COULD FEEL A LOSS OF POWER IN THE CAR. WHEN I PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND ON 3 TIMES BEFORE IT WOULD MOVE. IT CREPT SLOWLY THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AS THE TRAFFIC SIGNAL TURNED RED. I TOOK THE CAR IN AT 8,936 MILES. I WAS TOLD IF MY PROBLEM IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE BATTERY THAT WAS TAKEN OUT OF MY CAR, IT IS NOT AT REPAIR PERSON'S RESPONSIBILITY BECAUSE HE DID NOT TOUCH MY BATTERY. WHEN A BATTERY IS DISCONNECTED FOR A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME, IF SOMETHING IS NOT RESET, IT COULD CAUSE PROBLEMS. THEN, HE SAID NO TROUBLE FOUND/MY CAR STALLED AND/OR HAD A LOSS OF POWER. I TOOK IT IN AT 9,014 MILES. NO TROUBLE FOUND. I WAS TOLD THAT MY PROBLEMS COULD HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A FAULTY GAS PUMP OVERFILLING MY TANK. THE GAS STATION IS NEW. THE MANAGER SAID THE PUMPS WERE INSPECTED. IF THERE WERE A FAULTY PUMP, EVERYONE WOULD HAVE PROBLEMS. *TR
