The contact owned a 2007 Toyota Prius. The contact stated while driving approximately 30-35 MPH, the vehicle in front of her slammed on the brakes, causing her vehicle to crash into its rear end. The air bags failed to deploy. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact sustained a severe whiplash. The contact was able to exit the vehicle through the front passenger side window. The contact stated that her son transported her to the hospital, where she was informed that she had sustained a concussion and neck abrasion injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a collision shop, where it was totaled. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was approximately a 180,000. The VIN was not not available.

STEERING WHEEL DEFROSTER CONTROL PANEL STOPPED WORKING, ALL THE REST OF THE CONTROLS ARE OPERATIONAL EXCEPT THE DEFROSTER PORTION. SEEMS THE CLOCKSPRING IS MALFUNCTIONING. AS THE SAME PART IS PROVIDING SIGNAL FOR ALL THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS AND POSSIBLY THE AIRBAG, THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN TO ME.

I WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT IN WHICH I REAR-ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME ON A ALMOST EMPTY CITY STREET. THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME STOPPED ABRUPTLY AND WAS STATIONARY AT THE TIME OF THE COLLISION. I WAS GOING APPROXIMATELY 25-30 MPH AT THE TIME OF IMPACT, AS I DID NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BRAKE EFFECTIVELY. MY CAR WAS TOTALED IN THE COLLISION. I SUFFERED BRUISING TO MY STERNUM AND KNEES AS WELL AS SEVERE BRUISING ON MY KNEES AND HIP. MY AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, AND THIS WAS REMARKED UPON BY THE FIREFIGHTERS, PARAMEDICS AND POLICE THAT RESPONDED TO THE ACCIDENT. I AM CONCERNED BECAUSE THIS IS THE SECOND TOYOTA I HAVE BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT WITH IN WHICH THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE LAST ACCIDENT WAS IN A 1996 TOYOTA COROLLA IN A HIGH SPEED ACCIDENT ON THE FREEWAY IN WHICH MY CAR HAD LOCKED ONTO THE CAR THAT HAD HIT ME AND WE SPUN OUT ON THE FREEWAY. AGAIN MY CAR WAS TOTALED AND NO AIRBAG DEPLOYED. AFTER DOING RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, IT WOULD SEEM THIS IS A CONTINUING PROBLEM WITH TOYOTAS, WHICH SHOULD BE REMEDIED AS A MATTER OF PUBLIC SAFETY.

"TAKATA RECALL" IN AUG 2014 I WAS INVOLVED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION WHERE MY AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. ONE OF THE INJURIES SUSTAINED WAS A FRACTURE TO MY RIGHT FIFTH METACARPAL BONE CAUSED BY PROJECTILE SHRAPNEL, MOST LIKELY FROM THE DEPLOYED AIR BAG. THE SHRAPNEL WAS 2MM X 10MM, BLACK AND APPEARED TO BE PLASTIC PER THE OPERATIVE REPORT BY THE SURGEON WHO REMOVED IT. FOR SUCH A LIGHT PIECE OF PLASTIC TO CAUSE THIS EXTENSIVE A COMMINUTED FRACTURE, THE PROJECTILE MUST HAVE BEEN TRAVELING AT A VERY HIGH VELOCITY MOST LIKELY CAUSED BY THE AIR BAG'S EXPLOSIVE FOR [XXX] 'INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).'

I SUSTAINED CONSIDERABLE CONTUSIONS TO MY RIBS, ELBOW, KNEES, AND ANKLES. I HAVE A TORN TENDON IN MY RIGHT ANKLE, AND WHIPLASH SEVERE ENOUGH TO REQUIRE PHYSICAL THERAPY. THE CAR RUSHED OVER A MOUND OF ICE AND SNOW, JUMPED THE CURB, RUSHED FORWARD BETWEEN A WALL AND A TREE, NARROWLY MISSING IT, AND CRASHED INTO A PARKED TOYOTA TRUCK FACING OUTWARD FROM THE CURB. MY PRIUS HIT THE HEAVY TRUCK WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO KNOCK IT SIX FEET FOR THEIR NORTH AND THREE FEET TO THE WEST. AFTER IMPACT, THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO MAKE A LOT OF NOISE, A SOUND I'VE NEVER HEARD BEFORE IN SEVEN YEARS OF DRIVING THE CAR. IT WAS ATTEMPTING TO SURGE PAST THE TRUCK, WHICH I BELIEVE CAUSED THE MOST DAMAGE TO THE FRONT LEFT BUMPER OF THE CAR. ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK ON THE FRONTAGE ROAD ALONG I-5. MY TIRES HIT THE GRAVEL AND I LOST CONTROL. I WENT THROUGH THE GRASS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD DOWN A DIP AND LANDED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR ON THE RAILROAD TRACKS. I BEGAN TO ROLL AND ROLLED THE CAR FROM SIDE TO SIDE AT LEAST 15 TIMES. A ROW OF TREES IS WHAT STOPPED ME. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING AND I WAS STILL BUCKLED IN THE DRIVERS SEAT. I HAD TO KICK OUT THE WINDSHIELD IN ORDER TO GET OUT OF THE CAR. I WENT TO EMERGENCY THAT NIGHT WHERE I WAS X-RAYED AND CHECKED OUT. I ENDED UP WITH ONLY MAJOR BRUISING ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY BODY, THE CHP THAT RESPONDED WAS SURE I WAS DEAD. MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS WAS INVOLVED IN SIDE IMPACT COLLISION. THE CAR WAS HIT AT THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT WHEEL. DAMAGE WAS FROM THE DRIVERS DOOR AROUND TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR. THE CAR THAT HIT ME WAS GOING AROUND 40 MILES PER HOUR. MY CAR WAS TOTALED, AND I SPENT 3 NIGHTS IN THE HOSPITAL WITH A PARTIALLY COLLAPSED LUNG, BROKEN RIB, AND A CONCUSSION. NEITHER THE SIDE OR FRONT AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. I HAVE POST CONCUSSION SYNDROME BECAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT. I BELIEVE THAT MY CONCUSSION WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH LESS HAD THE AIRBAG DEPLOYED. I AM A PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER, AND I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO RETURN TO WORK FOR MONTH, AND THE DOCTORS SAY IT COULD BE AT LEAST A FEW MORE WEEKS. SHE HIT THE OTHER VEHICLE TURNED DID A 180 DEGREE SPIN AND THEN HIT THE CAR AGAIN THE CARS LOCKED ON TO EACH OTHER AND WENT OVER THE CENTER DIVIDER ON THE STREET FACING ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THE DRIVER WAS INJURED AND SHE WAS TRANSPORTED BY AMBULANCE TO A HOSPITAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO CONFIRMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE AIR BAGS ONLY DEPLOY WHEN THE WINDSHIELD BREAKS. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 8,000. I WAS IN A 2007 PRIUS ENTERING A CROSS STREET AND WAS HIT BROAD-SIDE ON THE LEFT DRIVERS SIDE FROM THE MIDDLE OF MY CAR TO THE LEFT FRONT END. THE DAMAGE WAS SEVERE AND I WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL SUFFERING FROM CUTS AND SEVERE BRUISES TO MY RIBS AND BACKSIDE. THE SIDE CURTAINS DID NOT DEPLOY AND I WAS TOLD BY TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS THAT I WAS NOT HIT HARD ENOUGH. I AM NOT TOTALLY RECOVERED FROM THIS ACCIDENT AS YET AND IT WILL PROBABLY TAKE A FEW MORE WEEKS. I WAS ALSO TOLD BY TOYOTA THERE HAVEN'T BEEN ANY PROBLEMS WITH SIDE-CURTAINS AND THERE WERE NO OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS KIND OF FAILURE. MULTIPLE TIMES MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS AIRBAG SYSTEM HAS FAILED DUE TO A PASSENGER WEIGHING OVER 250 POUNDS SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN THE PASSENGER WIGGLES WHEN GETTING IN OR HAVING A WALLET IN HIS BACK POCKET. AFTER HE GETS IN THE RED AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT COMES ON AND IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE AIRBAG IS THEN DISABLED. THE AIRBAG LIGHT WILL REMAIN ON UNTIL THE DEALER SERVICES THE CAR. THE DEALER?S HAND DIAGNOSTIC TOOL ONCE REPORTED THAT THE CODE WAS ACCIDENT DETECTED, BUT I CHALLENGED THIS AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE CODE ACTUALLY MEANS OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM FAIL. UNHOOKING THE 12V BATTERY WILL CLEAR THE SYSTEM AND SUPPOSEDLY MAKE THE AIRBAG WORK PROPERLY AGAIN. THE PROBLEM WILL REOCCUR WHEN THE SAME PASSENGER GETS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. *TR

HELLO THERE. I AM ALMOST 8 MONTHS PREGNANT AND I DRIVE A PRIUS. I CALLED THE DEALER AND THE TOYOTA COMPANY TO GET MY DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG DISABLED UNTIL I HAVE MY CHILD. I BELIEVE THAT IF THE BAG WENT OFF IT WOULD POSE HARM TO MY FETUS, ESPECIALLY AS I CARRY HIGH IN MY TORSO. THEY SAID THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DO SO, AS PER REGULATION. I FIND THIS HORRID, ESPECIALLY WITH THE HOLIDAY SEASON AND THE USUAL RISE OF IMPAIRED DRIVERS. I CAN BE AS SAFE AS I CAN BUT IF SOMEONE HITS ME AND THE AIRBAG DEPLOYS, IT HAS A GREAT POTENTIAL OF DOING MORE [POSSIBLY UNNECESSARY] DAMAGE TO MY BABY THAN THE CRASH ALONE.
