Your car makes a loud grinding or rattling noise for a few seconds when you start it in cold weather. This happens because a spring inside the intake camshaft gear isn't pushing hard enough to lock the gear in place, causing it to rattle inside its housing. Over time, if the gear rattles too forcefully, it could break and send metal pieces throughout the engine, potentially causing severe engine damage.
