Your 1997 Corolla has been in Florida's warm, humid climate for ten years. Toyota has acknowledged airbag problems that occur in humid conditions, but your car was originally sold in Missouri where the climate is different. You're concerned that the airbag may not function properly due to the years of humidity exposure, regardless of where the car was initially sold. You should have the airbag system inspected and potentially replaced if corrosion or moisture damage is found.

NHTSA #: 10606820

Filed: Mar 2009

Your check engine light came on, and when you braked hard while driving under 30 mph, your front airbags deployed suddenly without any crash occurring. You sustained minor cuts on your arm from the deployment. The dealer estimates replacing just the driver's side airbag will cost over $1,000.

NHTSA #: 10261740
Vehicle Speed Control3 issues
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
CrashFiled: Mar 2010

Your car's accelerator pedal suddenly engaged on its own while you were stopped at a traffic light, causing the vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably. You were unable to stop the car and it crashed into a building and ended up in a ditch. This sudden unintended acceleration problem may require inspection and repair of the accelerator pedal assembly, throttle cable, or electronic throttle control system.

NHTSA #: 10316670
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Nov 2009

Your cruise control suddenly accelerated your car from 65 mph to 80 mph and wouldn't slow down, even when you repeatedly applied the brakes. You had to turn off the engine to regain control, and the excessive braking damaged your entire brake system. Your mechanic disabled the cruise control to prevent this from happening again.

NHTSA #: 10290932
highVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Mar 2010

Your car suddenly accelerates when cruise control is active and engaged at a set speed. This has happened about 4 times over three years, and you can stop it by turning off the cruise control. The problem occurs sometimes right after setting the cruise speed and sometimes when you accelerate while cruise control is already set. The fix will likely involve inspecting or replacing the cruise control system components.

NHTSA #: 10319446
Fuel System, Gasoline2 issues
criticalFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
Filed: Aug 2011

Your fuel filler tube may be made of unprotected steel that corrodes quickly in areas with salt spray (like northern states or seaside regions). As the tube rusts and weakens, fuel can leak both when you're filling up and while driving—potentially losing about 3 gallons per tank. In a rear collision, the corroded tube could break away from its clamps, creating a serious fire hazard. The clamps holding the tube may be accelerating rust by trapping corrosive materials against the steel. Fixing this would likely require replacing the fuel filler tube with a more corrosion-resistant design or adding protective shielding.

NHTSA #: 10421535
highFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
Filed: Sep 2011

Your fuel tank cracked and leaked after your car hit a speed bump hard enough for the tank to strike the pavement. You noticed the fuel tank lacks a protective shield underneath to prevent this type of damage. The vehicle was not repaired or taken to a dealer. Repairing this will likely require replacing the fuel tank and possibly installing additional undercarriage protection.

highUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Jan 2019

Your driver's side door won't open manually, and you can't access it to fix the broken electric door lock. This prevents you from being able to repair the locking mechanism. The repair will likely involve removing the door panel to access and replace the electric door lock actuator.

You're inquiring about a recall related to gas pedal entrapment on your 1997 Toyota Corolla. This issue involves the gas pedal potentially getting stuck or caught, which could affect vehicle acceleration control. A technician would need to inspect and likely replace or adjust the gas pedal assembly and surrounding components.

Seat Belts2 issues
highSEAT BELTS
Filed: Jul 2015

Your driver's side seat belt is stuck and won't pull out. You've had this same problem before and paid over $300 to have the seat belt completely replaced about a year or two ago, but the replacement belt is now stuck again. This suggests there may be an underlying design issue causing the seat belt mechanism to fail repeatedly. The fix will likely involve replacing the entire seat belt assembly or repairing the retractor mechanism that keeps the belt from extending properly.

NHTSA #: 10731876
highSEAT BELTS
Filed: Apr 2010

Your seat belt release button got stuck and wouldn't unlatch while you were driving at 50 mph. Even after pulling over and stopping, the button still wouldn't open, forcing you to use a screwdriver to release it. The Toyota dealer recommended replacing the release button mechanism.

Filed: Oct 2016

Your front passenger tire suddenly lost its tread while driving at highway speed on I-475, causing you to lose control and forcing you off the road. The tire had been installed in 2013 with proper maintenance and less than 30,000 miles of use. The tread separation caused significant damage including a destroyed wheel well, body damage, broken headlight, and wiper fluid system damage.

NHTSA #: 10920129
Service Brakes1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Jul 2013

While driving on the highway and attempting to brake, your brake pedal went completely to the floor with no warning and the brakes failed to stop the vehicle. You had to pump the brake pedal repeatedly and use the hand brake to finally slow down and stop. Your mechanic found that both rear brake lines were uncoated and rusted, allowing brake fluid to leak where the lines were clamped to the undercarriage. The fix will involve replacing the brake lines with properly coated replacements to prevent future corrosion and fluid loss.

Tires1 issue
criticalTIRES
CrashFiled: Mar 2011

Your Corolla's rear tires completely deflated and separated from the rims while driving on the highway, causing you to lose control of the vehicle. You attempted to pull onto the right shoulder but couldn't regain control, resulting in the car striking a guardrail and spinning into the center lane. The cause of the tire failure was not determined.

CrashFiled: Mar 2010

While driving at 45 mph, your shoe heel became stuck in the front driver's seat recline lever, preventing you from braking. This caused a crash with another vehicle that resulted in two injuries and total vehicle loss. The seat recline mechanism may need to be inspected or replaced to prevent the lever from catching footwear.

Filed: May 2018

You discovered through an OBD2 scanner that your car has unresolved recalls, including one for airbags that may deploy unexpectedly and another for front struts with inadequate shock absorption. You're unsure whether these recalls have been addressed by the previous owner. You should contact your Toyota dealer or NHTSA with your VIN to verify recall status and determine if the airbag and suspension repairs need to be completed.

Steering,tires1 issue
highSTEERING,TIRES
Filed: Sep 2015

While driving at 65 mph, you felt vibration in the steering wheel and your front passenger tire blew out. After the blowout, your steering wheel became very difficult to turn and required extra force to steer. You had previously noticed bubbles forming on the sidewalls of your front and rear passenger tires. The issue may require tire replacement and a steering system inspection to restore normal steering response.

NHTSA #: 10777736
Fuel System, Gasoline,equipment1 issue
highFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,EQUIPMENT
Filed: Feb 2011

Your gas tank keeps cracking and failing, requiring replacement multiple times within just six months. You believe this is a manufacturing defect rather than normal wear and tear. The repair will likely involve replacing the fuel tank with a new one, and potentially inspecting the fuel tank mounting or support system to prevent repeated failures.

NHTSA #: 10384230
Power Train1 issue
highPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Feb 2009

About two weeks after having your transmission flushed, your car suddenly stopped while driving with strong vibrations beforehand. A repair shop found that the differential (transfer case) had no oil inside and a broken bearing that damaged the transmission, requiring a complete rebuild. The transmission flush shop claims the seal between the transmission and differential may have failed due to age, causing the oil to leak out over time, though you suspect they may have accidentally drained the differential during the service.
