Your 2018 Camry's automatic braking system only watches the road ahead and doesn't monitor cars behind you. When a car ahead stopped suddenly, your car braked hard on its own — even though you had safe following distance and were more worried about a tailgating vehicle behind you. This sudden braking forced the car behind you to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid hitting you, creating a dangerous situation the system didn't anticipate. The system resets to "on" every time you start the car, making it inconvenient to disable.

Your brake power assist system failed because the vacuum pump stopped working. You noticed the problem gradually — at first inconsistent brake assist and light knocking sounds, which worsened over time into loud knocking and frequent brake error messages. The dealership and Toyota declined to cover the repair under warranty despite this being a known issue with an active service bulletin, leaving you with a repair bill over $1,800. The fix will require replacing the failed vacuum pump and possibly inspecting the brake assist system.

While driving out of my neighborhood at a low speed, the vehicle’s brakes suddenly stopped responding. I pressed the brake pedal multiple times, but it felt soft and failed to slow or stop the car as expected. I had to rely on the parking brake to bring the vehicle to a stop safely. Fortunately, there were no injuries or collisions, but this created a serious safety risk for myself and others. There were no prior warning lights or error messages before the incident. After researching, I discovered that my vehicle model and year have been associated with a known braking issue, as described in a recall for certain 2018–2019 Toyota Camry vehicles related to a vacuum pump or braking system malfunction. I took the vehicle to an authorized Toyota dealer immediately after the incident. The dealer confirmed the brake vacuum pump had failed, matching the symptoms described in the existing recall for other vehicles of the same model and year. However, they stated that my specific VIN was not included in the recall and refused to cover the repair under warranty or recall service. As a result, I was forced to pay over $1,200 out of pocket to fix a problem that is clearly related to the same known defect.
Vehicle cut off at a stop light twice
Pre-Collision system malfunction, secondary collision system malfunction along with check engine. It appears to be a trend with 2018 Toyota Camry XSE and higher model. I found that many people that own this model vehicle is experiencing the same issue even after going to a Toyota dealer and the issue still persist.
Low breaking power
LOW BRAKING POWER MESSAGE IS ON AND BRAKE TO FLOOR AND VEHICLE DOES NOT BRAKE PROPERLY CAUSE: DIAGNOSED CONCERN, FOUND VACCUM PUMP NOT PRODUCING VACCUM CAUSING CONCERN, INSPECTED AND FOUND VACCUM PUMP BROKEN AND CAMSHAFT BROKEN, PIECES BROKEN OFF INSIDE ENGINE. STATES LOW BRAKING POWER MESSAGE IS ON AND BRAKE PEDAL DROPS TO FLOOR AND VEHICLE DOES NOT BRAKE PROPERLY
I am reporting a brake failure issue that matches the symptoms described in NHTSA Campaign Number 19V-544 (Toyota recall for brake booster vacuum pump failure). My 2018 Camry has experienced loss of brake assist, making it difficult to stop safely and requiring excessive pedal pressure. Despite these symptoms and the known recall for this issue, my VIN is not currently included. This raises concerns that the recall scope was too limited and that my vehicle should be included. I have contacted both the dealer and Toyota corporate, and I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this defect further and consider expanding the recall. This is a serious safety issue.
The vehicle will not start and is showing a warning message , " Low Braking Power Stop in a Safe Place See Owner's Manual".
I am the owner of a 2018 Toyota Camry purchased 08/31/2018. Toyota recalled 2018 Camry models built between 01/16/2017 and 09/13/2018 for a brake problem (internal campaign reference code JOK/JLD). My vehicle falls within this period but seems to not be included in the recall. I am writing to you because I have had at least six occasions where when parking the car and going very slowly the vehicle doesn't seem to want to stop. Recently, I could not stop the vehicle and it was stopped by a cement barrier and bush. I have been told in the past by the dealer (Morristown Toyota) that there is no problem. Is it possible that my vehicle should have been included in the recall but was accidentally omitted.
I was driving my 2018 Toyota Camry SE and the brakes went out on me. I managed to keep pumping the brake and slowly apply the emergency brake to bring the vehicle to a stop. After a look by a mechanic, it turned out that the problem was with the brake vacuum pump. The internal parts were completely destroyed. I had to go to a Toyota dealership (Longo Toyota of Prosper) to get a replacement part. I purchased the part for $691.85 and had somebody install it for me. I later found out that NHTSA had issued a recall on this EXACT part for my vehicle after the incident and TOYOTA failed to inform me of this issue. To follow up with the recall, I took the vehicle to Toyota, and they did NOTHING to the vehicle and just checked it off from their recall list. The reason I am filing a complaint is because TOYOTA is refusing to reimburse me for the part that was part of a recall. I filed 2 claims in which I provided them with the receipt and bank statements showing that I purchased the part from a TOYOTA dealership. Now, they are claiming that the reason they denied my claim is because I did not provide them with a written letter stating HOW the repair was done, even though a Toyota dealership took a look at the part as part of the recall process and told me that everything looked good. I got the person that worked on the vehicle to write a lengthy letter stating precisely how he did the work. I am trying to file another reimbursement claim request, but now their Reimbursement page is down and has been down for at least a week now. I have attempted to try to submit the claim through my laptop, phone, and my iPad and all are giving me the same error message. It is absurd that Toyota almost got me killed and now is refusing to even reimburse me for something they had to cover to begin with. I will provide you will all the documents that I've been trying to submit to Toyota. At this point, I don't know how to get them to acknowlege this issue.

Low Braking power light came on
While driving on the highway brakes became squishy and the brake warning light came one. Dash displayed “Low brake power. Stop in a safe place” message.
On 9/6/24 I pulled up to the gas pump and couldn’t stop. My brake light and warning light came on. I called Toyota and one of their service team members said it was covered because it was part of a repair kit that was completed on 9/2023. They then said that they did a recall repair at that time which involved the brake vacuum pump. I was not told this at the time. Now they say that this has failed and they refuse to fix it. I had no issues with my brakes until now. I haven’t seen any recalls on this car and I feel that Toyota don’t want to stand by there work. They were only repairing two sensors and they changed my rear brakes.
I’m filing a complaint because I had scheduled a recall and maintanance appt problably a year or two ago. On the day of, a few hours later I am told the recall can not be fullfilled because the car part was unavailable and had to be ordered. I was told I would get a call once the part came to the shop. I was sent home in my car never got a call back for the shop to fullfill the recall. Moving forward about two months ago I was driving with one of my children when the breaks suddenly stopped working. At the moment I didnt know what was going on so I had called a tow truck a few times until AAA body shop mentioned it might be a recall. Meanwhile I spending money for towing the car and work AAA body shop did. Im very upset because it was a danger to me to my child and whoever I put in that car. I find it unexplainable how I was let go with my car knowing that there was a recall for brakes. This is the reason why I’m filing acomplaint.
I was driving my car when a light came on the dash board with sign stating low brake power. I had to pull over as the brake became stiff and stopped working.
I was driving down a dirt road about 30 mph when my vehicle wouldn’t come to a stop when braking. the master warning light popped up on my dash, next to the word ‘BRAKE’ in all red letters. on my dash also read ‘Low Braking Power. Stop in a safe place. see owners manual’.(photo is attatched, sorry it’s blurry i was trembling) no other warning signs or messages were on my dash prior to the incident. this happened VERY suddenly. luckily the incident happened when i wasn’t going very fast. had it happened 5 minutes prior when i was going about 75 mph down a narrow fm road, i probably wouldn’t be here to explain what happened. I could have crashed my car, hit someone else, there is numerous possibilities that could have happened. I thank God for watching over me and my child. i will be contacting the dealership tomorrow to see what can be done.

The cars "Brake Power Low" warning light illuminated on the dash. This was covered as the Brake Vacuum pump for another 2018 Camry that we have, but is not a recall for our other Camry. I am taking it in to Servco Hawaii to diagnose the issue, but again, this was the same issue that our other Camry had. The brake is spongy, and I checked the brake fluid to ensure that it was topped off. This was the first time that I noticed the brakes being spongy.

I have notice for the past year when I’m driving the car around the city around 15-30mph the emergency auto braking system alarm sounds and shows on my dash board when I have nobody in front of me luckily the car doesn’t brake at all but is not normal for it to do that it just happens randomly maybe this year alone it happen 5 times. Nobody safety was put at risk the car doesn’t brake or anything but it just sounds the alarm to brake, like 100% of the time is a low speeds. I haven’t taken it to the dealer, and I have no warning lights nothing at all is just random.
I was driving my car and out of nowhere my brakes stopped working I was really scared because I didn’t know what was going on thanks God I didn’t have an accident when the car stopped I check the cluster and it said “ breaking power low stop in a safe place” I look it up on the internet and it said that the problem is that the vacuum pump assembly isn’t working and that the Toyota Camry 2018 thro 2023 they all have that problem “recall” I was wondering if my car qualifies to get that part for free
Turned on the car Drove about 30 seconds and car states that secondary pre collision emergency brake and it just stops on a busy street With no other signs of defect ever . My vehicle goes to the dealership constantly and is very well taken care of
On [XXX] my daughter brought her 2018 Toyota Camry with 62k miles into Mike Calvert Toyota of Houston Texas for brake noise. The service department evaluated the car and recommended that the rear brakes be replaced. With that advice she had the work done. She left the dealership that day and went home and the car sat until the morning of [XXX]. She had some traveling to do out of town and returned that same day. She got within 45 miles of her destination when I got a frantic phone call from her saying that she was traveling at a high rate of speed and was unable to stop. The warning on the vehicle says Low Braking Power. I was able to have her put her hazard lights on a get to the shoulder where she couldn't get her speed below 10 miles per hour. She was able to use the E-break and an elevated surface to get the car to a safe spot some 45 miles away. We have made numerous attempts to get the dealership to tell us why this happened. Initially they stated that the calipers failed. After calling repeatedly we were told it was a defective part that was installed and they needed to get a new one in. The dealership refuses to answer any phone calls or emails. I have appealed to the GM on numerous occasions and the Owner with no replies. We need NHTSA to investigate whether this dealership is doing faulty work that jeopardizes lives or did Toyota fail to recall this vehicle and the issue is more wide spread. I fear for the public safety if the issue is more wide spread. This vehicle was not part recalled for brake issues. The VIN appears to be clear of those recalls. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Replaced brakes in June on the 19th, 23rd and my brakes are squeaking and goes all the way to the floor sometimes before my brakes actually works. I have take my car back to Toyota twice and they said nothing is wrong with my car. This is a safety hazard and needs to be addressed so it can be fixed IMMEDIATELY!!!
Low braking power message and
Low break power
Last May I took my 2018 Camry in due to "low braking Power" light coming on. Toyota informed me that it was part of a recall and they did not know how long it would take. It was over a month and they fixed the problem. Now a year later, the same problem is taking place. Again, "low braking power" signal is coming on.
Low brake pressure
Low braking power. Car couldn’t move
on Feb 20, 2023, during my evening lunch break about 7:30 pm, I drove my car to a nearby gas station to fill it. As I was attempting to back into place, my brakes froze and a "Low Braking Power" message appears in my dash and my car hit a pole because it would not stop. On Feb 21, 2023, I towed it to our family mechanic who informed me that there was a recall on this issue and to take it to a dealer instead. I had it towed to Temecula Valley Toyota. They offered me a rental car while they repaired the recall issue and sent a request to Toyota to repair the damage to my bumper from the loss of brake performance. I was told there would be no charge because it was a recall. They wanted a deposit of $100 since we only had a debit card not a credit card. on March 8, someone left a message on my voicemail saying Toyota said they were only paying for 2 days and they wanted to let us know they would be charging a substantial amount to our car. This time of the call was 4:48Pm. We called back at 4:55p and got no answer. I immediately checked my bank statement and I had been charged $675. Toyota has had my car since 2-21-23 and no info on its return. Customer Service Relation person called after we did an online complaint with Toyota, and also with a Toyota person at Toyota.com named Matthew. The Customer Relations person who called around 3-18 or 3-19 and said the case was with Toyota Legal. Its 3-28-23 and no information. We want our $675.00 back because we have auto insurance that covers rentals @ $51 per day. We have reported the accident to Farmer's who cannot access our car as long as its at Toyota. We have paid our note and have not had usage of our car and we want that car note returned as well.
2018 Camry XSE BRAKES GO ON WHILE ON DRIVE PRESSING ON THE BREAK WOULD BE A STRUGGLE WHEN DRIVING PADAL ON THE BRAKE WERE STIFF HARD TO STEP ON EVEN AFTER DEALERSHIP PROVIDED THE SERVICE FOR THE RECALL VEHICLE STILL HAD ISSUES AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY GO ON FOR NO REASON WHILE BACKING UP THE VEHICLE SENSORS ARE DETECTING HUMAN or ITEM THAT ARE NOT THERE. SCREEN ON VEHICLE MARKS SEE DEALERSHIP FOR MAINTANCE. 2 DAYS AFTER IT WAS HELD FOR 2WEEKS THERE FOR MAINTANCE.
Hello, for the recall on the brake assist, this was repaired at Brunswick Toyota on 7/8/2022. I have documentation I'd like to provide as evidence for this.
I was stopped at a stoplight with my foot on the brake when all of the sudden my car just started driving forwad. I step on brake harder and no response. I then pumped the brakes and still nothing. I was about to try the emergency brake but it was too late and my car hit the truck in front of me.
The brake vacuum pump failed while driving through the city. The part failed coming off a red light at an intersection. Lost braking power as soon as I drove off. On the notification screen, I received a "Low Braking Power" signal.
Vehicle was in stop and go traffic on I94 when pressing the brake pedal it failed. Second try with both feet and pedal again went to the floor with no resulting stopping power. Found article Toyota has begun recall of Camry's due to failure of Power Boost. Warnings did not show up on display until vehicle was about 10 feet from another vehicle showing failure of ICS system and see dealer. Also another warning saying Advanced Ultrasonic Detecting Ranging System Malfunction regarding Intelligence Clearance Sonar and to see dealer.
When vehicle is stopped from slow speeds, the car lurches to a stop because the brakes grab much harder than the pressure being applied to the brake pedal would indicate. These touchy brakes can alarm passengers in the vehicle and pedestrians near the vehicle causing them to be frightened that the vehicle hit something. Toyota developed a fix for this problem which is described by T-SB-0033-20 but the fix was not published until 4/8/20 (less than 6 months before my 36 month warranty expired) and was only applicable to vehicles in warranty so when I discovered the fix, my car was out of warranty and Toyota refuses to perform the fix at no charge.

I got a recall notice earlier in January 2022. On January 16, 2022 as I am driving to work a message appeared on my dash saying Low Braking power Stop in a safe place see owners manual. I haven't driven my car since and I keep contacting the local dealership since it happened and they keep telling me the remedy suppose to be in February and still nothing. It is now March and still no remedy for this. I am getting a little frustrated because I am not able to drive my car. My husband and I are sharing a vehicle but it is sometimes difficult. Please please let me know when a remedy will be available. I am hoping really soon. I am paying monthly for a car that I can't even drive for a couple of months now. The notice in the attachment picture came on the dash on January 15 while she was driving to work. Consumer haven’t driven her car since.

Braking assist Non-power assisted brake will remain functional Safety Risk a sudden loss of power braking assist while driving could increase the Risk of a crash backup camera Rc unavailable the braking provides power brake assist when the driver depresses the brake pedal Specific components in a part of this system can could lead to sudden loss of power.
Abrupt activation of brakes: new vehicle to present. When first backing out of garage or parking spot, at a slow-creeping speed, without use of throttle pedal, attempting to control backward motion with light brake pedal the vehicle's brakes will abruptly active fully halting rearward motion. Further rearward motion requires driver to completely remove foot from brake pedal but any attempt to control rearward speed by feathering brake pedal often causes a repeat of the abrupt brake activation. This cycle repeats the full length of the vehicle within the garage and the length of the driveway to the street , additionally 5 to 6 times the vehicle length. The problem manifests after a lengthy parking, in both forward and reverse directions. There is often an accompanying discernible mechanical actuator sound coming from the engine compartment that I associate as a Trigger to expect the abrupt braking. The obstacle warning may alarm in the garage but acknowledging it with OK does not effect the abrupt braking cycle which continues the length of the driveway, clear of any obstructions. To be clear, this problem occurs at very slow speeds, about 2 miles per hour. I have been told by the dealership mechanic that the brakes are designed to operate as conventional hydraulic brakes below 5 mph; this of course doesn't explain the actuator noise emanating from under the hood. Once the vehicle has been on the road, the brake's performance improves with only a slight tendency to grab when coming to a stop; It's cause to celebrate when the driver can successively make 5 smooth stops. This problem was experienced by 5 separate drivers, each of whom directly expressed dis-satisfaction. Possibly related to the abrupt braking described above is the sudden activation of the brakes and BRAKE warning in what would otherwise be a controlled stop behind a stopped vehicle at a red traffic light. There an association with: vehicle size -color- brake lite position/intensity.

My brakes don’t work. Brake pedal is all the way pushed in and brakes don’t respond. There is not breaking fluid leak or lack of fluid. This is major hazard as I can’t drive my vehicle
Brake booster failed 1 yr ago. At that time, I was told my car does not qualify for the recall because of the VIN batch. So repairs were made out of pocket. Now, I have a letter from Toyota stating I can get reimbursed for the parts and labor. Great! But when I follow the instructions from the letter to navigate the website, the final instruction states to click on "Submit Reimbursement Request". It does NOT exist. I called and spoke with Toyota, They were unaware of this issue. I'm not sure where to go from here. The repair was over $1600 and I had to hunt down the part myself. Due to the recall demand, local dealers did not have the part. A nightmare. I
Break booster vacuum pump needs to be replaced per the diagnostic at the Toyota dealership. My car would not completely start when I was trying to turn it on. The break pad became stiff, unable to press down and a warning message stated “low breaking power”, therefore the car would not turn on and it became not drivable. If this were to happen while I was driving on the road, not only would it put myself in a lot of danger but others as well due to not being able to break. Even though it is not a part of the 2018 Camry recall batch, it is the exact same issue, therefore it is definitely a manufacturing issue.

Brakes being difficult to press down randomly causing excess friction on my roters causing shaking/instability/ almost lost control.
The brakes just stopped working. Got a message on the screen about "Low Braking Power. Stop in a safe place". The engine stopped working and the pedal (brake) was very hard. Thank God I was able to stop and not crash. I checked all car stored codes\errors - no codes and the car running normally now. I know that the 2018 Camry had recall about the brake vacuum pump but somehow my car wasn't in a recall list. Thank you

Every car that i saw on the complaint list is at over 100 k, so once you hit the 100 k be very careful and by the way is a toyota camry 2018

BRAKES SQUEAL LOUDLY WHEN BACKING OUT OF SLOPED DRIVEWAY ON COLD MORNING. ALSO, LIGHT SHEET OF RUST ON EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR SURFACE OF ALL DISCS. SQUEAL GOES AWAY AFTER A SHORT WHILE (ABS WARM-UP ISSUE?), AND THE EXTERIOR RUST WENT AWAY AFTER A FEW DAYS OF USE. I'VE NEVER SEEN OR HEARD SUCH ON A NEW VEHICLE BEFORE (HAVE DRIVEN MULTIPLE NEW CARS OVER 40 YEARS).
VERY LOUD SCREECHING SOUND BRAKES MAKE EVERY TIME I REVERSE MY 2018 TOYOTA CAMRY XSE. THE SOUND IS SO LOUD MY ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD KNOWS WHEN I LEAVE MY HOME. DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS NORMAL. NOT SURE I CAN'T TRUST MY BRAKES.

ON 10K MILE CHECK-UP THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE, PRESUMABLY BECAUSE IT IS A COLD BRAKE PROBLEM. WILL MAKE COMPLAINT AGAIN AT 15K MILE CHECK AND GET IN WRITING THAT IT HAS BEEN RECEIVED.
MY BRAKES GRAB AND JERK AT LOW SPEEDS. ESPECIALLY WHEN I'M BACKING UP OR PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT. I'VE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAY THEY ARE FINE AND THE ISSUE IS NORMAL.
