AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.

Fix: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

Your passenger airbag system has a malfunction that causes the passenger airbag warning light to stay off even when a passenger is seated, and the passenger seatbelt warning light flashes continuously. This means the airbag may not deploy properly in a crash if needed. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the airbag control module and passenger detection sensors, and replacing any faulty components.

Your 2010 Camry's dashboard material is deteriorating — it's become sticky, shiny, and is melting or breaking down across the entire surface, with visible drips, bubbles, and erosion. The dashboard produces chemical fumes at higher temperatures and creates a haze on the windshield that can blind or distract you while driving. The area where the passenger airbag deploys from is also affected, which compromises the structural integrity of that critical safety component. A Toyota dealership service manager confirmed the problem in person and found an expired service program that would have covered a free replacement; a new dashboard costs over $3,100.

SRS WARNING LIGHT AND TRAC CONTROL WARNING LIGHT AND SEAT BELT WARNINGS FOR BOTH PASSENGER AND DRIVER FLASHING. I CHECKED ONLINE AND COULDNT FIGURE OUT THE CODES. I FIGURED OUT THAT THIS WAS BLOWING FUSE 29 ON THE CAR AS SOON AS THE IGNITION IS TURNED ON. I WENT TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC SHOP, ALI AUTOMOTIVE IN SANTA CLARA, CA. THEY READ THE CODES AND THE FAULTS DISPLAYED ARE THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR FAULT AND PASSENGER CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM FAULT (IF I RECALL CORRECTLY). AS THE AIR BAGS ARE NO LONGER ACTIVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THE FAULT CAME ON WHILE JUST AFTER TURNING INTO PARKING SPOT IN THE PARKING LOT AT THE CORNER OF LAWRENCE AND PROSPECT. THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THEY NEED TO CHECK THE VEHICLE BUT IT WAS LIKELY THE AIR BAG CLOCKSPRING IS SHORTING AS THEY'VE REPLACED THIS ON A NUMBER OF CARS. CHECKING ONLINE IT SEEMS THAT TOYOTA HAS A RECALL ON THE AIR BAG CLOCK SPRING ON SOME MODELS BUT I DIDNT SEE ONE OF THE CAMRY. ALSO A NUMBER OF REPORTS ONLINE OF CONSUMERS CHANGING THE CLOCKSPRINGS. SO THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON COMPLAINT AND A SAFETY HAZARD. PLEASE ASSIST TO INVESTIGATE ASAP. THIS CAR IS ALSO USED BY OUR TEENAGE SON AND I'D LIKE TO ENSURE THAT IT IS SAFE. THANK YOU.

I DID NOT TAKE A PHOTO. MY VEHICLE WAS TOTALED SO THERE MAY HAVE BEEN SOME DOCUMENTATION WITH INSURANCE COMPANY. I HAD NEW TIRES PUT ON MY CAR 10 DAYS EARLIER AND I BELIEVE MY TIRE PRESSURE MAINTENANCE SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONED. MY TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT WAS BLINKING AND I WAS UNABLE TO STOP MY CAR WHEN I APPROACHED A TRAFFIC LIGHT.

DURING A SHORT TRIP THE SRS LIGHT CAME ON. I DON'T RECALL EXACTLY WHEN THE LIGHT APPEARED, WHILE SITTING STILL OR WHEN I FIRST STARTED TO MOVE FORWARD AFTER BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. THE RESPONSE IS THAT WHILE NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE CAR PASSENGERS SHOULD FIRST SIT IN THE CAR AND BUCKLE THE SEAT BELT BEFORE THE KEY IS INSERTED INTO THE IGNITION. I HAVE CONTACT THE TOYOTA EXPERIENCE CENTER AND WHILE THEY FIRST AGREED THAT THIS IS NOT NORMAL THEY CONTACTED THE TOYOTA FIELD TECHNICIAN AND I WAS TOLD THAT MOVEMENT OF A PASSENGER IN THE SEAT CAN CAUSE THE (MALFUNCTION) SRS LIGHT TO COME ON WHICH DISABLES THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. I HAVE ASKED WHY THIS HAS NEVER OCCURRED DURING THE FIRST 3-1/2 YEARS OF OWNING THE CAR AND DON'T GET ANY ANSWER. THIS IS AN UNSAFE CONDITION AS THE SRS LIGHT CAN COME ON WHILE ON AN EXTENDED TRIP AND IF THERE IS AN ACCIDENT THE AIRBAGS WON'T DEPLOY. *TR

ON MY WAY TO WORK ON NEW YEARS EVE 2012 I LOST CONTROL OF MY 2010 TOYOTA CAMRY AND WENT OF THE ROAD AND HIT A TELEPHONE POLE AT ABOUT 30 MILES PER HOUR. I WAS KNOCKED UNCONCIOUS AND SUFFERED IMMEDIATELY NOTICABLE INJURIES TO MY FACE, ARMS, CHEST AND KNEES. THE POLICE SAID I WAS NOT WEARING MY SEATBELT AND NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AT ALL. I ALWAYS WEAR MY SEATBELT, NO MATTER WHAT! ON TOP OF THAT, THE DINGER THAT GOES OFF WHEN THERE IS NO SEATBELT ON IS VERY ANNOYING AND ALONE WOULD CAUSE ME TO PUT IT ON. THERE IS NO WAY I WOULD LISTEN TO A DINGER FOR A 45 MIN DRIVE TO WORK AND NOT PUT MY SEATBELT ON, AND I WAS 10 MINUTES FROM WORK WHEN IT HAPPENED. THE ONLY EXPLANATION IS THAT THE SEATBELT WAS CLIPPED ENOUGH TO TURN OFF THE DINGER BUT NOT ENOUGH TO LOCK BECAUSE MY INJURIES INDICATE THAT I DID NOT HAVE ANY BRUISING OR MARKS FROM A SEATBELT AND MY HEAD HAD CRACKED THE WINDSHIELD, WHICH WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE WITH A SEALTBELT THAT WORKED AND AN AIRBAG THAT DEPLOYED PROPERLY. THIS WAS THE SECOND ACCIDENT WHERE THIS CAR DID NOT DEPLOY THE AIRBAG. THE FIRST WAS A REAREND THAT SHOVED MY CAR INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AND NO AIRBAG DEPLOYED. AFTER INSURANCE LOOKED AT THE CAR, IT WAS DETERMINED IT WAS A TOTAL LOSS FROM THE DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END. *TR

I WAS IN AN ACCIDENT ON JULY 28 2011. I WAS IN A 2010 TOYOTA CAMRY DRIVING 40-45MILES AND A FORD F150 PICK-UP TRUCK TURNED IN FRONT OF ME. I HIT THE TRUCK ON ITS SIDE CAUSING IT TO FILP OVER. MY CAMRY SUSTAINED SEVERE FRONTAL DAMAGE THAT IT WAS DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS. MY AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. POLICE OFFICERS, FIRE DEPT AT THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT WERE ALL AMAZED THAT THE AIRBAGS HAD NOT DEPLOYED CONSIDERING THE DAMAGE TO THE CAR. THE BODY SHOP THAT THE CAR WAS INITIALLY TOWED TO MENTIONED THAT LOOKED LIKE THERE WERE FAULTY SENSORS THAT PREVENTED THE AIRBAGS FROM DEPLOYING. *TT

THE F-150 STRUCK MY RENTAL VEHICLE IN THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. THE F-150 THEN PUSHED THE CAMRY TO THE RIGHT OFF THE ROAD INTO A DEEP DRAINAGE DITCH ALONGSIDE THE HIGHWAY. THE CAMRY WENT FRONT FIRST INTO THE DITCH WALL SMASHING IN THE FRONT OF THE CAR. 3. THE VEHICLE I AM TOLD WAS FOUND TO BE "TOTALED". THEIR WAS A CREASE FROM THE INITIAL IMPACT FROM THE FRONT DRIVERS WHEEL WELL EXTENDING BACK TO THE PASSENGERS DOOR. THE FRONT BUMPER/LIGHTS WERE ALSO DESTROYED. THE CAR WAS TOWED AND TAKEN BACK INTO POSSESSION BY HERTZ RENTAL COMPANY. 4. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. 5. THIS ACCIDENT HAS RESULTED IN SUFFERING FROM MULTIPLE MEDICAL ISSUES. UPON INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE BY US ON THE FOLLOWING DAY WE DID NOTICE THAT THE RIGHT REAR TIRE HAD BLOWN OUT, I ASSUME THIS CAUSED THE ABRUPT VEERING TO THE RIGHT DESCRIBED ABOVE. MY SON HAD HIS SEAT BELT ON AND LUCKILY HAD ONLY MINOR INJURIES. MY CONCERN/QUESTION IS WHY THE AIR BAGS DID NOT GO OFF. THIS INCLUDES THE ONES BUILT INTO THE FRONT PILLARS AND THOSE ON THE SIDE DESIGNED TO PROTECT THE OCCUPANTS HEAD AND ARM, ETC.
