2019 Subaru Outback Wipers & Visibility Problems

I got in my car after a few hours of paddle boarding, and there was a large crack in the windshield (not even a chip prior to this) which started from the very bottom of the windshield. It cracked while it was just parked. I checked to see if someone had chipped it while driving by (unlikely in a small parking lot with such low speeds) but there are no chips.

Driving 60 MPH on freeway in Northern California for about 20 minutes. Ambient temperature about 50 degrees. Drove over a slight dip in road and hear a loud pop and my moonroof glass exploded outward.

Spontaneous crack of the front windshield, unsafe to drive for fear of collapse into car or during a collision.

Windshield cracked right down the middle for no reason. No accident, inclement weather, no trees or anything near the driveway

I was driving down the freeway and my windshield spontaneously cracked at the top middle edge and shot down almost halfway across the windshield. A rock on any other object did not hit my windshield. It just simply broke spontaneously.

Just put in a complaint on 3/6/20 for a windshield problem on our 2019 subaru outback. While driving today, four chips appeared on windshield after driving past work being done on the road. didn't even hear or see anything touch the windshield.

We have had to replace 2 windshields on our vehicle and 1 on a loaner while ours was in shop for window replacement. Also while our car was in shop having 2nd windshield replaced, they had to delay giving us our car back stating the windshield shattered while being installed. That is 4 windshields in 30,000 miles.

I had my windshield replaced in march 2019. Got a rock chip in the replaced windshield fixed under the warranty program through subaru. Three days later I come out and the fixed chip spread a foot across my windshield and is rapidly growing.

While driving on a highway I'm january with few other vehicles around a crack started to grow from the lower right passenger side of the windshield. It crawled to nearly 24 inches in length. We were never hit by a rock or any other debris.

However, Subaru has now refused to cover the second incident, even though it clearly follows the same pattern. There is no visible point of impact. The cracks appear to originate near the bottom edge of the windshield and spread rapidly. I park the vehicle in a safe residential area and have not driven over rough terrain or been involved in any accidents. I have also referenced a known class action lawsuit involving similar spontaneous cracking issues with windshields in Subaru vehicles, including the 2017–2020 Outback and Legacy models. This suggests a manufacturing or design defect affecting structural integrity. This issue creates a serious visibility and safety hazard for drivers and passengers, especially if the windshield fails further while the vehicle is in motion. Subaru’s failure to cover a known defect and repeated issue puts drivers at risk. I am requesting that the NHTSA investigate this recurring defect in Subaru windshields to determine whether a recall or broader corrective action is necessary.

On April 14, 2025, I experienced my fourth windshield break- others- 2 that were 3 months apart in 2023 and another in 2024. I do not know how this most recent crack occurred as I noticed it when I went to drive my car, which was parked inside my garage. I had driven 2 places earlier in the day with no signs of a crack and there were no noted strikes to the windshield during that time. I did ride on a highway the day prior, but did not hear any strikes to the windshield. The prior incidences I did hear something hit the windshield. I have been a car owner for decades and this is the first car I have ever had with any windshield crack. This complaint seems typical for this vehicle as many of the same issues were recently included in a class action lawsuit regarding a defect in the glass. Wile the 2019 model was not included for some reason, many NHTSA complaints from people with this model were included in this lawsuit so I certainly hope that NHTSA will seriously look into why these are a common occurrence for this vehicle.

Noticed a huge crack in my windshield this morning before leaving for work. Definitely some sort of stress fracture. Not from any kind of impact or rock chip. It was not there yesterday. This is a huge safety issue due to the suddenness and size of the crack right down the center of the windshield and then branching off to both the driver side view and the passenger side. Difficult to see while driving to work and very worried that the crack will continue to expand. I’m contacting the dealership where I purchased the car in June of 2024.

A crack in the windshield suddenly appeared with no apparent cause starting at the very upper edge about a third of the way across from the driver side and traveled about half way down and then turned to the right for about eight inches. It is available for inspection upon request. As of this date it has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. It has been reported to insurance representatives, but not inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. There was no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure.

Severe windshield cracking requiring replacement. 2 in 6 month period. 1st was November 2023. Extremely cold temperatures. Cracked directly above heater vents on both sides same time. I watched it go from outer lower edges and move all the way to the center, entire length of the shield. I did not see anything hit the windshield, but they were iced and snow covered. I felt the temperature difference outside compared to in the cabin may have caused the crack. 2nd occurred July 12 2024. Extreme heat ( 100 plus) air-conditioning blasting cold air. Low traffic, at least 4 car lengths between mine and the car ahead. I did not see any debris. I did hear a noise, and then watched the windshield crack from the same location (lower outside edge) this time only the passenger side. The crack started approximately 6 inches. The following morning that crack had moved past midway of the windshield. This is not normal for any other vehicle I have driven. I have been driving 45 years. I have had a rock hit the windshield, some large rocks. In only one case I suffered a chip that was fixed with resin. There is a problem (safety) with this windshield. Installation, glass, design flaw?? I don't know the cause, but It is hazardous. The dealer's mechanic that replaced the 1st one told me "it is a KNOWN issue for my model" someone needs to address and correct an issue that is known which could be catastrophic. I was driving 35 mph in November incident, and 70 mph in July. I can provide documentation re: 1st replacement. I did not take pictures of that one. I can provide photos of 2nd one. I have not done 2nd replacement. I may just trade it out. That is how concerning this issue is to me.

Windshield cracked spontaneously while parked, March 29, 2024. Temperature was approx 28°F. This was the second time in 11 months this has happened. Safelite technician said it was caused by faulty windshield heater. The first one I paid for the replacement, the second one was under warranty from Safelite. But was told if it happened again they would not be responsible.

My windshield has chipped and cracked 4 times in the 5 yrs that I've owned this car, purchased new. In the first three cases, a minor chip started cracking the windshield almost immediately. In the last case, which I haven't had repaired yet, there wasn't even a chip. The windshield seemed to just spontaneously crack. The glass shop for replacement #3 noted that the car is now rusting under the windshield. The car has only 39K miles on it.

The Windshield of my outback Subaru 2019 has cracked two times since I purchased the vehicle. Not caused by propelled items, accidents or vandalism, instead, these cracks originated from the center bottom part of the windshield suddenly and spread upwards.

Within a year, my windshield has cracked 4 times with Subaru glass. These cracks are huge coming from either the top or bottom. With the crack, I feel like the eyesight feature is not accurate therefore causing weird serving. So I do not feel safe leaving my lane assist on. I have had 3 Subaru glass and one safelite glass, and this seems to be a reoccurring issue. what is the point of getting it fixed if it'll just keep cracking.

When defroster was turned on, a crack began on the windshield at the bottom, left of middle. As the days went on, the crack continued to spread when heat was on or sun heated up the windshield. In 3 months it went from a 4 inch to a 10 inch crack that obstructed view. We just had it replaced after paying a $500 deductible, with no guarantee it won’t recur.

We own a 2019 outback, and have had the windshield replaced twice prior this event. Today May 22 around 4:19 PM no cars close to us while driving we had the front windshield spontaneously crack there was no impact there was no impact heard all we heard was like cracking sound I have seen online where Subaru is using an acoustic type of glass and people are reporting cracked windshields I would like to have this investigated furthermore I’d like to have Subaru repair my vehicle.

I have had to replace 2 windshields in 6 mos. I have never experienced this many damaged windshields. The offending incidents both took place on the highway.

I purchased my 2019 subaru outback on november 23, 2019. On february 15, 2020 on a cold winter morning I was driviing to work and turned on the defrost to high and the windshield just cracked. Currently, the crack has traveled from end to end on the windshield.

Windshield seemed to spontaneously crack while driving on a residential street at less than 20 MPH. I heard a pop, though I did not see anything hit the windshield, and a crack about 22 inches long immediately appeared on the left side of windshield. The crack is about halfway up, and starting on the left edge.

Mid way up on the passenger side, just like half the outback's I see on the road. 2014 and forward model years pitched the windshields at a lower angle, making the windshield opening in the body larger and more susceptible to flex when the frame racks going over bumps.

My wife and I driving home eastbound highway 50 and noticed small crack in windshield glass under windshield wiper. The windshield is cracked. I went out to my car on may 16 and on the front windshield there was a "y" shaped crack going up from the bottom middle of the windshield. When I went back outside on may 18, the crack had spread about 4 inches toward each side of the windshield.

Second spontaneous crack in 18 months.

The windshield spontaneously cracked from the mid-center of the windshield while parked. The crack began in october, 2019, less than a year after purchase. There was no impact causing damage and the crack began while the vehicle was parked.

Windshield has cracked for no apparent significant reason. This was noticed in the morning upon getting in the vehicle and starting to drive.

While parked over night in my suburban boston driveway the windshield developed a foot long crack up the middle from the bottom edge

Went to go start my vehicle that is parked outside in our parking lot complex, and it was about 15 degrees outside and their was frost on the whole front windshield. I opened the driver door to start the vehicle and noticed that there was frost on the bottom half inside of the front windshield as well. All other windows and doors had been closed.

Windshield cracked- started as a small crack and now has spread over the windshield

Front windshield cracked overnight while my 2019 subaru was sitting in driveway. Crack is at least about 18" long. It may have started from a rock/pebble hitting windshield while on the road, but I didn't hear any rocks or pebbles hit that side of windshield while commuting and crack was not present prior to parking my car for the night.

Was driving down the road in castle rock co. Nothing hit by windshield or anything. Next thing I know.

I was driving on the highway and heard a crack, then saw a large crack on my windshield! After the car had been parked, the crack continued to spread.

I was driving on the highway and a little pebble hit my windshield leaving a small chip (smaller than the size of a dime). I parked the car and within an hour, this chip kept growing into a large crack. Over only a couple days it had spread to crack all over the entire windshield.

Back in first week of january, I was commuting to work via interstate. There was a bump since the roads are uneven and going over the bridge, as soon I went over I heard a crack. I saw there was a crack on the windshield from the top of hood, up to front of the rearview mirror.

September 20, 2019. I was driving to work surrounded by an open field and nothing else. A spontaneous fault appeared in my windshield.

My windshield was cracked starting under the wiper blade, at the lower center of the windshield, and cracked upwards about 5 inches, and spilt in two different directions. One length about 9 inches and the other side about 12 inches, and the cracks seem to be extending. The car was parked in my driveway.

2019 subaru outback purchased december 2018, sand strike chipped and cracked the windshield within one month. This morning as we were driving down the street with no other traffic my wife noticed a crack forming and growing up from the bottom of the windshield on the passenger's side. I have owned my outback for 6 months. In that time I have had my windshield crack 2 times with no apparent damage. The first time was 2 weeks after ownership, driving down the highway, not impact from anything and it just cracked.

We sustained a cracked windshield from a small stone impact while traveling at 60mph on a multi-lane highway. The road and weather conditions were good, with no obvious debris on road, and only passenger cars in front and next to us suggesting stone may have come from another cars tire tread.

Vehicle had two spontaneous cracks within the first 1700 miles of use.

Less than 5 months old and the windshield randomly starting cracking on passenger side under viper. I have not known anything to hit the windshield. The crack has now moved over the center of the windshield.

Broken windshield. There has been no impact and there is no sign of impact yet my winshield on a 5 month old car is cracked. Its approximately 10 inches and circular from the top down behind the rearview mirror.

Windshield spontaneously cracked. Parked at a convenience store, nothing around the vehicle, came out and noticed a crack from the a post into the middle of the windshield. Happened on a saturday, attempted to call insurance company and was told I had to wait until monday.

I got a brand new subaru 2019 SUV in second week of may 2019. Car has around 5500 miles on it. Windshield developed a crack that I observed when I got into my car next morning.

At approximately 0900 central time on 8/16/2019 vehicle had a substantial 7+ inch crack descending from top of the windshield directly above and descending vertically down from near the driver eyesight camera.

Car was parked in covered car port overnight. In morning, a horizontal crack had appeared in front windshield. Crack is 18-24 inches long.

On two separate occasions, something was kicked up and hit the windshield of the vehicle. Both time an immediate crack was sent throught the windshield. Both times were on an highway, traveling about 45mph.

I got a new 2019 outback in december. I have barely driven it. I finally took my family out and my passenger window cracked in two places while we were parked.
