2017 Ram 1500 Engine Problems

EGR Cooler cracked @ 58,000 miles resulting in a disabled truck that has to be towed to the nearest dealership 20 miles away and 1 1/2 hours from our home two days before Christmas 2025. Thankfully my family was ok and the engine did not catch fire. The original EGR cooler was replaced by the manufacture under a recall at the end of 2020 @ 28,000 miles.

The EGR valve and EGR cooler went out and it caused the MAP sensor to melt and also caused the intake manifold to melt and if I didn’t shut the truck off it was going to catch on fire. And this truck has had this problem in the past due to a recall and it was repaired and it happened again on may 4th 2025

Driving truck down the road heard a loud pop, engine stalled. Found oil leaking under truck. Dealer said it’s a known issue with the engine and would not cover replacement cost.

Took to the shop explained that our EGR was replace at the fresno crystler dodge dealership with same OEM part not the new fix because it didn't exist they closed the account and now EGR went out again and they refuse to replace the original recalled part truck because it has been 4 years since replaced and is sitting in the north knox dodge dealer with the EGR completely malfunctioned leaking coolant blowing smoke and smells like it's about to catch fire and both dealerships refuse to replace the part

Also there is a new recall to reprogram the ECU to "band-aid" a potential failure of the timing reluctor ring.

RAM ENGINE FAILURE May 7, 2023 SUBJECT: Engine failure RAM 2017 ECO Diesel TO: whom it may concern: Tuesday April 25, 2023 while driving to Riverside California with my wife, daughter and two grandchildren in my 2017 ECO diesel, it began to overheat leading to my engine oil pressure immediately dropping to zero.

The plastic fan exploded and cut through the transmission lines causing the truck to stop moving and thousands of dollars in damage. While towing a 6500lb trailer, the fan was spinning at a high rate of speed when the plastic failed and broke apart in the engine bay causing damage to the paint, heat shield, and transmission lines.

On the 5.7liter Hemi engines the exhaust manifold bolts break into the block of the engine causing exhaust leak which can potentially get in the cab and cause injury or death. As well the heat shield bolts that cover the exhaust manifold break.

On start up makes a ticking noise. Upon further investigation noticed broken studs on exhaust manifold bolts. This causes an exhaust leak which may lead to possible fire.

The exhaust manifold bolt on the passenger side have broken off after 50,000 miles after normal wear and tear. Such has highway and city driving. This vehicle has never towed a trailer or overheated.

Why driving my 2017 ecodiesel truck with 38,500 miles on it, on highway 80 about 55 to 60 miles per hour my truck lost power. My wife notice smoke coming from the back passenger side tire thats the same place my exhuast tail pipe is on this truck,my first thought was I over heated when I lost power but that was not the case my temp was 208 degrees.

When the vehicle is cold the engine has a significant power lag and 'dead pedal' when you accelerate from a stop. It creates a significant risk as there is no power to accelerate and avoid oncoming cars or dangerous situations. Oven when pedal is all the way depressed the vehicle fails to accelerate.

After ecm reflash, now the vehicle will not accelerate for 3 seconds with engine cold. No power until delay time has passed then itll accel. Once engine is at operating temp it drives normally.

The Coolant liquid is absorved with no external leaking. There is an active Recall (19V-757, FCA Recall VB1) that the dealer said fits perfectly my vehicle but for some reason my VIN# is not included under the recall and they can not do anything unless I pay them.

Egr coolant system leaking

VIN [XXX] Recall “66A Loss of Crankshaft position”. Why is this recall only a software update and does not fix the issue causing the recall? The faulty part is the Tone Wheel and the delamination of the magnetic material on the wheel.

We have owned this vehicle for almost 3 years now and we have had to replace 2 sensors, the cruise control will intermittently no disengage when buttons are pushed or brake pushed, replaced the full pump, sometimes it will lose all power going down the road, HD to replace the fuse box because it was getting and started to melt, it will try to start and will just keep cranking until you slam on the gas, and the rear window leaks every time it rains.

I am reporting a recurring and well-documented issue involving broken exhaust manifold bolts on my 2017 Ram 1500 with the 5.7L HEMI engine. My truck has only 47,000 miles, and the driver-side manifold has already required repair once due to broken bolts.

I had the EGR recall completed but now the intake manifold is failing and I was told it could be damage from the cracked egr cooler. Dealership says none of it is under warranty.

Truck was consuming coolant and you could smell it but can't see a leak then the service electronic throttle control light came on a few weeks later with a code reading P0402. This was a recall and has been replaced but was replaced before they had the proper fix for it. Dropped it off at dodge dealer this morning for further diagnosis.

As of a week ago I was driving and had a message come up on my dash stating that the engine is running hot. After looking I noticed half the coolant was missing, so I added more. A few days later I decided to check and yet again it’s low, shortly later the check engine comes on.

Hello, I am one of the millions of confused Ram truck owners wondering why there has never been a recall issued on this terrible life threatening issue?! There was a loud ticking noise coming from the engine. Upon taking it to a service center is was diagnosed that 2 bolts from the passenger side exhaust manifold were sheared off due to the heat wrapping of the manifold. This happened a year before on the driver side which had 2 bolts as well sheared off from heat warping on the manifold.

Both exhaust manifolds cracked around 55k miles to include pins. Causes exhaust to leak into the cab.

Noticeable engine noise experienced with my Ram 1500 Eco diesel. My local dealer diagnosed the noise to be coming from the high pressure fuel pump that there is an open recall on for over a year. Dealer cannot make repairs without the parts available.

How did NHTSA miss this one? Engine exhaust manifold bolts broken leading to exhaust gases unknowingly getting into the cabin while driving which has also may be impacting my lungs. (I have a CT scan from MAYO to prove it.) This went on for at least 3 months.

While idling in line at a fuel station, my vehicle suddenly started shuddering and quickly followed up with a strange squeak that sounded like metal on metal contact from the lower portion of the engine. This happened on June 5th 2023 around noon timeframe. I was able to pull the vehicle into a parking spot where I turned the engine off and called for a tow truck.

This is my second Ram truck with this issue. My first truck was a 2014 1500 Big Horn and now I own a 2017 1500 Sport. The 2014 was in the shop 3 times for a manifold bolt breakage and the 2017 has been in the shop 2 times now for a manifold bolt break.

Dodge has failed to recognize an issue that is extremely prevelant in Americas Number one selling truck. The 2015-2020 models are all experiencing exhaust Manifold deformities/ Warpage that are causing the manifold bolts to snap at the engine resulting in the vehicle spewing untreated exhaust fumes both into the environment as well as the passenger compartment.

I just purchased my truck in November 2022 and noticed an audible ticking noise coming from the engine immediately after start-up. After having the vehicle inspected by an ASE mechanic, it was discovered that the manifold bolts had broken on each warped manifold which was likely causing the ticking sound.

There is a known issue called the hemi tick that is the result of broken bolts on the exhaust manifold. This is a dangerous exhaust leaks that happens on almost every Ram and nothing has been recalled. To make a safe vehicle people are paying thousands to fix this and Dodge knows it is an issue!

My Engine light turned on and vehicle kept overheating. Coolant levels we’re getting very high. Coolant was not cycling through the engine properly & needs new head gasket.

Engine blew up with no warning indicators on the dash. Engine oil was full and from what the dealer found it was a bearing either the crankshaft or rod. I've been without my truck for over 2 months and fiat chrysler doesn't know when a motor will be available.

Two right rear exhaust manifold bolts broke causing a potential exhaust leak into the cabin.

It’s the oil filter housing it’s made out of plastic and the heat of the engine cause the seals to leak oil mechanic said to upgrade it with an aluminum housing instead

3 bolts holding DPF and SCR together are known to fail and cause issues to the DEF wiring harness. All three bolts have failed on my truck which could cause the exhaust to fall apart while driving. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent center.

I CONTACTED LOCAL DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE PAST MONTHS (GOING BACK WELL INTO SUMMER IF NOT PRIOR) AND WAS ADVISED THAT PARTS WERE NOT YET AVAILABLE. I bought this truck and brought it home and was going through everything and found out that the oil didnt even reach the dipstick and it took 4 quarts to fill it up. There is a known problem with the 5.7l hemi engines having the exhaust manifold bolts break. This happened to me where the manifold separated from the engine and caused untreated exhaust gases to escape into the engine bay.

In motion, the engine seams to loose power when the transmission kicks down to passing gear for a short time then it picks up power. Feels almost like it takes time for the timing to catch up...... Can you help?
