ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.5L ENGINES MAY EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION AS A RESULT OF IMPROPER PERFORMANCE OF THE PISTON RINGS.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM OR ENGINE COMPUTER). YOUR VEHICLE WILL ALSO BE INSPECTED TO DETERMINE IF IT HAS BEEN CONSUMING ENGINE OIL AT A HIGHER THAN NORMAL RATE. IN A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF VEHICLES, ENGINE REPLACEMENT WILL BE NEEDED. ON JUNE 9, 2006, NISSAN NOTIFIED OWNERS OF THE POSSIBILITY OF EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION AND THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTAINING THE OIL AT A PROPER LEVEL. FOLLOW-UP LETTER TO OWNERS ADVISING THEM OF THE STATUS OF THE RECALL WAS SENT DURING AUGUST 2006. FOLLOWUP LETTER TO OWNERS WAS SENT ON NOVEMBER 15, 2006. ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.5L ENGINE, THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR CAN OVERHEAT CAUSING A BRIEF INTERRUPTION IN THE SIGNAL OUTPUT FROM THE SENSOR.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ECM FREE OF CHARGE. CERTAIN MY 2006 ALTIMAS WHICH HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY REMEDIED UNDER RECALL CAMPAIGN 06V223 (NISSAN R0606) ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL SINCE THE REPROGRAMMING FOR 06V223 ALSO INCLUDED THIS REPROGRAMMING. THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 31, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

While driving at 50 mph on the highway exit, your car suddenly lost power and wouldn't accelerate. You also lost power steering and brakes, and the dashboard went blank. After pulling over safely, the car wouldn't restart at first, but eventually started after several attempts. A diagnostic scan showed a crankshaft position sensor fault code, which matches a known manufacturer recall for this model year. The issue may require replacement of the crankshaft position sensor and related wiring.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 245,000.

THIS SPECIFIC 2006 NISSAN SENTRA SE-R SPEC-V AS WELL AS THE 2006 NISSAN ALTIMA BOTH USE THE SAME QR25DE ENGINES WITCH THESE ENGINES ARE HIGHLY PRONE TO EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION AT RAPID RATES. MY VEHICLE HAS GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE IT COMSUMES A QT OF OIL EVERY 150 MILES OR SO. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AS IT CAN LEAD TO ENGINE FIRES BECAUSE OF A FAILURE TO COOL THE ENGINE WHILE IT IS ON. THIS CAN ALSO PRODUCE A SIGNIFICANTLY LARGE PLOOM OF GREY/BLUE SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST BECAUSE OF LARGE AMOUNTS OF OIL BEING BURNED. THIS LARGE CLOUD OF EXHAUST ALMOST ACTS AS A SMOKE SCREEN TO DRIVERS BEHIND ME SOMETIMES BLOCKING VISION BECAUSE IT CAN BE SO LARGE, AS WELL AS ITS TOXIC IMPACTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT. IN CONCLUSION A FIRE HAZARD COUPLED WITH A LARGE TOXIC CLOUD IS A GROUND TO HAVE ALL NISSAN VEHICLES WITH THE QR25DE ENGINES WITH THE PRODUCTION YEARS OF 2006 AND BELOW TO BE RECALLED AS IT CAN BE POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS. I HAVE A 2006 NISSAN SENTRA S 1.8 L. I HAD THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR REPLACED A MONTH AGO DUE TO AN ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE LOSING POWER. IT HAPPENS MOSTLY AFTER THE ENGINE HAS REACHED A CERTAIN LEVEL OF HEAT. MY ISSUE RETURNED ONLY A FEW DAYS LATER AFTER THE REPLACEMENT. IT WILL COME CLOSE TO SHUTTING OFF SITTING AT A STOP SIGN OR STOP LIGHT. IT WILL ALSO LOSE ACCELERATION OVER 3000 RPM. IT WILL STOP RUNNING IF LEFT IN IDLE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. I NOTICED A SIMILAR RECALL ON THE 2.5L VERSION OF THE SAME VEHICLE. I CONTACTED NISSAN TO SEE IF IT WOULD BE COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL AND THEY REFUSED TO COVER IT. I HAVE TALKED TO OTHER OWNERS OF THE SAME MODEL AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME THEY HAVE REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP AND CPS MANY TIMES TO NO AVAIL. I BELIEVE THERE IS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE IN THIS CAR THAT COULD EASILY LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY IT ISN'T COVERED UNDER THE RECALL THAT AFFECTS THE SIMILAR 2.5L VERSION OF THE MODEL. MY VEHICLE IS AT 139,890 MILES. IT HAS HAD THE SENSOR REPLACED AT AROUND 75,000 MILES AND AROUND 100,000 MILES.

THIS IS IN REFERENCE TO NISSAN SERVICE BULLETIN NTB05-052A. I PURCHASED A 2006 NISSAN SENTRA 1.8S AUGUST 26, 2006. THE SUMMER OF 2007 I STARTED EXPERIENCING THE "LONG ENGINE CRANK TIME BEFORE START" ISSUE, AND HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE EVERY SUMMER SINCE (BUT ONLY DURING THE SUMMER). I CURRENTLY HAVE APPROXIMATELY 54,000 MILES ON MY NISSAN AND JUST RECENTLY LEARNED ABOUT THE SERVICE BULLETIN THAT WAS PUT OUT SEPTEMBER 8, 2006. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED ABOUT THIS BULLETIN ADVISING ME OF WHAT TO DO, EVEN AFTER INQUIRES OF MY ISSUE AT THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP. NISSAN NO LONGER SELLS THE REPAIR KIT (WHICH I'M LEARNING WASN'T A GUARANTEE FIX) AND I WOULD PROBABLY HAVE TO BUY A WHOLE NEW FUEL PUMP (THAT NISSAN HAS SUPPOSEDLY REDESIGNED). THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE FUEL PUMP ITSELF, BUT RATHER A "FAULTY" PART INSIDE OF THE FUEL PUMP. NISSAN SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING "FAULTY" PARTS AND ALSO KEEPING THOSE PARTS AVAILABLE AS LONG AS THAT PARTICULAR YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL VEHICLE ARE ON THE ROAD.

THERE WERE A TOTAL OF THREE DIFFERENT INCIDENTS ( SO FAR) OF THIS HAPPENING TO MY CAR. I HAD IT CHECKED BY A MECHANIC AND NOTHING COULD BE FOUND TO BE WRONG ( NO CODES CAME UP). I DID SOME RESEARCH AND DISCOVERED THAT NISSAN HAD RECALLED VEHICLES FOR THE SAME ISSUE ( CAM SHAFT AND CRANK SENSORS OVERHEATING) . I CALLED NISSAN AND WAS TOLD THAT EVEN THOUGH MY VEHICLE APPEARS TO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE IT IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. HOWEVER, IT IS PART OF THE MASSIVE AIRBAG RECALL WHICH MAKES THIS EVEN MORE OF A DEADLY CONCERN..NISSAN NEEDS TO RECALL ALL VIN NUMBERS THAT ARE HAVING THIS SHUT OFF ISSUE. WHEN I CALLED THEY WERE VERY STANDOFFISH AND UNHELPFUL. WHEN WE GOT IT TO THE MECHANIC SHOP THEY SAID IT WAS THE CRANK SHAFT SENSOR AND THE CAM SENSOR THAT HAS FAILED. THEY TOLD US THAT NISSAN CARS ARE BAD ABOUT DOING THIS. I WAS IN A DANGEROUS SPOT WITH LOTS OF TRAFFIC AND ROAD CONSTRUCTION FOR THIS TO HAPPEN AND THERE COULD OF BEEN A BAD ACCIDENT OVER THIS BUT THANKFULLY THERE WAS NOT. THE FOLLOWING COMPLAINT IS CONCERNING NHTSA CAMPAIGN # 07V527000 AND #06V223000 BOTH OF THESE RECALLS DEAL WITH THE AUTOMOBILE I OWN, A 2006 NISSAN SENTRA, WHICH I PURCHASED BRAND NEW IN MAY 2006. I HAVE BEEN HAVING MAJOR ISSUES OUT OF THE CRANKSHAFT AND CAMSHAFT SENSORS IN THE VEHICLE AND OIL INTAKE OVER THE LAST 18 MONTHS. THE CAR WOULD DIE WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND BECAME VERY HARD TO START AS WELL AS THE OIL INTAKE BECAME EXCESSIVE. AFTER 3 VISITS TO THE DEALERSHIPS AS WELL AS 3 VISITS TO LOCAL AUTO REPAIR SHOPS WITH ONLY TEMPORARY FIXES, I WAS AT LAST INFORMED AROUND MID DECEMBER 2012 BY ONE OF THE MECHANICS AT THE LOCAL SHOP THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON SIMILAR VEHICLES. I LOOKED THE INFORMATION UP AND WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THERE WAS A RECALL IN 2006 AND 2007 ON 2006 NISSAN SENTRAS. AFTER SPEAKING WITH NORTH AMERICAN NISSAN I LEARNED THAT THE RECALL WAS VIN SPECIFIC AND MY CAR, WHILE BEING THE SAME MAKE, MODEL, AND YEAR AS THE VEHICLES RECALLED, WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I SPOKE WITH A REGIONAL MANAGER OFF AND ON FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS WHO INFORMED ME IN THE END THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I EVEN HAD A DIAGNOSTIC RAN AT THE NORTH LITTLE ROCK NISSAN DEALERSHIP ON DECEMBER 21, 2012 THAT STATES "CRANKSHAFT, CAMSHAFT SENSORS MALFUNCTIONING BUT IN GOOD CONDITION, OIL EXTREMELY LOW(WHICH I JUST HAD IT CHANGED A FEW MONTHS AGO), AND POSSIBLE ECM PROBLEM...ALL THINGS STATED IN THE RECALL. I HAVE LOOKED ONLINE AND THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS SPECIFIC AUTOMOBILE REGARDLESS OF VIN NUMBER. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 81,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 86,000.

CONSUMER STATES ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND VEHICLE SUDDENLY SLOWED DOWN AND THEN STOPPED *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED SHE HAD TO TURN OFF THE VEHICLE AND THEN TURN IT BACK ON IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLE TO START AGAIN. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE VEHICLE NEEDED A NEW TP SENSOR. THE CONSUMER STATED THE TP SENSOR WAS REPLACED. HOWEVER, SHE CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS. *JB UPDATED 11/12/10.

A FEW WEEKS AGO MY CAR'S ENGINE STARTED DOING A STUTTERING THING WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD OR HIGHWAY. IT WOULD JUST DO IT OUT OF NO WHERE AND IT FELT LIKE THE ENGINE WAS ABOUT TO SHUT OFF BUT IT KEPT GOING. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER AND IT SHOWS CRANK POSITION SENSOR. I SEARCHED FOR THIS ONLINE AND FOUND THIS WAS A RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE YEAR, MODEL AND ENGINE TYPE. IT STATED THAT IT COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALING EXPECTING TO HAVE THIS FIXED UNDER THE RECALL BUT WAS INFORMED THAT MY VEHICLE'S VIN WAS NOT ON THE LIST OF AFFECTED VEHICLES AND IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED. MY ENGINE IS STILL DOING THE STUTTER THING BECAUSE I HAVE NOT HAD IT FIXED YET AND THE MANUFACTURER WILL NOT FIX IT UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE THEY SAY MY VEHICLE WAS NOT AFFECTED EVEN THOUGH IT OBVIOUSLY WAS AFFECTED. *TR

I HAVE AN 2006 NISSAN SENTRA AND I BOUGHT IT USED WITH 3000 MILES SON IT. A COUPLE MONTHS LATER THE BRAKES WOULD SQUEAK AND THE ENGINE WOULD MAKE TICKING SOUND. I TOOK IT IN TO SANTA MONICA NISSAN 5 TIMES AND THEN THE FINALLY FIXED THE PROBLEM. THEY REPLACED THE BRAKE PADS AND FOR A 4 MONTH OLD CAR IT SHOULDN'T NEED BRAKES. THE BRAKES DON'T MAKE ANY NOISE BUT THE ENGINE STILL MAKES TICKING SOUND BUT NISSAN DOES THE SAME REMEDY EVERY TIME, CHANGE THE ENGINE BELTS. APPARENTLY THAT'S NOT WORKING AND WHEN I CONTACTED NISSAN THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE BUT I WAS ON HOLD FOR 1 HOUR AND THEN I HUNG UP. NISSAN NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS. REMEMBER THE BRAKES ARE FNE NOW ITS JUST THE ENGINE THAT MAKES TICKING SOUNDS. THEY BETER FIX THIS. *JB
