Your hood suddenly flew open while driving on the freeway at 60 mph, completely blocking your view and forcing you to pull over. You had to manually bend the fenders back to close the hood. Even though the hood latch was previously recalled and inspected by the dealer, it failed anyway, and the dealer claims Nissan won't cover repairs to the hood and fenders.

Your 2013 Nissan Altima has a defective hood latch that can corrode and fail, which is covered by a safety recall. When you took your car to a Nissan dealership for the recall repair, they refused to complete it because the hood release cable (which broke due to the faulty latch binding) prevents them from opening the hood. The dealership is demanding you pay for cable repairs before they'll perform the free recall fix. Nissan's customer service has sided with the dealership and won't authorize the recall repair at no cost. The fix would involve replacing the defective hood latch assembly and hood release cable, which should be covered under the safety recall at no charge to you.

While driving on a highway at 65 mph, the hood of the car completely opened. When attempting to close it, The latch that holds the hood wouldn't hold it at all. There were no warning lights, when I called the dealership they said that because there were no recalls on it currently, they couldn't do anything. The hood completely blinded us and dented the roof and sides of our car.

The contact owns a 2013 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact stated that the wheels were misaligned and had detached. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with a detached passenger’s side rear lower control arm due to corrosion. The contact was informed that the passenger’s side rear lower control arm needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Additionally, the contact was advised that due to the corrosion, the driver's side rear lower control arm would soon need to be replaced as well. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was 124,000.

I have contacted 2 dealerships about fixing the recall and nobody will call me back to schedule to fix. All they say is they will talk to the shop manager, and I never hear back. Now the hood is constantly stuck or not opening.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The mechanic confirmed that the control arm had fractured. The contact was informed that the control arm needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000. The VIN was unavailable.

While driving at 35mph on a city road the car hood flew up open & smashed into the windshield despite their supposed fix of hood latch spring being replaced & assembly lubricated by the Nissan dealership in Aug 2021 due to a Nissan hood latch recall (NHTSA recall 16V-029) in response to a class action lawsuit. At highway speeds, this would have seriously compromised human lives. In this case, neither the primary hood latch lever or fuel door release lever had been pulled open by the driver just prior to the incident; yet the hood flew open without warning. (Hoods have primary latches located inside the vehicles, then secondary latches located under the hoods. Primary hood latches in the cars are located too close to the fuel door latches that might cause drivers to accidentally unlatch the hoods instead of the fuel doors. Then once the primary hood latch is pulled in the Altima, the secondary latch under the hood fails to hold the hood down, allowing the Altima hood to open while driving.) No warning lights or messages came on. The car was not drivable & was towed to the Nissan dealership where it is currently pending repairs estimate $5234.58. At this time, Nissan Motors accepts no liability for this incident; clearly shifting the blame again. Nissan Motors has issued multiple (2014, 2015, 2016, 2020, 2022interim) hood latch recalls in response to this problem in various Nissan models 2013-2018, the most recent in 2022 (still in progress). Design and manufacturing defects allegedly cause the hoods to open while driving at any speed. According to the Altima class action lawsuit, Nissan blames the problems on multiple sources but still can’t properly repair the cars. The Altima hood latch systems are allegedly not strong enough to perform in real-world conditions and aren’t up to industry standards used for more than 100 years. The return springs are also allegedly too weak, as are the locking systems which prevent the hoods from securely latching.

I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40MPH ON A SECONDARY HIGHWAY WITH A GOOD DEAL OF TRAFFIC WHEN THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED WITH MY 2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. IT WAS TERRIFYING. THE HOOD IS DENTED, CHIPPED PAINT, BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT UPPER FENDERS ARE BENT, AND HINGES ARE NO LONGER RELIABLE. THE RUBBER ON THE SIDES OF THE WINDSHIELD LIFTED AND SEPARATION OF THE UPPER FENDERS ON BOTH SIDES ALONG RIGHT AND LEFT SIDE OF WINDSHIELD. I WAS LUCKILY DRIVING STRAIGHT IN THE SUBURBS OF NY, NOT MUCH TRAFFIC AT THE TIME.

LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN AND PEEK UNDER THE BOTTOM PORTION OF THE HOOD TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. MY WINDSHIELD WAS CRACKED, BOTH SIDE FENDERS WERE BENT UP/ SLIGHTLY DISPLACED, THE ROOF WAS DENTED, INSIDE THE CAR THE CEILING SPEAKER/ SUNGLASS CONSOLE CAME CRASHING DOWN AND MY HOOD WAS DENTED AND HAVING TROUBLE STAYING SHUT. I MANAGED TO SECURE IT DOWN AND DROVE SLOWLY TO EXIT 20. I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED AT AN AUTO SHOP NEAR BY AND THE OWNERS FIRST WORDS WERE, "LOOKING AT YOUR CAR, I CAN TELL YOU THIS IS EXACTLY HOW PEOPLE GET KILLED IN MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS". I AM NOT SURPRISED. HAD I NOT BEEN ABLE TO SEE OR SAFELY SLOW DOWN, I MAY BE DEAD. THE SHOP OWNER SHOWED HOW THE SPRAINED HINGES ALLOW THE HOOD TO GO ALL THE WAY BACK CAUSING WINDSHIELD DAMAGE MAINLY DUE TO THE SECONDARY HOOD LATCH NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. HE DID SPRAY SOME WD 40 ON THE LATCH TO GET IT TO FUNCTION A LITTLE BETTER; HE STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SAFE AND WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DRIVING IT. THE DAMAGE WAS ESTIMATED AT $4000.

HAVE A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA, LOW MILEAGE. PULLING OUT OF DRIVEWAY AND NOTICED THE BACK END OF CAR WAS SWERVING AS IF I WAS ON ICE. I PULLED OVER TIRE WAS NOT FLAT AND NOTHING WAS STUCK BY THE TIRE. NO ICE WAS ON THE ROAD. I PULLED DOWN A LITTLE FURTHER ON RODE AND THE RIGHT REAR END COLLAPSED. THE TIRE WAS SITTING BENT OUTWARD . WHEN I LOOKED UNDER THE CAR A METAL BAR WAS CRACKED IN HALF. I CALLED MY SON IN LAW WHO IS FAMILIAR WITH CAR REPAIR AND HE AND A MECHANIC STATED IT WAS THE RIGHT REAR CONTROL ARM THAT HAD HUGE AMOUNT OF CORROSION AND HAD BROKEN IN HALF. I CALLED NISSAN DEALER IN WAUSAU WISCONSIN AND THEY STATED NO RECALLS OR SERVICE ACTION IS IN PLACE. HAD I GONE 5 MINUTES MORE DOWN THE ROAD I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY AT 65 MILES AND HOUR AND BELIEVE I WOULD HAVE ROLLED THE CAR AND BEEN IN THE DITCH. I USUALLY DRIVE MY 2 GRANDCHILDREN IN THE CAR WITH ME BUT TODAY THANK GOD THEY WERE AT HOME. I FOUND THRU YOUR WEBSITE THAT NISSAN HAS BEEN AWARE OF THIS FOR SOMETIME. THIS IS A HORRIFIC FINDING . THE PROBLEM WE ENCOUNTERED WAS, WHEN LEAVING TO GO TO THE MOVIES, WE HEARD A LARGE BANG WENT TO SEE IF SOMETHING WAS UNDER THE CAR. NEXT WE DROVE A FEW FEET AND HEARD A DRAGGING NOISE. UPON INSPECTION THE REAR TIRE WAS OUT OF LINE. WHEN CHECKING THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR, WE WERE TAKEN BACK BY WHAT WE SAW. THE ENTIRE PART OF THE CAR WAS RUSTED AND THE FRAME HAD RUSTED AWAY FROM THE MAIN PART OF THE CAR. WE HAD GONE OUT THE NIGHT BEFORE AND WERE ON THE HIGHWAY GOING AT LEAST 50 MPH, HAD THIS HAPPENED THEN WE WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. THAT NIGHT WE WERE HEADING TOWARD THE HIGHWAY TO GO TO THE MOVIES. I CAN'T BELIEVE THE CONDITION OF THE CAR. THIS CAR IS KEPT IN THE GARAGE AND THE UNDERSIDE HAD BEEN HOSED DOWN TO KEEP THE SALT FROM HARMING THE UNDERSIDE. I HAVE LOOKED INTO THIS AND FOUND THESE CARS HAVE HAD MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE RUST UNDERNEATH THESE CARS. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR YEARS. SOME AROUND 2005 AND SOME EVEN OLDER THAT THAT. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY THERE HADN'T HAD A RECALL IN REGARDS TO THIS COMPLETE RUST PROBLEM ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THESE CARS. I CONTACTED THE NHTSA AND REPORTED THE ISSUE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL REPAIR HAD NOT BEEN DONE AS PER THEIR RECORDS. I THEN CONTACTED NISSAN TO INFORM THEM OF THE ISSUE AND THEY SAID THAT THE RECALL REPAIRS HAD ACTUALLY BEEN COMPLETED EARLIER THIS YEAR BY A NISSAN DEALER IN FLORIDA (WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM A CAR LOT IN FLORIDA IN OCTOBER OF 2016). AFTER A DISCUSSION WITH NISSAN CUSTOMER RELATIONS THEY TOWED THE VEHICLE TO ONE OF THEIR LOCAL DEALERS FOR INSPECTION (12/30/16). THEIR INVESTIGATION FOUND THAT THE REPLACED SECONDARY LATCH HAD FAILED THEREFORE ALLOWING THE HOOD TO FLY OPEN. I AM DEEPLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE. I NOTIFIED MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THEY REFUSED TO HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM. I CALLED NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS WHICH ALSO DENIED MY REQUEST TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE. IT APPEARS THAT THE DASHBOARD MATERIAL THAT IS USED WAS NOT PROPERLY TESTED FOR HIGHER TEMPERATURES OR THAT THIS IS SIMPLY A DEFECTIVE PART. THE RESIDUE ON THE SURFACE OF THE DASHBOARD COULD ALSO BE A HEALTH HAZARD AS THE DASHBOARD IS CLEARLY DEGRADING AND MAY BE EMITTING FUMES WITHIN THE CABIN. I ALSO SUSPECT THAT LEFT UNTREATED, THIS MELTING DASHBOARD HAS THE POTENTIAL TO IMPACT THE DEPLOYMENT OF AIRBAGS WITHIN THE VEHICLE. I EXPECT THAT NISSAN ADDRESSES THESE CONCERNS AND OFFERS A SOLUTION TO THIS MANUFACTURING DEFECT BEFORE IT CAUSES AN ACCIDENT.

THE IMPACT OF THE HOOD FLYING OPEN BENT BACK METAL NEAR THE WINDSHIELD ON BOTH FENDERS AND THE BUMPER WAS SCRAPED HITTING A CURB OR SOMETHING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. DUE TO THE EARLY HOUR THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT OR INJURY AS NO OTHER CARS WERE ON THE ROAD. IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED 15 MINUTES LATER, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY GOING 60 MPH. PHONE CALLS WERE MADE TO NISSAN AND AS WELL, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO COCHRAN NISSAN (DORMONT, PA). IN BOTH INSTANCES WE WERE TOLD THAT THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH THE HOOD LATCH AND NISSAN WOULD NOT PAY FOR ANY REPAIRS. ODDLY THOUGH, THE DEALERSHIP WAS WILLING TO PROVIDE US A NEW HOOD LATCH AT NO COST (WOULD HAVE TO PAY LABOR TO INSTALL). I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY. THEIR ADJUSTER CLEARLY FOUND FAULT WITH THE HOOD LATCH AND IN AN UNSCIENTIFIC TEST THAT HE PERFORMED, THE HOOD FAILED 9 OUT OF 9 TIMES. CALLS WERE AGAIN MADE TO NISSAN WITH THIS INFORMATION AND WE WERE TOLD 'SORRY'. THEY WERE NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGES TO THE HOOD, BOTH FENDERS AND FRONT BUMPER. EVEN THOUGH WE WERE INFORMING THEM OF ALL THE REPORTS WE HAD FOUND ON THE INTERNET OF THE SAME THING HAPPENING ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH 2013 NISSAN ALTIMAS. WE WERE TOLD THAT MOST LIKELY WHAT HAPPENED WAS THE HOOD RELEASE WAS USED INSTEAD OF THE GAS TANK DOOR RELEASE, AS THESE 2 RELEASES ARE RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER. WHEN THE LEVER IS PULLED THE HOOD UNLOCKS. HOWEVER, THE SAFETY DOESN'T CATCH. YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUSH THE HATCH. I AM NOW TERRIFIED TO DRIVE MY NEW CAR I JUST BOUGHT 6 MONTHS AGO. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT HOOD INDEPENDENTLY BECAME UNLATCHED. THE CONTACT CLOSED THE HOOD AND PROCEEDED TO DRIVE. AS SOON AS THE VEHICLE REACHED 70 MPH, THE HOOD ABRUPTLY OPENED AND FLEW INTO THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. THE CONTACT HAD TO STICK HIS HEAD OUT THE DRIVER'S WINDOW IN ORDER TO SEE THE ROADWAY AND SAFELY MANEUVER THE VEHICLE TO THE SHOULDER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY WERE UNABLE TO UNLATCH THE HOOD. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO ADVISED THAT THE SAFETY LATCH WAS DEFECTIVE AND STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE HOOD, SIDE PANELS AND THE ROOF NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,200.

THE TOP OF THE PLASTIC DASHBOARD HAS A VERY SHINY STICKY OIL LIKE SUBSTANCE AT MIGRATES TO AND COATS THE SURFACE CAUSING AN EXTREME GLARE ON THE WINDSHIELD IMPAIRING VISIBILITY. IN ADDITION, THIS SUBSTANCE OUTGASSES AND CONDENSES ON THE INSIDE SURFACE OF THE WINDSHIELD AS A MILKY HAZE WHICH FURTHER INCREASES THE IMPAIRED VISIBILITY. THIS CONDITION ALSO AFFECTS THE REAR DECK PLASTIC AS WELL. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT A DEFECTIVE BATCH OF PLASTICIZER, OR AN IMPROPER RATIO WAS USED DURING THE FABRICATION OF THE AFFECTED PARTS CAUSING EXCESSIVE MIGRATION OF THE PLASTICIZER TO THE SURFACE. THE MANUFACTURE IS AWARE OF AND ACKNOWLEDGES THIS PROBLEM HOWEVER, NO FIX OR SOLUTION IS FORTHCOMING. ON MAY 26, 2014 APPROX 9:30AM WHILE DRIVING AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEED IN EASTERN PA. IN MY 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5 SL, WE HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE AN EXTREMELY LOUD GUN SHOT TYPE SOUND RIGHT ABOVE THE CAR ROOF. AFTER SLOWING DOWN AND VISIBLY SHAKEN INCLUDING MY 2 OCCUPANTS WE SLOWLY PULLING BACK THE SUNROOF LINER THAT WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME. IT WAS NOTICED THE ENTIRE SUNROOF HAD BLOWN OUT OF THE CAR ONTO THE HIGHWAY AND TRUNK AREA. THE REMAINING GLASS WAS BULGED OUTWARD LIKE THE GLASS WAS PUSHED OUTWARD FROM INSIDE. THERE WAS NO INDICATION WHATSOEVER OF IMPACT FROM OUTSIDE THE CAR. THE ROOF, TRUNK AND REAR SPOILER WERE COVERED IN SMALL SHARDS OF GLASS WITH MANY NOTICEABLE DEEP SCRATCHES FROM THE GLASS IMPACT. WE STOPPED AT THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP IN WILKES BARRE, PA AND SHOWED THE DEALERSHIP THE PROBLEM WE JUST ENCOUNTERED. THE DEALERSHIP CLEANED AND COVERED THE DAMAGED SUNROOF AND ADVISED US TO DRIVE SLOWLY HOME UNTIL YOU COULD CONTACT YOUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THEY COULD GIVE ME NO REASON WHY THIS HAPPENED OR HAD NEVER HEARD OR SEEN THIS PROBLEM. I NOTIFIED MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP WHEN I GOT HOME AND BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE. I WAS ADVISED FROM MY DEALERSHIP AFTER THEY CLAIMED THEY CONTACTED NISSAN MOTORS AND THE LOCAL NISSAN AREA REP. THAT THEY COULD NOT GIVE ME ANY REASON WHY THIS WOULD HAPPEN. THEY TOLD ME THEY USUALLY DON'T COVER GLASS BREAKAGE BUT CALLED IT A GOOD WILL GESTURE AND WOULD REPLACE THE SMASHED SUNROOF AT NO CHARGE BUT REFUSED TO FIX THE DAMAGED PAINT THAT WAS CAUSED FROM THE GLASS HITTING THE ROOF, TRUNK AND SPOILER SURFACE. *TR

I WENT TO GAS STATION TO FILL MY LAWN MOWER GAS CAN. I THOUGHT I OPENED THE TRUNK WHERE THE CAN WAS STORED. IT DIDN'T OPEN SO I RE-CLICKED THE LATCH. TRUNK OPENED. GOT BACK ON THE ROAD, SMALL TOWN, NO TRAFFIC AND MY HOOD FLEW OPEN AND BACK AGAINST THE WINDSHIELD. I MAY HAVE INADVERTENTLY HIT THE HOOD LATCH THE 1ST TIME-NOT SURE BUT REGARDLESS, THE SECONDARY CATCH SHOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS AT 25 - 30 MPH. WHAT IF I HAD BEEN ON EXPRESSWAY? NO DAMAGE TO ME BUT $2100 DAMAGE TO CAR. I AM INSURED. THEY ARE REPLACING THE FENDERS WHERE THEY WERE TORQUED BACKWARD, THE HINGES WHERE SPRUNG, AND THE LATCH MECHANISM BECAUSE UNSURE WHY SECONDARY LATCH DID NOT HOLD. WAS AT NISSAN DEALER WITHIN PAST MONTH IN CINCINNATI AND HOOD HAS NOT BEEN OPENED - NO INKLING ANYTHING WRONG. I DON'T FEEL THIS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH DEALER AS I HAVE DRIVEN NUMEROUS MILES SINCE AT 65-70 MPH.
