Component: SUSPENSION
NISSAN IS RECALLING 1,018 MY 2008 ALTIMA VEHICLES. THE LEFT SIDE FRONT SUSPENSION TRANSVERSE LINK BOLT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN TIGHTENED TO SPECIFICATION. THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE BOLT TO BECOME LOOSE WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN.
Risk: IF THE BOLT WERE TO COME OUT, THE DRIVER MAY EXPERIENCE DIFFICULTY CONTROLLING THE DIRECTION OF THE VEHICLE WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL TIGHTEN THE TRANSVERSE LINK BOLT TO SPECIFICATION FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 11, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

A VARISTOR IN THE OCS CONTROL UNIT LOCATED IN THE PASSENGER SEAT CUSHION MAY HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED OUT OF SPECIFICATION. UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, THIS COULD CAUSE AN INTERRUPTION OF SIGNAL BETWEEN THE OCS AND THE AIR BAG CONTROL UNIT (ACU).
Risk: THIS COULD RESULT IN THE PASSENGER AIR BAG BEING SUPPRESSED WHICH COULD FAIL TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL TEST THE SIGNAL BETWEEN THE OCS AND ACU SYSTEMS USING A SPECIAL TOOL TO CHECK THAT IT IS FUNCTIONING AS DESIGNED. IF NECESSARY, THE SEAT CUSHION (CONTAINING OCS HARDWARE) WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE MANUFACTURED TO SPECIFICATION. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 4, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261 OR INFINITI AT 1-800-662-6200.

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES THAT HAVE HAD THE BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) REPLACED DURING SERVICE AT A DEALERSHIP, THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) MAY HAVE BEEN INADVERTENTLY DEACTIVATED DUE TO AN ISSUE WITH THE DEALER SERVICE SOFTWARE. IF THE TPMS IS TURNED OFF, IT WOULD NOT ALERT THE DRIVER TO A DECREASE IN THE TIRE PRESSURE AS DESIGNED.
Risk: DRIVING ON UNDER-INFLATED TIRES IS UNSAFE AND COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL CHECK THE TPMS FUNCTION AND REACTIVATE IT IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 18, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Your dashboard is melting and becoming sticky from heat exposure, which creates a dangerous glare that reduces your visibility while driving. This glare has already caused you to nearly miss seeing a vehicle on the road, forcing you to swerve to avoid a collision. Fixing this typically involves replacing the dashboard pad or applying a protective dashboard cover to prevent further deterioration.

Your air conditioning system required three separate repairs for the same problem. The evaporator and heater core had to be replaced twice, along with other AC system repairs. Nissan refused to cover the evaporator repair under warranty despite the repeated failures. Fixing this typically involves replacing the evaporator core and heater core components, which requires removing interior panels to access the HVAC system.

Your dashboard is melting, cracking, and degrading significantly, which the previous owner tried to hide with a dashboard mat. This is a known issue affecting 2008 Nissan Altimas that has been the subject of safety complaints and a class action lawsuit. The deteriorating dashboard may affect visibility and could impact your car's resale value. Addressing this would likely require dashboard replacement or professional repair.

Air Bags →3 issues
Your passenger airbag off indicator light stays on constantly when someone sits in the passenger seat and won't turn off. Later, your dashboard airbag warning light began flashing in a pattern (1 long, 5 short flashes) with no apparent reason. This suggests a problem with the airbag system's passenger weight sensor or the airbag control module that needs diagnostic attention.

Your passenger air bag warning light has been on for 2 years, and despite testing, the air bag system keeps showing an error code specifically for the passenger side. While all the air bag systems test fine otherwise, the warning light indicates a potential issue with the passenger air bag sensor or wiring. A technician will need to diagnose and repair the passenger air bag sensor, wiring, or control module to clear the error code.

Your passenger airbag warning light is blinking, and a repair shop diagnosed a faulty Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor that needs replacement. The diagnostic code B1018 appeared, which indicates a problem with the sensor that detects whether a passenger is in the seat and adjusts airbag deployment accordingly. This is a safety concern because the airbag system may not function properly in a crash. The repair will likely involve replacing the OCS sensor located under or within the passenger seat.

Suspension →1 issue
While driving your 2008 Nissan Altima on the highway at 80 MPH, the steering wheel suddenly became stiff and you lost control of the vehicle with no warning lights. You crashed into a concrete barrier, causing severe front-end damage and deploying the airbags. The vehicle was totaled. You suffered a concussion, whiplash, and facial injuries requiring ongoing neurological treatment. This suspension issue may be related to a known recall campaign and likely involves inspection and replacement of suspension components that affect steering control.

Tires →1 issue
You've experienced sidewall failures on two of your five 215/60R16 tires at very low mileage — the first failed under 4,000 miles and the second around 10,000 miles. This pattern is concerning since both tires developed structural problems in the sidewall despite minimal use. The issue may require replacement of the affected tires and investigation into whether there's a manufacturing defect or installation problem.
