NHTSA Campaign: 19V120000

Component: ENGINE

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2012-2016 Kia Soul vehicles equipped with 1.6L Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines. High exhaust gas temperatures may damage the catalytic converter, possibly resulting in abnormal engine combustion and damage to one or more of the engine's pistons and possible piston connecting rod failure.

Risk: Piston damage may result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. A broken connecting rod may puncture the engine block allowing engine oil to escape. The leaking oil may contact the exhaust, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the Catalytic Overheating Protection Engine Control Unit logic to prevent overheating of the catalytic converter. In addition, the catalytic converter will also be replaced if it has been damaged. Depending on the extent of any damage, the engine may also be replaced, free of charge. The recall began April 17, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC176.

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2010-2013 Kia Soul vehicles manufactured January 8, 2009, to October 2, 2013, equipped with a sun roof. A headliner plate may detach during deployment of the curtain air bag.

Risk: A detached headliner plate may increase the risk of injury to the occupant during a vehicle crash.

Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will install industrial adhesive strips to secure the headliner plates, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 2, 2015. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC112.

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2010-2019 Borrego, 2014-2016 Cadenza, 2010-2013 Forte, Forte Koup, Sportage, 2015-2018 K900, 2011-2015 Optima, 2011-2013 Optima Hybrid, Soul, 2012-2017 Rio, 2011-2014 Sorento, and 2010-2011 Rondo vehicles. The Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may experience an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.

Risk: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the HECU fuse, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed November 14, 2023. Owner notification letters were mailed March 29, 2024 through June 18, 2024. Your steering wheel coupler—the component that connects your steering wheel to the steering system—may wear out prematurely, causing your steering wheel to feel loose or unresponsive. This is a known defect that creates a serious safety risk. The fix typically involves replacing the worn steering coupler with a new one.

Your steering wheel is hesitating and not responding smoothly, a problem that started 3 days ago and is getting worse. You're concerned this could cause you to lose control of the vehicle. Your dealership will need to diagnose the issue, which may involve inspecting steering components like the power steering pump, hoses, or control linkage.

Your steering column makes clicking noises when you turn the wheel left and right. A Kia dealership quoted $1,200 to repair it and said it's not covered under recall. The repair likely involves replacing or servicing internal steering column components to eliminate the noise and ensure safe steering function.

Your steering wheel feels slightly loose and makes thumping noises when you turn right. This could indicate wear in the steering components that connect your wheel to the car's frame. A mechanic will likely need to inspect the steering linkage, tie rods, or ball joints to identify the source of the looseness and noise.

Your power steering system is making a knocking or clunking noise when you turn the steering wheel, especially when the car is stopped. You might also notice the steering feels tighter or looser than normal. This is caused by premature wear in the flexible coupling that connects the power steering motor. The fix will likely involve replacing the worn power steering coupling or the entire MDPS (motor-driven power steering) assembly.

Engine3 issues
criticalENGINE
Filed: Jan 2026

Your engine suddenly failed while driving 70 mph on the highway, causing a loud noise, burning smell, and complete loss of power that forced you to emergency stop across multiple traffic lanes. The dealership found that connecting rods failed and blew holes through the engine block — catastrophic internal damage. Although your vehicle was subject to a safety recall (19V120000) for engine damage matching this exact failure, Kia declined to repair or replace the engine and won't provide a written explanation of why the recall doesn't apply. A connecting rod replacement or full engine rebuild/replacement would typically be required to fix this type of failure.

Your car is displaying a P1326 diagnostic code and has gone into limp mode (reduced power). Mechanics found that cylinder 2 has lost compression and is misfiring, which means the engine isn't running properly. Both the dealer and Firestone say the engine needs to be replaced to fix this issue.

Your check engine light is on, and your engine shudders when accelerating and while idling. You're getting a misfire code for cylinder 3, and you've already replaced spark plugs three times and ignition coils twice since January 2025 without fixing the problem. Additionally, your engine is consuming oil quickly—you're adding oil every two weeks. This likely points to a deeper engine issue like a faulty fuel injector, compression problem, or internal engine wear that needs professional diagnosis.

FireFiled: Sep 2025

Your 2012 Kia Soul caught fire while parked in your driveway, with flames starting from under the hood and completely destroying the vehicle. The fire also caused heat damage to your home and a neighbor's home, and spread to your deck before being extinguished by the fire department. Your vehicle's VIN matched a safety recall (NHTSA Campaign 23V652) related to service brakes and hydraulic systems, but you had not received the recall notice. Resolving this issue would require a complete vehicle inspection by a professional mechanic or manufacturer to identify the exact fire cause, likely involving brake system components and electrical wiring.

Your 2012 Kia Soul was recalled for a hydraulic brake system issue (NHTSA Campaign 23V652000), but when you took it to the dealer, they refused to perform the repair. The dealer said they couldn't fix the brakes because your ignition was damaged from an attempted theft, and they didn't even inspect the vehicle to assess the actual brake problem. You'll likely need to have the ignition repaired first, then contact the dealer or manufacturer again to get the brake recall service completed.

Your 2012 Kia Soul is subject to a recall (23V652000) involving the hydraulic brake system due to a potential fire risk. Your dealer ordered replacement parts two months ago but they remain unavailable, leaving your vehicle unrepaired despite the safety concern. Contact Kia directly to escalate the parts shortage and get an estimated timeline for the repair.

Your steering wheel became very difficult to turn while you were reversing and parking, making it hard to control the vehicle's direction and causing the rear passenger wheel to hit a curb. The dealer initially blamed a faulty ignition key and replaced it, but then your car wouldn't start and the keys needed to be reprogrammed. Even after reprogramming, the steering problem happened again at the dealer, and the root cause still hasn't been identified.

Your car may suddenly stall while you're driving, causing you to lose power steering and all electrical functions including brake lights, headlights, and other electrical systems. This creates a dangerous driving situation where you can't control the vehicle or signal other drivers. The problem likely involves the electrical system losing power to the engine and other components, and may require diagnosis of the battery, alternator, or ignition system.

Your 2012 Kia Soul wouldn't start on December 22, 2025, even though the battery was fine—it would attempt to start but wouldn't turn over. After being towed to a service center and left for two weeks, it suddenly started and ran fine for a 20-mile test drive. You've also noticed the fuel range display is counting up instead of down, suggesting a possible computer or electrical issue rather than a fuel pump problem. The fix may involve diagnosing the engine control computer, electrical connections, or fuel system sensors to identify what's causing the starting issue and display malfunction.

Your check engine light is on with code P0420, which typically indicates a catalytic converter issue, and you're noticing a rubber smell from the engine. Your brakes are wearing down very quickly, and your engine feels sluggish overall. You've already had one recall done (knock sensor) and believe there may be a separate recall for the catalytic converter. Fixing this will likely involve diagnosing the catalytic converter with a scan tool and either cleaning or replacing it, along with inspecting your brake system for premature wear.

Your steering makes a clicking noise and pulls to one side or the other while you're driving straight, which is a safety concern. The dealership identified a faulty steering coupler as the cause, but your warranty has expired so they want you to pay for the repair. The steering problem is also causing your new tires to wear faster than normal. The fix will likely involve replacing the steering coupler and possibly realigning your wheels.

Your windshield trim panels on both the driver and passenger sides have detached and flown off while driving on the highway. This happened during normal driving conditions, with the driver's side panel coming loose first, followed by a similar issue on the passenger side. Kia declined to cover the repairs under warranty since your vehicle is beyond the 5-year/60,000-mile coverage period. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the windshield trim panels and inspecting the clips or adhesive that hold them in place.

After a mechanic worked on your drivetrain, your brake light and low tire pressure light came on. When the mechanic tried to replace a fuse related to these warning lights, the fuse sparked and blew out. Kia has a recall on this fuse, but the dealership is refusing to perform the recall work and repair, claiming the independent mechanic caused the damage and demanding several thousand dollars in charges. The dealership is also refusing to perform a separate ABS system recall, claiming prior work was done on it despite your having no record of this.
