2012 Kia Sorento Other Problems

Your check engine light came on, and a few days later while parked, your car began smoking under the hood. Within 10 minutes, neighbors reported hearing explosions and your vehicle caught fire. The fire destroyed the car, which had to be scrapped. Your car had a small oil leak for years that burned off on the engine, which may have contributed to the fire risk.

I had my mechanic come to my house to diagnose what has been going on and it is a recall on the motor. Along with my car throwing codes as well. I purchased the car from car max told them almost a year ago something was wrong with my car and they told me it was nothing it was a transmission issue. My father raised me to learn how to fix vehicles so o knew something was wrong. Now due to their negligence I am stranded with two small children.

2012 white pearl Kia sorento paint chipping and peeling off to reveal the bare metal below making it susceptible to rusting. It started on my hood and progressively got worse until I got the entire hood repainted. Now it is starting on the roof of my car and peeling off in big flakes. It continues to get worse.

I was driving down the freeway and suddenly heard a large pop from above my head, then looked in my rear view mirror and saw what turned out to be part of my sunroof falling on the road behind me. A bit of glass fell into the cabin, but most flew off immediately or was caught by the fabric cover. I pulled over and my front sunroof panel had shattered. I did not see any object coming at us from ahead prior to this happening and think it was spontaneous.

This morning the panoramic sunroof on our 2012 Kia Sorrento spontaneously exploded. Shattered and chunks of safety glass came down on us. My son and I sustained superficial injuries (I sustained laceration over left eye and on left hand) - he has a lump on the right side of his skull. When we pulled over the glass was also on the rear portion of the roof. Nothing struck the vehicle. There was no vehicle/truck in front of us for potential debris. Open sky above. It sounded like a gunshot before the glass exploded over us.

On September 18, 2023, Kia formally decided to recall various vehicles that represented a fire risk due to a faulty HECU (recall campaign 23V652000). Owners of the affected vehicles were advised not to park their cars in a garage or near other structures due to risk of fire. All well and good, but now over five months later, no repair has been proposed. This is an unreasonable amout of time to expect owners to leave their vehicles in unprotected areas, especially since the area I live in has been experiencing an elevated number of catalytic converter thefts. Kia's lack of a prompt remedy to replace an inexpensive fuse puts me at risk of paying several thousands if my catalytic converter is stolen. Kia needs to resolve this recall immediately.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL (notice received November 14, 2023) Today is 2/22/2024. Malfunction Indicator Lamp warning light did illuminate (02/16/2024). Registered mechanic diagnosed an intake manifold flap broken and intake manifold motor had to be replaced. ($2000). Not sure if this may be related to the HECU issue. BUT, as of this message, contact about the IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL from KIA about a remedy part has not been issued to me. Recall remedy for the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) has not been performed in a timely manner and the risk of fire or other issues continues to be a possibility. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Please advise.

UNKNOWN Issues and recall have came up on my vehicle telling me I’m not allowed to drive or even have other use vehicle. This is stopping me going to work and making me lose money every month paying for a car that doesn’t operate. I’ve took it to shop and they notice the recall can’t be fixed due to remedy not being made yet but I’ve waited close to over a year now and I don’t want to lose job and just bought this car from dealer not long ago

Kia installed the theft deterrent software to the 2012 Kia Sorrento. On 12/13/2023, a car thief stole the 2012 Kia Sorrento. The apartment community shared that the car was stolen in less than 3 minutes. The thief left the car one block away from the apartment community. The thief damaged driver side key-hole and the ignition lock cylinder. I contacted Kia Corporate to file a complaint that the software failed to stop the car theft. Kia Corporate shared that this is one of the first complaints. My insurance company shared that Kia Corporate is not telling the truth as the adjuster is addressing other stolen Kia automobiles which had the theft deterrent software installed. I like NHTSA to reopen the case against Kia.

The mechanic that worked with see uploads, stated that spark plugs were wet with oil because I needed a valve cover gasket replacement. His statement would have indicated that my vehicle was leaking oil because of a bad valve cover gasket and it would cost me over $400.00 to fix. My vehicle was not leaking oil, because I had already replaced the valve cover gasket. There were no oil leaks on the ground even in my driveway. The mechanic was not aware that I had already replaced the valve cover gasket on (5-18-2023), prior to the recall visit to Kia on Mt. Moriah, in Memphis,TN. I believe that Kia, the mechanic, intentionally fabricated a problem with my vehicle to keep from servicing my vehicle for free on any and all related recall problems. I am requesting that Kia replace my engine because the recall says it will replace or fix because it is a fire safety issue. Thanks. The paint on my snow white 2012 Sorento is peeling exposing metal

The steering wheel ignition lock is easy bypassed by using only a small screwdriver or USB cord. This makes the car easily stolen and therefore violates the requirements of 571.114 which requires a "starting system which, whenever the key is removed from the starting system prevents.. the normal activation of the vehicles engine or motor". This affects all Kia / Hyundai vehicles with a normal keyed ignition and without a vehicle immobilizer produced from approximately 2009-2022. Since the technology required to comply with the regulation (i.e. a vehicle immobilizer) is readily available and available on other cars from this maker, the vehicle manufacturer knowingly violated this regulation. I request a NHTSA inquiry into this clear safety defect. We are constantly living in fear of our cars being stolen any day now, this is sad!

Pearl white paint chipping off at unusual rate for no reason

Went to park put on the breaks and vehicle accelerated and could not stop went over the cement parking lot space and hit the post of the commercial building. Luckily no one hurt except the post. No individual. This accident was today 2-19-2022. Police report number. 22-0145. Cape May,NJ Police Department. This happen at least three other times. Once going thru a red light. Do not recall dates.

There was the smell of gasoline inside the cabin. Then the check engine light came on. Smoke began coming from the engine compartment. The fire completely engulfed the vehicle.

The car randomly started to burst j to flames. Our car is now totaled because of an engine compartment fire.

FRONT DRIVER SIDE DOOR HANDLE INOPERABLE FROM THE EXTERIOR HANDLE WITH NO PRIOR COMPLICATIONS OR DAMAGE ENSUED. KNOWN PROBLEM IN 2011 KIA SORENTO MODELS AND NOT RESOLVED IN NEWER MODELS. THIS CAN CAUSE MAJOR ISSUES IN SAFETY ESPECIALLY IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. THIS SHOULD BE RESOLVED IMMEDIATELY.

CAR NEVER HAS HAD ENGINE ISSUES AND GETS REGULAR, ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. I HAD MY OIL CHANGED THREE WEEKS AGO AS I DO EVERY FEW THOUSAND MILES. I WAS DRIVING THE OTHER DAY AND THE ENGINE STARTED TO SIEZE. THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING. THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE CAR. CAR WAS TOWED TO MECHANIC AND NO CRACKS/LEAKS WERE FOUND. THERE IS A SAFETY RECALL CURRENTLY FOR THE ENGINE BEARINGS BEING PREMATURELY WORN CAUSING ENGINE TO MALFUNCTION AND SIEZE. MY VIN WAS NOT LISTED UNDER THIS RECALL, HOWEVER, THE MECHANIC SUGGESTED IT IS AN INTERNAL/ENGINE PROBLEM, THUS QUITE LIKELY DUE TO THESE WORN BEARINGS IN THE ENGINE.

HAVE HAD THE TO REPLACE THE RIGHT CV AXLE TWICE IN THE PAST 40K MILES (ONCE AT ABOUT 118K AND AGAIN AT 150K) MECHANIC TOLD ME THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE IN KIAS

WHILE DRIVING ON A FOUR LANE HIGHWAY, THE CAR'S ENGINE JUST CUTS OFF ON ITS OWN WHILE I WAS IN TRAFFIC. ALL OF THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD COME ON. I PUT MY FLASHERS ON AND IT ALLOWED ME TO RESTART AND DRIVE AND IT DID IT AGAIN. THE THIRD TIME I STARTED IT, I TURNED OFF ON A LESS CROWED ROAD TO GET TO ANOTHER STRETCH OF ROAD AND DROVE VERY SLOWING FOR ABOUT 10 MILES TO GET IT HOME. I COULD SMELL SOMETHING COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND I DIDN'T PARK IT IN THE GARAGE. THE SMELL WAS STRONG AND THE HOOD VERY HOT TO THE TOUCH. I DIDN'T WANT TO CHANCE IT CATCHING ON FIRE. MY MOO ROOF SHATTERED FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 5 YEARS. ON THE AFTERNOON OF 2-27-20 I WAS DRIVING ON I-25 HEADED SOUTH, NEAR MEAD (BETWEEN LOVELAND AND DENVER) I WAS TRAVELING AROUND 80MPH IN THE MIDDLE (3) LANE WHEN MY SUNROOF SHATTERED FOR WHAT SEEMED TO BE NO REASON AT ALL. GLASS RAINED DOWN EVERYWHERE AND I FEEL VERY LUCKY THAT IT WASN'T THE CAUSE OF A MAJOR ACCIDENT. THIS IS A BUSY SECTION OF I-25 AND THERE WERE A NUMBER OF CARS NEARBY, ALL GOING 70+MPH. I HEARD NO IMPACT TO THE SUNROOF WHATSOEVER. IT JUST SORT OF EXPLODED. IT SEEMS TO ME AS THOUGH THE LEADING METAL EDGE WAS FLEXING AND AIR GOT UNDER IT IN SUCH A WAY, THAT IT JUST PEELED BACK. I HAVE THE METAL PIECE SHOWN IN THE PIC ATTACHED. THE END OF THAT PIECE OF METAL LANDED ON MY RIGHT FOREARM; GLAD I HAD BOTH HANDS ON THE WHEEL.

MY CAR HAS BEEN HAVING STRANGE INTERMITTENT ENGINE TROUBLES & SYMPTOMS. AND THEN CONTINUE AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED FOR ANOTHER MONTH. RECENTLY THE SYMPTOMS ARE HAPPENING MORE OFTEN. IT IS TERRIFYING. I CAN'T DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY BECAUSE I AM SO SCARED. STUNNED AND SHOCKED, I CAREFULLY MADE MY WAY ACROSS THREE LANES OF BUSY MORNING TRAFFIC TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND INSPECT THE DAMAGE. THE ENTIRE SUNROOF HAD SHATTERED, LEAVING JAGGED GLASS PARTICLES OVER THE TOP AND INSIDE THE SUNROOF MECHANISM, AS WELL AS INSIDE MY CAR. I'M GRATEFUL MY TWO CHILDREN WEREN'T SITTING IN BACK OR THEY MAY HAVE BEEN CUT BY THE SPRAYING GLASS! WE HAD BEEN TRAVELING AT AVERAGE HIGHWAY SPEEDS, DURING A COOL, CLOUDY DAY. IT WAS ABOUT 55 DEGREES AND THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITY OR DEBRIS ON THE ROAD THAT MORNING. I NEVER NOTED PRIOR DAMAGE TO THE ROOF AND WAS TRAVELING WITH THE SUNROOF COMPLETELY SHUT THAT MORNING. THIS WAS AN ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE THAT VERY WELL COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. I'M FURIOUS TO FIND SO MANY REPORTS OF THESE INCIDENTS OCCURRING! RECALLS MUST BE MADE AND A BETTER SOLUTION NEEDS TO BE IN PLACE!

ON THREE OCCASIONS IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, MY 2012 KIA SORENTO, WHILE CRUISING AT THE SPEED LIMIT OF APPX 55 MPH ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY, TOTALLY LOST POWER. DASHBOARD LIGHTS WERE BLINKING, BUT NOTHING ELSE WAS OPERABLE. ON THE FIRST TWO INCIDENTS, I MANAGED TO STEER CAR ONTO SHOULDER. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TRIED TO START IT AGAIN. AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS, CAR RESTARTED. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE NORMALLY AFTER THAT. LATER ON THE EVENING OF THE FIRST INCIDENT, SOMETIME IN 2016, I REPLACED THE BATTERY IN THE FOB AND THOUGHT THAT SOLVED THE PROBLEM. AFTER SECOND INCIDENT (3/5/17), I TOOK CAR TO HERSON'S KIA IN ROCKVILLE, MD. THEY DID A DIAGNOSIS, WHICH REPORTED NO PROBLEMS. AFTER THE THIRD INCIDENT (12/12/18), I TOOK IT BACK TO HERSON'S KIA. THEY CHECKED AND SAW THAT A RECALL PROCEDURE (SC 106) THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM HAD BEEN PERFORMED ON AN EARLIER VISIT. THEY AGAIN PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC, WHICH AGAIN REPORTED NO PROBLEMS. THEY BASICALLY SAID THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT IF THEY COULDN'T DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THIS THIRD INCIDENT WAS PRETTY FRIGHTENING BECAUSE THE CAR LOST POWER IN THE CENTER LANE OF A FIVE-LANE HIGHWAY, SO I COULDN'T PULL OVER. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A SITUATION THAT COULD BE LIFE-THREATENING. ALTHOUGH MY WEB RESEARCH FINDS THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MANY OTHER 2010--2013 KIA SORENTOS,, KIA DOESN'T SEEM TO BE ABLE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS OR KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT.

SUNROOF RANDOMLY EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING. JUST THE FRONT PORTION THAT OPENS UP HAS COMPLETELY SHATTERED.

MY SORENTO MADE A CLANGING NOISE THEN THE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE. THE CAR WAS TOTALLED. I WAS ON A BUSY CITY ROAD IN CINCINNATI WHEN IT CAUGHT FIRE. IT WAS IN MOTION, I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT BEFORE IT DIED.

SUN ROOF SHATTERED

THE PUSH BUTTON TO OPEN THE GAS TANK DOOR CONTINUOUSLY HAS PROBLEMS ACTIVATING TO OPEN THE DOOR. YOU HAVE TO PUSH THE BUTTON SEVERAL TIMES RIGOURSLY TO ENGAGE THE UNLOCK MECHANISM. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. I'VE BEEN ADVISED BY OTHER SORENTO OWNERS THEY TOO ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE.

TAKATA RECALL MY TRANSMISSION IS MAKING A NOISE WHEN I BRINGING IT TO A STOP AND MY TIRES START GOING TO THE LEFT ALSO IT HAS NO TRANSMISSION OR MOTOR LIGHT FLASHING BUT I CAN FEEL THATS THERES SOMETHING WRONG ALSO WHEN I PARK IT MOVES A LITTLE I HAVE TO MAKE SURE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IS ON SO THAT IT WONT BOUNCE INTO GEAR AND MOVE AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.

ON 06 APRIL 2018 AT 1743, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 2012 KIA SORENTO AND THE SUNROOF EXPLODED. AFTER FURTHER INVESTIGATION, THE VEHICLE'S GLASS WAS SPREAD ACROSS THE TOP OF THE VEHICLE. NO FOREIGN OBJECT, ROCK OR MAJOR TEMPERATURE CHANGE CREATED THE ACCIDENT AND THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT FIFTEEN (15) MILES PER HOUR.

THE PANERAMIC SUNROOF SHATTERED WHILE DRIVING AT 60 MPH ON HIGHWAY IN VERY LIGHT TRAFFIC. NOTHING SEEMED TO STRIKE THE SUNROOF.

WHILE DRIVING DOWN AN EXPRESSWAY AT APPROX. 45MPH, MY SUNROOF EXPLODED. GLASS WAS FORCED DOWN AND THE COVER SCREEN SAVED ME FROM THE DEBRIS COMING INTO THE CAR. THERE WAS NO OTHER TRAFFIC AROUND ME AND NO FOREIGN MATTER FOUND IN THE DEBRIS. THIS EVENT WAS EXTREMELY FRIGHTENING , AND I HAD MY MOTHER AND MY DAUGHTER IN THE VEHICLE WHEN IT HAPPENED. I MADE A POLICE REPORT OF THE EVENT AND I HAVE PICTURES OF THE DAMAGE.

THIS IS STILL HAPPENING. 3. ABOUT A MONTH AGOWHILE SITTING IDLE IN TRAFFIC THE CAR STALLED, TURNED THE IGNITION OFF THEN BACK ON AND IT STARTED BACK UP 4. YESTERDAY I PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE IT DOES NOT ENGAGE RIGHT AWAY AND WHEN IT DOES IT JERKS. NOW THE ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. I HAVE HAD MY CAR TO THE DEALER REGARDING THE ISSUES AND EVERY TIME THEY SAY THEY CAN'T DIAGNOSE IT BECAUSE THE ENGINE LIGHT WENT OUT AND THAT THEY TEST DROVE IT AND NOTHING WAS WRONG. THIS VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS TO MYSELF AND OTHERS TO DRIVE AND I'M ABOUT TO CONTACT THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU IF THIS DOES NOT GET RESOLVED. THERE IS A RECALL OUT ON THE YEAR MAKE AND MODEL OF MY VEHICLE BUT NOT ON MY "SPECIFIC" MOTOR. WELL IN TELLING YOU THERE'S A PROBLEM AND I'VE READ ABOUT OTHER KIA'S HAVING THE SAME ISSUE.

VEHICLE STALLS DURING OPERATION TRAVELING AROUND 15 MPH; HAPPENS FREQUENTLY ON FREEWAY AND HIGHWAY; HAPPENS AT RANDOM; VEHICLE STARTS IMMEDIATELY ON NEUTRAL; UNSAFE POTENTIAL COLLISION ON MAJOR FREEWAY AND HIGHWAY; CHILDREN IS TRANSPORTED IN THIS VEHICLE.

REAR TRUCK DOOR LIFT GATE SUPPORT, TAIL GATE SUPPORT. I WAS CLEANING OUT OUT OUR VEHICLE WHILE STATIONARY IN OUR DRIVEWAY WITH THE BACK DOOR OPEN, AND NEXT THING I KNEW HE DOOR HAD SLAMMED DOWN ON ME. ONE OF THE LIFT GATE SUPPORTS GATEWAY AND BLEW AND COLLAPSED ON TOP OF ME. I SUFFERED FROM A MAJOR HEADACHE AND SOME MINOR BACK PAIN. I'M GRATEFUL THIS WAS NOT MY CHILD WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN HURT WORSE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE.. I CONTACTED DEALERSHIP AND NO RECALL LISTED NOR COVERED WE HAD TO REPLACE AND REPAIR OURSELVES. WE PURCHURSED NEW ONES AND REPLACED TODAY WHEN WE RECEIVED THEM!

TRUCK STARTED MAKING A KNOCKING NOISE. TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND TO MY SURPRISED, WAS TOLD THAT I NEED AN ENGINE. IT WAS SHOCKING BECAUSE THERE WERE NO SIGNS PRIOR TO THE KNOCKING TO INDICATE A PROBLEM. NO LIGHTS ON THE PANEL LIT UP, NO OIL LEAKS OR ANYTHING OF THAT NATURE. THE MOST APPALLING THING IS THAT THEY QUOTED SEVERAL PRICES FOR REPLACING THE ENGINE? IT WAS NOTHING THAT I DID WRONG TO CAUSE THIS PROBLEM. IN RESEARCHING, I FOUND THAT SHAVINGS FROM THE ENGINE COULD CAUSE THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A MANFACTURE DEFECT. MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING IT WHEN IT FINALLY STALLED. HE SUFFERED A HEART ATTACK ONE YEAR AGO AND IS NOT ABLE TO PNYSICALL PUSH THE TRUCK OUT OF THE WAY OF TRAFFIC. FINALLY, HE WAS ABLE TO COAST IT OFF THE HIGHWAY. ALTHOUGH IT HAS ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND MILES, IT WAS SERVICED REGULARLY AND SHOWED NO SIGNS OF A PROBLEM. IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM, IT WAS NOT CAUGHT OR IT WAS IGNORED DURING SERVICE APPOINTMENTS. WHAT OPTIONS DO I HAVE? I DO HAVE A LAWYER WAITING TO HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM. I WAS NOT GIVEN INFORMATION THAT SUPPORTED THE NEED OF A NEW ENGINE AT THE COST OF $8,000.00 WHICH IS MORE THAN THE VALUE OF THE TRUCK.

THE DOOR WILL OPEN FROM THE INSIDE BUT NOT FROM THE OUTSIDE. AFTER SPEAKING TO OTHERS I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THIS HAS BECOME A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE SORENTO.

WHEN DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS, ROUGH IDLING BETWEEN GEARS THE CAR STALLED AS I WAS DRIVING UNDER 30 MPH AND DASHBOARD LIGHTS ALL CAME ON, STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP, COULDN'T TURN ONTO SIDE STREET UNBEKNOWNST TO ME SO I WAS DRIVING INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. WHEN IDLING AT A RED LIGHT, THE CAR STALLS AND ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTS TURN ON. VEHICLE WON'T MOVE AFTER STALLING. HAVE TO PUT IT IN PARK, SHUT VEHICLE OFF AND RESTART VEHICLE. BEEN TO DEALERSHIP TWICE FOR THIS, RAN DIAGNOSTICS, CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG
