Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Kia Sorento vehicles manufactured October 19, 2009, to January 31, 2013. In the affected vehicles, if excessive force is applied to the gear shift lever, the brake-shift interlock mechanism may chip or crack allowing the transmission being able to be shifted out of "Park" without the brakes being depressed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection."
Risk: Without requiring the brake to be pressed, the vehicle may be unintentionally shifted out of Park, allowing it to roll, which may result in a crash.
Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake-shift interlock mechanism, free of charge. The recall began on November 9, 2015. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC124.

Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

Engine →7 issues
While driving at 60 mph, your vehicle suddenly stalled without any warning light appearing. You heard a rattling sound from the engine and saw smoke coming from under the hood, and the engine wouldn't restart. The dealer found that your engine block had failed and the entire engine needed to be replaced. This repair involves removing and replacing the complete engine assembly.

Your engine suddenly seized while you were driving at 40-45 mph with no warning lights. This happened at 230,000 miles, and your dealer refused to service the vehicle because you didn't have oil change records on file. The manufacturer didn't provide assistance despite you owning the car for a year. Getting your engine diagnosed and repaired will likely require a full engine inspection or potentially a complete engine replacement or rebuild.

Your check engine light came on while driving, followed by an unusual sound and burning smell. Smoke then poured from the engine and your car began stalling as if it was overheating. A mechanic diagnosed the problem as a blown head gasket, which allows coolant and oil to leak into the combustion chamber. Fixing this typically requires removing the cylinder head and replacing the gasket.

Your car started smoking and caught fire underneath while you were driving with passengers. Another driver alerted you to the fire, and when you opened the hood, flames were visible near the engine. Your insurance company declared the vehicle a total loss. This may involve inspection of the engine bay, fuel system components, and electrical wiring to determine the fire's origin.

Your 2011 Kia Sorento is experiencing engine jerking and poor acceleration when you press the gas pedal, along with a loud knocking sound from the engine and occasional stalling—especially when driving uphill. The check engine light is on, and you've had to disconnect and reconnect the battery to restart the vehicle after it stalls. A dealer diagnosed that knock sensors and O2 sensors need replacement due to the knocking noise, but the repair was denied because your vehicle's mileage exceeds the coverage limit for the recall. The problem has gotten worse over time. Fixing this will likely require replacing the knock sensors and oxygen sensors, and possibly addressing other engine issues causing the stalling.

Electrical System →1 issue
Your 2011 Kia Sorento caught fire while parked in your garage. Kia has determined the fire started in the electrical system behind the steering wheel but is refusing to take responsibility, citing the vehicle's age and previous ownership history. This fire could have caused serious injury or property damage, and will likely require investigation into the vehicle's electrical wiring and connections to determine the root cause.

Electrical System,unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
While driving and stopped at a red light, you noticed smoke coming from under the hood. As you turned onto your street, the smoke increased, so you pulled over and turned off the engine. When you opened the hood, a fire started at the back of the engine. This is a serious fire hazard that requires immediate professional inspection to identify the cause and prevent future fires.

Air Bags →1 issue
Your car's airbag warning light may stay on due to a faulty clock spring, which is the electrical connector that rotates with your steering wheel to keep the airbag system working. If you ignore this warning and continue driving, your driver's side airbag may fail to deploy in a front-end crash. Kia extended the warranty on this part to 15 years from the original purchase date, but your vehicle is now outside that coverage window. Fixing this typically involves replacing the clock spring assembly in the steering column.

Unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your car unexpectedly tried to move forward even when you had your foot on the brake, and wouldn't shift into park. The engine shut down completely at a busy intersection, leaving you unable to use your hazard lights—a dangerous situation. You had to hold the emergency brake until the car could be towed. This likely involves issues with the transmission, brake system, or engine control that need professional diagnosis.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting,engine →1 issue
Your engine overheated, began smoking, and emitted a burning plastic smell while you were driving. The dealership identified this as a recall issue rather than a warranty problem, even though your engine wasn't damaged by misuse. The repair will likely involve inspection and replacement of engine components related to the overheating and electrical issue that caused the burning smell.
