While driving at 60 mph, smoke started coming from your vents. When you pulled over, you saw sparks coming from the engine, and the vehicle caught fire. The car was totaled and had to be towed away. This appears to be a serious electrical or engine fire that requires investigation of the engine bay wiring and components.

Your engine stalled suddenly while driving at highway speed without any warning. A mechanic found that your catalytic converter and crankshaft bolt had failed and needed replacement. Even after repair, the problem happened several more times. This is a serious issue since your engine can shut off unexpectedly while you're driving.

Your engine's crankshaft has broken multiple times (4 times total), and the air compressor has also failed twice. This indicates a serious recurring mechanical failure that keeps requiring replacement of these critical engine components.

NHTSA #: 11002360

Filed: Jul 2016

While driving on the highway at 65+ mph, your power steering stopped working because the crankshaft bolt and pulley failed, which also caused all the engine accessories (like the alternator and air conditioning compressor) to stop functioning. This is a serious issue because losing power steering at highway speeds makes the vehicle very difficult to control. The fix will require replacing the crankshaft bolt and pulley.

Your 2003 Kia Sorento stalled and lost power while driving at 60 mph, then restarted on its own. This is a safety concern since the engine shut down unexpectedly while in motion. You've had the fuel pump, camshaft sensor, and timing belt replaced, plus a tune-up performed, but the stalling problem keeps happening. The underlying cause hasn't been identified, and the dealership hasn't been able to repair it.

NHTSA #: 11265349

Filed: May 2019

Your engine stalled while driving at 45 mph, and both the check engine light and a snow warning light came on at the same time. The vehicle hasn't been diagnosed or repaired yet. A mechanic will need to scan your engine codes to identify what caused the stall.

Your engine's RPMs won't go above 4,000, and you're seeing smoke coming from under the hood. Your car's speed is limited to 40 mph and the engine is losing oil rapidly. Even after an oil change at the dealer, the problem came back. The issue may involve the engine's internal seals, gaskets, or rings that are allowing oil to leak or burn.

When you try to fill up your gas tank, gasoline suddenly sprays out and spills on you. Even when you pump slowly, you can only get a few gallons in before this happens. The next day, your fuel gauge reads empty even though you just filled it, and your car has actually run out of gas several times. This suggests gasoline is leaking or draining from your tank very quickly after you fill it. The repair will likely involve inspecting and possibly replacing the fuel filler neck, fuel tank vents, or fuel tank itself to stop the leak.

NHTSA #: 11149624
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: May 2018

When you try to fill your car's gas tank, fuel sprays back out at you instead of flowing into the tank. This can get fuel all over you, your vehicle, and the ground, and it may even splash into your eyes. You've found that this is a known issue for this year and model, and you believe it poses a fire and safety hazard. The fix likely involves replacing or inspecting the fuel filler neck or internal fuel tank components that prevent backflow during refueling.

NHTSA #: 11094097
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2017

When you fill up your gas tank, fuel sprays back out at you repeatedly, even when you're fueling slowly. This is dangerous because gasoline gets on your skin, clothes, and the ground, creating a potential fire hazard. The dealership has refused to help despite a recall being issued for the fuel filter. The fix likely involves replacing the fuel filter or checking the fuel filler neck assembly to prevent backflow.

When you refuel your car, gasoline spurts back out of the filler neck and splashes on your hands and vehicle. You've found you can only prevent this by pumping very slowly. This issue may require inspection and repair of the fuel filler neck or vent system to allow proper fuel flow during refueling.

criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Mar 2025

Your air bag clock spring mechanism has failed, and Kia has stopped producing replacement parts for 2003 Sorento models with cruise control. This component is critical to your air bag safety system, and you're unable to get it fixed through normal parts channels. Your air bag warning light is on, indicating the system isn't functioning properly.

Filed: Jan 2018

Your airbag warning light is on and you've been told one of your airbags won't inflate properly, even though your car hasn't been in an accident. This is preventing your vehicle from passing inspection. Your car is subject to a Takata airbag recall, and you should contact your Kia dealer to have the defective airbag module inspected and replaced under the recall.

NHTSA #: 11065655
Steering1 issue
criticalSTEERING
Filed: Nov 2017

Your crankshaft pulley bolt keeps loosening, which is causing your steering wheel to become stiff and difficult to turn. This happened while you were driving in traffic, making the car unsafe to operate. The car has been undriveable for over two weeks and required a tow to get it to safety.

NHTSA #: 11048181
Suspension1 issue
criticalSUSPENSION
Filed: Mar 2017

Your rear axle bracket and trailing arm mount have developed rust and corrosion, and the bracket broke while driving at highway speeds. This is a serious structural issue that affects your vehicle's stability and handling. The repair will likely involve replacing the corroded rear axle bracket and trailing arm mount components.

Filed: Mar 2017

Your 2003 Kia Sorento may experience severe frame rusting that can cause suspension components to detach from the frame, creating a serious safety hazard. Some owners have also needed gas tank replacement due to rust-related damage. Kia has refused to address these issues under warranty. Fixing this will likely require frame repair or replacement, suspension reattachment, and possibly a new fuel tank.

Power Train1 issue
criticalPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Mar 2017

Your vehicle suddenly stalled and stopped working while driving in traffic, causing you to lose power steering control. A mechanic determined that the crankshaft sensor and related crankshaft components had failed and needed replacement. The repair, including towing, cost over $700.

Filed: Nov 2017

Your 2003 Kia Sorento stalls out after driving for about 15 minutes. After waiting 5 minutes, it will start again and run for a short distance before stalling once more, and this pattern repeats. The issue appears to involve the fuel system, electrical system, or powertrain, and you'll likely need a mechanic to diagnose whether it's a fuel pump, ignition coil, or electrical connection problem.

Filed: Jan 2017

Your 2003 Kia Sorento stalled and lost power while driving without warning, though it restarted afterward. Additionally, when you tried to refuel, gas sprayed out of the fuel tank opening. The vehicle has not been diagnosed or repaired for either issue. These problems may involve a fuel system blockage or vent issue and an engine fuel delivery problem that should be inspected by a mechanic.

NHTSA #: 10947627
Suspension,structure1 issue
highSUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
Filed: Jan 2017

Your Sorento's rear suspension components are prone to rust and corrosion, and the rear sub-frame structure can deteriorate over time. This is a known issue covered under a Takata recall for your model year. You should have this inspected and repaired according to the recall service bulletin, as a compromised rear suspension can affect vehicle handling and safety.
